There’s always been a dent in my stomach.
7/25/23
Midway between my breasts and pelvis, just above my navel, is a line that splits my torso into two. It’s an indented line, as if someone is pressing an invisible string against me to help me from losing balance. Over the years I’ve gained and lost weight, grown muscle, stayed skinny and yet the crease has remained staring back at me every time I turn to the full length mirror. I fold backwards clumsily to stretch and smooth it out. I pull my skin down. Lift it up. But when I let go, my torso recoils to its original form. Then turning to the side, I stick my stomach out as comically possible. Protruding the fat, organs, muscle, flesh. This time instead of rolling my eyes at the reflection and retreating, I try something different. I pull in a full breath.
I feel creaks, clicks, the sound of several gears in a lock as if twisting and turning to urge a release.
Hold.
It becomes unstable and wobbly, overwhelmed by what I could not comprehend was relief, my body doubles over coughing. Streams of dust erupt from my esophagus and the Texas sun is shining stuffily into my mother’s pride and joy: the beige 2000 Lexus. I don’t want to go to school this morning. The dust is lodged in the hinges of my jaws, and my teeth are zippered shut. Holding my breath tight so that the duplicating wads of debris don’t shift around anymore than it already is. It doesn’t stop. The rays of light expose the millions of white particles in just the few inches in front of my face. I’m blinded and my lashes are heavy. The particles find their way into my face, nuzzling its nauseating grayness deep within my tendons and mixing in with my saliva, filling up my mouth more and more with a wet taste of stale lint until my cheeks are swollen.
What’s wrong, beta?
Mama is concerned. We’re pulled up in front of X Elementary. She’s several months pregnant but I didn’t know. My sister turns around.
She’s sick! She’s gonna throw up!
Sh. Beta, say “ah!”
I shake my head, tears stream down. If I open up even a crack I wont know what to do with all of this dust inside of me.
We pull to the side where I can spit out the gunk. I heave the breaths I hadn’t allowed myself to take. Shaking. I pull my belly to my spine until my body finally goes still.

Ever taken out the lint filter slot in a dryer and looked inside? Did that last night since ours had a buildup of gunk in the holder. The area beneath was FULL of dryer lint! Like it had overflowed and fallen to the inner workings often and for years. I had unplugged the machine, obviously, so was able to just scoop the stuff out. Handfuls of dryer lint. It was nuts. Had to vacuum inside to get the lint dust left behind and that scattered inside the dryer. Not sure if it had an impact on the efficiency of the machine, but that just screamed “fire hazard” to me.
So all in all, a productive night.

Summertime in Las Vegas! 12 Essential Home Maintenance Tips
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/45ae61df82207344cb02602c5fb18ae2/57de4daa9d549b9a-bd/s540x810/bc8d02dda81b5ce8716748a845a93aa253aeaa3a.jpg)
Summertime in Las Vegas isn’t exactly when we feel most compelled to perform home maintenance tasks. After all, it's 100 + degrees, even in the shade! Getting the easier ones out of the way now, however, will lighten the task list you’ll face in the fall. To make it even easier on you, we’ve put together a list of 12 projects that will take you only 10 minutes or less to perform.
Summertime in Las Vegas...Let it slide
#1. Squirt some lubricant on anything that slides, such as sliding glass doors, windows, and doors once a year. But, first, clean out the “gunk” that’s accumulated in and around the tracks. If you have vinyl windows, use caution warns the Family Handyman. Oil lubricants can damage the vinyl, so he recommends using a dry PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) spray lubricant (such as WD-40® SPECIALIST®) “. . . on the contact points and wiping it off with a rag.” What if you are out of commercial lubricant and it's too hot to go to HomeDepot? Use a small dab of petroleum jelly on door hinges. Again, this will attract and hold dust and dirt, so don’t use the oily substance on the window tracks.
Channel your inner Sherlock Holmes
Some of the annual inspections that the experts recommend can be knocked out in less than 10 minutes. Do one every weekend and you’ll have this part of your home maintenance chore list whittled down to where you’ll have more time for fun on the weekends. #2. Dust and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, according to the user’s manual instructions. Change the batteries, if needed. #3. Check the water heater for rust. Open the burner chamber and look for rust flakes. Also, take a look at the flame – it should be blue. If it contains yellow coloring, the jets may need cleaning. #4. Test the ground fault interrupter outlets by pushing the “test” button. The “reset” button should pop out. Push it and you’re finished. #5. Check the garage door opener for safety issues. Bob Vila recommends pulling the handle to put the system into manual mode and lifting the door three feet from the ground. It should remain open. If it doesn’t, call a garage door professional. Put the system back into automatic mode and open the door completely. Place an obstacle under it, such as a garbage can, and press the button to close the door. If it doesn’t stop when it meets the obstacle, call a garage door professional as soon as possible. #6. While you’re lubricating the windows and doors, inspect the weather stripping for signs of wear. Summertime in Las Vegas means 110+ degree days! Weatherstripping gets worn out quickly. #7. Scale can build up on the water valves under your sinks and behind the toilets and you can prevent this by turning each one off and then back on at least twice each year. #8. Open the breaker box and check to ensure there are no scorch marks around the fuses or breakers.
