And congrats to Mercury for being Tumblr's least favorite planet!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one was expected, I love Mercury but it just looks (and is tbh) a little boring. Still a cool planet, love the craters!!

I'm not including Earth's moon because I think we can agree that would result in a Moonsweep. But the Solar System is home to 685 other known moons that are also weird and wonderful!
Pictures and fun facts of all these moons below the read more!
Tumblr media
Phobos. The larger of Mars's two moons, it is getting closer to Mars at a rate of 1.8 m/year. It will either crash into the planet or break apart, forming a ring!
Tumblr media
Deimos. Tiny little moon with loose sediment possibly 100 m thick on its surface.
Tumblr media
Europa. One of Jupiter's four Galilean moons, so-called because they were discovered by Galileo. This moon has an ocean underneath the icy surface and may be one of the best places to search for extraterrestrial life!
Tumblr media
Callisto. One of Jupiter's four Galilean moons. Used to be considered one of the most boring moons, but more recent evidence suggests that it has an ocean beneath its icy/rocky surface!
Tumblr media
Io. One of Jupiter's four Galilean moons. The most volcanically-active body in the Solar System!
Tumblr media
Ganymede. One of Jupiter's four Galilean moons. The largest moon in the Solar System and the only known one with its own magnetic field! Also thought to have a subsurface ocean.
Tumblr media
Titan. The only moon with a substantial atmosphere, and the only known body besides Earth with present-day liquid on the surface! Titan has lakes, rivers, and seas made of liquid methane and ethane.
Tumblr media
Enceladus. A tiny moon, but a very scientifically interesting one! It has a liquid water ocean beneath its icy shell, and it appears to have vents where plumes of water shoot out into space. Also thought to be one of the best places to search for life.
Tumblr media
Triton. Neptune's largest moon. One of the few geologically-active moons in the Solar System with a surface made of nitrogen ice!
All photos from NASA.

doctor who pokemon headcanons!
starting this little side project of a pokemon au / headcanons for doctor who! i have some characters done (some i'm not sure abt) but and just wanna share what has been fizzing abt my brain for a while.. so to first establish how this au will work:
the pokemon are not intended to be straight correlations to the characters personalities and instead more focused on what they might use. obviously a character who is loyal will value a loyal pokemon but im not necessarily giving an evil character an "evil" pokemon with zero nuance in relation to the decision.
a lot of this is based on my interpretation of the character so be aware that you may disagree with them. im happy to take suggestions on things though!
my main is @lyricalnonsens3 but im posting this here.

I feel like I just made a crazy discovery. So we were talking about the planets in bio class today and I randomly said " did you know all of jupiter's moons were named after zeus's lovers?"
And my teacher was like, "well, I guess zeus is jupiter so yeah."
And then I was MIND BLOWN
So i looked into the moons of the other planets and they're all related! NEPTUNE(AS IN THE BLUE PLANET AS IN WATER AS IN POSEIDON HAS MOONS RELATED TO HIM AND THEN SATURN AS IN KRONOS AS IN A LOT OF HIS MOONS ARE TITANS?!?!)
im so dumbfounded that I can't belive I didn't put the pieces together before...
DID ANYONE ELSE KNOW THIS OR AM I JUST SLOW?!?!
(Side note whoever named the planets and their moons were cooking to the power of 10)

Great ball of fire. Even greater ball of yarn.
Made the sun a messy ball of hot thread. Might make it lore that cats worship the almighty sun yarn as a religion... like a Dark Souls player

The Moon is Slowly Moving Away from Earth: Due to tidal forces, the Moon is gradually drifting away from Earth at a rate of about 3.8 centimeters per year.

OK SO, I JUST DISCOVERED THIS WHILE WATCHING A DOCUMENTARY AND I FEEL THE NEED TO TELL EVERYONE ABOUT IT!
SO, SORRY NOT SORRY!
It's about the sun so if you want to read it it's under the cut…
OK, HI
LET'S START!
So the core of the sun has atoms that travel at really high speeds and when they collide and fuse together, they realese photons.
Photons travel at light speed and stream outwards. But because the sun has a really dense core they're restrained, absorbed, scattered.
So, a little travel to get out of the sun, and only get out of the sun, that would usually take only 2 seconds, literally, can actually take a FUCKING MILLION YEARS!
Now, if you still don't understand what I'm talking about and/or implying, let me explain.
So, it takes 8 minutes for sunlight to reach Earth, right? Well, congratulations, WE'RE RECEIVING SUNLIGHT THAT MAY BE A MILLION YEARS OLD BECAUSE IT DIDN'T MANAGE TO PASS THROUGH THE SUN'S CORE ANY FASTER!!! AAAAHAHHHHHHHHHJHHHHHHHUIGHRUIHGUIAGYH
we're getting sunbathed by ancient light almost every single day, and acting like it's nothing….
i'm in absolute shock, i have never felt so honored to feel sunlight on my skin, holy fucking shit aaahhahahahhhhahhhhh
anyway, thanks for reading my ramblings, I hope this has improved your day, because it certainly improved mine!
byeeeeee
i feel that a God has blessed me and I'm not even religious ;w;

The celestial object of the day is Mimas!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This saturnian moon has a crater named the Herschel Crater, the second biggest of any planetary moon, measuring 139 km (86 mi) in diameter. Mimas has so many craters that new ones can only form inside existing ones
