Holy shit. Dante loves Vergil so much. The reality is that Vergil doesn’t and refuses to love him back. It doesn’t matter how many times they kill each other, how many times Dante has to say goodbye to Vergil, or see him turned into something he’s afraid of. Dante will always love him, and he will always beg to be loved back. I think that sometimes Dante will fight Vergil just to feel touched by him, or to feel acknowledged. It’s the only memory they have together but it’s not the only one he wants to have; but he feels so unloved, and craves the only connection he has left to his bloodline that he’ll do anything to feel it for a fleeting moment. Even if that feeling is pain.

It’s even in the games dialogue. Dante will describe the pain Vergil has inflicted on him as love. “When Vergil lovingly jammed this in my chest”, or on the temen ni gru when Dante asks Vergil for a kiss knowing it’s gonna be a fight to the death. (Or the infamous ‘maybe they get some sick pleasure from fighting’ line lol lady clocked them so bad). And no matter how much pain, and guilt this causes Dante he’ll go through with the fighting just to be close. Just to show Vergil how much he’s willing to do and how much he loves him.
