DC's Stargirl 3.13 "Chapter Thirteen: The Reckoning" has aired on the CW and I'm here to talk about it.

This is it. Series finale. We've had three wonderful seasons of this show that were split between two different networks, one of which doesn't exist anymore. I can't wait to see how this all ends. I'm hoping we'll get a kind of epilogue scene or something to give us an idea of what's next.

The way Jordan is using Starman, in reality Ultra-Star as I call him now, in his old plot from season 1 almost makes that plan better. Almost. It was still a really dumb plan. But also holy shit, they're actually showing us this?? And as he was truly dying, all Starman could do is call for Pat?? I'm crying.

So the JSA isn't putting together that Ultra-Star is Ultra-Star, but they have realized that he's not who he says he is and that he's been manipulating them the whole time. I like when this show lets them be smart.

Jordan further manipulating Cameron against Courtney and the JSA. And I like how Grandpa Mahkent is still at least kind of on Cameron's side in all this. I do still buy that Grandpa did want to put all this blood feud shit behind them all. But obviously, Jordan isn't to let that happen.

Pat's alive!!! I'm not surprised they didn't actually kill him (especially by burying him alive, that's so dark for this show), partially because we just got this big speech from Courtney about how Pat's her dad and she's so fucking thankful for that. Now, they still might kill him, but I'm betting that they won't.

Here we are, all the way back to the junkyard. We've seen this place quite a few times. Awe, Barbara is going to find Artemis so she can get her vengeance. That's sweet. I love how we only ever see S.T.R.I.P.E. in the season finales.

Okay, there's not gonna be a lot of commentary for the fight. It's hard to do. We'll check in at the big moments.

Grandpa taking a stand!! Good for him. And Grandma got crushed by a car that she shot down! That's what I call comeuppance. Jakeem finally gets how the thunderbolt works. Barbara to the rescue! Cameron joining the side of good.

Fuck yes Courtney! This has been an awesome arc for her, I'm so fucking happy to see her get this moment. She's struggled with feeling worthy, feeling like she was enough for the Staff, for anybody. Not just through this season but over the course of the entire show. And now, she's not just finally accepting that she is. She's choosing it. So much of Stargirl has been about choice. About what legacies we choose to continue, who we honor, and how. For one of, if not really the first time, Courtney is choosing herself. She's choosing to honor what she made.

You know, getting the fuck out of Blue Valley is probably what's best for Cameron. I just wish we'd get the chance to see what he chooses to do next. Personally, I'm hoping that he really does become an artist with his powers. Cameron Mahkent could do something truly beautiful.

All of these confessions and family moments. I'm gonna fucking cry. Beth's parents want to give Beth (and maybe Rick) a new costume. And I'm glad about it. One of the things I always wanted was for them to get new suits. Something to honor the past but be something new for them. Courtney made her own suit, and Yolanda's changed itself to fit her but has all sorts of different detailing when you compare it to what little we saw of Ted's version. Beth and Rick deserve that too. Yet again hoping for an epilogue scene so we can maybe see them.

What's left of Starman will forever and always be calling out for his best friend to save him.

Mike's meeting his mom! Goddamnit, I'm crying again. Fuck this show. And he called Barbara Mom. Courtney is meeting Gambler's daughter. She gave Becky his card. Fulfilled his final wish. Here's Grundy. Everybody gets a moment. Yolanda is even getting a chance with her mom. Courtney and Cameron finally get their moment. The whole family's together.

Of course, Jordan's alive. But Artemis has come for her revenge. He won't be alive for long. Homegirl burned his ass alive. Comeuppance.

Ten Years Later - Epilogue scene!

Tour guide Shade?? JSA Museum?? Courtney became Starwoman. Cindy became Dragon Queen. Jennie & Todd joined. It looks like Mike did become S.T.R.I.P.E. 2.0 eventually. Cameron, Jakeem, & Artemis joined. Sand I assume is Sandy Hawkins, ward/child of Wesley Dodds the Sandman. Damage is most likely Grant Emerson, son of the original Atom. Beth and Rick did get together and are getting married (officiated by Shade, hilarious). Even Grundy got to join!

Holy shit they did a lot.

Jay Garrick?? Hello??? Why do they have to tease us with this in the series finale? But maybe a hint that they'll be some Stargirl characters in the final season of Flash? Maybe just a way to show that the story never really ends. Who knows.

But no matter what, this is the end of this story.

You know, when Stargirl was first announced as part of the lineup of DC Original shows from DC Universe, I never intended to watch it. I didn't know anything about the character, or who her supporting cast might be. But I can now firmly say that this show has made Courtney Whitmore one of my favorite comic characters of all time. And I truly think that this show is among the very best of what this genre can do. I'm so glad I've given this show a chance.

