part of the Girl Boy universe
wordcount | 2.3K
content info | 18+ bc I say so, mostly just domestic fluff though
a/n | feeling kinda weepy and soft tonight and decided to share something from the archives - i have such a soft spot for these two it's criminal :')
................................................................
Everyone warned him about forty. Eddie passed the milestone first with a big dinner in the city, a toast that sounded more like a curse, you next, big boy. But Steve turned forty with little fret, no existential meltdown, no midlife crisis convertible, just a good day, sprinkle toast for breakfast made by his girls, and a little more sophisticated dinner that evening surrounded by good people, loved people.
Robin had a crisis when she turned forty this year, called him the night before her birthday in a verifiable panic because this is old, we’re old, when did that happen? He had scoffed, it’s not so bad on the other side, Rob, trust me. And he meant that, really, he did. But right now, waking up to forty-one, he feels a little less certain of the truth of that statement.
“Good morning.” Still sleep-sweet, her palm coming to rest over his heart, index finger skating back and forth along the line of his collarbone. For a moment, taking in her slow simpering smile, it occurs to him that they’ve spent nearly half of their birthdays together now, a strange, weepy heat blooming in his throat at the thought.
“Hi, honey.”
“You look perturbed.”
“Perturbed?”
“Mmm, and it’s too early in the morning to look perturbed. What’s wrong?” She sits up a little more, leaning into her arm, chin tilted down to consider him, a look he’s seen her give to the girls when they wake up complaining of headaches and sore throats. Only wearing a t-shirt from last year’s turkey trot fundraiser at the elementary school. He had cut the sides out of it for working out in, but he thinks a bit absently that this is a better use for it, the soft drop of her breasts spilling bare out of the cut-off sides. Even after all this time, she is still a perfect distraction to him.
“I’m forty-one today.”
“You are, I wasn’t sure if you wanted me to wish you happy birthday. You know, given the perturbed look.”
“Now we’re both forty-one.” Her smile falters, just a little, and he feels guilty, just a little, that he’s still in this fugue state. She recovers quick though, her palm rubbing a nice heat into his chest, leaning down and pressing a kiss to his cheek, another to his lips, beyond used to each other’s morning breath by now, not caring about it either.
“Yeah, we are, good thing we’re gonna live forever, right?” And it’s just enough to loosen something in his chest, to unfurrow his brow with a huff of a laugh, oh, are we? Guess I didn’t get that memo.
“Are you okay though, seriously?” He hums, his palm coming to rest over hers, and he is okay, tells her as much, and she softens, another kiss, another quiet happy birthday, baby. And there isn’t much more time to allow themselves because it’s a weekday, school day, routines to run through and all. Already out of bed, him putting on sweats and a t-shirt while she gets into the shower because he’s always been on wake up duty.
Violet is already dressed and brushing her teeth in the jack and jill bathroom she shares with Nora. Nine going on nineteen, she warbles a good morning around toothpaste foam when he squeezes her shoulder in a quiet greeting as he passes through to get to Nora’s room. And he is okay, he thinks, just feeling sentimental. A quick flood of it with the sudden obliterating thought that he blinked, and now they’re here. He still remembers when they brought Violet home to that little one-story in Amherst, still remembers when she fit in the span of his two palms. And now she’s putting on strawberry lip gloss in the mirror, and he’s not sure where she got that strawberry lip gloss, probably from that snitty Jessica H that neither he nor Andy like very much, though they’ve agreed to let Vi figure it out for herself.
Nora is still asleep, curled up small in her twin bed, pale blue light threading through the curtains and providing just enough guidance for him to not step on the legos strewn on the floor, mercy. Some mornings there’s no time for loveliness, for slow sweet things, everyone running a few minutes late, turning the lights on and calling out hoping it’ll be enough to wake whoever’s still sleeping up. But they can take a little more time this morning, so he sits down on the edge of her bed, a gentle palm between her shoulder blades, soft voice, hey, Nor, good morning. She murmurs, grumbles, small displeased sounds as she curls up tighter into herself. She is the most like Andy out of their girls, he thinks, a bit serious for her six years, but sharp. He’s greeted by her furrowed brow beneath the mussed tangle of her hair, eyes still half-shut and a pursed frown that he can’t help but chuckle at, which of course only makes her frown deepen.
