Dear Holly,

There are no words to describe how sorry I am and even if I could find them, you’d always deserve more. More than this, more than me.

You don’t deserve this and I know that writing you this letter is the cowardly way out, but you know as well as I do that I’m better with the written word than a verbal one. 

I cannot begin to tell you how many nights I have lain awake in bed thinking of you and thinking of what I should’ve said or need to say but I truly hope this can bring you peace so you know why this happened.

You may not believe me, but I promise that what I have done has no reflection on you or my feelings towards you. Leaving was hard but what I have now done to you has destroyed me, which I know I deserve. When I left home, I had no intention of staying in Washington and I had every intention of getting the first flight back to you when I knew my mom was well enough. 

About two weeks after I got here, I ran into my ex fiancée and she was pushing a stroller. She told me that the little baby inside was mine. My world was rocked to its core and even though this is when I stopped contact, that wasn’t deliberate. I struggled so much with this information that I barely spoke to anyone outside of the people regularly in my mom’s room. By the time I had come to terms with it enough to contact you, I’d let outside influences mess with my mind and I truly believed that you’d be better off if I left it.

No part of me wanted to leave you, but I also didn’t see that I had an option. I should never have done it in the way I did, but each time I tried to call or text, I couldn’t find the words. How could I tell you I was a father and you would be a step mother with your whole life ahead of you? My life would’ve changed so significantly, I might not have been able to stay in Briar Ridge and I could never ask you to leave your family. 

Although my mom was getting better, I was still spending so much time there and with my focus on her, I had never stopped to do the math. When my mom was almost fully healed and I had the time to think, I realised that the dates didn’t match. When I asked my ex, she broke down and confessed that the baby wasn’t mine, but that she had panicked and wanting her child to have a father, she had told me it was mine.

It was heartbreaking saying goodbye to that baby and although I thought I could try and be her support, I was too hurt. Luckily, the baby won’t remember me and I’m glad that they won’t know any hurt from this. 

I’d also like to assure that nothing happened between my ex and I, nothing had happened between us since before I moved to Briar Ridge, well before I met you. 

Sunshine, you were my whole world, you consumed every thought and every dream. They say no human is perfect, but you came so excruciatingly close, I think they need to review that statement. I want nothing other than for you to be happy, for you to live the most amazing life with your family and your friends and a person who deserves the total and complete love you have to offer. It hurts me beyond comprehensible words that person cannot be me, but I wish more than anything it could be. Walking away from you was the hardest thing I have ever done and it haunts my every thought and dream. It is the biggest regret of my life. For the rest of my time, I will be more sorry than I can express.

My world will always be more grey without my ray of sunshine in it. To a boring world, you brought glorious technicolor and I hope that one day I hear of you and you’re the happiest you could possibly be.

I’m so sorry for doing this to you, Holly. I’m sorry to the people who have to see you hurt. I’m sorry to let you down and do the thing I promised I would never do. You truly are remarkable and it will always be the happiest time of my life.

I know this doesn’t make up for what I did, baby, but I hope it at least answers some questions for you. 

If you do ever want to contact me about anything in this letter, I will always answer the phone. 

I will love you until my last breath. I’m so sorry.

