this roll of Fujichrome 64T is the last film from a batch of expired film i bought way back in 2011-2012, and it had been sitting in my drybox for the better part of the decade owing to my not knowing what to do with it. i had previously shot another roll of expired Fujichrome 64T and cross-processed to it some rather interesting results, but i’ve outgrown the cross-processing hype and would rather see how actual slide films turn out when processed with the proper chemicals. and for the longest time, i had no access to a film lab that would process slide films in E-6 until recently when i came across a lab in KL that accepts E-6 processing.
the timeline is kind of obscured to me now, i can’t remember if i learned of the lab first before deciding to load the 64T, or vice versa, but i really took my time with this roll. i believe just after my last trip to Osaka and Kyoto last year, i decided to take the Canon AE-1 for one last spin, taking photos via manual exposure (owing to its broken exposure meter) with the 64T loaded. and for a year, i slowly went about taking one exposure at a time. granted, its not like there were any exceptional shots, but i tried my best to take care of the exposure, in hopes that the pictures might come out as moody as the photos in Flickr suggests this film is capable of producing. it also took the lab about a month to process the film, given that they were doing E-6 processing in batches, and mine was just one measly roll to process, i waited patiently.
the results, in fact, was somewhat in line with what i expected - with the greenish blue tint that pervades the pictures adding to the atmosphere, especially on an overcast day. i frankly don’t know if that’s just how the tungsten film is supposed to look, or if this was due to the film being expired, but i dig it. another thing i especially dig about slide film is how soft the photos look. it could very well be because i was shooting wide open at F1.4 most of the time, but in all honesty, that’s the aesthetic i’ve been chasing for awhile now. there’s just some things that slide film produces quite differently from negative films, and i’d be shooting slide films more frequently if the processing (and film itself) doesn’t cost an arm and a kidney in the long run.
looking at the 64T photos, i thought about how i would go about processing the photos - do i remove the colour tinting? is it not part of the defining feature of taking photos with a tungsten film? will it seem disingenuous if i uploaded my shots without that tint? i’ve decided to put that thought off and upload my shots as is (with a little tweak to the contrast), so forgive me if the colours do not necessarily represent the actual look of a Fujichrome 64T photograph. in my defense, this is an expired film, after all.
thus, that is the last roll of 35mm film in my drybox. all i have left are 120 film (plus some disposable cameras i’ve yet to finish shooting with). furthermore, i guess this may very well be the last time i’ll shoot with my Canon AE-1. taking photos on manual exposure was somewhat of a pain in the ass for me, i’m not gonna lie. probably one of the reasons why i never took it out with me as much as i would’ve liked, in hindsight. and so deep into the drybox it shall now remain, until i decide what i will do with it next.

Hi Patrick, i am a big fan of your work. I love your portraits and your night shots. I have a question. When you shoot at night with normal street light which exposure time you are normally use in average and diafragma when you shoot for example with the fujichrome T64 film. I am really not confident in these kind of conditions! Cheers, Arnoud van Houwelingen
Thanks! Sorry for not answering sooner. The questions on tumblr have dropped significantly in the last year, so I haven’t been checking that much.
Anyway, just as with daytime shooting there isn’t one set exposure time that I use at night. There isn’t a Sunny 16 rule for night shooting. My exposures can vary from half a second to a couple of minutes or more, depending on the amount of light. I’m always recommending the Ultimate Exposure Computer to any photographer, but especially anyone who is trying to figure out the right exposure for nighttime scenes. If you haven’t done much shooting at night, I’d recommend trying to shoot with Portra 160 before you experiment with T64. C-41 film in general is a lot more forgiving. T64 is beautiful at night but also one of the toughest films to get right, that I’ve used. Reciprocity failure is definitely an issue. I find I have to expose longer than the equivalent Kodak 64T for instance.
In terms of diaphragm/aperture, that can vary too, but I usually have it set at f/4 or 5/6. I often like a somewhat shallower depth of field and, of course, it also cuts down on the amount of time needed to expose.
Hope this helps!

for my recent trip to Yamanashi, i bravely attempted to shoot exclusively on my Pentax 6x7 with Fuji Provia 100F slide film. due to the lack of photo labs that do E-6 processing in Kuala Lumpur, i’d never shot on slide film and processed them properly. that was, until earlier this year when i finally got my first taste of properly processing an expired roll of Fuji 64T in E-6. now that i knew of a photo lab that did E-6 processing, i figured that i’d give slide film a shot this time around.
to my dismay, the results didn’t seem to meet my expectations, especially when it came to the colours. i can’t say with certainty whether it was my camera, my crappy cellphone lightmeter, or even if the lighting conditions during the photowalks being far too contrasty, but it was apparent that a lot of my frames were not metered correctly. a colour tint pervades, and shadows were completely washed out for some underexposed frames. i suppose i could fix the colour tint on Photoshop, and for the most part, it fixes a good deal of my shots, but sometimes it isn’t quite enough and my pictures tend to look on the cooler side. however, some shots come out perfect, like the shot of the autumn foliage in this post.
it is rather obvious that i’m nowhere near fluent in slide film photography, granted that i’ve barely shot slide films proper. relying on Photoshop to fix my shortcomings somehow feels like i’m cheating, and it’s a stigma that i have a little bit of trouble navigating. perhaps i could’ve gotten myself a proper lightmeter, maybe worked on practicing with a couple of practice rolls before my trip. or maybe not shoot on slide film altogether.
but if there’s anything that i’ve learned from shooting on film, it’s that sometimes i’m just a little too hard on myself. it’s kind of weird how every time i receive my scans and skim through them, i find myself hating the photos. but when i find the time to sit down, fix the photos a little, and look at them in their updated forms, i would slowly find myself appreciating them a little more. it’s a strange process i go through most of the time - perhaps it’s one of those “Five Stages of Grief” processes that people go through, except with photos in my case. at the end of it, i find myself being okay with the resulting photos after all. i seem to go through this process a lot, and at times i wish that i am able to skip past this process and learn to love my photos for what they are.
is there a valuable lesson learned here from my foray into slide film? for starters, it ain’t cheap, to say the least. furthermore, i figured i could learn to slow down my photographing process and be more mindful of the light and surroundings before pressing the shutter button. lastly, perhaps it’s time to get myself a proper lightmeter. my cellphone’s simply not cut out for this shit, especially when dealing with a medium as brutal as slide film.
but the results speak for themselves. when done right, nothing quite compares with slide film.
