Spartober Day 22 Mercenary (VerDante)
Tumblr media
Author's note: It took me a while to get an idea for this i wont lie, but i had fun writing it, yes this it hinted spardacest for all parties involved, hope you Enjoy today prompt nonetheless!!
Prompts by Whatsanapocalae1 (I use a combination of SparTpber and Devil MayTober)
22: Mercenary (VerDante) Dante blew smoke from ebony and ivory as he finished using them putting them iin the holsters on his side with a smirk, he was proud of another job well done. he sat back in his seat waiting for another call as he propped his legs up on the desk, his eyes looked back at Vergil.
Vergil stares at Dante for a moment before speaking in a calm and quiet, yet still stern and sharp tone.
“How did the job go?” he asked looking up from his book of poetry.
"Ah the usual, kicking ass taking names…buuut i'll admit Verg, it wasn't the same without you by my side…" Dante said with a fond look.
Vergil in turn, raises a brow, giving Dante a look. His tone changes to something a bit softer.
“Are you saying you miss me already?” he asked with a teasing tone and a smirk.
"Well to be fair we have years of quality time to make up for…" Dante said as he stretched his arms out with a yawn cracking his knuckles behind his head as he looked back at Vergil with a grin.
“I would not have imagined seeing you this.. sentimental.”Vergil chuckles quietly. Setting his poetry aside, giving Dante his full attention amused by his brother’s attitude.
“You seem in good spirits,” he said gently.
"Of course I am..I kicked demon ass, we cleared up the Qliphoth..what's not to like?..the only thing that would make this better is some Pizza '' Dante smirked happily; about to say something heartfelt when the phone rang out.
He kicked his foot against the desk making the receiver fly in the air while I swiftly caught it and answered with a confident charming tone smirking as he spoke "Devil May Cry '' . He nodded and listened to the caller writing down details of the job.
Vergil looked at Dante quizzically as he asked “We have a job?”
His curiosity has peaked now.
Dante shushed Vergil with a finger as he listened closely to the caller , he nodded gently "uh huh..uh huh..alright.." he put the phone down and sighed softly.
"Well Vergil, it seems this is a two man job, care to join me this time?" he said offering his gloved hand out for him to take.
Vergil considers Dante’s offer for a moment, thinking deeply about his choice. Then he eventually nods, extending his gauntleted hand to Dante.
“Very well then…I will join you.”
Dante smirked "Great, we're taking my bike out to the graveyard!" he said as he grabbed Vergil's hand pulling him out of the office and out of the building with childlike excitement.
He smiles just a bit as Dante pulls him by his arm, allowing the man to drag him out of the building and onto his motorcycle.
He looks ahead and watches the road as Dante revs the motorcycle.
"Hang on tight" Dante chuckled as he revved the engine and took off feeling Vergil's arms wrap around his waist. a gust of wind blowing through their hair as they made their way to the cemetery.
Vergil holds onto Dante tightly, making sure he doesn't fall off. He then looks over at Dante.
“Have you received any details about the job? “He asked with a curious tone.
"Yeah , All i know is it's a huge demon dude and it's gonna take two demon hunter to take him down so i figured why not get you in on the case, we can really bust some heads" Dante yelled out over the roar of the engine and the whizz of the wind.
Vergil nods in understanding and remains on the motorcycle, looking ahead.
“I expect the demon to be a tough one if it requires two of us. I will be sure to give my best.” He said with a determination in his voice.
"You always do Vergil" Dante said as he took a sharp turn making Vergil cling to him tightly he smirked at the vice like grip from his brother as he chuckled to himself "heh cute"
Vergil seems a bit embarrassed at the compliment and grips Dante tighter.
He looks ahead to see the cemetery up ahead. “It seems we are here..”
Dante hits the breaks as it comes to a rough halt as sparks flew from the engine, he revved up the engine for show as he sighed happily "Heh, look at us.." he said with a smirk hopping off of the motorbike before offering a hand to Vergil to help him get off of it.
