Hanno viaggiato nel mondo da soli e hanno lasciato un'impronta indelebile delle loro menti singolari e curiose. Fueguia 1833 nasce dal legame tra Europa e Sud America, stabilito secoli fa. Perpetrando la nostra tradizione, identifichiamo specie autoctone per progettare e creare fragranze tra Buenos Aires e Milano. Julian Bedel dà vita a Fueguia 1833 a Buenos Aires nel 2010 elaborando un concetto profondamente personale e inedito nel mondo della profumeria. L'Argentina, sua terra d'origine quale fondamento ispirativo, la Patagonia, territorio dominato da una natura fiera e selvaggia, come fulcro di esplorazione e scoperta per nuove sperimentazioni olfattive e, più ampiamente, un tributo all'arte, alla musica, alla vastità culturale del Sud America, sorgente inesauribile di stimoli per l'immaginazione e la creazione.

Julian è un po' esploratore e po' sciamano, un passato da liutaio, una genialità che si è fatta largo tra scienza e creatività, tanta mente e molto cuore, quella passione viscerale che porta a raggiungere l'obiettivo: un progetto dal respiro universale, che non appartiene solo al piacere dell'olfazione ma coinvolge tutti i sensi in un'esperienza multidimensionale, tra arte, cultura, sentimento e memoria.

Un Linneo 4.0 che lascia parlare la Natura col linguaggio aperto e trasversale dei suoi odori, autentici, familiari, confortanti, terapeutici. Perchè è stato un irresistibile richiamo. Perchè è un ricordo di serenità, la memoria di luoghi e persone che riaffiora, la poesia scritta e ritrovata nelle pagine di un libro, la fessura dalla quale spiavi il giardino all'alba, il foglio bianco da scarabocchiare con i pastelli di cera, il plenilunio di fine estate, i passi svelti e leggeri nel giardino di casa, la musica che non si scorda, un pianeta solo mio, un mondo senza algoritmi, un albero da abbracciare, un sorriso in ogni minuto e in ogni attimo qualcosa che vale e rimane. Perchè è il sandalo della vita, aroma che è sostegno, protezione e fermezza. Questo legno di sandalo espresso in purezza è l'emozione che cercavo, di bellezza rara e magnifica armonia. Un solinota delle meraviglie. Se lo stupore odorasse saprebbe di questa notte giovane, di un tesoro arboreo le cui radici profonde affondano nel terreno umido e vigoroso di un territorio munifico e inesplorato, di falò accesi sul mare, di sguardi complici verso l'orizzonte e pensieri morbidi, così morbidi da sprofondarcisi. L'azienda è attiva e responsabile di ogni fase operativa. Dalla costante e meticolosa ricerca di esclusivi ingredienti naturali, a concept, formulazione, produzione, ideazione ed esecuzione di confezioni artigianali e infine presentazione nelle proprie boutique.Formulazione e produzione fanno capo a Milano, all'interno di uno spazio che supera i 1.000 mq, qui Julian si occupa dello sviluppo delle formulazioni, una ricerca botanica costante tra piante aromatiche e medicinali, molte delle quali originarie della Patagonia e mai impiegate in profumeria, una palette selezionata di oltre 1200 ingredienti da armonizzare con sapienza e ricercatezza. Essenziale il supporto di tecnologie innovative in ambito macerazione, filtrazione, maturazione e imbottigliamento, sempre effettuate in loco con macchine e apparecchiature personalizzate secondo i desideri di Bedel e le specifiche esigenze di Fueguia1833.Nel 2016 è stata inaugurata la Fueguia Botany, una piantagione di ventuno ettari in Uruguay dove vengono coltivate più di cento piante aromatiche originarie del Sud America, in cui insiste un laboratorio attrezzato per l'estrazione 'verde' con la tecnologia fluido CO2 supercritico, che distilla ed estrae gli ingredienti a bassa temperatura in assenza di esano e altri solventi, nel maggiore rispetto per l'ambiente.

