New editions of legendary works by British author Roald Dahl are being edited to remove words that could be deemed offensive to some readers, according to the late writer's company.
British newspaper The Telegraph first reported that the publisher of Dahl's books, Puffin, made hundreds of changes to original texts of the author's well-known children's books.
The character Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is no longer called "fat." Instead he is described as "enormous," The Telegraph reports.
Instead of being called "small men," Oompa-Loompas are now "small people," the article says.
Further, the changes to these books include adding language not originally written by Dahl. In his 1983 book The Witches, he writes that witches are bald beneath their wigs. According to The Telegraph, an added line in new editions says, "There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that."
The Roald Dahl Story Company told The Associated Press that it worked with Puffin to review the books out of a desire to ensure "Dahl's wonderful stories and characters continue to be enjoyed by all children today." The company said it worked with Inclusive Minds, an organization that works for inclusivity in children's books. Changes were "small and carefully considered," the company told the AP.
The changes have drawn criticism from advocacy groups, readers and writers.
Suzanne Nossel, CEO of the free expression advocacy group PEN America, called the changes alarming.
"Amidst fierce battles against book bans and strictures on what can be taught and read, selective editing to make works of literature conform to particular sensibilities could represent a dangerous new weapon," Nossel tweeted. "Those who might cheer specific edits to Dahl's work should consider how the power to rewrite books might be used in the hands of those who do not share their values and sensibilities.”
This is totally unacceptable. They are literally rewriting books now. If books have to be rewritten to conform to modern day sensitivities that will result in books being rewritten every few years by those who control the narrative.
There is nothing offensive in Roald Dahl’s books and if you see the word “fat” or “men” or a sentence about women in wigs being witches and you get offended then you deserve to be offended. Toughen up. You’ll never make it in the real world.
I predict this is only just the beginning, though. They are making “small” changes to start and see what they can get away with. Next time the changes won’t be so small.
If they can rewrite books they can literally rewrite history

randomly looked at this account to update my age and holy shit it's been a while since i posted here..........i have a small pile of art i have yet to post but hbhbshdbshbd too lazy
#part of it is that i haven't posted any of my recent art but in addition#i haven't made new art in a WHILE (abt 3 months) which is highly unusual for me but the reason for that is#3 months ago i suddenly remembered that i tried learning mandarin for three (3) days before forgetting about it for 9 months#(amusingly the reason why is not because of danmei......i did not even know danmei existed when i first decided to learn it)#anyways i have been insanely fixated on learning it for the past 3 months#however since art is primarily a way for me to process my interests and that only really be done when i'm fixated on media........well#let's just say i have not been making art at all#that might change soon tho#rn i'm reading 撒野 (saye) in chinese bc it's at a level i can read and i fucking love it so far#idk why i picked a book longer than svsss (which took me a week to read in english)...u would think there's no chance of me finishing it#or even reading it#especially when the only novel i've read before this is a chinese translation of the fucking magic finger by roald dahl LMFAO#but it's been a week and i'm a fifth of the way into it which i was not expecting at all#it was initially an exercise of “i will get as far as i can and try my best to read a chapter a day” but i've been zipping through chapters#last night i was up until 3 AM reading it and i was so tempted to read more but had to stop myself#of course this is all aided by pleco which lets me quickly look up words that i don't know yet. pleco ily#that being said...this all does mean i know words like 收銀台 before i even know the word for “orange” (the color) which is pretty funny#but idk considering that the sum of my time spent learning chinese is just 3 months..........i think i am doing pretty damn good#i thought it would be a LOT longer before i could finally start enjoying some interesting things#god but it really has been a while since i last read a high school romance...but i am quite fond of the leads and their respective baggage#sorry for the whole tag ramble.........i haven't really had anyone to talk abt this stuff with#oh also it's my birthday#that is why i am even here to update my age in the first place#happy lan wangji birthday#actually the only reason i realized it was gonna be my birthday soon is because i saw chinese artists posting lan wangji birthday fanart#and then remembered that we share the same birthday#also re: the art i haven't posted yet.........a good chunk of it is misvil fanart...song qingshi my beloved#and there's also a luo binghe drawn on an art app i PROGRAMMED MYSELF (!!!!!!!!!) in there#actually that piece is the main reason i haven't posted the art i HAVE made. how the fuck do i explain that i drew it on an app that i made#sorry this is genuinely the most off the rails tag ramble i've ever done. okay i'm done

Fuck Book Banning in 2024
Sorry, no eloquence today. Just frustration and anger.
While planning some reading for the coming year, I was reminded again of all the book banning that has happened recently. Some of my favorites . . . .
James and the Giant Peach (Roald Dahl) - My father read this to me as a child, I read it to him as he was dying. A story of a boy and some overly large insects that go on adventures inside a giant peach. Banned for including a vulgar word, having a mystical element, and for advocating communism.
Sandman (Neil Gaiman) - The comics that helped define many of the [interesting] people in my generation. A dark and brooding tale that follows Morpheus Lord of Dreams through various stories. Banned for anti-family themes and offensive language.
Beloved (Toni Morrison) - A book that made me think hard about family, history, and pain when I was in college. A beautiful soft soft soft ghost story about a (not) coping family of formerly enslaved people. Banned for obscene content.
Maus (Art Spiegelman) - An unbelievably important graphic novel in my family used to discuss with my older children the unbelievably impossible horror of the Holocaust. Banned for depicting profanity, nudity, and violence.
Lost Girls (Alan Moore) - A graphic novel that made me reconsider victimization, womanhood, and storytelling. A darker than dark retelling of some of fantasy’s favorite women. Banned for very explicit sex content and violence.
In 2024 - go find one of YOUR favorites on the list of banned books, get angry, buy the book, and read it again (or gift it to someone else to read).
Also, here are some resources if you want other ways to fight book banning in the United States.

With all the talk about AI writing and art stealing jobs and stuff, I would like to remind everyone that Roald Dahl wrote a short story about a machine which could write a story which is practically identical to AI and how it stole writers' jobs
And the story ends with something along the lines of, 'I'm the last one left. I can't feed my kids. Please buy my stories'

Did u know that Netflix has hired Greta Gerwig to direct 2 Narnia movies for their entire Narnia reboot extravaganza?
I DID NOT KNOW THAT!!! if they're just going to remake The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe + Prince Caspian, I'd rather they just leave it alone. Those movies are already perfect. Plus I feel like so many modern big budget movies are so like....slick and ~aesthetic~ but devoid of any and all meaning. Barbie was a perfect example of this: it looked very nice and had a lot of famous people involved and they put a lot of effort into it, but none of it MEANT anything.
However if they want to make a movie out of The Magician's Nephew or The Silver Chair I take back ALL OF MY CRITICISMS!!! GIVE ME MY WORST GIRL, JADIS!!! GIVE ME SHITHEAD CHILDREN WHO FUCK UP AT EVERY STEP!!!
#asks#HONESTLY I was a victim of the 'not in the same household' netflix thing#so I don't have netflix anymore#so I haven't heard anything#I'M CURIOUS THO#I know they just made some roald dahl shorts which is DOPE#I fucking love roald dahl#but I can't bring myself to pay netflix money ajsdflkdsjfkl

say what you will about roald dahl, but his enduring success as a children’s author really only proves to me that children are super dark and that all kids shows need a little bit of ‘what the fuck’ in them to be truly good
#watched the end of matilda bc it was on tv and I was like my god this is horrifying#but as a kid I loved it!! and I loved the book!!#no one will ever be able to take away my love of roald dahl that man was a literary genius tbh#he really seemed to get kids and how fucked they are (in a good way)