“It’s time to get up, babe.” He says it, but he’s already softening back into something between asleep and awake as she crawls into his lap, arms wrapped around his neck and her hair getting in his mouth with the way she tucks her head down into his chest, another low grumble as she settles small in his lap. Soon, he thinks, she will be too cool for this, for him. It happened to Margot somewhere between eight and ten, Violet too, sometime last year, and Nora will turn seven in the fall. So soon, but for now, he rubs circles into the small wings of her shoulder blades and asks her to tell him about the fortress she seems to be building out of her legos. She blinks up at him, still a little bleary, it’s your birthday, though the words come out a little garbled, birthday becoming birfday, still young, still trying. He smiles, nods, asks her how she knows that and mommy said, and, happy birthday, daddy.
“How old are you?” He tells her and her jaw drops, eyes wide, young wonder, like she wasn’t there when he turned forty last year.
“That’s so old.”
“You know, mom is the same age as me.”
“Yeah, but she’s mom.” He doesn’t get a chance to ask her to explain the particular logic of her statement, already sliding off his lap and padding into the bathroom, a rather haughty daddy, privacy lobbed over her shoulder at him. She learned that word a few months ago, and it’s quickly become her favorite. He gets the hint, steps out through the door to her room and continues his rounds.
Knocking is requisite when entering Margot’s room, he’s learned. Sometimes she answers, sometimes she doesn’t. Something else he’s learning, how to be okay with it when she doesn’t answer, space, allowing that space that seems to continue to spread. But this time she does answer, a quiet yeah? And when he asks if he can come in, he gets a sure, and he’ll take it.
“What’s on deck this morning?”
“Jeff Buckley.”
“Grace?”
“Yeah.”
“Nice choice.” It was Andy’s idea, getting out all those old cassettes and getting Mar a walkman for her twelfth birthday. She’s been inseparable from her headphones ever since, though she’ll share with him from time to time, humor him from time to time. He sits down on the window seat in her room next to where she’s sunken into her bean bag chair, considers the tracklist on the cassette case she left there, like he doesn’t know this string of songs by sheer memory.
“Do you have a favorite off this one?”
“Mmm, last goodbye, probably.” She holds her head in her hand, chipped blue nail polish tapping against her cheek when she asks what his favorite is right back.
“Last goodbye is a good one, but when we saw him live the way he performed eternal life was pretty amazing.” And he knows, he knows, trying to rack up a few points by dropping that one into their conversation. Margot takes the bait, you never told me that, you saw him live? All eager, curled over her knees and waiting for him to continue this story.
“He was playing in New York all the time when mom was living there, we saw him at this little club. You sure I never told you that?” And Margot’s ugh, no, that’s so weird. He’s trying not to grin like a dork, and failing miserably.
“What’s so weird?”
“That, like, you and mom were cool.”
“Emphasis on the word were, huh?”
“I mean, you guys are relatively cooler than other parents, ish.”
“Ish?”
“Yeah, cool-ish.”
“Thanks, Mar, I appreciate the cool-ish.”
“Yeah, happy birthday, by the way.” And with little fanfare or fuss, she gets up and produces a small package wrapped in what looks like old, cut-up trader joe’s bags from the drawer of her nightstand.
He had been expecting a joint gift from the girls, something Andy usually organized, always thoughtful, accompanied by three homemade cards that he keeps tucked into a desk drawer at work. But no, not expecting this, unwrapping the gift while Margot looks on, something nervous, he thinks, in the way she’s rocking back and forth on her heels.
“Uncle Eddie helped, mom too, but, um, yeah.” No, not expecting this, an iPod, dark blue, and she explains to him in a rushed voice that she wanted to share her favorite music with him, because he’s shared all of his with her, and so she downloaded plenty of good stuff to get him started, she says, to get him with the times. And he knows that it would not be cool, or even cool-ish, to cry right now, so he tries hard not to, clears his throat and thanks her for his gift, tells her how much he loves it, and asks for a hug that he’s half-expecting her to balk at. Small miracle when she doesn’t, when she lets him pull her into his chest, quick squeeze. He lets her go before she’s too cool for him again, tells her mom has breakfast going, and they’ll need to leave soon, and all the usual things while his heart continues to melt and warm between his ribs. And that feeling lingers, lovely, while he gets dressed, slacks and shirt and he slides his gift into the pocket of his suit jacket because he’s looking forward to listening to it the very first chance he gets.