I'm gonna be cheesy for a moment. I don't have a large audience, I'm not going to pretend I do. But I do have a handful of people who have been here for these little commentary posts since the beginning. I'm really happy I decided to do this. It's been a really good time. And I hope that you all enjoyed it. It's been a wild ride.

This show has meant a lot to me. Thank you, Stargirl for showing us what it really means to be a hero. Until next time.

Tell us about your Rick flashback thoughts

Anon, honey. I already did. But I'll just repost it here for you under the cut:

So, it’s a cloudy, windy day and Rick is driving. Nothing crazy, nothing traumatic or especially remarkable happens. He’s just driving. And suddenly the flashback hits all of us by surprise. It just shows up and goes out of nowhere and it’s focusing on baby Rick’s confused lost feeling of being abandoned first.

I’m going to assume Rick was coming back from feeding Grundy, so Grundy and the death of his parents was on his mind. The emphasis of this implies, to me, that Rick is thinking about this all the time. It’s an every day thing for him. Rick always remembers begging his parents not to leave him alone. It weighs on him. It’s shaped the way he’s lived.

Then the flashback cuts to his parents and how they died.

Whenever he’s there to go visit Grundy, he’s not really sure how or when Grundy will show up. Sure, he let him go, but what if he just comes barreling out of the forest and hits his car like he knows what happened to his mom or dad? Rick is thinking about this as he’s driving because he’s freaked out about it. He wants to take care of and feed Grundy because he doesn’t want him to cause trouble, as well as he couldn’t stand to kill him, but he’s still terribly on edge.

Only then we see him rolling into town and seeing Cameron’s mural. So there it is. A gigantic wall that is meant to be for Jordan Mahkent’s face. The villain. The evil mastermind behind the ISA attacks that Rick now knows was directly responsible for killing his parents and putting him there in that position. He just stares at it as this is all swirling into his mind and he’s thinking:

My dad deserves to be up there. Not yours. And there’s nothing I can do about it. And nobody will know who he was. My parents and their importance was forgotten and abandoned. What about their legacy?

and I truly believe that as he thinks these thoughts he feels like he knows some of them are flawed yes, Jordan's face doesn't deserve to be there but Cameron's feelings and grief about his father are no less valid than hisso he can't technically WILL himself to say anything to Cameron and that's what pisses him off so much so he says nothing but he still thinks it he thinks fuck Cameron and fuck his dad and fuck the life he still gets to live when i have nothing and a part of himself wonders if that's why he's still a little bit of a monster and when he's face to face with grundy and himself and eclipso is taunting him these images flash back into his mind of all the stuff he's done that he isn't proud of and he can't stand the thought that maybe even if the things he's seeing aren't really thereit's a darkness Rick had thought of in the first place and eclipso has only ever brought them to light

DC's Stargirl 3.10 "Chapter Ten: The Killer" has aired on the CW, and I'm here to talk about it

I like to call where we're at now the beginning of the end. We've had a lot of major reveals in the last episode or two, and things are finally amping up.

I really love some of these books the Crocks have. Some of my personal favourite stand-outs include: "Parenting from the Sidelines? How to Get Back in the Game", "How to Be an Ally", "Raising Resilient Kids" "Step One: Start Me into We", and "Not Too Tough to Be Kind". I always love seeing the Crocks be genuinely loving and kind parents, but also being real people and making an honest effort to be better than they were.

Goddamnit, I hate it when Sylvester has intelligent moments. Of course, all of the JSA's leads have been so convenient, but how dare Sylvester be the one who points it out.

Got a feeling that what Cameron knows "must be done next" is not the same thing as Granny knows. Yeah, he's probably gonna be pissed (and has every right to be) but I really doubt Cameron of all people is gonna decide that he needs to kill her. Fight her, tell her to fuck off forever? Sure. Kill her, or generally want her dead? Not likely.

Rick, this is concerning.

You know, Grandpa does have a point. They really were defending themselves. Rick is the one who jumped in and started punching. I don't think that they wouldn't eventually strike first if given the chance, but in this case, they didn't. Not to take away from this moment, but wtf Sylvester? Why are trying to fist-bump Pat because of Jordan's death?? Yes, Jordan was a bad guy, but that's fucked up dude. Especially in front of his fucking dad.

Oh cool, so Granny is coming to just straight-up murder Barbara. Rad. But Paula is here to save her and unlikely the JSA, she will kill this bitch.

Cindy's alive!! And she's so unimpressed with these idiots. She's hunting Ultra-Humanite, who we still don't know why he's around.

Batman name-drop! Starting to learn a little bit more about who is (or was) around in this world.

There's something really sweet about Paula teaching Barbara how to use a crossbow. "Not all superheroes fly through the air, some fire arrows" is a reference to how she's starting to see herself (or how she did, depending on her perspective) or a reference to someone like Green Arrow? From a meta-perspective, probably both. In-universe? Who knows.