Importante sottolineare l'approccio alla sostenibilità, le formulazioni del marchio contengono ingredienti biodegradabili, muschio di origine vegetale, etanolo di origine organica, ingredienti esotici naturali le cui essenze subiscono lunghi processi di macerazione.Sono totalmente esenti da composti di muschio policiclico (PCM), filtri UV, conservanti sintetici, coloranti sintetici, ingredienti di origine animale, test su animali, ftalati.Alcune delle specie vegetali utilizzate nelle fragranze vengono coltivate e distillate dalle comunità locali, coinvolte in progetti che supportano la loro crescita e il loro sviluppo. Questo è possibile grazie alla collaborazione con HelpArgentina, l'organizzazione no-profit fondata nel 2002 da Bedel, per lo sviluppo sociale dei territori argentini. L'azienda utilizza solo fornitori che soddisfano gli elevati standard di sostenibilità, garantendo la tracciabilità di tutti gli ingredienti e la trasparenza per i consumatori. Le custodie in legno, packaging delle fragranze, sono realizzate a mano da studenti di falegnameria in Patagonia e nel laboratorio di Milano, utilizzando solo legname da alberi caduti in Patagonia. I flaconi in cristallo con incisioni sono riciclabili, la carta impiegata è senza acidi certificata FSC e l'inchiostro a base di soia. Una mappa della Patagonia, stampata su carta pergamena, completa il pack definendolo in eleganza e accuratezza di ogni dettaglio

A couple months ago, an acquaintance passed along a bottle of SMYTHE, the first fragrance from SMYTHE (pronounced sm-eye-th; to avoid confusion, every time I refer to the clothing brand, I’m going to bold it.)

SMYTHE is one of my favourite Canadian fashion designers. It  is best known for its sharply tailored blazers for women and bold, editorial pieces. In researching this review, I also learned its blazers are a favourite of a certain member of the royal family.

The nose behind SMYTHE is Julian Bedel, founder of the Argentinian niche house, Fueguia 1833. Hilariously, the company website spells both the name and year of Fueguia incorrectly as “Feuguia 1883.″ And this careless-to-the-point-of-insult mishap pretty much foreshadows the kind of scent we are going to get, priced at an exorbitant CA$275/50ml.

SMYTHE is described as “anchored in sandalwood with primary notes of cedarwood and patchouli and sub notes of clove bud and bergamot... made using globally sourced natural ingredients in small batch production quantity.”

What we have is a sad, heavy haze of a sandalwood scent. If I’m going to be charitable, there are shades of spice and nuttiness in SMYTHE if you go hunting for them, and there’s even an impression of a lovely richness in there if you can mentally delete the obnoxious musks which my skin seems to amplify. But at this price point, you’re far better off enjoying 75ml of the truly transcendent Santal Nabataea by Mona di Orio (€195 or CA$263 + shipping).

SMYTHE was described to me by the aforementioned acquaintance as a Santal 33 Le Labo dupe (of which I am not at all a fan). I’d say yes and no. If we eliminate the most interesting part of Santal 33 - the attractive, leathery opening that doesn’t last long enough before collapsing into an amorphous cloud of faux sandalwood and dense musks, the parallel is apt. I’ll also note here that the two also share very inflated pricing.

SMYTHE also reminds me more of other Fueguia scents. For those unfamiliar with the house, Fueguia launched with almost 100 releases set at eye-watering prices, each featuring minute variations of a handful of base themes (woody leather, amber leather, smoky leather). After you’ve smelled a few Fueguias, you’ve smelled them all. SMYTHE is no different.

I hate to write this review because I adore SMYTHE and I’ve sympathy points for anyone trying to work on something creative during a global pandemic (trying being the operative word in this sentence. OK, perhaps I’m not feeling sympathetic at all.). But I have to be honest: SMYTHE is a total disappointment. As it stands, there is pretty much no relation between SMYTHE’s self-assured editorial aesthetic and its namesake’s middling fluff. The only potential saving grace is that this scent is made in small, dated batches a la Le Labo and one retains the faint hope that the dated batch I received was subpar.