Vergil takes Dante’s hand and gets off the motorcycle, looking around the cemetery before speaking to you.
“Do you feel something?”
He asked while he looked around at the surroundings, his tone changing to something a bit more serious.
"Yeah..it feels really warm. Hell, I can feel it in the back of my throat like cinnamon burning …" Dante said softly, he swallowed softly it all felt strangely familiar.
Vergil takes in a deep breath, sensing the feeling of sin and malice in the air.
“This place reeks of demons..”
He states calmly while looking around once more.
He then turns to Dante, his blue eyes shining with determination.
“We must proceed with caution…”
"Agreed…" Dante said as they both walked slowly into the graveyard there was ash and singed grass where footprints led them to where they needed to be, the smell of brimstone in his nostrils as they walked hand in hand to their fate.
They continue walking through the cemetery, the smell of sin and brimstone growing stronger as they approach the source of the aroma. An odd feeling suddenly appears within Vergil's mind and a hint of familiarity washes along his very soul..
“This place… seems… familiar…” Vergil said thoughtfully
"Yeah..it does.." Dante said in between breaths as he sighed his eyes fixated on the fiery embers that emanated from the shadowy figure mere feet away from them.
The sight of the figure fills Vergil with a strange feeling. With each step he takes forward, his past grows brighter in his mind, his thoughts flooding with both regret and longing.
“This place… this… demon..”
He seems to whisper, as the feeling becomes more and more apparent.
“I remember this…”
The demon turned to face them, their red irises digging into their very souls, curled horns that resembled Ram's horns adorned his head as he watched the pair.
Dante stared back at the Demon holding Vergil close to his side as his eyes widened; he knew exactly who this was but didn't dare his name out of fear and anger. his blood boiled as he clenched his teeth holding back from saying anything.
Vergil's gaze locks with the demon's, his eyes filling with rage and determination. A burning hatred ignites within his veins, his eyes widening and narrowing as he fights to contain this new surge of emotions.
His teeth clench at the sight of the demon, a feeling of betrayal and regret washing upon him like a river's flood.
“No.. it cannot be…”
Dante sighed as he reached for the rebellion only to be taken from him by the Demon, the sword being summoned from his grasp. Dante growled as he yelled "Hey!".
Vergil sees Dante's Rebellion being taken away and looks at the demon with fury burning in his eyes.
He tightens his grip on his own sword, determined to avenge his brother's fallen weapon.
“Give that back.” He barks out, his voice hard and demanding. The Yamato is summoned and is held in the Demon's hand its then that they realise just who it is as the two swords combined in a hellfire glow of red and amber, the light almost blinding to most humans but to the Sparda twins it was just a bright light, the pair holding their arms above their heads in attempt at shielding the light.
Once the light died down the Devil sword showed itself leaving the boys in awe of the demon that stood before them.
Vergil and Dante stare at the sword, both in awe and horror as a wave of emotions wash over them. Their brother's signature blade, yet it was fused with a demon's…
“Impossible…”
Vergil mutters to himself, his mind reeling from the impossible sight. A mix of thoughts fill his head, the rage he felt before now replaced with a profound sadness within him. He is speechless, his eyes glued to the blade as he walks closer to the demon.
The Demon held the sword and tilted his head watching Vergil closely he kept him away with the tip of the sword "Stay back" he said in a gravelly tone, the way he spoke was closer to Vergil's vocabulary rather than Dante's.
The familiar Tone made Dante take a step back in shock; he couldn't believe his ears, he had heard that before plenty of times as a child, that booming voice that demanded respect and shook Dante to his very core.
"N-NO…" was all he could stammer out in awe.
Vergil stares at the demon with a mixture of shock and recognition, his eyes moving back and forth between the demon and the sword. His ears perk up as Dante seems to recognize the voice, and he glances at his brother, his emotions changing to shock, as he hears the familiar voice.