Breakfast is well under way by the time he comes down to the kitchen, oatmeal and peanut butter honey toast and scrambled eggs, and he catches the tail end of Andy telling Margot that she doesn’t care if Allison M is skipping breakfast these days because your brain needs fuel, babe, no ifs, ands, or buts, and you can tell Allison M that I said that.
Coffee for him, coffee for her, they pick at peanut butter toast crusts and the ends of bananas that none of the girls seem interested in eating, leaning at the kitchen counter and doing the usual family rundown, basketball practice and violin lessons and a sleepover this weekend, small chaos that they somehow manage. They’ll do cards and cake, and probably another errant gift or two tonight, he knows, just happy to be getting everyone out the door in matching socks and with packed lunches. He always drives Margot on his way to a quick enough commute into Boston while Andy drops Nora and Violet at the elementary school, closer to the university campus. But while the girls are already out the door and looking for that orange cat they’ve been leaving cans of tuna out for, Andy stops him at the garage door, brows raised, well? And he knows exactly what she’s asking about.
“Was it her idea?”
“All her idea, we just helped. Don’t tell her I told you this, but she was so excited, baby. Had a list written out of all the songs she wanted to put on it for you.” And now he thinks he might cry again, some strange swirl of existential something and love, loving, and being loved in such a complete way. All he can do, pull her in close, a kiss that slips across her mouth and to her cheek and we made really fucking good kids, and, thank you.
“I have a gift for you too, but it’s gonna have to wait until tonight.”
“Oh? Yeah? Tonight?” His grin going smarmy and sideways, a quick glance out into the yard to make sure there aren’t young eyes watching when he squeezes at a palmful of her ass, little shove, little scoff, and not meaning it at all when her own grin threatens at the corners of her lips.
“Better get your mind out of the gutter or you're gonna have a very long day ahead of you.”
“So would now be a bad time to tell you I kinda want a fourth?” Except it doesn’t come out quite like that, the last bit rushed all on one exhale, kindawannafourth? Andy is already rolling her eyes.
“Oh no, no, sorry, ship’s sailed, shop’s closed, not happening. Steve, I don’t know if you noticed, but you and I? We’re kinda old now, babe.”
“Thought you said we were gonna live forever.”
“You’re insane.” They’re going to be a few minutes late now, stopped staring and smiling at each other like fools. He presses another kiss to her lips, a quick smacking thing, just because he can, and then sighs, yeah, we are kinda old, honey.
“We can still have fun though.” He perks at that, her already slipping away and toward her car as all three girls start to grumble about the time. He follows, feet dragging just a little as Margot gets into the passenger seat of his car, another recent development, another change.
“Fun, huh?” Her sunglasses on, brow raised, Andy offers him one more smile before she gets into her car.
“See you tonight, birthday boy.”

Hannibal for the ask game you reblogged !!
hiiiiii!! hannibal, my beloved <3 thank you for asking!!