When I think of SMYTHE, I think of a contemporary look, pieces with daring and unexpected proportions that preserve a traditional spine. If you’re looking for something to wear with your SMYTHE blazer, may I recommend Malle’s Geranium Pour Monsieur instead? It’s a modern, crisp and colourful masculine-leaning scent that defies expectations while tipping its hat to the fougère that I think is a much better match.

"Like Marilyn's beloved elixir, Guerlain's L'Heure Bleue is another magical fragrance. I was 17 years old and making my theater debut at the Comédie-Française. I liked fine boutiques, so with my first money I went to Guerlain, at 68, avenue des Champs-Elysées, their mythical address. I remember first trying Vol de Nuit and Mitsouko, then Après l'Ondée (of which I kept a bottle) to adopt L'Heure Bleue. I wore it to play a few years later in L'histoire d'Adèle H. by François Truffaut. It followed me, it is a sensor of "moments" and a source of memories. It symbolizes my roles in the theater and is essential for my films in costume. It is a perfume that I rediscover all the time, I fall in love with it each time, without any feeling of use or wear, it is an absolute for me.

Her adrenaline triggers

"Between the ages of 25 and 30, I discovered Passion and Heure Exquise by Annick Goutal. By always wearing them together, without separating them, a crazy alchemy occurs, it is the love equation par excellence. Each time, it's amazing and ecstatic, as if I hadn't been looking for them but they had found me. It's amazing that fragrances like this exist and overwhelm me every time."

Her other self

"Aromatics Elixir by Clinique: I smelled it one day on a friend and it was a shock, something crazy, intimate and irrational. I like it when it's strong, it doesn't scare me. A bit like Tom Ford's Jardin Noir collection, right now it's Café Rose, a singular statement to the Damask rose, captured in its black-clad bottle. I wear them when I want to surprise myself, to have that feeling of an unusual other self. It's as powerful for me as changing my haircut."

Her eternal obsession

"Since I was a teenager, I have been fascinated by Eau Sauvage by Dior, my father's perfume. Although it is impossible for me to wear it, I have several secret weapons that bring me back to him, such as Escale à Portofino, still by Dior, Eaux 1, 2 and 3 by Sisley, and the very successful Jardins du Sud by Fouquet's. Some smells act on me like spells and confuse me without me being able to explain it. Whoever wears Dior Homme, for example, is bound to be irresistible!"

Her troublemakers

"I love layering scents. There was a time when I would stop by Comptoir Sud Pacifique and mix currant and vanilla, cocoa and grapefruit... I think I contributed to their inspiration! For the same reason, I have a thing for Jo Malone who has reinvented the art of combination. I am a fan of Blue Agava & Cacao and Jasmine & Mint. I love that incongruous side of the mix, I love that people are a little confused about how I perfume myself and wonder what I'm wearing."

Her mystical trips

"I had a long period of Angel by Thierry Mugler, an incredible fragrance where sugar was treated in a new way, and another under the seal of Serge Lutens, especially for his Daim Blond and his Rahät Loukoum, a concentrate of sweetness. His creations intoxicated me, they are like mystical ointments that come from afar. I often go to Jovoy, a store where everything makes me dream, and I found Misiones de Fueguia 1833. Beyond the incense scent that I look for everywhere, there is the refined bottle, the wooden box... A pleasure found for more than ten years at Frédéric Malle, I have a soft spot for his Lipstick Rose, a delicious interpretation of the powdery smell of a lipstick.

Her recent conquests

"I wear my perfumes in cycles but I keep them all in very strong cases where nothing breaks, I don't throw anything away. Always on the lookout for a new olfactory coup de foudre, I'm like a little girl in the luxury boutiques. In the duty free shops, I try absolutely everything I don't know on my skin and when I get on the plane, it's all over! I read all the articles on perfumes and I do some scouting. I recognize myself in the world of Terry de Gunzburg and particularly in his Ombre Mercure, but also in Diptyque's Eau Duelle which echoes my preferences. I don't understand women who don't wear perfume, it's impossible for me and it depresses me for them!"