“Is..that…?”
He is speechless, trying to piece the puzzle together as the emotions within him change again from shock to fear in the face of such a monster, yet a small spark of hope grows within him, like a flame being ignited within his very soul.
"Father?" Vergil asked in disbelief, reaching out to him like a lost child, the very same child that ached for him to return to protect them all. He missed him dearly but he was so..so..Angry.. he clenched his fists and growled.
"Sparda!" Dante said in unison with Vergil showing the same anger if not more anger for all the pain he had been given during his youth.
Sparda’s eyes widened at the sound of both the boys referring to him as "Father", a mix of emotions washing over him. A sense of pride, sadness and both happiness and sorrow. He seems conflicted about what he should feel, a small smile appears on his face and fades away.
He slowly nods as his eyes remain on the boys.
“Yes…My dear boys…”
He finally replies with a hint of a smile, still holding the Devil sword in his hand, his voice calm and solemn, but filled with an underlying pride to have been recognized by his two only sons, he hoped his return would be a happy one, but it seemed he alot to to do in order to gain the twins’ trust back…

Gentlemen Bikers
I've been riding motorbikes for a very long time. I can think of no greater pleasure than pulling on a bit of leather and pottering off on Bernie the Bonneville for an afternoon ride on a warm, dry Sunday. There's always the bonus of running into like-minded mature gentlemen on their own steeds.
Tumblr media
A classic bearded man on a classic bike with, of course, a classic pair of leather gloves.
Tumblr media
An old-style full leather biker has a way of getting my heart pumping, especially with a white moustache like this fine man's.
Tumblr media
I don't really go for the full leather combo, unless it's a gentleman out and about on his motorcycle. In that case, it is pure perfection.
Tumblr media
Jacket and corduroy trousers, a good bit of facial hair and those beautiful leather gauntlets. Now that's the kind of British gentleman I subscribe to. Sometimes you don't need to go for full leather.
They're always worth getting to know, and some of them I catch up with regularly. They're not always gentlemen of my and Brian's persuasion, but some are and, just occasionally, we've ended up having as much fun off the bikes...

Title: "Revving Towards Change"
Chapter 1: The Uniform Transformation
In the quaint town of Bellington, nestled amidst rolling hills and serene landscapes, stood the prestigious Bellington Private School for Boys. Known for its traditional values and rigorous academic curriculum, this all-boys school had been a symbol of excellence for generations. However, change was on the horizon.
Chapter 2: Full Throttle Attire
The school administration, with a desire to infuse a sense of adventure and excitement into the students' lives, made an audacious decision. They decided to replace the conventional uniforms with full motorcycle racing gear for boys from year 6 to year 13. Each student would now receive a peac leather race suit, complete with racing boots, full gauntlet gloves, a full-face helmet, and even earplugs to protect their sensitive hearing.
Chapter 3: The Muffled Voices
As the boys donned their new racing gear, they discovered a curious side effect caused by the mandatory use of mouth guards. The boys found themselves speaking with a slight lisp, which initially caused much amusement and laughter. However, they quickly adapted and embraced their newfound speech impediment, turning it into a unique characteristic that bonded them further.
Chapter 4: Silenced Sounds
The earplugs, designed to protect the students' hearing from the deafening roar of motorcycle engines, inadvertently created a world of silence for the boys. Everyday sounds became muffled, and they had to rely on visual cues and gestures to communicate effectively.
Chapter 5: The Language of Riders
Realizing the need for effective communication in this new environment, the school introduced a sign language system based on motorcycle-related gestures. Technicians and students alike learned to use these signs during lessons and around the school campus. The signs included mimicking the twisting of a throttle to express excitement, tapping on the side of the helmet to signify understanding, and even revving an imaginary engine to convey urgency.
Chapter 6: Conversations in Motion
In the hallways, classrooms, and the school courtyard, boys engaged in conversations using both their lisp-affected speech and the newly acquired sign language. A typical interaction might involve one student saying, "Hey, did you see the way I handled that sharp corner?" as he simultaneously signed by twisting an imaginary throttle and pointing to his racing gear.