Give me a TV series and I'll tell you:
Favourite character: i need you to know this just prompted a heated 15 minute conversation between me and my roomie in which we decided that one needs to be squished like a stress ball and one needs to be slapped against the wall repeatedly like one of those sticky hands. anyway, we’ve settled on will, but hannibal was an extremely close second
Funniest character: i mean objectively zeller and price are the comic relief but honestly hannibal cracks me up
Best-looking character: i mean, has to be will. i feel for hannibal, being that close to anyone hugh dancy shaped would have me acting up as well (please note this was also extremely close between will and hannibal)
3 favourite ships: hannigram obviously. then jack and bella my beloveds 🥹 aaand ofc alana x margot
Least favourite character: mason. of course mason. let’s all kill mason (again)
Least favourite ship: bedelia and hannibal, no question. that was a sin and i’m glad will’s jealous ass ate her up (alana x will and alana x hannibal get honourable mentions as well. stop trying to make fetch heterosexuality happen)
Reason why I watch it: gay. GAY!!! also it’s, yknow. an excellent show with gorgeous visuals, an engaging plot line and endless symbolism. but mostly the gay
Why I started watching it: i actually think i was in a fugue state so i don’t fully remember?? but my feral friend fishka (say that 10 times fast) mentioned it at some point and so we suffered through months of trying to schedule group watches with 5 people in 5 different countries and now here we are, each decidedly more mentally ill than when we started

Hey Aim! 😊 I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the hell out of Haiku and I honestly let out a little squeak of joy when I saw it and read it. Great work as always. I also wanted to ask you what’s one pairing you want to explore next year, which work of yours have you reread the most, and which was your favorite pairing (or y'nno, top six to nine) that you wrote for this year for Ao3 wrapped? Hope you're having a great day! 😚
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. ^_^ I've never done a Reverse Big Bang before, so it was a different sort of prompt than I normally use and it was a fun new exploration!
19. What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?
Ooh. This is tough, because I honestly write pretty much whatever tickles my fancy without regard for whether other people will read it anyway, LOL. I'm excited to post more Stucky longfic (YEAR OF FINISHING WILL CONTINUE INTO 2023) and to finish and post the Steve/Joyce. I do really want to try writing Eddie Munson/Wednesday Addams, if I can brain up a plot for it. Right now the idea is just Good Vibes. I'm excited about a lot of the Femslash February pairings that I'm planning on for 2023, as well. But there isn't anything that necessarily sticks out to me like, "oh I wish that I felt like I could write X but I can't," because I just... do the thing, usually.
20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?
Of all time? I think Cinnafic, probably -- it's the oldest thing I have posted that I'm still actually quite proud of at least most of, and I just reread it this year so it's in my head. I think the District 4 story in that series in particular is what I've reread the most of my own stuff. If I do say so myself, the Vibes in that story are Immaculate.
Of things I've written THIS YEAR, Five Times Captain America Fucked A USO Girl & One Time Steve Rogers Got Fucked. I was in a writing fugue state while writing it so I didn't hyper-edit myself the whole time and make myself sick of it while writing, for a change. LOL
9. Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?
Oh man. I'm so bad at ranking pairings. I mean, I feel like I'd have to call myself a liar if I acted like anything other than Steve/Bucky were my OTP of the moment, but it's honestly kind of rare that I have a true One Pairing That I Like Best because I'm such a multishipper. I love writing Kate/Yelena. I love writing Gomez/Morticia, and I'm excited to write more Wednesday/Enid. I love writing just about any woman character/Velma Dinkley, hahaha. Dang who all did I even write for this year? I love Chrissy/Eddie :(((((((( my sweet doomed bbs. The pairings that I wrote the most this year are, in order, according to AO3:
Yelena/Kate
Steve/Bucky
Phryne/Jack
Booker/Nile
Joe/Nicky
Darcy/Wanda
Eddie/Chrissy
Katniss/Peeta
Gomez/Morticia
Andy/Quynh
But like, the pairing I wrote the most this year is still only 79/968 fics that I posted this year, so I've written A FUCKTON OF PAIRINGS.

All My Ships
(with some added context sometimes)
Claire Kincaid x Jack Mccoy (Law and Order), tbh this was the first relationship I saw that made me have butterflies and squealy feelings after something bad happened to me, and made me think about entering another relationship some day. They just had this chemistry and the looks they gave each other, i hate it was never officially confirmed expect maybe in like season 9, but tbh I've never watched past a bit of season 7 cause Claire was my OG, my fashion inspo, my raison d'être.
Sybil Crawley x Tom Branson (Downton Abbey), the way they killed her off, absolutely heartbreaking I've never managed to fully watch that episode again. They deserve to be happy in Ireland with all the babies they want and her career, with the perfect husband who backs her up whenever.
Hermione Granger x Fred Weasley (Harry Potter), I can't even remember why I started liking these two, it was so long ago probably came across a fanedit or a fic by accident. I just love the funny one and serious one matching, and finding that they're actually more similar than you think. But a PSA to everyone interested in this ship, writers sometimes don't say if Fred lives or dies in their fics and getting to the end thinking these sweet characters who love each other are going to get through this with the author being pretty unclear about the final battle only to be hit with "it's been two months since Fred's death" BOOOO!!!
