This soft orange fruit has a sour taste but contains twice the amount of vitamin C of an average orange. It is a Sundrop or Guayabilla and is used to make juice or jam. We ate this one in a smoothie yesterday and it was delicious mixed with bananas and pineapple. Since we only have one bush of these at Finca EcoVida and it has just started fruiting we have been saving all the seeds to replant. . Message us if you are interested in growing your own sundrop we have a few plants available for sale. . . . #costarica #fincaecovida #ecovidacostarica #fruit #fruithunter #sundrop #guayabilla #permaculture #tropicalfruit (at Mesas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD4DKpFnOau/?igshid=1h0jurexufj8m

Dragon Fruit
Tumblr media
Dragon fruit (also known as Pitaya or Pitahaya) is a fruit of a variety of cactus species. It is indigenous to Central and South America. Early missionaries brought Pitaya to Asia where it has since been renamed and is more commonly known as, Dragon Fruit. The fruit is grown all over tropical and subtropical regions of the world, for example: Southeast Asia, Mexico, Guatemala, and Australia.
Peak dragon fruit season is in the summer and early fall. Depending on where you go and if the fruit is in season the cost can range from $3 to $8 per pound.
Dragon fruit can be found at specialty grocery stores or farmers market.
I went to T&T Supermarket to find dragon fruit.
Tumblr media
I went to T&T to find dragon fruit because the popularity of the fruit has grown in Asian cultures I thought it could be easily found.
Tumblr media
I was right! The fruit was also on sale since it was within peak season.
While choosing your dragon fruit look for smooth skin and evenly distributed colour.
Tumblr media
Dragon fruit has a faint sweet taste and while eating the fruit you might feel little grits from the seeds that sort of resembles seeds from a kiwi.
The fruit can be eaten on its own or added to a fruit salad. It can also be made in to a smoothie or sorbet.
For example, here is Minimalist Baker’s recipe to a Creamy Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl:
https://minimalistbaker.com/creamy-dragon-fruit-smoothie-bowl/
The fruit contains multiple antioxidants that are beneficial for good health. Dragon fruit also contains many vitamins and minerals that are important for a healthy body. It is worth purchasing even on off peak season because of the many health benefits it provides.
Enjoy!

ATEMOYA - ROLLINA DELICIOSA FRUIT 🍴 This is what i saw when i looked out of my last room in Sepilok! 😁 Almost everday i could watch a total of 3 different types of squirrel feasting on these fruits on the tree, and yes, that's a feast for them! 😄 I saw one squirrel ate 1,5 fruits in one sitting, in maybe 10-15min. Those who know how big these fruits are, 1,5 fruits in that tiny animal, thats terrific. 😉 Who can count the treasures? 😁 - #lfrv #lfrv811 #801010 #rawtillfour #rawtill4 #rarefruits #fruitporn #tropicalfruits #banana #rohkost #rohköstler #frutarier #foodnsport #fruithunter #durianhunter #durianhunting #durian #lowfatrawvegan #veganchange #rawvegan #traveling #borneo #frutarian #fruits #fruit #rawfood #rollina #atemoya #junglefruit #sabah (hier: Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia)

This is our 5th red pitaya (dragon fruit) from Finca EcoVida in Las Mesas. Today we shared this beauty with our team in Bejuco because they have never tried this fruit before. Everyone loved the taste and texture. We can't wait to get our first white fruits soon so we can all taste test those too. 🙏🎉👍 . . . #puravida #parrita #lasmesas #fincaecovida #dragonfruit #pitaya #pitahaya #fruit #fruithunter #costarica #permaculture #ilovenature #organic #nofilter #nofilterneeded (at Parrita, Puntarenas, Costa Rica) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDO6c7aJMRo/?igshid=1ef4w4aih5mhr

The elusive Fruithunter
The Fruithunter (Chlamydochaera jefferyi) is an elusive member of the thrush family (Turdidae) endemic to the tropical island of Borneo. Graduate student Adam Mitchell is studying these birds in Kinabalu Park, Sabah, Malaysia to better understand the Fruithunter’s breeding biology.
Last year he published the first description of the breeding biology for the Fruithunter, published in The Wilson Journal of Ornithology. Breeding biology data is sparse for many tropical Asian bird species; Mitchell’s work is important in helping scientists understand life history evolution and global variations in avian diversity.
Mitchell and co-authors Fred Tuh of Sabah Parks, and Thomas Martin, his adviser here at the Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, also described a new vocalization which expands the vocal repertoire for Fruithunters.
Mitchell recently took this picture of some eight-day old Fruithunter nestlings as he was measuring their metabolic rates. Recognize their temporary nest?!

Fruit Hunting
On Wednesday October 19th, after class, I took a short trip to the St. Lawrence Market.
Tumblr media
The reasons why i chose this market is because it was the most convenient market, since it was the closest school. Another reason is because I've been here many times, so I know where everything is already.
I decided to just stop by the first produce store I saw when I entered the building; which was Ponesse Foods.
Tumblr media
During my search throughout the store, I happened to find only very common fruits. Until after I reached the end of the store, I discovered something new to my eyes and my palate. Persimmons!
Tumblr media
Persimmons:
Botanical name: Diospyros kaki L.
Latin for  “food of the gods.”
Usually grown in warm, dry climates
Persimmons came from Japan and is Japan’s national fruit.
Persimmon seeds first came to the United States from Japan in 1856. They are now grown in several countries such as: China, Burma, Northern India, Australia, US (mostly California)
In season from October-February.
At the market, it was priced at $2.99 per pound, and $6.60 per kg.
Tumblr media
Sensory Evaluation:
It reminded me of a tomato with an orange skin. (At first, i thought it was a tomato). When taking a bite from it, it tasted very sweet, almost like a honey-sweet type of flavour. This food is unique because it looks similar to a tomato, but tastes nothing like it.
I wouldn’t cook the persimmon, since it tastes fine raw. I would use it in this salad recipe:
Persimmon and Goat Cheese Salad
Ingredients:
6 cups greens (mixed, any style)
1 Fuyu persimmon, diced
1 small apple, diced
1/2 cup soft goat cheese, crumbled
3 Tbsps sliced almonds, toasted
4 Tbsps. tangerine juice
2 Tbsps olive oil
1/2 tsp dijon mustard
1 pinch salt
2 dashes pepper
Procedure:
Place the greens in a salad bowl and top with the fruits and goat cheese.
In a small bowl, whisk tangerine juice, mustard, salt and pepper. Whisk in olive oil in a small stream. Adjust to taste. Combine with greens and toss. Sprinkle almonds over all. Serve.
Based on this overall experience, buying and shopping for produce at a local farmers market, is a lot better than shopping at any other grocery store. Why? Because you know its fresh.