Chapter 7: A Lifestyle Shift
The uniform change not only transformed the boys' appearance but also influenced their lifestyle. They embraced the spirit of adventure and camaraderie that came with the motorcycle racing gear. Weekends were spent exploring new roads and organizing their own mini racing events. The boys began to develop a deep passion for motorcycles, fueling their desire to learn and grow in this exhilarating world.
Chapter 8: The School's New Identity
As the school thrived and the students excelled in both academics and racing, the institution decided to adopt a new name that reflected its newfound identity. Bellington Private School for Boys became known as "Veloce Academy." This name, derived from the Italian word for "speed," perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the school and its commitment to nurturing young minds with a love for motorcycles and the road.
Epilogue:
Veloce Academy became a beacon of innovation, inspiring other schools to embrace unconventional methods of education. As the years passed, the motorcycle racing gear became synonymous with the school's legacy, shaping the lives of boys and leaving an indelible mark on the community of Bellington.

Avengers Assemble - Feral Outlaw Stony
So I've been expanding on this concept I doodled before Christmas, where Steve goes with Tony into the no-tech dimension at the end of season 3. Probably a lot of stuff isn't canon-compliant (beyond the obvious change that is), but "It's an AU so I do what I want" rules apply. Anyway.
The tl;dr is: The two of them spend a little time puttering around the weird no-tech dimension, and then get absorbed into Battleworld. They become explorers, helping people out and falling in love along the way.
(Once again, I feel like someone must have had this idea already, but I’ve never looked.)
Cut for excessive rambling.
~~~
Not all the areas we see in the show are present in Battleworld when Steve and Tony first arrive, so the boys spend most of their time traveling around, mapping the place out as it expands. A lot of my ideas rely on them still having little-to-no access to modern conveniences. Obviously someplace modern has to show up for them to get their hands on a pickup truck and a motorcycle, but I’m picturing a post-apocalyptic junkyard that’s been picked clean of anything obviously useful. They get the vehicles working by sheer force of “I’m Tony-fucking-Stark.” But like that fully functional NYC area is way too convenient, so it’s not around yet. (tbh I’m not even sure if it’s an alternate NYC or theirs, in which case it wouldn’t show up until the other Avengers do anyway)
They get the low-down on the "Battleworld" concept by eavesdropping on one of Beyonder's* welcome speeches. They realize that they are uniquely off the grid, because Beyonder didn't know they were in the no-tech dimension when he added it to Battleworld. They decide it's advantageous to maintain this secret status, but they're still Avengers™️ so they can't NOT help out wherever they can. But they don’t stick around any one place for long. Basically, they become vagrant vigilantes in addition to surveyors. They get a lot of their “stuff” (clothes, tools, toiletries, etc) as payment for odd jobs, or gifts from grateful locals they rescue. They get some food from populated areas as well, but also rely on foraging and hunting while on the lam. They have definitely eaten dinosaur at some point.
(*He doesn't get the nickname "Beyonder" until the other Avengers show up. In this AU Steve and Tony refer to him as "The Entity" or "Suspenders." You can probably guess who tends to use which.)
On top of the survival story, it's also a getting-together story. Steve and Tony flirt and pine and bicker and flirt some more, until a squabble turns into a confession and they finally start kissing. There’s plenty of time for “it’s cold in this wasteland and we only have one blanket, oh no,” but they’re firmly established as romantically involved by the time the other Avengers show up and they have the final showdown with Beyonder.
Anyway a lot of the AU notes I've been making are about the functional side of their Big Camping Adventure. So here's a bunch of lists about vehicles, gadgets, and navigation.
~
Vehicle stuff:
If Tony is riding passenger on the motorcycle, he can clip his repulsor boots into special footrests that reroute the energy and give the bike a speed boost.