Only you can prevent home fires
Most Summertime home fires in Las Vegas are preventable, so including safety maintenance chores on your list may save lives. All of these tasks take just a few minutes. #9. Check the clothes dryer ducts for lint buildup. Unplug it and move it away from the wall. Disconnect the ductwork and examine the opening in the wall for lint. Use a vacuum to clean out any buildup you find. For step-by-step instructions on how to thoroughly clean your dryer vents, visit BobVila.com. #10. Inspect the fire extinguishers. The experts at Allstate Insurance recommend that you inspect them at least once a month. First, check to ensure the safety and tamper seals are intact. Check the pressure gauge to ensure it has the proper pressure. Some extinguishers have a test button. Press it and watch the gauge to ensure the pressure is adequate. Finally, check the tank for signs of corrosion or leaking. #11. Check each electrical outlet in the home by touching them. If they feel hot to the touch, call an electrician. #12. Frayed wires are fire hazards so take a few minutes to check the cords on appliances, electronics, lamps, and other electric products. Don’t run extension cords under rugs, by the way. Let's face it, summertime in Las Vegas is no joke and hardly anyone wants to be working outside of their home. In the coolness of early morning or right before sunset, take 10 minutes to perform each of these tasks, and over the course of a few weeks, you will have considerably shortened your home maintenance to-do list. Window Cleaning Hacks for the Cleanest Windows EVER
Do you wish to always have clean and sparkling windows in your house? I think I know your answer. It is YES right?. Because along with giving a fresh look to the house and enhancing the interiors, it gives us a better and clear view of the outside space around us.
Window cleaning is a satisfying experience for the eyes. It gives a pleasing moment when you see the dirt flowing down while cleaning.
Dirty windows give a sense of darkness and dullness. Even the sun’s rays find it difficult to reach the interiors of the house through the dirty windows. And if this is the case with the windows at your place, it is the time to clean it.
I know that cleaning the windows is a task which you always want to avoid as long as possible because you think it is difficult. So you even end up spending money hiring professional cleaners for the purpose.
But what if I tell you that I will help you to make the process easier and that too with better cleaning results. Yes, these cleaning tips and hacks will make your window cleaning process easier and less hating along with giving you shining windows.
1. The right time to clean
When the warmth of the sun is directly hitting the windows, the cleaning solution will dry up very fast on the windows and will leave a residue behind in the form of spots and streaks.
The proper time to clean is when the sun’s rays are not directly hitting the windows or on a cool day or even during the early morning or night hours.
2. The best tools for cleaning
Not only the time to clean the windows should be proper, but also the tools for cleaning should be adequate. Before you start cleaning, you should know which cloth or tool you should use for a perfect clean. If you use any old cloth or towel to clean your windows, they will still be left with debris and lint.
Use a microfiber cloth for a lint-free clean. Newspapers will also be a good choice for a proper window clean. And a spray bottle is must have to store the cleaning solution or water if windows are not too dirty.
A microfiber cloth or newspaper along with the cleaning solution and some water is one of the best combinations for shining the windows. You can also use paper coffee filters if you are worried about catching the ink from newspapers on your finger.
3. Another option is to Squeegee
Another alternative to wiping the windows with a newspaper or cloth is using a squeegee to clean the windows. It also ensures a spotless and streak-free clean.
4. Don’t use hard bristle brushes and tough clothes
Using hard bristle brushes and tough clothes to clean the windows can damage them. Once I used a hard bristled brush to clean my room’s window which resulted in some scratches on the window. After that day, I have just used a microfiber cloth or sometimes a newspaper to make the windows sparkling again.
5. Cleaning Solution using Vinegar
A distilled solution of white vinegar acts as a good cleaner. Make this cleaner by mixing vinegar and warm water in equal quantity. You can take a basic measurement such as 1 cup white vinegar and 1 cup of warm water and then mix it together. Use this solution to quickly clean the windows.
If you want to use this solution for cleaning your kitchen windows, it is advisable to prewash the windows with soapy water. Or you can directly add the Dawn dishwashing liquid(around 5-6 drops) to the vinegar solution and use the resulting solution to clean the windows at once (I prefer this route). This is because kitchen windows are generally grimy. If they are not, then just use the distilled vinegar solution.
After cleaning with this vinegar-soap solution, rinse and wipe the windows to clean the soapy layer properly. For this reason, don’t add much dishwashing liquid as the dish soap may build up a soapy film which will be comparatively more difficult to clean.
cleaning service
6. An alternative to vinegar
Out of vinegar and lazy to get a new one from the shop? No need to worry. I have an alternative for you.
Black tea.