thought he would give the rent (£20 a year) - gave SW- my address at Hammersleys in case he should want to write to A- and had no other orders from her - gave him (very handsomely) his congé from my stewardship - said if there was an honest man, I believed him to be one - had no fault to find (said thought not of the levelling business and valuation of Hill top) it was  [mere]  matter of convenience that I should have Mr. Parker to receive and pay all - Poor SW- said ‘it will make no difference’ - I then talked about his lithographed plan of the township of Southowram - he said it would cost 40 guineas for a hundred copies - the sale of 60 guineas - copies would repay him - bade him write a little prospectus - set about a subscription and I would put my name down for 2 copies and would put A-‘s down for one and would venture on Mrs. S-‘s name for one - this last however I had best tell W- to let off from - he went away at 10 20 - then breakfast and with Marian till 11 ½ - she mending my gloves - then out - with Robert Mann + 3 draining and levelling behind the farmyard - he said SW- had just told him Husband and Oates had moved and set SW-‘s peg 18in. higher in the walk which accounted for the difference in their levelling and his - and I should only be able to draw off 2ft. 6in. of water instead of 5ft. - Holt not satisfied about all this - kept Robert near an hour from his dinner giving directions about Lodge drift and pulling up the stuff and laying in along the road wall - off to John Oates at 1 for about an hour - had all the levelling business over - he surprised that SW- should continue mentioning it - his (W-‘s) peg about a ft. too low, so that W-‘s line was by so much an inclined plane instead of a level line - should be able to draw off 4ft. of water as always proposed - if I could draw off a ft. more the water must come lower on to the wheel, and I should thus loose far more than I gained - much coal-talk - he said I should get £200 per acre for the coal - could not well get 3 acres a year at one pit -said I thought of another near the highroad (in Wellroyde land) - JO- very much for this - talked as if coals might rise in price asked him to give me on my return a sketch of the manner (ground plan) in which the colliery should be worked - should not get all in one square, but in a narrow line or strip upwards so as to keep the coal as nearly of the same value (1st and last) as I could on account of the sameness of distance from the pit - then with R- went with JO- into his tenterfield - said the old pit hill (about 15 yards square) might be levelled down and newly soiled over - then with Robert Mann + 3 and Mosey setting gate from Allen car into Little field and with Mark helping him in the intervals of levelling after the Northgate carts - about 5 ½ took Robert and his men to get largeish holly up out of the walk (the last remaining) and spruce and silvre firs and 2 arbores vitae and 1 yew from near the 2 large Scotch firs in the wood and saw them all planted in the çidevant paddock - then had William Green - said if he left his present house to go back to the one I bought of him, I should turn his daughter out - I would have nothing to do with her - William said she did not behave well to him, and he thought of leaving her to be quiet - said he was to draw his money (purchase money of cottages) out of Mr. Parker’s hands as he (WG-) liked till he had done it all, and then I would take care of him tho’ I would do nothing for his daughter - then had Barstow - told him to get more explicit note from Bray of consent and ditto from Mr. Wainhouse about the foundry - and then A- would agree - Rent £120 per annum for 7 years from 1 April 1837. this year to be £50 except after the rate of £40 per annum for engine and foundry from the time of their being workable - B- to keep all in repair and pay all taxes and pay insurance to be raised in proportion to rise of rent, or otherwise as might seem fair - read him the written directions A- gave me - Letter from A- this evening - pretty good account - pretty fair spirits - kept Oddy standing by me with the open letter bag in her hand while I wrote 3 pages in 5 or 10 minutes and set them off to A- 28 Blake street York saying I thought she would rather have this scrawl than no letter - then went down to Barstow again (for he had waited) and gave him a note to Mr. Bray saying A- would agree with Barstow and co. if he (Bray) would inform A- by note that he had no objections - dinner at 8 ½ and coffee and Marian with me all the time till went to my aunt at 9 ¾ to 10 ½ - from then to 1 making out Agenda and writing out the journal of today -

It might have been kinder for Callum to be honest, but he had barely been able to get a word in with this girl, and he knew that if he didn't do something, then hours would go by, and it would be too late then. "Huh? Oh, yea... I've a daughter, she's nine this month," he said with a friendly smile. He glanced at the name tag and chuckled, "Yea, I didn't even notice that. I just have seen you around town. There's not many red heads about -- sorry, I'm Callum." He offered a hand, then immediately went red with embarrassment. Did people still shake hands? It felt too formal.

"Right, the plan..." For a moment, he had completely forgotten about the date. "Ah, smart. Too smart for a bartender, what's the catch?" He teased. "Fuck, right..." Callum looked around confused for a moment, then settled into a pose on the bartop that was comedically unnatural, but he was stuck in it now. "Heeeey..." before he could speak she was already rambling, and Callum was glancing at Holly, desperately waiting for her to act.

Admittedly, the ideas had sounded a lot better in her head. Though it wasn't always easy to think on her feet. She had only ever found herself in this situation once, and even then, Holly had been brutally honest with the guy. "Babysitter? You're a dad?" Quirking an eyebrow, she looked at him curiously. "Yes, it's Holly... although the name tag probably helps. And you are?"

As laughter escaped her lips, the redhead began wiping down the bar top, trying to make herself look busy in the event that her boss walked by. "Now, here's the plan. I'm going to call the bar from my cell and pretend it's a call for you. Then you come back and talk to the 'babysitter' and while you do, I'll work on trying to get her to leave." Just as she finished speaking, Holly spotted his date exiting the washroom, the look of her already causing a chill to run down Holly's spine. "Quick, act natural."