The bike has a tow cable. Steve can harpoon things using a spring-action firing mechanism, including cliff faces to help him scale steep terrain. The cable can also be uncoiled manually, like when Tony takes flight while holding the end so he and Steve can clothesline hostiles.
Steve can stick his shield several places on the bike depending on what’s convenient. On the front as a windscreen/battering ram, on one side for easy grabbing, and even on Tony’s backpack so Tony can snuggle in properly while riding passenger and keep both their backs protected.
They probably don’t even need a ramp to get the bike into the bed of the pickup. Steve just picks it up and puts it there.
The evolution of Marsha (the truck) into a full Hulkbuster-style mech takes a long time. For the majority of their time in Battleworld, it’s just a truck with an ever-increasing number of weird add-ons.
Marsha can function as a tiny camper home. The cargo bed liner is a false bottom, which can be pulled up and rearranged to form a cover/roof. Underneath the liner, the actual truck bed is about a foot deeper, with most of that storage space taken up by a mattress and bedding.
Tony can pull a cable out of Marsha’s steering column and plug it directly into his arc reactor. This unlocks extra features and weapons. He generally has things balanced so that Marsha drawing power doesn't affect him any more than his armor drawing power would. But on rare and desperate occasions, he can overclock and hurt himself. Steve of course hates when he does this.
Turnabout is fair play though: at least once, something else damaged the arc reactor, so Tony plugged into Marsha to draw power from the battery for his electromagnet while he repaired the arc.
Gasoline can be difficult to procure, so both vehicles are hybrids. Tony just keeps adding new power conversion elements as they go along, based on what they can find.
~
F in chat for Tony’s armor:
Tony dismantles the armor he’d been wearing when they first went into the no-tech dimension.
Obviously he keeps skeletal versions of the repulsor boots and gloves in-tact enough to function.
He also keeps most of the helmet, for when he’s riding with Steve on the motorcycle. Mostly because Steve insisted. It's gutted of tech though, so if the faceplate stays as part of the design, the eyes are just holes (like in the classic comics).
The rest of the pieces are kept in a large packing trunk.
Tony repurposes some parts into useful gadgets for himself and Cap, plus the odd toy for other Avengers (like Widow’s new stinger gauntlets) because he’s optimistic like that.
Electronics use precious metals like gold and copper, so Tony scrapes some out to pay for things in certain areas of Battleworld, like the cowboy town or the pirate area. He might also barter with other general bits like wires and screws, but he avoids parting with any actual full tech.
~
Plug-n-play Gadgets
Since the power draw for Tony's electromagnet is actually fairly minimal, Tony makes use of the arc reactor as a charging station, mostly when he sleeps. It's not like there's a corner store they can drop by to get a pack of batteries. Things he charges include (but are not limited to):
Flashlight for Steve. The bulbs for it came from the eyes in the Iron Man helmet. Note: Tony doesn't need a flashlight himself because he can turn up his arc brightness apparently, lmao.
Camp stove. Steve questioned Tony building one for a hot second because hello we can build campfires to cook over? But then it’s raining and they're in a cave and Tony is like, "if you fill this space with smoke I will divorce you before we're even married." And Steve is like "camp stove wow yes okay." Also they had camp stoves in WW2 so honestly it was simply a Himbo Moment to disregard the virtues of one in the first place.
Walkie talkies. I know they had Avengers comms but I like the aesthetic of walkie talkies more. Maybe the comms relied on satellites that they obviously don't have anymore or something.
~
Navigation:
Speaking of a lack of satellites, the GPS in Tony’s armor is rendered useless. Steve is real smug about it and pulls out his old-fashioned compass. But Battleworld also doesn’t have proper poles, so it just spins wildly for a few seconds and then points at Tony’s electromagnet. Not to be deterred, Steve declares, “Well, you’re never lost if you can find Polaris.” They look up and realize that the night sky, despite having stars and a moon, is not at all arranged the way it is on Earth.