JJ x Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds), specifically in fics where she doesn't get in a relationship with Will, or it doesn't get to the point where they have Henry, not a huge fan of the honorary uncle/aunt then becoming the kid's stepparent trope. I also don't like to watch the show much anymore bc I worked in that field and when it's real on your desk everyday, watching that mixed with the sappy family stuff (also garcia, not a fan) is not enjoyable anymore.
Ellie Bishop x Nick Torres (NCIS), thank god a lot of their episodes were after Abby left, no offense to Abby lovers but dear god she's pushing 50 at the end, act like it??? I think I'm just into hot people bantering with each other.
Keeley Jones x Jamie Tartt or Roy Kent (Ted Lasso), we only saw J&K together at the beginning when he was more of a prick, but the new and improved Jamie I think could be a good match bc they have similar personalities. I liked Roy and Keeley together, they were really different but a lot of what each other needed. I loved pretty much everybody in that show, except Nate. Nate can go fuck himself.
Emily Rhodes x Aaron Shore (Designated Survivor), ok maybe it is just workplace romances, these guys had some banter, on opposite sides of issues, but why did the writers decide nah we're just playing she's going with Seth, no real buildup on that.
In summary: Workplaces romances, or romances that occur when two people are forced to be in the same environment. I've never had an office fling, all the men were way older than me and in much higher positions, the few that weren't yeah no thanks, or like a summer camp forced encounter thing but I live vicariously through these people having to be professional in public and absolutely smitten in private and seeing it melt through. I'm also sucker for the guy loves her more and realizes before she does.
These aren't all the ships I've liked in my life. I was in middle school during this site's most infamous shipping thing, can you guys guess what I was reading on my phone after I was supposed to be asleep? Here's an abridged list of some of the ships I've liked over the past 10ish years doing this: Sherlock/John Watson, Destiel, Doctor(10)/Rose, Dan/Phil, and those are just the really big ones that made it through the preteen fugue state, I do get a mini heart attack every time someone in my day-to-day life mentions any of these expect doctor who.

Title: Superscript WC: 1100 Episode: Demons (4 x 06)
When it comes to the murder of Jack Sinclair—when it comes to all the wrangling over the nonsensical idea that there are ghosts in the world that require wrangling—what she is doing is perfectly sensible. She, as usual, is doing her job. What he is doing is . . . kind of extra, even for him. She wonders what that’s about.
She can only wonder about it part time. She does, after all, have a murder to solve. And not only is she clearly not going to get any useful help from him on that front, he has managed to turn one of her actual detectives to the dark side. Ryan, whom she suspects of getting a sizable under-the-table allowance from Dad for obsequious supporting roles played and annoying services rendered, has fully defected to Team Supernatural. Add to that—or subtract, rather—the time that Esposito is spending whining about little brother getting to play Ghost Hooky, and Team Rational is not operating at fully capacity.
And still, she siphons off a little focus to wonder why he’s so intent on horror movie explanations—and why she’s feeling a little sharp about that. The two go together, the way his mood and her mood so often do, don’t they?
These, at least, are all in good fun. or they’re mostly in good fun. He stays up all night writing a ghost story on the flip side of her murder board, and she rolls her eyes about it. She plays the decidedly not obsequious role of the Fun Police, as though she doesn’t find it endearing when he knows that he’s in for torture—he knows that there is a back-to-reality bitch slap in his near future—but he can’t contain his excitement.
This, she thinks, goes beyond that dynamic, though. She could write it off to just him and the time of year. She could take the fact of him staying up all night—alone, in the precinct—to be this year’s wandering through a graveyard in suspenders. But it seems like it might be a little extra.
For one thing, the shit gets real when it turns out that he’s drunk her coffee—and his coffee, and what? Did he wander into the street before dawn in some kind of fugue state to get them? Then it gets very real indeed when he fails to fulfill his sacred vow to make her a replacement coffee before he and his favorite son head off in the Mystery Machine to pointlessly interview the former tenants who were credulous enough to get scared off from the very unhaunted McLaren house.