Brew a strong cup of black tea and allow it to cool for about an hour. Dip a cloth in it or fill it in a spray bottle and let it do its magic on the windows.
The tannic acid present in the tea is the main ingredient responsible for this magic. What more, you can also use Black tea for cleaning the bathroom mirrors too.
7. Ohhh…that scratch!!
Got a scratch on the window? Don’t worry. Here is an easy solution you should try out. Furbish that scratch (or scratches) using non-gel toothpaste. Personally, I haven’t tried it yet (my good luck: the windows are scratch free). I read it somewhere so I am not sure if it will work or not. You can try it out and I would be grateful if you would let me know whether it worked or not.
8. Cleaning the remnants of a sticker
I can understand that the remains of the sticker are difficult to clean as I have been through this problem. But WD-40 can make it an easy task which you can do by closed eyes. WD-40 is an awesome cleaner and can easily get that gunk off the window.
9. Getting the perfection on the edges
While wiping off the cleaning solution and water from the windows, it is for them to run all the way down and sit on the edges. Clean that accumulated liquid with a microfiber cloth or a soft cloth. Microfiber cloth soaks up the water or the cleaning solution and does not leave any lint behind on the glass. Even a soft steel wool pad works well.
Scan the windows at different angles and clean any leftover watermarks to get a perfect window.
10. Cleaning hard water spots
Hard water spots are a common occurrence on bathroom mirrors and shower doors. If the stain is so tough that vinegar is ineffective on it, use a dryer sheet. Dryer sheets are perfect for eliminating hard water stains
11. Cleaning the window screens
Window screens are full of dust, spider webs and all other kinds of dirt that we hate. A lint roller can successfully clean the window screens.

iPhone won't charge or turn on? 5 ways to fix it
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ce4103c8342fb315a45ed4bcf1499661/04b0257297cf3730-d6/s540x810/5d2af9671d3adb245f06efcf3cf7ac62a007758b.jpg)
Nowadays, mobile charging is the most important part of everyone’s daily routine, so when this regular process goes amiss, that moment is one of the most troubling and scariest moments ever. You've done everything and used every trick which you generally do, used the same cable, outlet, power adapter or even used wireless charging pad. So, why your iPhone won’t turn on? or what reason is the charge stopping at one point? Before you reached a conclusion that there's a something major issue with your battery and contact Apple Customer Support, you must understand why your iPhone won't charge? and go through some troubleshooting practices to know how to fix iPhone charging issues at home.
Understanding the causes
In any case, if your iPhone stopped charging at a certain point, that is because of its programming software that may confine charging over that amount. This is a safeguard intended to expand battery life and protect your iPhone from overheating during charging. If you also find such problems with your iPhone, try to fix the error on your own before contacting Apple support. Try charging your phone in a cooler area or removing it from charging case.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e90c267d5b430d36fd88e9f49d11c93b/04b0257297cf3730-de/s540x810/b950350925b251adc2d201ebd92dbaca8ddbb0dd.jpg)
#1. Clean the charging port
One of the main reasons your iPhone won’t charge is quite very simple; the iPhone Charging Port is blocked with gunk, debris, dust, pocket lint, or some other obstruction. Start the charging port cleaning process by using a flashlight and take a deep look at the bottom of charging point of your iPhone. If you find any gunk or debris in there, it may keep the lightning cable from making a strong connection with your iPhone. There are heaps of connectors down there and if an inappropriate one is closed off, your iPhone won't charge by any means. After you discovered lint, debris or gunk in your iPhone’s charging port, it’s the high time to wipe it out and for that you would need something that won't lead an electric charge or harm the electronics at the bottom of your iPhone. You can use a clever trick; take an anti-static brush or just a new toothbrush and gently clean out the charging port of your iPhone.
#2. Inspect for damage
After cleaning the USB port and power adapter, let’s proceed to the components that may need to replace. Next process in finding the issue in iPhone charging Port is to check all the charging accessories for damage. iPhone USB Power Adaptors Apple brand offers USB Power Adapters with a capacity of 5W, 10W, and USB-C Power Adapters with a power of 12W, 29W, 61W, and 87W as well. Whether you’re using a refurbished iPhone X or a new one, you must check out its power adapters thoroughly. Check out the below troubleshooting steps to find out if your adapter is the reason behind your iPhone won’t charging. Check all the signs of damage of your iPhone’s Power Adapter; inspect thoroughly whether there is any bent in power cord or is there any component missing. Inspect and make sure that your power adapter is an original Apple product. Verify the originality of the product by reading the product description and Apple logo. If still, your power adapter won’t start working, swap it out with another one you have, or borrow one from someone. After following these steps, if find your iPhone starts charging, then, probably you've found the main culprit! iPhone Lightning Cables If you are using an iPhone version 5 or later, then you must have a Lightning Cable to charge. Inspecting to ensure that lightning cable is working well is the next tip in iPhone charging Troubleshooting Guide. You've just cleaned your Lightning Cable, so we should proceed with a couple of more steps to ensure it's not the reason for your issue. Check for damage such as rips or fraying, feel along the cable to check if there are any sections that feel deflated or loose; this may indicate a breakage of the cable inside the sheath. Check thoroughly fraying or rips for damage, separately check the cable to see if there are any areas that are loose or flattened; this may show a breakage of the lightning cable inside the wrapped sheath. Go for another Lightning Cable and try to charge your iPhone with it. If your iPhone starts charging, then, it's time to buy a new lightning cable!