Tony takes this as a Challenge. He builds a sextant, then spends the next several nights in a row muttering math under his breath as he painstakingly creates a hand-drawn star chart. This, combined with landmarks, becomes the primary way they orient themselves as they roam around Battleworld.
Many nights, Steve and Tony lie in the bed of the pickup together and make up constellations named after other Avengers and friends. Steve makes a copy of Tony’s star chart and sketches artistic renditions of the constellations on top. To close this post with an interesting visual, here’s an example of what Tony’s star map might look like vs what Steve’s would more resemble:
A Step in the Right Direction
Tumblr media
The instruments said I had 7km of range left. This was going to be a problem as home was 9km away. The last 2km was downhill so maybe I would make it to the top of the hill and roll down. Setting off from Scarborough Beach in mode 1, which limited me to a top speed of 60kmh, I quickly became a mobile chicane for the traffic behind me on West Coast Highway. Flicking it to mode 2 upped my top speed to 80kmh but it'd reduce my range even further but at least I wouldn’t be a hood ornament for a Hot Rod doing bog laps of the coast road. I made the decision to remain alive and push the bike as I selected mode 2 and accelerated up to 80kmh, turning off into Trigg, a distance of 1km. According to the instruments, I had 4km of range left. I was optimistically hoping that the bikes computer would give me a false reading and keep a little bit in reserve but any hope of that faded when the instrument went from 4km left to 2km left in one foul swoop. I was still 5km from home. 2km became 1km and then as it hit 0 range the throttle became non responsive to which I instinctively started swerving left to right trying to swish the fuel around hoping it’d find a bit more. Electricity doesn’t swish about a battery apparently.
Tumblr media
The Super Soco TC Max is a step up in performance from the Super Soco TS which is an alternative to small capacity scooters with its motor in the rear hub. With international flights a distant memory, there isn’t much to do running Himalayan Heroes so I arranged an extended test ride with MotoMax. I picked it up and headed into Leederville to meet up with mates on their ICE motorcycles. The smallest capacity was a 750cc twin so I'd need a head start if I was going to keep up on our regular Fast Friday ride. The starting procedure is easy, press the unlock button on the remote, press the power button on the tank with the side stand up and then hit the start button which is in the usual position at your right thumb. While my mates fiddled with keys, fuel taps, finding neutral and annoying the outdoor diners on the café strip as they revved their noisy dinosaurs to warm them up, I Marcel Marceau'd away into the night. Pulling up at the lights, they started revving for a traffic light drag race. I did the same and bunny hopped into the middle of the intersection…ooops. When the lights turned green, I was with them all the way for the first 4m and then they were gone. The TC Max is not the Tesla Roadster of electric bikes, taking 7 seconds to get to 60kmh. It’s about the same as a Honda Grom but while the Grom will sound like Cardi B with a $10 loud hailer from the Reject Store, the Super Soco is like an elevator fart.
Tumblr media
The TC Max is incredibly thin and at only 100kg it was a breeze to flick between traffic and get to the front at the lights. Unlike the Super Soco TS, the motor in the TC Max is where normal motorcycles have them (and for the owners of Harleys, the answer is not “in pieces”). With no gears, your left foot has nothing to do, however your left hand is still busy as the front brake lever is where the clutch lever usually resides. The right foot also has nothing to do as the rear foot brake lever is removed and in its place is a linked front and rear brake lever at the right hand. It takes some time to get used to it but I found that I rarely used the left hand lever. I did grab it twice, once when I nearly Crutchlow’d a 90 degree left hand corner and the other when the lights changed on me while I was daydreaming I was on a MotoE bike. Brakes are good, acceleration is adequate for its intended purpose, handling is spot on and I got nods from all types of riders so it certainly looks the part.