That whole incident, she supposes, puts caffeine deprivation on the table as an explanation. It’s possible that there’s nothing extra here in reality, it just looks that way through the glare of her ocular headache. But that explanation doesn’t satisfy once she has finally bent the damnable cappuccino machine to her will.
He is not just stumbling into the bitch slap with his enthusiasm for the supernatural. He is courting the bitch slap. He is sassing her about being too busy solving her murder to follow-up on the lead his Ghost Hooky date with Ryan yielded and implying—actually implying—that he’d rather hop right back into the Mystery Machine than ride with her to take down a grifter of interest in the murder of their mountebank. He is showing up, unannounced, on her doorstep to spout jargon and smugly ask how her solo canvas under the Team Rational banner went.
It is all very definitely extra, so she turns around and puts a little extra in her own push back. She snickers about proton packs and makes him beg before she says it—I ain’t afraid of no ghosts. She shoots him the mother of all smug looks when Detective Smith wonders what kind of jackass would buy the demon storyline that Matt Benton apparently tried to sell. And even as she delivers shot after shot, she can’t help wondering why it is they’re pushing and pulling a little more forcefully than usual.
The demon storyline, much as she’s loath to admit it, knocks something loose for her. The demon storyline is where they—against all odds—intersect, she in her quest for mundane, completely off-this-world explanations, he with the ghost story he’s writing on the fly.
Matt Benton is—or was, as it turns out—a demon. They both have to look away from the photos of Melanie that tumble out of the domestic complaint file they dig up. They both find the floor in Pete Benton’s office suddenly fascinating as the man’s voice cracks and he doesn’t know whether to be relieved or horrified that his brother did not, as he has believed all these years, brutally murder the woman he himself had once loved.
Addison Smith is a demon. A man charged with protecting people—a man who had seen in the flesh what the two of them have to look away from in two infinitely removed dimensions—stands there snarling about everyone else’s guilt. He stands there in the middle of that hideous, patterned floor that has so recently been rendered all the more awful with the wild, violent spray of Jack Sinclair’s blood, and would have the world believe that everyone else is at fault.
It’s pure evil. It’s the devil’s handiwork they’re standing on now, they’ve been wandering through lately, from Brian Hayes, impaled on a sculpture, to the carelessly brutal disposal of Jane Herzfeld’s body, from Tyler Faris, split in two, to the Lester Hamilton-less pool of Lester Hamilton’s blood—it’s a lot.
It’s a lot on top of everything that isn’t a crime scene, isn’t a mystery to puzzle out, him leading with wild theories, her tugging them back to earth. It’s a lot, and this—his push and pull, his sass and her bitch slap—is how they cope together.
And in the end, she’ll take the finishing touches he puts on his ghost story. Matt Benton was a demon. Addison Smith is a demon. Those are facts from Team Rational and they suck badly enough that she’s willing to play Ghost Hooky. with him.
She’s willing to agree that Jack Sinclair very well might have nudged some things on this mortal plane to give them an assist when they most needed it. Jack Sinclair very well might have gotten something like justice for himself from beyond the grave.
Everything has sucked lately. Everything has extra sucked. So just this once, she’s Team Supernatural.
A/N: Racing against the lack of morphousness in my old, constantly crashing laptop at 4 AM. Like you do. There is no morphousness in this ghost story.

i only like pop music when I can choose to hear it.
if rock's on, I'm on board. even if nickelback or creed is playing and I fucking hate them both.
if metal's on, I'm on board, as long as it's metal and not grindcore or deathblast or djentfuck or whatever the fuck else 4chan is concocting in their parents' basements.
if r&b's on, and I mean real r&b and not just "cishet male literal sex predators are sad", I'm on board.
if jazz is on, I'm on board, and I'm not even the biggest fan of jazz.
if classical music is on, I'm on board- I'm just so goddamn sick of vivaldi's spring, beethoven's symphony number five, bach's toccatta and fugue, pachelbel's canon in D, and liszt's hungarian rhapsody. THEY HAVE OTHER SONGS, GUYS.
if opera is on, I'm on board, just as long as it's not just fucking one of three ave marias by andrea bocelli. there's more opera artists than bocelli and there's mores songs besides ave maria.