#3. Check for recent Software Updates
When you put your iPhone on charging, charging accessories, hardware parts, and even iPhone’s software also work together to empower the charge to go ahead. If your iPhone needs a software update, it may charge slowly or it won’t charge at all even though all your iPhone charging accessories are operating fine. So, if your iPhone still isn't charging, ensure your iPhone software have updated recently and that your iPhone model is compatible with all new software updates. iOS is currently running at a version of 11.2.5, which keeps running on all iPhone’s renditions 6 and later.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fb7c5a04ac5166ee67014c1a23f03dd6/04b0257297cf3730-6d/s540x810/9111d7c895cfd3ad279653af2789731f989c304c.jpg)
#4. Check the wall outlet
After following the long list of troubleshooting iPhone charging tips, you must also check your charging power source. In case you're charging your iPhone from a PC's USB port, ensure the PC is completely awake; make sure it’s not in rest or hibernation mode. Also, give a try using a different USB port, in case that the USB port you were utilizing has fizzled. Try not to charge from a USB port incorporated with your keyboard or USB hub. Connect it directly to a USB port on the PC itself. if still it won’t start working, plug it direct into a wall power outlet with an AC connector like the one that accompanied your iPhone. If you have been utilizing an AC adapter al the time, at that point try an alternate one – fetch one from a friend has an iPhone or buy a new one or use the one that accompanies an iPad.
#5. DFU Mode and Restore
Regardless of whether your iPhone won't charge, a DFU restore mode may still working on it! You've just resolved a simple software update issue and inspected your USB cable, charging accessories and the iPhone itself, so, now is the time for a final attempt, the DFU restore mode. A DFU mode is an uncommon sort of restore that can settle severe existing software issues. However, there are not many chances that a DFU restore will bring back the functionality of your iPhone, but it’s the first thing & a hopeful process to repair your iPhone at home without spending large bucks on repairing from outside.
Conclusion
Hope these iPhone troubleshooting tips help you out during the toughest time when your iPhone won’t turn on. But, still, if DFU store and all the troubleshooting tips don’t work, then it’s the time to get your iPhone repaired from an Apple Support. Contact Apple support to hire a Certified Apple Technician. Your smartphone is gross. Learn how to clean it properly.
Imagine rubbing your face on the subway rails. Yeah, you're doing that. (KE ATLAS/Unsplash/)
You can’t see it with the naked eye, but your smartphone is likely to be crawling with bacteria—perhaps even more so than your toilet seat. That’s a lot of dangerous microbes floating around, and yes, it is gross.
In this age of global travel and trade, it’s more important than ever to cut down on possible routes of infection and to stop bacteria and viruses spreading from person to person. Part of that means making sure your phone isn’t transmitting anything more than data.
And besides the potential health risks of a dirty phone, the gunk and dust gathering in your phone’s ports or around the buttons can make it harder to use. There’s also the simple aesthetic annoyance of looking at a screen that’s covered in fingerprints and other oily smudges that are part of life with a smartphone.
In short, you've got plenty of reasons to regularly give your phone a thorough clean. Not just during a pandemic, either—we should be thinking about keeping our phones bacteria-free all the time, says microbiologist Paul Turner, a professor at Yale University.
After all, we touch our phones all the time and many of us are relatively lax about cleaning them. “It sets the stage for plausible concern," Turner says. “People could be handling phones and picking up any bacteria or virus that can attach to a surface and survive for a period of time.”
Take SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, for example: Scientists are still scrambling to get solid evidence, but early research suggests that it can survive on plastic or stainless steel surfaces for two or three days. That means you could be washing your hands perfectly well, but immediately picking the virus up again as soon as you reach for your phone.
You could be doing everything right (like washing your hands and staying away from people), but if there’s a contaminated surface in your home or your pocket, you could expose yourself to the virus anyway, Turner says.
One mitigating factor is that usually we’re the only ones who touch our devices, so your smartphone isn't as potentially infectious as a doorknob in an office, for example. That said, Turner hopes increased awareness of viruses will get everyone to start periodically cleaning their devices—he recommends wiping down a smartphone around every three days.
“People are not widely cleaning their phones, and yet it only takes a few seconds,” he says. “There’s a lot of bacteria and viruses that can hang out for several days on the surface and that could make you sick.”