He'd been going to the popular town cafe most days since he arrived back in town, only to grab a to-go coffee, at different times of the day, just to see if he would run into her. Once upon a time, they had both been regulars there and they'd spent more time splitting their favourite cake or pastry than he cared to calculate. In some ways, with their quieter side and cosy loving demeanours, it had been their spot.

But then he screwed it all up.

The weather had cooled down slightly and as a breeze rolled through town, it was like it brought a wave of sudden tension to his shoulders, although he couldn't quite figure out why. Maybe it was because he was verging on creepy with how often he was popping into the bakery, hoping to see the one person who brought light into the shadows of his mind.

It was a quiet day and it hadn't taken him long to have his black coffee, one sugar, in hand whilst his sandwich was heated up. He hadn't even considered the possibility that he'd actually see her, not after so many attempts, in the most cowardly way he could find, but as the door opened and his head snapped up, there she was. She was even more beautiful than he remembered and at the sight of her, he felt his throat dry, his lips part and his shoulders tighten even more.

There she was. And all he could do was stare.

It was always heartwarming to see others take to Buster, and Gabe couldn't help but smile as the two acquainted themselves. Thanks to Holly's kind welcome of the furball, he already felt welcome, and he knew that Buster was safe here. That hadn't always been the case back in Chicago. This was refreshing. "Sure thing," Gabe replied, hopping back in his truck. "You two lead the way," he called out with a bubble of laughter. Gabe followed along to the small cabin, then pulled up outside. Buster had been glued to her the whole time like she had control over him, rare for the young dog. He usually ran around causing a scene. "I think he might have a new favorite," Gabe joked, stepping out of the vehicle. "I'm getting jealous," he added with a grin.

By the time she had noticed the dog darting toward her, Holly had already bent at the knee, ready to receive as many kisses as Buster had to offer her. While she hadn't known what to make of her cousin's friend, people with pets sure had a way of warming her heart. If anyone was kind enough to love and care for an animal, then they were good in her books, and Buster was already her new best friend. "Of course I don't mind! What a cutie.. And I mean Buster, not you."

Sure to specify, a playful smile lingered upon Holly's lips as she ran her fingers through the husky's fur. But while she could have spent the entire day loving on her new friend, Holly knew that she had more important things to do. "You can follow me over to the cabin in your truck. That way you don't have to carry your luggage across the field." With a small chuckle, Holly stood herself back up straight, already waving him along as she set off on foot, Buster trailing behind her.

No kiss rain last night from between 11 and 12 to after one - rainy morning but not heavy rainy  till near 9 then fair and F55° - breakfast at 9 ¼ - A- getting off her speech for the first stone laying and I writing out mine put on my new pelisse and had my hair done - Marian was to have gone to the 1st stone laying, but got nervous and staid at home - A- and I off at 10 ¾ in my own carriage (with our 2 men behind) to Northgate hotel - not quite ready for us - began looking over the drawings of Northgate and by mistake kept the people waiting and did not begin the ceremony till about 11 ¾ which lasted about ¼ hour - A- did her part very well - the coins of the King’s reign (William IV) i.e. a sovereign, ½ ditto, ½ crown, shilling and sixpence (could not get at 7/. piece very scarce - Swanns the bankers in York had only seen two of William 14th 7/. pieces) were put into a large mouthed green glass bottle as also an inscription engraved on sheet-lead and rolled up tight - the cork was dripped in tar, then put into the neck of the bottle and covered over with course red wax - should have been hermetically sealed but Messrs. Harper and Husband could not get it done - had no blowpipe - I said I could have got it done at old Charles Howarth’s - no! because it was not plate glass - the green glass too difficult to fuse! the stone in which the hole was made that [A-] put the bottle into was a larger square piece of rough stone from one of Stock’s quarries, whence comes the rest of the stone wanted, and formed the footing of the front corner (nearest Halifax) of the casino - over this footing was put a very large mass of girt-stone quarried at Northgate in digging for the cellar, and which they called the foundation stone - there must have been a hundred people collected round the spot - 2 neatly dressed young ladies? some respectable looking men and the rest rabble - there was a little crowd to push thro’ to get into the wall-race - Mr Nelson junior and his men were in working costume - the bottle was held in hand by A- while she addressed Mr N- as follows ‘Mr Nelson, I have been requested to my friend Miss Lister, to lay the 1st tone of a casino, which will form a spacious and commodious saloon to be annexed to the Northgate hotel - I will only add that we hope and trust that the undertaking will prove an accommodation to the inhabitants of this town and neighbourhood, in whose prosperity we feel interested; that it will be an accommodation to the public at large, and that it will do credit to all the individuals concerned in its erection’ - This said A- deposited the bottle - 8 or 10 men lowered down and properly placed over it the foundation stone to which A- then gave 3 right earnest strokes with her mallet, and I spoke as follows looking now at Mr N- and now at the people assembled round -  ‘Mr Nelson - my friend Miss Walker has done us great honour, and I trust her good wishes will not be in vain - I am very anxious that this Casino with its annexed Hotel should be  an accommodation to the public at large, but more especially to this my native town in whose prosperity I ever have felt, and ever shall feel, deeply interested - I earnestly hope that the work we are now beginning, will do credit to us all - may the voice of Discord be never heard within its walls, may persons of every share of varying opinion meet together here in amity and in charity and my none ever go away dissatisfied but such, if such there be, whom good cheer and good humour cannot please!’ - I heard someone of the crown say ‘very well’ - A- and I hurried back into the carriage 3 cheers were given - Mr Harper gave us back the silver trowel, and we drove off to call on Mr and Mrs Musgrave at the vicarage - the inscription on the sheet-lead put into the bottle (written by Mr Gray on Tuesday) was as follows