Paula considers Barbara the only real friend she's ever had, I'm crying.

This is the conversation I've been waiting for all season! And Courtney's taking the fall for Mike, which is so in character for her. Knowing her, she might genuinely believe it's her fault too. Would love to explore whether or not that's true.

The Crocks coming to try and help out the JSA the best they can, without violence. Such growth from them. But also, they may have brought weapons and will try to take Granny & Grandpa out. Granny should probably be put down, but I think Grandpa isn't that bad.

I would've loved for the new JSA to have problems to solve that wasn't left over from the old JSA.

Looks like things went well with the Mahkent's. You know, all things considered.

So happy for Artemis, but the way this scene is set has me so nervous. Something really bad is about to happen, I can feel it in my bones. JORDAN?!?! I knew something terrible was going to happen! The Crocks are dead, Jordan is back, and Ultra-Humanite is still around. It's all bad! It's all very bad!!

I'm just so shocked. And concerned. This is why I called this episode the beginning of the end!! Everything's really bad now!!

okay I finished my hw and will continue screaming about this

The world is told a shitty lie about the murder of Jordan Mahkent. The earthquake caused a sign to fall on him. No body is found. Cam is suspicious. While everyone is having three different crisis he’s investigating the death of his father. HAHA what if artemis joins him occasionally. ooo yes. She isn’t his accomplice but she like helps sometimes 

Courtney is suspicious of them but then again toaster made her jump so she is simultaneously questioning her sanity and sure of herself.

Season 3 is not as flushed out but I’ll try

The four JSA plus Jada, Mike and Jakeem have to team up to defeat Icicle Jr. 

Artemis finally finds out about superheroes because she saw Cam turn into an icicle and is torn. Villains have friend Cam and crush Cindy but they also murder people which is a pain. Superheroes have Beth and she can bully Rick 

anyways I think Artemis wouldn’t side with Cam and Cindy but she wouldn’t immediately side with the supers. (Cam and Cindy is gay lesbian solidarity)

Courtney is slightly resentful of the fact that yolanda and beth were double agents. Like girl is paranoid this didn’t help. so she’s a little suspicious of them too. Rick is just happy Beth didn’t die. Jade is still kinda new so the double agents thing wasn’t as emotional. She saw it as a risky but smart idea and applauds the girls for it. Mike and Jakeem are just happy to be there. 

So anyways the team is a little disjointed at the beginning and poor Pat’s getting grays. (there’s like 3 eps of this) Then Cameron starts attacking. They try to reason with him but like what are they going to do. So they accept the idea that Cam can’t be stopped and instead they have to defeat him. 

yolanda is sad about this, she was fond of Cameron

as a separate storyline Rick is so happy Beth is safe. Like it’s so incredibly obvious how much Rick’s affections have grown. He’s no where near Ms. Ball of Sunshine but like his face is less angry. 

They finally talk about the death of Rick’s parents and it goes like this: 

Beth: You never got mad at me for killing your father.

Rick looked up from his chemistry text book. “Beth he abused me He was my worst enemy and sure what you did wasn’t great, you saved me. You saved me from years of more pain and gave me a family that cares about me. I could never be mad at you, especially not for that.”

This allows them to finally date since they talked about the elephant in the room.

also it’s worrying about college time baby! the gang is stressing about what to do for college. Pat convinces them to go out of state and breathe outside of blue valley

I want season 4 to be very psychological

like the four of them are very traumatized and this leaves them very codependent. I want a villian who will take advantage of that

Mike and Jakeem are protecting the city with help from Artemis and Pat

I want Beth and Rick to be like we are too codependent we need to break up cause beth is anxious Rick does a lot of what Beth says and they’re apart for like a week before realizing 1. that was a good relationship I’m not throwing it away 2. they really just need to talk about boundaries like what they’re comfortable with what they’re not etc. 

I think Cindy should occasionally help mike Jakeem and Artemis which makes artemis fall more in like with her and earns mike and jakeem’s grudging respect.

When Courtney finds out she’s furious and puts on her suit to fight Cindy. 

I still want Cindy to be like an anti hero. Like her rage isn’t directed at Courtney anymore but she still has malicious rage. Also she applogizes to Yolanda and personally goes to Yolanda’s parents to kinda threateningly explain what happens. (Yes this is happening cause I find it sexy shut the fuck up) 

I would like for maybe not in S4 but for Yolanda to realize she’s queer and go through a whole journey and like Courtney is very supportive and Yolanda thinks she’s the only queer out of the four but like Rick is the only straight one (sides Jakeem and Mike I’m not counting them)

so like it goes like

Yolanda: What am I your token gay, your gay best friend? *laughs*

Courtney, confused: I’m pan?

