And it’s not in a “the universe is using its divine power to keep us together because it’s rooting for us,” kinda way, but in the exact opposite of that. The universe is NOT rooting for them. The universe dislikes them. They’re soulmates In a “the universe actively has it out for us and we weren't supposed to met let alone exist together, but we're ignoring that and falling into each other anyways. We're bonded together on a spiritual level and the universe hates us for it but we don't care,” kinda way. Like how insane of you. How dare you write that. LIKE GUYS THEY ARE THE CHOSEN TWO AGAINST ALL ODDS. AGAINST THE UNIVERSES WISHES. Like why did they have to do that. They are never leaving my brain. Like did anyone see that post of like “fuck divine power keeping us together I chose my own soulmate” or something along those lines and LIKE. YEAHHH THATS THEM!!! THAT IS THEY!!!! AND THEN THEY GO AND JOKE ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION. THEY GO “funny haha,” and make little jokes and just…continue on with their day. Like don’t even with me right now.

Fic with the most hits (and also most kudos, most comments, most bookmarks, most words, ...) is Coexist, my Season 3 Buffy AU. Jenny Calendar survived Season 2, but not everyone did. Angel never got his soul back before Buffy sent him to hell. Now Buffy has a new Watcher, and she's brought another Slayer with her to Sunnydale.

I started writing this in late 2020 and posted the first chapter in February 2021. I wouldn't be finished for twenty-six months, twenty-seven chapters and about a quarter of a million words. It's easily the most popular thing I've ever written (just checking now, it doesn't just have the most hits of any fic I've published, it has the most hits of any Teen- or General-rated Fuffy fic published on AO3, which is wild), and I think it's probably the best, too. Will I ever write a sequel? Well, one day, maybe ...

Fic with the second most kudos is another Buffy AU, Last Year's Rain Didn't Fall Quite So Hard. Faith wakes up from her coma in the middle of Season 4, but she's forgotten everything that happened since before Allan Finch died.

I wrote this as part of a gift exchange at the end of 2023, and I think it's best read alongside @bodytoflame-ao3's trying to drown in the fountain of youth. Without meaning to, or really coordinating in any way, we ended up writing a pair of stories that explore some very similar ideas (we both even named our respective fics after songs about water).

Fic with the third most comments is Residuum, my long dormant -- I guess it's probably fair to say 'abandoned' at this point -- Mass Effect AU. How would the galaxy be different if, shortly after humanity finding the Charon mass relay and settling their first interstellar colonies, Earth had been cut off from the rest of galactic civilization?

I originally started posting this on fanfiction.net in 2018. It was the first fanfiction I'd ever written (as an adult, anyway), and in hindsight I was ludicrously optimistic about just how much I'd be able to write (I managed 19 chapters of a planned 67). I think I learned a lot by trying to write it but I just wasn't able to keep up the energy I needed and in hindsight I suspect I never would have been. (If anybody ever wants to message me and ask about it, I'd be more than happy to talk about where the story was going to go: I had a huge amount of notes and timelines and ideas and half-written chapter fragments and the plot was going to eventually bring together ideas and concepts from all three games of the original trilogy.)

Fic with the fourth most bookmarks is another Buffy one: Mixed Signals. Fuffy, again, to nobody's surprise.

This was originally written as a prompt-fill on Tumblr (the prompt was "I've got you"). I couldn't work out which season of the show I wanted to set it in, so I went with ... all of them?

Fic with the fifth most words is The Choice. Back to Mass Effect for this one. Two different takes on the end of the second game, as two different Shepards lead their crews on a last desperate assault on the Collector Base.

I think this was the first fanfiction I ever actually finished? A bit of a Sliding Doors style experiment on my part: one Shepard's story is told in the present tense and the other is simultaneously told in the past tense, and the two versions of her are dimly but not quite aware of one another (in the way one is always aware of choices we didn't make and lives we might have had as a result). Rereading it now for the first time in -- well, years, I assume -- I think it holds up okay.

Fic with the fewest words is the only real work in progress on this list: Take Me Somewhere Nice, another Buffy Season 3 AU, this time a Kendra & Faith story. To paraphrase the AO3 summary: "Kendra never dared to ask her Watcher what would happen when she died but, deep down, she'd hoped the world would be kind. That when whatever was going to happen had happened, when she'd fought her last fight, she'd open her eyes somewhere better.  But the world isn't kind. After Kendra died, she found herself in Boston."

Stalling quite a bit on this one at the moment -- only chapter published so far is from September -- but I'm excited to try to get back to it this month. I've talked on this blog previously about some Kendra headcanons and plot concepts, and I'm keen to actually try to explore some of them a little bit. (Think this should end up being about a dozen chapters long when completed, give or take.)

Tutorial for basic data on AO3 Top Ships

Earlier (while researching the BTVS Goncharov Index) I stumbled across the fact that Giles x Buffy is now #3 on the ship list for number of AO3 works! This is a change from before, the old top 5 in order were Spuffy, Spander, Bangel, Tillow, and Fuffy. I wanted to check the ranking of BTVS ships.

Ignoring the crossover effect (which is not too bad for BTVS ships), there is a very easy way to check what are the top ships on AO3. If you don't know how to do this, keep reading for simple directions and screenshots. I'll do another post with the Top 20+ ship results!

Pick your fandom on AO3, in this case "Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)." You want the screen that lists all the works. Today there are 38K works for BTVS (TV). It looks like this:

(The default is sorted by Date Updated. Don't get distracted from your research by the new-to-you fic! Research!)

2. On the right hand side, under the Include section, click on the triangle by Relationships to expand it. It will show the top 10 ships. Next to each ship in parenthesis is the number of works.