‘The first stone of a spacious Casino, which will be annexed to a handsome public hotel, to be erected at Halifax was laid on the 26th day of September A.D. 1835. in the sixth year of the reign of King William IV by Miss Ann Walker the younger of Cliff Hill, Yorkshire in the name and at the request of her particular friend Miss Anne Lister of Shibden Hall, Yorkshire, owner of the property.’

Sat 3/4 hour from 12 5 to 12 50 at the vicarage with Mr and Mrs M- I mentioned A-‘s having been laying the 1st stone of the Casino - they, or rather Mrs M- let out their belief that the thing would not answer - said it was reported Mr Carr of the White Swan had taken it - of which I said I knew nothing - I see most people think the thing will be a losing concern and laugh at me for so throwing away my money - nous verrons - called at Mr Parker’s office (he came to the carriage door) to say the Sutherlands were to be in Halifax - we supposed at Mr P-‘s at 2 ½ - I ordered handbills to be put against holly stealers and wood and young tree damagers offering 10/ reward for each one taken, on conviction - home about 1 ½ - some while with my aunt - repeated our speeches and amused her - found A-‘s quondam Highlander servant James come to see her -

Mr Harper came at 2 - in and out with him till left him at the tail-goit at 4 ½ , I to go to meet A- at Cliff Hill, and he to go to Mawson’s Stump x Inn to see that the dinner at 5 for the Northgate workmen was all right - Mawson much obliged - thought it would have been at Carr’s - asked 1/3  head for eating and 2/6 a head for drink - Mr Harper gave him 1/6 a head for eating and his price for drink = 4/. a head - I thought to have given 5/ a head- with Mr Harper at the cascade bridge and at Adney bridge, and in the new farmyard - they had got wrong this morning with the buttress - the 2nd ramp above the wall instead of being a ft or 2 below it - approved Mr Harper’s consequent manner of finishing them - carrying them above the wall and capped chevron-wise - Gave him Washington plan of the engine wheel dam goit - he is to calculate the proper dimensions of the wheel - found that the Manns were driving the tail-goit dead level instead of giving it 2ft. of fall from the mouth to the wheel as Mr Harper had advised and I thought I had fully explained to Holt - Mr Harper told them to give 18inch of fall (supposing about ¼ of the length of goit to be done) from where they left off to the wheel - the fall of 4inch at the last 3 or 4 yards towards the mouth - foolish - asked Mr Harper why he gave back the trowel, I supposing Nelson ought to have had it - he said when the owner of the property laid the 1st stone, sometimes the architect got the trowel, and sometimes those kept it who could get hold of it - but when a stranger (not the owner) laid the 1st stone, he thought it customary to give the trowel to the stranger as a memorial of their building, and he thought therefore Miss W- should have it - thanked him for the hint - but said I, there ought to be an inscription - talked it over a little - said I would send him the trowel tonight with a copy of the inscription and an impression of my arms - he said Cattle and Barber would engrave it well, but were so dear - this, in this case, not to be minded - would perhaps charge 2 guineas for the engraving - asked 5 for the trowel, but he bound them down to price per oz. and got the trowel (well made and good) for 3 guineas - At Cliff hill at 5 5 - there about ½ hour -  Mrs AW in her best sorts - the Sutherlands gone to Mr Parker’s in Washington’s gig - A- and I walked back by Lower brea and the walk, and came in at 6 35 - A- wrote a handsome letter to Mr Gray speaking handsomely of Mr Watson - persuaded Mr G- could not have sent any one more likely to satisfy all parties - had great pleasure Mr Washington had [proved] right, and the deeds were quite correct - I wrote out the following inscription for the trowel                        

‘To Miss Walker the younger of Cliff Hill, Yorkshire, For laying the first stone of the Casino, to be annexed to the Northgate Hotel at Halifax. XXVI  VIIbr. [September] A.D. MDCCCXXXV.’  