Beth: I’m queer

Cindy: How dare you assume I’m straight. Did you see how much I flirted with Courtney. Honestly some the nerve of some people. what did you want me to kiss Courtney on the mouth my God

Artemis: I’m an ace bi

Beth: Did you know in the 80s ace wlw were called bambi lesbians?

Courtney opens her mouth

Artemis: no

Courtney: in reality yolanda, Rick’s the token straight white male

Rick: that’s- yeah okay.

ok so @sirius-xthem @hournites were like what happens if the jsa finds out about matt’s abuse? would someone murder him? (not their exact words but what they meant)

so season 2 starts with yolanda trying to deal with the fact that she murdered brainwave . it’s not that she regrets it, but she still feels guilty, God says not to kill and her parents already hate her, imagine if they find out she murdered someone?

meanwhile, courtney’s itching for another fight. she’s become paranoid and suspicious. beth and rick are initially trying to fix chuck. the gang starts to notice that rick rarely goes home, often staying at one of their houses. this is because matt started dating someone who is also abusive. he doesn’t know how to handle it. one abuser he can handle, two was another thing, and two abusers plus ptsd is a whole monster (ha)

one day beth heads over to his house to surprise him. she became so used to just showing up at the pit stop and the whitmore that it never occurred to her to not show up randomly at matt’s house. (rick at this point also hasn’t made the abuse known)

she knocks on the door matt opens they have a tense but civil conversation until matt realizes that beth is part of the reason that rick is never home to order around and etc. once he realizes it this quickly turn physical. he attacks beth who fights back in self defense. the girlfriend comes out and joins the attack. unintentionally beth murders matt and the gf would be framed because beth runs away and by the times the cops come the gf is covered in his blood. (also because of beth’s sunshine reputation no one believes that she could murder someone)

meanwhile the jsa sees ricks scars and they know that he didn’t receive those in battle. they coax the truth of him and pats angry. in an effort to change the subject rick says beth’s been gone for too long without contact and he’s going out to look for her. he leaves too quickly for the others to argue.

beth is idk where yet, i pictured her in a field. and rick slowly approaches her and he notices there’s blood and he’s worried and when he comes close she scrambles back and screams for him to stand back.

eventually they, pat courtney and yolanda and rick, coax the truth out of beth and they are stunned. yolanda feels dread that another friend has to go through the dread she did and vows to help beth through it (she doesn’t want to see beth’s light go out) rick is shocked on one hand no more mat but on the other hand beth’s so shaken, how can he help.

pat assumes legal guardianship of rick and now rick and courtney have to live together. this leads to a lot of hijinks between the dougan-whitmore family.

beth and yolanda bond over accidentally murdering in self defense. cindy controlled by eclipso realizes that beth and yolanda have both murdered someone. she goes to them to bond over accidentally murdering someone. at first they are hesitant to befriend her but they are and by they i mean beth, the see the best in people. they choose to not tell anyone about their friendship with cindy.

cindy is being controlled by eclipso who wants more followers to control. cindy tries to use beth and yolanda anger and malcontent to persuade them to eclipso’s side. yolanda and beth realize but they don’t decide to go undercover to take down eclipso.

during the final battle beth and yolanda use the power of light (eclipso’s one weakness) to defeat him. this marks the end or the growth from their self hatred to acceptance, the knowledge that they can’t change the past but they can change the future.

notes that i wasn’t able (forgot) to include:

rick goes from extreme anger to extreme happiness to help be less of a burden to everyone. he’s thought process: you should be happy young uncle is dead and your in a good home and beth doesn’t need more angst in her life. he eventually realizes that while yes they are good things, if his body and mind isn’t going to be happy he cant force that.

rick and beth grow closer. they’re roles as rock and emotional flurry are swapped but it’s what they needed

rick also will at some point have to go to therapy for extensive abuse. pat and barbara will help a lot but not enough

courtney grows more suspicious as the season grows on. no one is like they seem cause they went through and are going through a major event. also i want her to go through more angst but with her california friends cause i am mean.

yolanda teaches beth self defense because it helps her remember that just because she killed someone in a fight once doesn’t mean she’ll always be that violent in a fight. plus beth needs self defense. this self defense is what enables beth to kill matt

barbara figured out that beth killed matt but doesn’t day anything about it (come on the woman isn’t or can’t be that oblivious now that she knows it)

pat is trying to be a good father to so many more kids than when he started pls salute him.

issac bowins anger leads him to join cindy and eclipso. so does sports master and tigress but artemis is still unaware of #superheores

during the final battle sir justin brings the new superheroes to help fight eclipso

and idk enough about jade so i didn’t include her (i forgot) I FUCKING FORGOT ABOUT CAMERON SHIT SHIT SHIT
