One part of the Uglies adaption I was very surprised by, not even in a negative way, just that I hadn't imagined it like this at all all these years, was the colors and the aesthetic.

The Pretty Regime is all about fun and happiness and no real problems or challenges and nothing under the surface. It seemed very logical to me that it would have an aesthetic like a mix of Y2K chrome futurism and Frutiger Areo but with the brightness turned up and the saturation slightly down. Very rounded off, very colorful, very friendly.

This is the reason why I draw Tally as an Ugly as always wearing pastel colored things, and Shay and David, as a sign that they are outside this system, wearing black and olive green and brown as a contrast.

And yeah, they mostly wear school uniforms in the movie (which is such an alien concept to me as a German I simply did not imagine them wearing these often), but even these I imagined much more colorful, with each dorm and maybe even each class having their own patterns and colors.

It would also fit so well to how Tally and the others are taught that this is the best possible society and there are no societal problems anymore, and make her understanding that this is not actually the case more jarring.

With this in mind it also makes sense that Dr. Cable and the other Specials, in the books not associated with white but with grey and black, stand out so much, when everything else is these joyful colors.

Don't think this would have necessarily the better choice, though. Sure, it would have made the adaption look visually distinct from the adaptions of the later dystopias, and also fit well into the worldbuilding and symbolism-wise.

But also having the architecture for the Uglies be grey brutalism, and their clothes just joyless grey with some joyless grey patterns, and the Pretties having a whole other visual style is such a good idea and works really well as addition to the worldbuilding. And since this is a visual style already associated with YA dystopia, it does need much lesser time to "establish" everything.

Half Genie Clockdrone

Oh hey, would you look at the time! Time for some more dronification stuff! :D … See it’s funny because this particular drone that Thayla is is named a Clockdrone and I opened this description with a line about how…

Not slowing down with the “putting Thayla though dronification” train I’ve decided to get her as another kind of drone. A kind that belongs to another friend of mine, HypnoScream. Plus, they just dropped some new lore about the queen of these drones so now feels like a perfect time to get something involving one of my cast as one. That new character and lore they dropped recently wasn’t the reason I got inspired to comm this by the way, this is another one of those idea’s I’ve had for a while now and that pic of their queen just pushed me to get it now. Clockdrones, aside from having a rather nice design, are drones conditioned to help create the perfect and most orderly timeline. And really, anyone who knows anything about my girl can probably already guess why I picked her to be a clockwork drone. Her own power of being able to reverse herself in time. She’s perfect to be a time based drone! That, and turning my usual “out for only herself” thief OC into an obedient drone with the purpose of creating an orderly timeline just fits WAY to well and spoiler alert, this isn’t the only hypnosis based concept tied to Thayla I’ve had around that premise I have in my head. ;D

Of course, with the recent lore Scream did give about the queen of Clockdrones Hourli and how she’s part of Scream’s in universe organization and how I’m friends with Scream, I’m sure I could influence him to influence Hourli to influence Clockdrone Thayla to create my ideal timeline. After all, she is half genie and she should grant someone’s wish right? My first timeline alteration wish, we never phased out the retro futurism aesthetic of the mid 1900’s! … But if Thayla was influenced to do that we probably wouldn’t of gotten the Y2K and Frutiger Areo aesthetics of the 2000’s and me being the 2000’s kid I am I love those aesthetics to death and tend to lean a lot towards things that have those aesthetics on top of Retro Futurism…… Okay, how about this! We influence her to make summer disappear because I hate that season so much and have no idea how some people are able to tolerate the heat!... And risk causing certain food that grows the best in summer to never grow at all…… Umm, give Sam Rami the time he needs to make his Spider-Man 3 and not force him to incorporate a villain he knew nothing about?... And risk me not being as into the Symbiote as I am now…

Look, I’ve seen A LOT of time travel stories in my life to know that anything I could talk them into changing would probably not go as I want it two fully. Hell, the biggest inspiration for Thayla’s main power is literally a story about a Prince who tires to do the right thing by changing the timeline only to fuck things up worse for both himself and his people lol. Maybe I’ll leave what Clockdrone Thayla alters up to Hourli alone lol.