Had just done as A- came to say the Sutherlands who had come a few minutes before had inquired about my block tin deed-box - told her to shew them upstairs into to the kitchen chamber where it has stood since A- came very civil to the S-s - opened the box for them and advised about it - then shewed the inscriptions - Mrs S- seemed pleased - in short, we are capital friends - they stood talking upstairs and down in the drawing room - captain S- wrote a note for George to take to Mr Parker (to countermand places in the coach for Tuesday morning to Manchester and say they would stay till Friday A- had persuaded them to stay - they were easily persuaded) - and Mrs S- took a glass of wine and a biscuit - in the midst about 7 ½ Mr Gray was announced - we all startled but A- remembered it must be Mr S. Gray - had him in the drawing room for the S-s escaped into the little north parlour on the 1st sound of his name, and went away - apologized to Mr SG- saying his room was not quite ready - he would be dull tomorrow and I thought he had better go to the Inn (Carr’s) till Monday morning - sent him in the hot roll of beef A- and I were to have had and potatoes etc etc and said the servant was going to the post in about an hour, and would take his (Mr SG’s) travelling bag - Came upstairs A- added a post scriptum to her letter to Mr Gray to say the S-s had just been here and Captain S- said there were some errors in the deeds but which she did not pretend to understand - I did up the trowel and inscription and sent them by George (at 8 ¾) to Mr Harper at the White Swan (Carr’s) and A- sent her letter and Mr SG went back to the Inn - dinner at 8 ¾ - coffee - my father going to bed as we sat down to dinner - it seems captain S- makes a great merit (as great as he can) of having found out errors in the deeds - humbug - Washington was right - pointed the required plantation (1ac.0r.14 perches at Windy End Golcar) in an instant - was at Crownest all the while and would have been at Cliff Hill in 2 or 3 minutes - was not the real fact that Captain S- wanted an excuse for conning over the deeds at his leisure again and with Mr Parker? what must Messrs. Gray and Watson think of him? with my aunt from 10 to 10 35 - then wrote the last 14 lines of yesterday and the first 7 of today - very fine day  F57 ½° now at 11 35 pm

It had never mattered where they had been in the world or the country but when there 911 text came through, life got dropped so they could get to each other or at least on facetime. The 911 text had been the first thing Lia had done when she had found the texts between her former friend and her ex, even as she stood on the side of the road, ignoring said ex as he pleaded with her to get back into the car. This time, she and Mari had made it to their favourite local bar in record time. "Do you know what this is about? I don't think we've been 911-ed for at least a year."

Taking a sip of her drink, Lia raised a hand to wave as she spotted the familiar head of red hair, opening her mouth to reply to Holly as she reached them, only for the drink to be plucked from her hand anyway. "Oh, it's one of the days where you don't care huh?" Rummaging in her purse, Lia sensed it would be one of those nights where they needed to pull out the big guns. "Danny, if I give you this-" she handed her credit card over to the bartender they knew far too well, "can you just keep 'em coming?" Glancing over at Mari with a little look of concern on her face, Lia shuffled over to free up the middle stool. "What's going on, angel face? I'm guessing you didn't send the 911 text just to see our adorable faces?"

Holly had called for an emergency meeting the second she'd left Everything Goes. With Nate in town, her head was spinning and she didn't know who or what to believe. On one hand, she wanted to be angry. To make him feel as heartbroken as she'd been for the first six months that he'd been gone. But on the other, she needed to know if she had any reason to forgive him.

Making her way through the crowded room, Holly spotted her friends already seated on two stools near the end of the bar. It was crazy to believe how much better she already felt being near them. The only thing she needed now was a drink. Preferably, a strong one. "God, am I ever glad to see you guys. I haven't been able to think straight all day. What're you drinking?" she asked, already grabbing the cup from Lia's hand and taking a long swig. Anything and everything that would assist in numbing her emotions was what Holly needed.