Cleaning your phone
You can use products you already have around. Paper towels, alcohol, and cotton swabs can come in handy. (David Nield/)
With most phones now at least water resistant—if not waterproof—and designed to take a few knocks, cleaning your phone isn’t difficult, and it’s unlikely you’ll end up with an overpriced paperweight. But it’s still a good idea to leave most of your normal cleaning products and any abrasive materials in the cupboards.
First, fully power down your handset and remove any accessories, like charging cables or headphones. If you use a case, take that off too, so you’ll have full access to all sides of your phone.
Next, you’ll need a soft, lint-free cloth. Apple recommends a lens cloth for the job, but anything similar that won’t scratch or damage your phone (like microfiber), will do.
Dampen the cloth with a little water and wipe down the front and the back of your handset, using steady, circular motions to lift off the accumulated dirt. It’s a good idea to keep one end of your cloth dry or have a separate dry cloth at hand to remove excess moisture. This is especially important near ports and buttons, where water might interfere with your phone’s normal operation.
If your phone is fully IP68 rated for waterproofing (check the specs if you’re not sure), feel free to dunk your phone in a bowl of clean water for a minute or two. You can then dab off the moisture with a cloth, cleaning it at the same time.
If you're annoyed by your oily fingerprints all over your phone, you're not going to like lint sticking to your screen. Prevent that by using a microfiber cloth. (David Nield/)
For more persistent marks and dirt, you can use some gentle face or baby wipes, or a little bit of household hand soap. If you do opt for cleaning wipes, use them sparingly and make sure they’re approved for use on electrical devices. If not, Turner says a little soap, water, and a cloth will do just fine.
Soap and water is also the preferred method of fighting any viruses that may be stuck to your phone. Hand sanitizers are popular, but experts generally believe they’re less effective, Turner says.
Some experts also recommend mixing a half-and-half solution of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol at around 60-70 percent) and water. Wet your cleaning cloth rather than your phone to get rid of any stubborn bacteria. As long as you use these substances in small amounts and avoid harsh chemicals, you’re not going to damage your device.
In fact, Apple recently updated its guidelines to suggest that in addition to water, it’s safe to use 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipes and Clorox disinfectant wipes on iPhones, as long as you keep moisture away from the ports.
Once you’ve dealt with the exterior, use cotton swabs and a few sharp, well-aimed puffs of air from your mouth to get dust and particles out of your phone’s ports. Avoid cans of compressed air though, as the pressure can interfere with the insides of your phone.
If your charging cable hasn’t been juicing up your phone as quickly as it normally does, a build-up of gunk around the main port might be one reason why. Again, your microfiber cloth can come in handy here—you can use the tip of it to tease out any accumulated dirt or dust, or wrap part of it around something small and thin (like a toothpick) for the job.
Cotton swabs can help you get the gunk out of ports, speakers, and all the nooks and crannies at the border of your screen. (David Nield/)
These are general tips, but we’d encourage you to look online for any instructions specific to your phone. Your device’s manufacturer might have some particular tips that don’t apply more broadly, or certain warnings about what not to do.
When you’ve finished the cleaning process, leave your phone alone until any remaining moisture has had a chance to dry off naturally. Only then should you turn it on again and reattach cases and accessories. Putting it on a paper towel can help.
For an even more comprehensive solution, you can treat your phone to an ultraviolet light bath—a cleaning technique that science shows can help blast certain types of bacteria off of your handset. You can pick up a PhoneSoap UV Cell Phone Sanitizer for $80, and it’ll charge your phone while it’s cleaning it. There are still questions about how effective these UV lights are, but if you can afford the extra investment, it’s a helpful additional way to keep your phone clean.

14 Useful Tips That Make Post-Holiday Cleaning Easy
This post is sponsored by Powerizer. As always, all ideas and opinions are entirely my own.
I always feel a little bit sad after the holiday season ends, but there’s something cathartic about putting my house back in order. For instance, it’s nice to reclaim the area of my living room that was taken over by our tree and gifts! But it’s very rare that I can put away our decorations without noticing the various messes that the holiday season left behind!
So in case I’m not alone in noticing that my house could use some post-holiday cleaning, that’s exactly what today’s post is all about! I’ll start by showing you how to use Powerizer Complete (my favorite do-it-all cleaning detergent) to deep clean 7 areas that are commonly affected by post-holiday grunginess, like the fridge, oven, etc.
Following that, I’ll share a few clever tips and tricks that will come in handy for the rest of your post-holiday cleanup tasks! Once you’ve read this post, you’ll be ready to clear out the post-holiday mess and start the new year with a clean slate—and an even cleaner home!
7 Things To Deep Clean After The Holidays
1. Fridge
After the last few weeks of cooking, baking, and storing leftovers, your fridge could probably use a good cleaning! Start by throwing out anything that’s old or empty. Then set aside the remaining food so you can clean inside the fridge itself.
Stir 1 scoop of Powerizer into 16 ounces of hot water. Use the cleaning solution and a clean cloth to wipe down the shelves, drawers, and bins. Once everything is clean, replace the food in an organized way. Much better!