3. Let's say you are bored by the top 5 (or 10) and want to dig into the even more rare ships. This is when the Exclude section is helpful. The Exclude section is under the Include section. Scroll down to it, expand the Relationships. Now click on the X, it will turn red once you exclude that ship. In the image I've excluded the top 4. Once you are done, click on Sort and Filter back up at the top.

4. The number of works will drop dramatically. Excluding the top 10 ships I end up with 22K works. Repeat the second step to expand the Relationships. You will find a new batch of 10 ships!

If you want to dig in on AO3 data, Destination Toast has a detailed tutorial that gets into more advanced stuff. I highly recommend it!

If you have a burning interest in non-Buffy fandom stats, but don't want to do the work yourself, you could nicely ask phantom statistician for some results. (You may have to wait a while, there's a long list of requests.) There is already a lot posted, so perhaps your question is already answered there. (She can use both AO3 and FFN as data sources.)

Shout out to Phantom Statistician who created the original pie chart of top ships in BTVS back in 2020, which is how I knew what the previous top 5 ships were.

And I know I've said it before, but while using AO3 data is easy, it does not include all fanworks, or even all fanfic for BTVS. Since Buffy went off the air before AO3 started, lots of works are on other websites and/or lost.

Also Elysian Fields is a huge long-standing Spuffy-only fanfic site, so focusing only on AO3 undercounts the amount of Spuffy fanworks. Even with that undercounting, Spuffy is still the number one BTVS ship on AO3.

it's 2024 and Eliza's Faith Lehane is STILL the MVP!

so yeah, yet another Eliza Dushku appreciation post!

(I'm remaking this in 2024 to keep it positive. Felt like my last version of this got overly negative about a certain character and ship.)

Yes I am still not over the fact that Faith didn't have a last name until 2 years AFTER BTVS went off the air. She literally DID NOT HAVE A LAST NAME the whole time she was on the show. (Neither did Kendra BTW.)

In the literal dictionary sense: Faith is technically a minor character in terms of screen time. (Whaaaa???) She was in 20 episodes of BTVS and 6 of ATS. She was never listed in the main cast for either. She was not in the BTVS (or ATS) 20 year cast reunion.

We know Eliza played Faith as having a crush on Buffy. In cons Eliza consistently supported the idea of Fuffy (Faith x Buffy). If your view cuts off the right gif caption, it's Eliza saying "me and Buffy should've made out."

26 years after her debut, and people are still talking about Faith Lehane! There's gorgeous gifsets and insightful meta essays and brilliant shit posts and cute text posts and amazing webweaving poetry posts and even polls about Faith. And all the same for Fuffy! (I'm not even talking about the fanfic, even though new Faith and Fuffy fanfic is still getting posted.)

Faith and Fuffy are still inspiring people, even though the show has been off the air for 20+ years now!

So... also proud to be a part of FUFFY Nation. Sometimes I get a little choked up (like Buffy here) and sometimes I get impressed and thoughtful (like Faith here).

Send me an ask with a title that intrigues you from my list of wip's and I'll tell you something about it or post a snippet from it.

“What’s going on?” Faith questions the younger slayers.

“Willow’s new magical door locking system locked Buffy out,” one of them explains. This one looks only fifteen years old. It takes a moment before Faith remembers: Vanessa. Their name is Vanessa. There’s a smudge of dirt on their cheek and they’re clutching a stake in one fist, having just gotten back from supervised patrol.

“Huh,” Faith comments. “Any ideas why?”

The younger slayers all shake their heads.

Faith turns to face Buffy where she’s still standing in the doorway, waiting for someone to figure out a way to let her back in. “Have you been a bad girl, B?” Faith teases, then almost immediately wishes she hadn’t. This position they’ve found themselves in, with Faith inside Buffy’s home and Buffy locked out, feels a little too much like that night in Sunnydale when everyone kicked Buffy out and put Faith in charge. Buffy isn’t crying this time, but she still looks dejected, like a pet that’s been shut out in the rain. The corners of her mouth are turned down and one of her hands is up, palm out, pressing against the invisible barrier between them with a look of longing in her eyes.

But when Faith’s attempt at a joke lands, it actually has her originally intended effect. Buffy looks less sad and more like her usual self. Buffy teases her right back, bitchy and full of attitude, “There’s a way we could test if that’s the problem, F.” Faith fights a smile. There’s my girl.

I think it's the other way, tbh. like it just wasn't that gay on the air unless you were leaning in looking for gay subtext - which, of course, who wanted lesbian subtext who was not watching Buffy at the time - but basically everything they do was common for straight girls to do together on teen shows and soaps. it's just that, you know, all the femslash shippers were watching Buffy.

which made the ship extremely popular, and therefore extreme influential among young queer women and new femslash shippers alike. so when they went on to create their own art, and create intentionally queer relationships (either implicit or explicit), they modeled a lot of it on fuffy. which means everywhere you look in actual post-btvs wlw stories, there are references to fuffy, or references to references to fuffy, which many people may not even realize they're replicating, and of course many people don't even know the source material. but they do it!

so then, since the model of this is so prevalent and so recognizable from the other side, it looks like just another variant of it. but it is, in fact, the trope originator.

i actually would be so curious to know what some of the buffy the vampire slayer writers'/actors'/directors' influences were for the faith/buffy relationship because it really feels like everyone was on the same page about how those two are lesbo as fuck. and i think that is not always the case with queer subtext, particularly in a many-authored medium such as television. so i'm wondering if there were like, common references that everyone was drawing from or something. or were they all just clued in to the toxic yuri hivemind