I think you can see where this is going.
if rap is on, I'm on board, as long as it's not just fucking Drake Drake Drake Drake Tyga Drake. they're not even good rappers ASIDE from being two steps from pedophiles. give me wu tang, tribe, roots, nwa, public enemy, kid cudi, wiz, biggie, tupac, outkast, kurupt, beasties, jay, bone thugs, busta, eminem, nas, nate, luda, cypress hill, childish gambino, tech 9, snoop, give me real rap with meaning, feeling, flow, cultural impact, bass, clever lyrics, RHYTHM.
if country is on, well, if it's pre-9/11 i'm on board but if it's post-9/11 then fucking kill me. because post-9/11 country music is glorified pop with subliminal fascist ultranationalism and commercializations for alcoholism and cars. except for lil nas x and probably a small handful of others I don't know or care to know because I don't give a fuck about country music.
if punk's on and it's real punk I'm on board but not if it's just nasally white boys crying over an ex girlfriend or ugly british men with bad hair because THATS NOT WHAT PUNK IS. black flag, bad religion, bad brains, jack off jill, ice t, cromags, poison idea, rancid, misfits, against me, nofx, even sum 41, green day, offspring, and four year strong have redeeming qualities. but plain white tees, all american rejects, all time low, mayday parade, ramones, sex pistols, simple plan those are just pop groups who play four chords kinda fast, maybe yell sometimes. and while I do like songs by these bands, they are essentially pop, not punk.
if grunge is on and I mean like alice in chains (not rooster) or soundgarden (not black hole sun) or nirvana (not literally half of nevermind) or stone temple pilots or mudhoney or mother love bone (oh yeah and pearl jam is there too but honestly pearl jam is overrated, mike and eddie were way better in mad season, temple, and all the other configurations) then I'm on board. even if it's A- tier grunge like pumpkins, bush, live, spacehog, screaming trees, melvins, silverchair, veruca salt, l7, meat puppets, blind melon, local h, which isn't AS good but it still quality music made outside of commercialized bullshit which is what grunge was created to ESCAPE FROM after england fucking ruined metal in the 80s with hairspray and leather taking precedence over the actual music itself.
wait look commercialization ruined metal and grunge and punk and r&b and rap and country. I wonder why that is-
The Fucking Pop Music Industrial Complex.
so, look. there's a lot of music I don't know. I couldn't tell you billy eyelash from lil rubber ducky. maybe they're amazing and maybe they're not. I'm not gonna talk shit about modern music or pop music or anything. my problem is I can't go anywhere without hearing katy perry or taylor swift or miley cyrus or any number of dumbass inbred white trash idiots, and they all have like 80 songs each on replay. drake and cardi b are the same way, without the inbred and white parts. but they're all still horrible people made worse by $$$. it's a huge circlejerk of millionaires sonically engineering the airwaves to brainwash the masses into the sweet sweet ad revenue from youtube spotify itunes etc. it's made as a product to recycle. "Your style's like garbage cans meant to be taken out on a weekly basis, ever since your first record you've been in a state of suspended animation." There's no artistic integrity in the same song made over and over again except oh this one's about someone breaking up with you over booze and this one's about someone you broke up with because they cheated. 😑
Now I like some music that was made to sell for a product. Backstreet Boys, Nsync, New Kids on the Block, Britney, etc. I like it now 30 years later. Because I can choose to listen to it on my own terms. But I have no control over the shit they play now that's constantly pumped into my ears. It's all the same goddamn drivel and come a decade we're not gonna remember any of it. You know how much terrible music there was in the 50s? The 60s? The 70s 80s 90s and 00s were so full of the worst garbage anyone could ever churn out. Billboard was stocked to the brim with terrible music that nobody recalls and we only remember a tiny portion of it. The top 500 of 1982 is horrible. Even good bands like The Cars had boring unlistenable shit. There was good stuff too like Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull and The Who and other bands THAT DIDNT SELL WELL AND WERE PERCEIVED AS FAILURES BY CRITICS IN 1982. It's always been that way. The popular shit is always bad and the good stuff subsists through the popularity to be remembered fondly. Why do you think the 80s are making a huge resurgence right now in meme culture? Because we know that Toto and Men At Work and A-Ha and Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears are actually good no matter how poorly they may have sold back then. But now, post-9/11 with American culture becoming what it is today, it got worse. So much worse. I watched it happen. There's no nostalgia filter here, music just sounds different at its core. The notes themselves affect my ears differently and actually cause pain nowadays. I use the same pair of earbuds and I can listen to stuff from earlier time periods just fine, even if I've never heard it before. But new music now? Either something's different with production and mixing or I just have auditory hallucination issues. Which I don't. I don't even have chronic tinnitus. Something is wrong. And looking at the fossil fuels industry, the software industry, the cinema industry, the automotive industry, the prison industry, politics, social media, and the economy, there's no possible way that everything is just a coincidence.