2. Dishwasher
Your dishwasher has been working overtime to clear away all that heavy holiday food residue from your dishes. All that gunk can build up on the inside of your dishwasher and make your dishwasher less effective!
But the good news is that it’s easy to clear out all that food gunk, and leave the inside of your dishwasher looking good as new. Start by hand-washing the removable filters, if your dishwasher has any. Then put 1 scoop of Powerizer Complete into the bottom of your empty dishwasher, and run a cycle on the hottest water setting. And that’s all there is to it!
For more great ways to use Powerizer to keep your dishes clean, check out the post at the link below!

3. Bathrooms
If you played host to any guests over the holidays, your bathrooms could probably use a good cleaning too. You can use Powerizer Complete to make a cleaning solution that works on countertops, sinks, toilets, tile, floors, and more! Get all the details on cleaning your bathroom with Powerizer at the link below.

4. Floors, Carpets & Upholstery
If spills or splatters during your holiday dinners resulted in floor messes or carpet or upholstery stains, use Powerizer to get rid of them! It’s best to tackle those areas now, while the spills are still relatively fresh. (They’ll get harder to remove the longer they sit!)
To clean your floors, dissolve 1 scoop of Powerizer in 1 gallon of warm or hot water. Use this mixture with a mop to mop your floors. To rinse, mop the area again using a bucket of clean water.
To remove stains from carpet and upholstery, stir 1 scoop of Powerizer Complete into 16 ounces of warm water. Transfer the solution to a squeeze bottle and apply it to the stain. Wait 5 minutes, then blot the stain with a clean, wet cloth to lift the stain and rinse the cleaner out. Once the stain is gone, blot the area dry with a clean, dry cloth.
5. Oven
My oven is currently in pretty rough shape after all the cooking and baking I’ve been doing. But at least I know that with Powerizer, cleaning my oven up will be quick and easy with no harsh chemical smell.
Just mix 1 scoop of Powerizer Complete into 16 ounces of warm water. Then pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it onto the dirtiest areas for a good spot cleaning. If your oven needs a more heavy duty cleaning, you can make a paste of Powerizer and water for those burnt-on or caked-on areas.
6. Stovetop
You can use the same amounts of Powerizer and warm water listed above to clean your stovetop! Just pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it all over your stovetop. Let the cleaning solution sit for a few minutes to break up the mess, then wipe clean with a damp clean cloth.
7. Stove Hood Filter
It’s easy to forget about your stove hood filter! But it’s important to give it a good cleaning every once in a while. After all, your stove hood won’t do you very much good if the filter is covered in grease!
Add 1 scoop of Powerizer to a big bowl of hot water, and stir to dissolve. Submerge the filter in the water (or as much of it as you can) and let it sit for 20 minutes. Repeat if necessary to clean the rest of the filter, then rinse with clean water. Let your freshly cleaned filter dry completely before replacing it.
7 Bonus Tips For Post-Holiday Cleanup
8. Pick Up Pine Needles
Vacuums can struggle to pick up all those stray pine needles that are scattered across the carpet. Instead, use a lint roller to pick them up! It’s easy and effective. (This works for needles from both real and fake trees too!)
9. Dust Your Garland
Depending on how long you’ve had your garlands hung around the house, they could be looking a bit dusty at this point. Before putting them back into storage, use the cool setting on your hair dryer to blow the dust right off! (Do this outside if possible to avoid blowing dust all over your house.)
10. Make An Ornament Storage Box
Need someplace safe to store your Christmas ornaments? If you have a spare storage bin handy, you can make your own ornament storage box! All you need is some cardboard, some plastic cups, and your trusty hot glue gun. Check out the full instructions below!
Related: Make Your Own Christmas Ornament Storage Box
11. Wrap Your Lights
When you’re putting away your string lights, wrap them around a piece of cardboard first. It’s much easier to store them this way, and they won’t get tangled up! You can also write on the cardboard to remind yourself where you had those lights hanging (like “front porch” or “on the tree,” for instance.)
12. Set Up A Donation Station
You and your family probably got some new stuff for Christmas. It’s always a good idea to donate the old stuff if you can! Make it easy by setting out a big box where everyone can put their old stuff they’d like to donate. This “donation station” will make it easy to control the post-holiday clutter.

13. Organize Your Returns
If you or your family received anything you need to return, keep all of those items organized in one place. Tape the receipt to the item (if you have it), and make a note of the date that each item needs to be returned by. You’ll have a much easier time with your returns if you have all the important details written down in once place!
14. Clean Your Vacuum
In order for your vacuum to work correctly, you need to clean and maintain it! And it could probably use some attention after all that holiday cleanup. Check out my easy step-by-step guide for keeping your vacuum clean at the link below.

