Was a camp counselor (unpaid babysitter) at a very white, religious summer camp last month. I'm not religious anymore, but my younger, also gay friends were going for the first time (they're agnostic and not out to their religious families yet) and there were speedboats, which I love.

I live in a less than diverse area, and the LDS church was hosting the camp, so I'm sure you can imagine just how white the crowd was. Not a single POC in sight out of like 80 people. I bring this up because one of the eleven year olds I was in charge of proudly talked about how her nickname was "cracker" which prompted the other youth leaders my age to freak out. Someone from my town who I see weekly was like "oh no, I hope she's not getting bullied at school, it sounds like there's black kids that have been calling her slurs :(("

And of course I can't tell this sheltered Mormon to grow the fuck up (even if I'm openly an atheist, I've got a nice, caring girl reputation to uphold) so I just had to settle for telling her that the kid probably gave herself that nickname, and every kid goes through a phase were they try to convince other people to call them by their favorite food, but wanting to make it look like someone else nicknamed them. I really wanted to be chicken nugget for a month when I was ten, and I was super upset when it didn't catch on.

Anyway, the other glorified babysitter was like "what? I don't know any kids who did that. Anyway that poor girl, she doesn't even know they're being mean to her :(((("

Guess which sheltered teens discovered through trying to subtly question the girl that her favorite food was in fact crackers, and that no one actually called her that unless she asked them to.

i dont mind religions but the catholic one is a different story, i strongly dislike the hardcore believers that dont understand how i can not believe, and my history teacher is a hardcore one herself, its one thing to have a cross and just go to church or whatever but like please can you stop saying the god pointed his finger at our nation and thats why we won the battle or war, i cant write that on final exams

The other thing about discussing harmful things about the christian church and getting "that's not what that verse really means/that's not how that doctrine should be applied/that's not actually supported biblically/etc" back is that... at a certain point it doesn't matter. Yes there are varying beliefs within christianity (understatement with 45,000 different denominations lmao), but you don't get to claim that christianity is separate from any harmful beliefs when a lot of harmful beliefs are the majority.

You can say "the bible wasn't ever talking about gay relationships in [xyz] verses" but that doesn't make the average church actually safe and affirming for queer people. You can say "actually hell doesn't have any biblical backing" but that doesn't mean very much when like 75-80% of christians believe in hell. You can say "men and women are equal in the eyes of the Lord" but it doesn't erase the rampant misogyny in christian culture.

If the members make up the church, if members are the church, then at a certain point the cultural beliefs or majority beliefs have precedence over what was intended. You can't say "oh just ignore [belief/doctrine/interpretation/etc]" when that would be dismissing the church's most predominant collective beliefs. You don't get to just disregard harm because that "wasn't the intention". You don't get to look at the result of said harm and decide it doesn't matter because it makes you look bad.

maybe you’re not religious, maybe you only sometimes show up on sundays. it’ll feel like a rarity to him. like you’re an angel blessing him with your presence. he constantly extends every conversation so you won’t leave. and you’re completely unaware of the effect you have on him, only thinking about how the priest at the local church is extremely friendly every time you make a visit.