The things that make money benefit the ones getting that money and hurt everyone else. That includes music.
...
...
...
or maybe pop music just sucks.

tagged by @verecunda (thank you xx)
pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions. tag 10 (or however many) people.
1. jsamn 2. endeavour 3. luther 4. dickensian 5. barry
who is your favourite character in 2?
i absolutely adore peter jakes and i miss him with all my heart. the development of his character was just so beautifully done, and it was perfectly portrayed by jack laskey. there’s a peter jakes shaped hole in the series now :(
who is your least favourite character in 1?
so i know there’s lots of support for the gentleman in the fandom and, yeah, i get it because he’s fabulous and eccentric and a fairy and all that but like..... oh he’s just such a troublemaker i wish he’d stop.
what is your favourite episode of 4?
ohhh that last episode is pretty bloody good. nancy’s song. jaggers’ big speech to arthur. poor amelia. it’s a painful ep but it’s super satisfying.
what is your favourite season of 5?
well there’s only two to choose from - but of those i’d probably say one... but ronny/lily really pushes season 2 up.
who is your favourite couple in 3?
MARK AND ALICE ALRIGHT FIGHT ME.
who is your favourite couple in 2?
hmmhmhmmh i actually don’t really have ships for endeavour.... maybe like endeavour morse and stability.... endeavour morse and happiness.... endeavour morse and actually having a healthy lifestyle.
what is your favourite episode of 1?
ooof probably episode 3 because i love all that peninsulads action
what is your favourite episode of 5?
predictable choice but ronny/lily is just *mwah*
what is your favourite season of 2?
season one is pretty hard to beat imo especially because fugue is so BLOODY GOOD.
how long have you watched 1?
i was a bit late to the party - i think i started watching it around the spring/summer of 2016?? can’t quite remember but it was around about then.
how did you become interested in 3?
i literally just started watching it because i’ve been meaning to for a long time and, well, when in quarantine... just finished the first season today.
who is your favourite actor in 4?
john heffernan man of COURSE
which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?
jonathan strange and mr norrell forever and always
which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
atm jsamn wins but it won’t stay that way for long
if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
oof probably mr venus you know. just living his life. vibing.
would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?
i’d like to see john luther go against inspector bucket trying to solve jacob marley’s murder. i mean, bucket would win hands down but like.
pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple?
well i’d love to say childermass and lascelles but like that’s not strangely okay at all that’s more chaotic and unhealthy. so let’s say stephen and segundus. they’d be pretty solid.
overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?
barry is so well plotted it actually hurts.
which has better theme music, 2 or 4?
the dickensian theme gives me like man that SLAPS.
i tag: @literaetures @murraywalker @davinciae and like anyone else who sees this and wants to give it a go x

Section 8: Amalgamation of: Legion + Crazy Jane Real Name: Katherine “Kay” Haller Alias: See Below… Biography: Kay Haller is the illegitimate daughter of Dr. Xavier and Nyssa Haller (Gabrielle Haller + Nyssa Raatko). At age 5, Kay started getting molested by her stepfather, which resulted in Kay developing multiple personalities. Nyssa (and therefore Jane) is a descendant of the immortal villain Yao Mo's Tou (Mandarin + Ra's Al Ghul). Personalities and Powers: Kay Haller: shapeshifting, but only into the other personalities.