6 Common Cleaning Tasks You Probably Forgot (That Will Make Your Home Cleaner and Safer!)
Do you use a cleaning schedule? Having a set schedule of what gets cleaned each day, each week, and each month (like those in our free cleaning binder) can make keeping up on seasonal cleaning tasks so much more doable, and, in fact, make it feel like there is less cleaning to do when spring cleaning and fall cleaning times roll around. But… there are still a few tasks that often get forgotten amongst the baseboards and drain cleaning and daily clean-up tasks. So today we’ve partnered with Filtrete to talk about 6 common cleaning tasks you probably forgot — and these easy jobs will help your home be both safer AND cleaner this year!
6 Common Cleaning Tasks You (Probably) Forgot
1: Clean Your Vacuum
Your vacuum certainly *does* plenty of cleaning, but when was the last time you cleaned your vacuum, like really cleaned it? Am I right??
Can you imagine what kid of dust, dirt and little biological creatures are spewing from you vacuum?! EWW!! Clean your vacuum people and while you are at it, make sure you have the best filters in it possible.
Did you know that a full vacuum bag OR a clogged filter can inhibit your vacuums’s power, reduce suction and leave allergens and dust behind? Also, if you notice that your vacuum seems to be losing suction, you may not need to go buy a new one, simply replacing the bag and filters may restore the suction you have lost!
Filtrete is a leader in residential air filtration and the most trusted brand of indoor heating and cooling air filters on the market, and did you know they make vacuum filters, too? In fact, to make this vacuum maintenance even easier, Clean & Cook Supply Website is an awesome new site for all the replacement parts you need for any brand of vacuum (so you can shop in your pajamas). This is how we get things done!!
So what about timing? How often you should change your vacuum bag, filter and belts?
VACUUM BAGS: Change every 1-2 months. Obviously you need to be changing out vacuum bags frequently. Replace them with Filtrete vacuum bags every 1-2 months; don’t wait til it is so full you lose suction. Why go to all the effort of vacuuming if you don’t have full suction power? The new Clean & Cook Supply Website makes it easy to order online so you always have replacement bags ready when you need them.
VACUUM FILTERS: Change every 3-6 months (so this is a good one to add to your spring and fall cleaning lists). Filtrete filters help to improve the air quality of your home by trapping small particles of dust, pollen, and pet dander. They can trap particles that are 75 times smaller than a human hair – including 99.97% of dust mite debris, animal dander, molds and pollen. Even if your vacuum has a washable filter, you should know that repeated washing can cause the fiber of the filter to break down over time and not work as efficiently. Let’s be honest – if I am going to go to the work of cleaning my house, then I want it to work as efficiently as possible, so using a replaceable, highly efficient Filtrete vacuum filter will help our house stay cleaner, by not just pushing that crap back out into the air, and that sounds like a good plan to me.
VACUUM BELTS: Replace as needed. If your vacuum is making funny noises and not picking up debris, it may be a broken belt. To see if a belt is broken, turn it on and look to see if the brush roll is spinning. If it’s not, your belt is likely broken. You can replace it on the Clean & Cook Supply website for a cost effective, quick fix.
Remember this care that you take with your vacuum is a budget-saver in the long run, as it will keep your vacuum running better and extend the life of your vacuum!
2: Clean Your Dishwasher
Again, your dishwasher works hard every day (and sometimes twice a day) cleaning the dishes , but have you ever cleaned the dishwasher? Especially if you have hard water like we do, it’s really important to do an annual checkup and make sure everything is clean and running smoothly. Every dishwasher has different specific parts but in general you’ll want to follow these steps to rid your machine of grease, food debris, and soap scum:
Step 1: Clean the drain and seal. Remove the bottom rack and clear the drain and filter at bottom of the dishwasher interior. (If your dishwasher has a removable filter, remove and clean it as well.) Inspect the dishwasher seal and clean any build-up.
Step 2: Clean with vinegar. Run an empty dishwasher cycle with a cup of vinegar, using hot water. You can dump the vinegar right into the dishwasher, but we suggest placing the cup of vinegar in a dishwasher safe cup or bowl on the top rack. As the water runs through the dishwasher cycle, the vinegar is dispersed and cleans the dishwasher interior.
We keep up this cleaning every cycle by adding vinegar to each load of dishes we wash. In addition to keeping the dishwasher clean, it keeps our dishes sparkling even with the hard water in our area.
Step 3: Deodorize. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short hot-water cycle. (Our dishwasher has a sanitize cycle that is perfect for this.) Baking soda will also help remove any stains from the dishwasher interior.
If you have stubborn dishwasher stains and grime, you might also try a cleaning additive like LemiShine.
Step 4: Clean the dishwasher exterior. Now that the interior is sparkling clean, shine up the outside as well!
3: Clean Your Washing Machine
We recently had some washer maintenance done and the service tech told me that we should be cleaning our front-load washer once a month! Oops! Spring and fall cleaning is a great time to rectify those tasks that don’t get done often enough, at least at our house.
Our front loader has a specific sanitize setting, so that makes it easy. You should also be washing the gasket regularly to avoid that musty smell that a lot of front-loading washers get.
