Sidenote: for some reason I imagined Abeno’s tunic in this scene a sort of brownish cream color kimono that he reserves specifically for Nee Year’s cleaning, when in reality he’s probably wearing his inner robe or something.

The avalanche was somewhere people couldn't easily get to, so no one was buried in it.

Abeno: It's his fault for being so bad at sensing demons' auras.

Abeno: Besides, we've been searching for Aoi since the beginning of winter break,

So Ashiya and I haven't had time to spend with Hairball. (He's started to get all restless after having to house-sit without any time to play...)

On New Year's Eve, Ashiya and Abeno finish another day of searching for Aoi, and then Ashiya is off to be with his family on their trip.

Abeno starts rolling up the Mononokean’s scroll, to the Mononokean’s consternation, and says he’s going to do his annual cleaning of the tea room since he hasn’t had time to lately.

Ashiya arrives and is greeted by his family, dodging their questions about how the trip was. He finds out Fuzzy stowed away in his backpack, and scolds Fuzzy, saying he’ll have to report this to Abeno (leaves a voicemail) while happily playing with Fuzzy.

While relaxing, Ashiya see his mother wobbling back and forth sleepily and suggests she go to sleep, but Nara wants to stay up until New Year’s with everyone. (Chisa went back to the hot springs)

Nara sleepily reminiscences about the last time they went on a vacation like this when Chisa was little, and Ashiya asks if it was before he was born.

Nara says she, Sakae, and Chisa went on vacation to a place like this, and an avalanche happened nearby. They were fine, but Sakae acted a little strange.

In the flashback, Nara watches Chisa making snowballs before noticing Sakae’s behavior, and asks what’s wrong. He asks Nara if she heard anyone calling for help. Nara tries hard to hear but says all she hears is Chisa’s humming. Sakae says if it wasn’t anything, that’s fine, but Nara worries maybe someone was caught in the avalanche. Sakae reassures her that the area is off limits to people anyway.

Sakae says they should go back in soon and calls to Chisa, who clings to her father happily. After a moment looking at Chisa, he mumbles to himself that if the voice wasn’t that of a girl’s, he would’ve been able to just ignore it and leave it alone.

He places Chisa in Nara’s arms, and tells her that he’ll be back soon, and to take care of Chisa. Nara calls after him as he starts running off.

Back in the present, Ashiya realizes that this must be the time that Sakae saved Tougen, and Nara continues that Sakae came back two hours later saying awkwardly he’d gone in the direction of the voice but didn’t find anyone.

Ashiya is about to ask his mother where they had gone on vacation but she’s fallen asleep, and after making her comfortable, Ashiya thinks about how he hadn’t been able to hear Tougen’s voice even though he’d stood right next to her, yet Sakae heard her call for help from somewhere far away. He wonders if Sakae just had good hearing, and wonders if only he could do the same and hear any yokai’s whisper, no matter from how far away, then maybe he could even find...

The sound of waves catches Ashiya’s attention, and opening the window, gets excited for how close to the ocean they are, since he hadn’t noticed, coming from the Mononokean. He thinks about how he heard the sound of waves the first day they had started searching for Aoi, and since Abeno hadn’t heard anything, dismissed it as him hearing things, but comes to a slow realization that if it wasn’t him hearing things...

Meanwhile, Abeno has finished cleaning and unrolls the Mononokean’s scroll with a sparkle of satisfaction. Noticing Fuzzy’s absence, Mononokean asks where Fuzzy is, to which Abeno replies dismissively that Fuzzy stowed away in Ashiya’s backpack. The Mononokean worries about Fuzzy being loose and Ashiya being surprised when he discovers Fuzzy, but Abeno says it’ll be Ashiya’s own fault for not noticing Fuzzy’s presence. He says he and Ashiya have been searching for Aoi, so they haven’t been able to play enough with Fuzzy lately, and although usually he’d go arrest Fuzzy, he’ll let it slide on account of it being New Year’s.

The Mononokean says there’s nothing to worry about if Fuzzy is with Ashiya, and says that Abeno should have taken it easy for New Year’s too, rather than suddenly doing so much cleaning. But then it asks if the cleaning was to keep himself distracted from the urge to go search for Aoi alone in secret from Ashiya. Abeno dismisses it a little unconvincingly, to which the Mononokean teases that it must’ve hit bullseye.

Abeno says he won’t do anything as reckless as searching alone anymore, but he’s aware that he’s starting to feel pressed, with half of winter vacation having already passed and without even a single hint of Aoi for their efforts so far.

The Mononokean asks if there really hasn’t been a single clue, and Abeno is about to reply in the affirmative before he remembers Ashiya hearing the sound of waves on the first day and freezes. 

After thinking it over a bit, he asks the Mononokean if there’s an ocean in the Underworld.

ABENO LOOKS GOOD AND SAKAE AND CHISA ARE SO CUTE AND NARA IS SO PRETTY AND THE TOUGEN STORY!!!!

I made a mistake and thought this scene was around chapter 84, so I instead colored Ashiya in the morning, in the kiyakudo, and not at night at an inn. Still, I like how both turned out so I’m posting them both. Click on “read more” to see the variant.

The mistake one:

Foliage brushes my beloved. If I can find a way to use them I will.

The edits were very fun and easy to make. I just duplicated the shading layers and changed the colors from warm and light ones to cool and dark. Some didn’t need to be changed like that and instead I just lowered the opacity. I’m pretty happy with the result.