Tumblr media
So, is it a replacement for a motorcycle? Not its close though. It’s a replacement for a scooter or as a 2nd bike if your daily total commute is less than 70km and you don’t need to go over 80km/h. I rode the bike as I would normally on a Fast Friday ride with lots of full throttle and I made it 58km from a full charge. If I had left it on Mode 1, I would have gotten 140km before needing a charge with the top speed limited to 60kmh. Mode 2 is 90km range and limited to 80kmh which is where I would leave it until I needed to overtake a bicycle. That's when I'd flick it into mode 3 which gives you 70km range with a 95kmh top speed. You can switch between modes on the go so it’s easy enough to manage your range. Interestingly, the different modes don’t affect acceleration, only the top speed. When driving my car and the fuel gauge hits empty, I know I still have 50km of range left, when the light comes on, I have 35km left and when it starts flashing it’s time to park it in the driveway and let my wife sort it out on her way to work. Like in a car, one would quickly get used to what the numbers on the clock really mean.
The charging is a little more complicated than it needs to be. On an electric car, you plug it in and a few hours later its charged. On the TC Max, you turn the key and lift the seat, lift the tank cover, take out the glovebox tray, flick the battery lead clip off, pull the battery lead off and then plug the lead from the charger into the battery. All up it take about 30 seconds but it could be easier. At least you don’t have to ride around looking for a petrol station, waiting behind Karen who hasn't worked out that the petrol pump hose is long enough to reach the other side of the car, remove your gloves and helmet, choose your octane, get your hands covered in corona virus, run the gauntlet in the rain across the oily petrol station forecourt into the bright lights of overpriced junk food and phone chargers. You then stand in line behind grandpa who can’t remember his PIN and Wayno who orders a packet of Winnie Blues, a diet coke and a sausage roll that has been sitting there since last week before finally making it to the counter to be asked for the one loyalty card that you don’t have, all the while hoping there is enough money in your account.
While we have become accustomed to the inconveniences of ICE vehicles (refuelling, maintenance, noise and emissions), our grandkids will not fathom why we didn’t see the light earlier. The Italian manufacturer of the motorcycles used in the MotoE races – Energica, already sell a motorcycle that has hypercar acceleration, a top speed that I have never achieved and a range that is further than the vast majority of bikes. It’s not cheap of course but its early days and that will come will with time.
The TC Max is very popular with the electric motorcycle crowd, less so in the ICE motorcycle forums but I suspect that has more to do with expectations than reality. The future is bright for those that like to customise their ride, as there have already been people tinkering with the ECU to increase acceleration, top speed, continuous and momentary draw as well as regenerative braking.
Tumblr media
While I might not have made it to the top of the hill and I might have given the TC Max a lift home on a trailer and I might have had the piss taken out of me all night by my mates, I’m excited about the future of electric motorcycles. The Super Soco TC Max is a step in the right direction.
Pros
Not having to refuel
Sound of Silence
Looks great
50c for a full charge
Cons
Limited to commuting
A little too appliance like
Can measure acceleration with a sundial
Day 7
Virginia, West Virginia, Virginia (again), Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York.
Skyline Drive started in 1931. It’s 105 miles long. It winds north-to-south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its southern-most point picks up where the Blue Ridge Parkway ends. It requires a $25 entrance fee as it passes through Shenandoah National Park. It has many campsites, cabins and hiking trails plus two historic lodges with decent food and dramatic views. On my first motorcycle trip on the Parkway en-route to graduate school in Buffalo, NY I didn’t ride the Skyway. The entrance fee was too much for me then and I was just passing through. The road itself is not measurably better than the BRP. The speed limit is even slower topping out at 35 (but who are kidding). I took a short ride when the sun broke to see some of the overlooks and visit Big Meadow Lodge. A man asked “where your other two wheels?” I replied, “I don’t need ‘em”.