If your washing machine doesn’t have a sanitize cycle, the process is still pretty easy. Vinegar comes to the rescue, again! Run a hot water batch, with the water to the highest fill level. While the washer is filling, add 1 quart of vinegar and let the vinegar run through the wash and rinse cycle. For top-loading machines, you can open the lid and allow the vinegar water to soak if you’d like.
Be sure to also wash the soap dispenser and any other high-gunk places on the washer. This is also a good time to check the connections to the hoses at the back of the machine to make sure they are tight with no leaks or drips.
4: Clean Your Dryer
You clean the lint filter every load of laundry (hopefully), but lint builds up other places in your dryer, too. At least twice a year, it’s good practice to vacuum the lint filter holder (we always find spare change, par-tay!) and use gentle soap and water to clean the lint filter, too. (Let it fully dry before you put it back in the machine, of course.)
The lint filter in the dryer vent can pose a major fire hazard, so fall and spring cleaning is a great time to clean around the dryer and clean out the vent and ducts, too. Disconnect the dryer vent hose and remove any visible lint from both the hose and the machine. A long flexible brush or a vacuum cleaning attachment are helpful.
5: Check and Replace Batteries
I try to remember to do this every time Daylight Saving Time starts and ends, which also conveniently coincides with fall and spring cleaning, but anytime you remember to check, do it! Check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace as needed.
6: Check the Fire Extinguisher
Most home fire extinguishers last 10-12 years, but check the expiration date on yours because you want it ready when you need it! If it is expired, missing an inspection tag, or shows signs of excessive wear (such as a cracked seal, broken nozzle, or missing pin) contact your local fire department to learn about your options for recharging or replacing it. Remember, a fire extinguisher needs inspected and recharged after each use.
None of these tasks take very long or cost much money, but they’ll help your home be cleaner AND safer in the coming year.
Thank you Filtrete and Clean & Cook Supply Website for partnering with us on this post. We love your products and have been using them for years. All opinions are our own.

How to keep your washing machine smelling fresh
If odour comes from your washing machine quite frequently, you need to take some action against this common problem instantly. If ignored and not cleaned properly, washing machines can lock unpleasant smells. As these large appliances require special attention, regularly cleaning of the gasket and drum of a front load washing machine won’t let mildew grow. With proper cleaning and care, washing machines can smell amazing too. Find out how to keep mould and bacteria at bay, and make your washing machine smell great again.
Cleaning the Washing Machine – Interiors
To keep your front load washing machine smelling fresh, clean the gasket, drum and other parts regularly. While pulling back the gasket, check for any objects between the rubbers. Also, check for dust or hair in the gasket. If it looks dusty, keep the washer closed until it’s cleaned properly. Observing black spots in this area is the sign that the gasket is left moist after the last wash. With the help of a mildew cleaner or hot soapy water, you can ensure that moisture doesn’t cause the mould to grow in the gasket. You also need to wipe the gasket with a clean cloth or rag. If black moulds or mildew spots aren’t going away, then use a bleach solution to scrub the mildew. Use the combination of 1/2 cup of bleach and detergent or fabric softener to deep clean the gasket once a month.
Now, the next step is of cleaning the drum. Pour one-third cup of baking soda inside the drum to prevent the formation of odour. Load two cups of white vinegar into the detergent tray and close the door. Now turn the washer on to complete the cleaning cycle, full wash and rinse cycle. If the machine is still smelly, then run a cycle with bleach by loading two cups into the bleach dispenser. Now run two rinse cycles. Also, remove and clean the detergent dispenser panel by soaking it in warm water. To eliminate unwanted smell, remove the panel, spray it with all-purpose cleaner, and wipe it clean. Frequently clean the detergent dispenser panel or tray after each wash cycle.
Cleaning the Washing Machine – Exterior
While you primarily need to clean your washing machine from inside, the outer surface of your machine also needs cleaning rounds, every now and then. The outside of a washing machine can get dirty from lint, dust, dripping laundry supplies. To avoid scratch on the surface, don't use anything abrasive. Water with a few drops of dish soap is enough. Damp a cloth with this solution, and use it to clean the exterior of a washing machine. Wipe and clean under the lid and around the top of the washer tub to remove dirt, lint, and soap scum if you have a top loader at home.
Other tricks to keep it smelling good
High-end front-loader washing machines are prone to bad smells because of bacteria and mould building up inside. In between loads, leave the washer door open. Avoid using liquid fabric softener in your washing machine, as the build-up of "gunk" can be because of it. If you use store-bought fabric softener, dilute it with water before pouring it into the washer. Try using less detergent, as recommended in the manual.
The problem may not always be with your washing machine, but with your water heater. If water is set below 140 degrees, then you might experience bad smell due to iron and sulphur bacteria. Flush the tank and pipes, and then increase the standing hot water temperature if you notice any odour in the indoor water supply.
