To be fair re: Voyager, a lot of the questions it poses on are less “what’s the most ethical option in this scenario?” and more “what ethically dubious actions will people justify for their own survival?”

I think that interpretation could work BUT they don’t portray the crew as ethically dubious. They portray them as upstanding starfleet officers (even the ones who were maquis).

I think the writers and actors had lots of ideas that could have been cooler than the end product. Rick Berman was a huge issue they couldn’t do them! And the politics of the show are a lot more regressive (in my mind) than other Star Trek.

They had a lot of opportunities to do cool shit and missed so many of them. Kate Mulgrew is an incredibly charismatic actress and they tied both hands behind her back.

I like Tom too but he’s so clearly a major contributor to B’Elanna’s internalized racism that it makes their scenes together difficult to watch 😭

It’s really been something that jumped out to me when I rewatched as an adult -

I think I’ll always like their relationship for the begrudging friends-to-lovers timeline that I loved so much as a kid. BUT watching scenes where he tries to ‘help’ her with her Klingon heritage and just comes off tone deaf is so hard

It’s one of those things where you can tell that the writers thought they’d hit on something great but just didn’t understand what they were trying to talk about enough.

Voyager suffers from this so much and it’s a shame, because I think it might have been nice to see them have a properly developed arc where Tom has to confront the fact that whether he means to or not he’s worsening things for B’elanna and that he needs to change the way he thinks about Klingon culture for the sake of his wife and daughter

Just watched Star Trek DS9 "Tears of the Prophets". There are many ways to write Jadzia off the series (see reassigning her to the Enterprise) and turn her into a recurring guest star, but nope, Berman wrote her off in the worse way possible. I finally get the Rick Berman hate.

In real life I know that seven of 9 was wearing super tight clothes cos Rick Berman is a freak and a creep, but i like to think that in voyager the reason she wears those catsuits is because shes used to having all her clothes welded to her skin or whatever as a borg so the normal uniform gave her sensory issues so she asked them to just give her the tightest clothes possible to compensate and they were like uhhhh sure

I’ve heard that something similar happened with Terry Farrel after *spoilers ahead for a show that ended in 1999* Jadzia Dax dies in the sixth season and is replaced by Ezri Dax.

The final episode has a montage of memories with all the characters, but they can only show Ezri Dax instead of the six seasons worth of memories showcasing the fantastic and wonderful Jadzia Dax.

Rick Berman, the worst guy, sexually harassed Farrel for years. When she asked to be moved to a recurring actor instead of main cast (just as Colm Meaney did), Berman killed her character off brutally.

Her agent or manager was asked if they could use footage of her in the final episode. The representative said no, citing Farrel’s refusal.

She wasn’t even asked! She would have said yes.

my problem with trek shows atm is that they all take themselves so seriously. there is so much pathos and everything is heavy and dead serious. its actually exhausting.

the older shows up to enterprise all used star trek as a backdrop, but it really wasnt about that. it was about the characters, the stories, the subjects at hand, and things being okay at the end of the day. the lore was just a second thought. most of the episodes could have happened in any genre.

they were also way lighter in tone most of the time, it was enjoyable to watch, and then they still had fucking dark episodes that didnt have a happy ending and that were super heavy, and had important messages and those were important and really stood out. i still cry when i think about jadzia dax and lenara karn. or entire arcs like the dominion war in ds9 that were amazing.

but in the new shows it feels like every episode is one of those, and it cheapens their overall impact so much. it no longer feels like theyre bringing attention to important things, it just drags on the negativity. and so often they make it about star trek and not something important in the real world and thats just not the point.

the only exception is lower decks, and for some reason its not getting renewed past this season. idk man i just miss my 80s/90s/2000s era trek vibes. those shows were amazing and we could do that but dial the sexism down and the queerness up by like 500%. instead we have movie bars and dutch angles and ten episodes per season and more special effects in one pixel than in the entirety of the jj abrams trilogy. yay.