In the morning I put on all the layers I packed- silk base layer, leather pants, wool vest, neck warmer, electric liner under my motorcycle jacket. I couldn’t imagine wearing any of this when I left the heavy heat of Louisiana. I cuff the sleeves of my jacket tight and put on my long leather gauntlet gloves. It’s 44 degrees and I have nearly an hour of riding from Skyland Drive down the mountain to Front Royal. Electric grips keep my hands warm. The rising sun gives drama to the landscape. The wind blows hard. Small limbs and large leaves litter the road. They provide low stakes obstacles to dodge to wake-up my body and warm to the road. The surrounding forest provides relief from the brunt of the wind but the tree tops shake.
By time I’m off Skyline Drive the temperature has climbed 10 degrees. Without tree cover I feel the full force of the wind. A powerful gust while crossing the Shenandoah River assures me I’ll be contending with the wind today. I bring my body down against my tank bag, tuck my head below the wind screen, drop my elbows to my body, squeeze my legs against the tank and ride. Past a deer with its fawn. Past a bobcat walking indifferently across the road. Past a goffer with considerably more caution that doesn’t cross the road. I reacquaint myself to 6th gear. Past Harpers Ferry where in 1859 Kansas abolitionist John Brown raided an arsenal attempting to initiate an armed slave revolt- a rehearsal for the Civil War to come. Past Gettysburg where tickets are being sold for the 156 Anniversary Battle Re-enactment. Past confederate battle flags.
“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. “ Lincoln, Gettysburg address.
The dream of America remains an aspiration. Past Trump stickers adorning surfaces like graffiti. Past a home-made sign on a chain link fence that reads, “Mr. President, Great job with Mexico. Thank you.”
Lunch at the Lincoln diner. An elderly woman with a permanent hunch in her back works beside a young girl with bright rainbow highlights in the front of her hair, matching rainbow high-top sneakers and purple lipstick. Ride on. Over the Susquehanna River. Around the Pennsylvania state capital in Harrisburg and down State Street. Past crumbling colonial homes. Past decay where once there had been aspirations of grandeur. Pushing further north and east. Past stately farms and crimson painted barns.
The wind drops in the late afternoon. The air is clear and the temperature cool. Midday was 30 degrees warmer than the morning but refreshingly cool again as the sun begins to lower. Past towns, townships, villages and hamlets. Along the Delaware River. Into New Jersey then New York. At the Hudson River toll bridge they don’t take credit cards. I don’t have cash handy. In my mind I rummage through the many bags on bike trying to remember where cash may be. I apologize to the toll worker that I’ll have to dig around to find money for the fee. He says not to worry, ‘someone has left some money here’ and rises the gate. “Thank you sir, your a gentleman.” Across the Hudson River at sunset standing on the foot pegs. The Hudson River Valley is gorgeous at sunset. A Frederic Church painting come to life. Arrive in Red Hook as the last light fades. The Inn I anticipated staying in is much nicer than I thought. I hesitate to even enter but I can’t ride further. 12 hours on the bike today. It’s dark and my body aches. I take off my helmet and enter. Two women are watching tv in the den. A large grey dog comes to greet me. They ask if I’m the chaperone. I reply, “I’ll chaperone the dog for a bed for the night.” “So, you’re not the chaperone,” they ask. I tell them I suspect the chaperone won’t arrive in leather pants. I tell them my situation. She tells me the rate but then asks what I can pay. I tell her I’m a teacher from Louisiana. She cuts the rate in half. She asks if I want breakfast. I can get along without, so she drops the rate again. Now, it’s a third the listed price. I’ll take it! There’s a hot tub on the back deck and a fireplace in the room. An old wooden bar back stretches the length of the bedroom. It has two twin beds pushed together in the center of the room. It’s one block from the main intersection of town. Perfect.
I eat well to celebrate the last night on the road. I walk through Red Hook, the main streets then the surrounding neighborhood. Music is being played from a backyard which I try to find. Before I locate the house, the music stops so I walk on. I pass a home converted into a wine bar. Its candle lit and inviting. A night cap. Then return to the Bed Breakfast hot tub. I hope the heat and jets can dissolve the aches that have accumulated.
