Y’all, as someone who lives una country that doesn’t see the fuckingg sun for MONTHS. I’ve been wearing wool for months and months out of the year since I was a baby. Lemme tell you what happened when I didn’t:

Once I was gonna be a Cool Teen (I was 14) while in the stable. It was -22°C and I took of my knitted wool mittens, made for horseback riding purposes. And as I was fastening the head pierce thing on the horse my fingers got so cold I managed to get frostbite in my fingers.

But that was just no hand covering. “Why didn’t you just wear ~*vegan ethical*~ gloves?” I hear you ask. Ok let’s take another scenario bc I have the same thing in my toes.

Me being a Cool Teen (13 yo). It was mid winter and I decided to wear some not so winter appropriate shoes. Not sneakers but definitely not boots. They were cute tho, but I was cold so I thought layering up would help. I’d heard some with wool hurting sheep so I didn’t wear the knitted socks my great grandma had given me for my birthday. I layered up on cotton socks. I sweat bc I’m human and my feet freeze and I get MORE FROSTBITE.

Not to speak of the great traditions of the Sami people using reindeer skin for all sorts of things. And again, northern Norway is above the Arctic circle and gets fuckcold. And while we’re on traditional clothing and practices. BUNAD! It’s a traditional Norwegian dress (or suit) and a lot of them are made of WOOL.

You’re an idiot if you think I should throw away something so time consuming and expensive as a hand embroided bunad that’s been in the family for 2 fucking centuries in favor of a cheap synthetic one bc your ethics are itchy.

I understand why people dislike leather and animal products. But leather is such a good resource? Like… My mom bought a sturdy leather coat in 1989. I’m in my 20’s and I now wear that coat. That’s a 30 year old coat? 30 years, two generations, one coat. Versus, like… A plastic one, that rips and gets thrown out, or releases bits into the ecosystem every time it’s washed, takes a billion years to decompose, lasts maybe a decade if you’re super duper careful, and uses oil products in it’s construction. Like, yeah leather is expensive and comes from a living animal, and I’m not saying that you should go out and buy fifty fur and leather products for the he’ll of it, but like… Maybe the compromise is worth it? One animal product, valued and respected and worn down for generations, versus like… Six plastic products that will never ever go away?
