which was the most brutal tone-shift? ex-aid's christmas or this?

i know if this was a poll among fans ex-aid would win in a landslide but i think gotchard's is far more effective. ex-aid ruining christmas felt so incredibly cheap and a little too mean-spirited in how it set itself up as "just" a silly holiday special to begin with before pulling the rug out from under you. pure shock value that didn't actually lead anywhere interesting (imo) and only accomplished erasing the show's best character for 20+ episodes

gotchard on the other hand fully commits to its tone throughout the entire episode, and feels like it's truly upped the stakes going forward and opened the door for hotaro to grow into a more mature and self-assured hero, which is immediately compelling. and good god was dread absolutely clobbering that little guy. kiriya "dying" might be more brutal on the surface, but it was genuinely unnerving to see our young, bright-eyed protag get beaten so ruthlessly. makeup department did a really solid job on his face injuries too, especially in comparison to other shows (even amazons couldn't get jin's facial scarring right in the s1 finale), which only added to that feeling of, uh, dread.

So, considering the vitality-draining effects of turning into Kamen Rider Dread, I wonder about the melancholic transcourse of Sabimaru's life as he (in a similar vein as Hiromi) might age faster than his friends. From his initial attempts to hide the sympthoms, to the tragic reveal of his condition, up until the later stages of his life and friendship with Renge and the rest.

I think it remains to be seen how much effect the Dreadriver has in the long term, but Sabimaru hasn't really shown any other symptoms of being affected by it in a while. Like the gif above was from the episode immediately after he was recovered iirc, so obviously he'd still be affected by the experience, but in the more recent episodes he seems to be going about his life just fine.

Unlike Hiromi, who was shown having symptoms for a longer period, even after he stopped being a Kamen Rider.

Another thing to note is that Sabimaru hasn't been the only one using the Dreadriver. Both Lachesis and Clotho have used the Driver without showing symptoms for prolonged periods.

Obviously that means Atropos has subsequently adjusted it after Sabimaru was freed from their control, but it may also mean the Dreadriver was not intended to kill its user. After all, in all likelihood the Abyssalis Sisters created the Driver as a way to counter Gotchard. Maybe even as a precursor to something Geryon himself would use. And they can't exactly kill themselves or their master now can they?

Perhaps the only difference where Sabimaru was concerned is that the unrefined state of the Driver drew out enough energy from him to leave him near death, especially since he wasn't particularly powerful to begin with. And it wasn't like the Sisters were going to do anything to help him, so his condition didn't improve until Houtaro freed him from their control.

Most recently, we've seen Minato use it with no issues whatsoever. And as he says, there's quite a wide gap between him and the students (and Spanner) experience-wise. He didn't even seem winded by using the Dreadriver. While it could most certainly be that the Driver is just more refined now, it's also possible that Minato being a more powerful alchemist to begin with meant that he doesn't get affected as much as a less powerful student would be.

I dunno if somebody answered to your question before me, but the "my ultimate power is friendship" meme is from a crossover of (more than) two shows; the pirate in red is from a show named Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger and the pompadour school boy is from another show named Kamen Rider Fourze. I strongly reccomend you to watch them, tokusatsu shows are hidden gems that you shouldn't miss.

hey there! i know it's way too early to say this, but... any guesses of Zero-One's plot/themes?

Hey!

Nah, it’s never too early for musing about future Kamen Riders. ^^ And, actually, precedent indicates we’ll probably be getting some kind of catalogue release at some point this month, so hopefully, we’ll have more solid information soon.

As for themes, the rumours that have been circulating are that it’s some sort of ‘corporate espionage’ thing, where different companies have designated ‘Riders’ that they send to collect info on other companies—or protect from them, as the case may be. Other rumours were that the ‘transformation item’ is some kind of ‘electrical chip,’ or a ‘business card’ of some kind? Additional rumours regarding appearance, generally including yellow, and a return to the more ‘insect-like’ styles of some older Riders, has been going around, too, and also one alleging there will be three Riders starting out, with the other two having ‘animal’ themes, and some possible basic appearances for them.

Of course, all these rumours are completely unconfirmed, and should be taken w/ a large amount of salt, but they are interesting to think about, and there could very well be some truth to them.

In my opinion, most of the premise and the ‘item’ rumours seem pretty believable—and though I’m more hesitant to buy the rumours about appearance and am uncertain about the claim there will be three Riders, those are still interesting, and there are some parts that seem to persist amongst the majority of the rumours; one I’ve see a lot is that some part of Zero-One’s suit has yellow in some way, and the more ‘insect’ style.

As for me, the name ‘Zero-One’ makes me think of binary (might be why I’m rather inclined to believe the ‘electrical/computer chip’ rumour). It’s also possibly both a reference to the very first Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider Ichigo (literally Kamen Rider Number One), and a pun on the new era name (Zero can be written as ‘Rei,’ resulting in ‘Rei-one,’ which sounds a little like ‘Rei-wan’). And while animal and insect themes don’t really fit into a ‘business’ or ‘electrical’ theme… Well, neither do games fit into medicine. XD That’s one of the things about KR, anything’s possible. Could also be that all the rumours are wrong or misinterpreting the information.

So what we have right now seems to indicate that it might be a business theme w/ an animal motif of some kind. I’m afraid I’ve got no clue what the plot itself might be, as KR is known for some pretty wild ideas, so it’s kinda difficult to predict, but I am intrigued by what we know so far. Curious to see how much is accurate, and where they’ll go w/ whatever it is they do.
