Autumn's Costa Rica Diaries #3
“To escape and sit quietly on the beach – that’s my idea of paradise.” - Emilia Wickstead

A sand dollar I found on Playa Bandera, taken at the start of sunset.
All of the places I had visited in Costa Rica were phenomenal, and the photos truly do not do the scenery justice. Nonetheless, there was one specific place that stood out to me throughout the whole trip. On July 13th, we traveled to Parrita to the turtle nursery, which was right next to Playa Bandera beach. Before having fun at the beach, I had the opportunity to learn about how much labor goes into the turtle nursery. Getting to watch a simulation of how the sea turtle eggs are transferred was fascinating, as I had no idea it took so much patience and caution. I even had the privilege to hold a sea turtle egg. The egg that I held was ~5 days away from hatching, which is evident from the black spots encircling the egg.

After the educational portion, I explored Playa Bandera, which was breathtaking. The beach had hardly any trash and was absent of people. The sunset that I witnessed on the beach was the most alluring sunset I have ever seen in my lifetime. I chose to take a moment and take in a few breaths of fresh air while closing my eyes and concentrating on the harmonies of the beach. It was a true moment of bliss, and I wish I could go back. To top it off, everyone in the group was given their own fresh coconut from a coconut tree on the property. Coconuts are one of my favorite fruits, so I have had a lot of coconuts in my lifetime. Out of all of the coconuts I have had, that coconut was incomparable. Drinking straight from the coconut was slightly messy, as it was dripping all over my shirt, but I did not mind. After demanding days, the beach day was much needed and cherished. To finish off the day at the beach, I ended up uncovering a sand dollar. There are people who believe a sand dollar signifies freedom, robustness, flexibility, and selecting your own path. I felt the sand dollars significance, as I feel I am finally on the right path in life. The trip made me exhilarated for my future and what’s to come. I daydream for the next day that I am back in Costa Rica.

Pictured, me on playa Bandera drinking from the fresh coconut.

We planted these Almendros (Almond) trees at EcoVida in Bejuco many years ago when we had no choice but to remove some large, rotten trees that were leaning towards our neighbours across the street. We hate cutting trees but when it is necessary we replant. This is the first year that these Almendros are producing and we were so happy to see this squirrel snacking on them. We are hoping the Scarlet Macaws will find them soon too. 🙏😁👍🐿 . . . #squirrel #almond #costarica #puravida #playabejuco #playaesterillos #esterillos #parrita #planttrees (at Playa Bejuco) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCuO2POpGf9/?igshid=jhkrkvjxck79

4.
Hello again friends I have some more to say! Control your excitement.
This weekend, some friends and I decided we wanted to check out Playa Uvita, a beach supposedly shaped like a whale tail. We booked some beds in a hostel, headed to the bus station to get tickets, and packed up our backpacks to leave the next day. Our mama ticas and professors and just about everyone else warned us not to bring any valuables, not to bring much cash, not to bring our original passports, to stay together, and to keep an eye on our bags. Classic tourism advice, but it was your run-of-the-mill beach weekend, we’re adults, we’ve been to beaches, we could handle it.
So on Friday afternoon, we made our way to the bus station, got on the bus, and settled in for the next few hours. About 3.5 hours into the ride, the bus was stopped by police in a little middle-of-nowhere coastal town. The way that I describe it here sounds charming. Please hold for a more accurate description.
A police officer climbed onto our bus, and I assumed he maybe had a dog to check the bus for drugs, maybe they were looking for someone, or maybe it was just a routine stop. Either way, we weren’t doing anything illegal, we’re just some twenty-something Americans trying to get a sunburn. I don’t know. I’m new.
Instead, he said this: “Sacan ustedes los pasaportes. Voy a chequearlos.”
I know what you’re thinking. “Pasaportes? That looks like passports. Didn’t everyone tell you not to bring your passports?” And the answer is yes. Yes it does sound like passports, and yes they did tell us to leave them at home. Wouldn’t want to expose our passports to a questionable and dangerous situation.
After each of us gave the officer either a copy, a photo, or a screenshot of our passport numbers, heard the only other American on the bus say “get them off!” (Thank you sir, united we stand. Viva los Estados Unidos.), the officer pointed the three of us out and took us off the bus. He waved to our bus driver and we watched the bus that had just taken us three hours from home disappeared into a cloud of dust in the countryside to finish the next two hours of the drive without us.
We stood on the side of the road with four fully armed officers for a few minutes while they radioed back and forth to confirm the identities of the three nervous five-foot-something Mysterious Threats To National Security they had just apprehended, effectively Saving The Citizens of Costa Rica From An Unending Era Of Terror, and only after a brief detainment in the police station during which time our identities were, in fact, confirmed and we were not held overnight or deported (a win), we were allowed to continue our trip. Though I will say, our stint in the clink did not feel great. We didn’t have any idea of what would or could happen to us, and the officers spoke to us like we were massive idiots. And maybe we were, but at this point our biggest problem was not the exact numbers of our IQs, but whether they were sufficient to get us the hell out of this town, whether that meant tucking our tails and heading back to San Jose, or forging onward with our trip.
Unfortunately, if you recall our bus had left us high and dry on the side of the road. Uber doesn’t exist anywhere near Parrita, Taxis wouldn’t even consider the 2+ hour drive to Uvita, not that we could trust the drivers or afford it anyway. We likely would have given him all our cash, asked to be taken as close to Uvita as possible, and just been driven in circles until our money ran out. We look pretty easy to take advantage of. Also, it was getting dark.
Walking in the direction of the bus station the officers had vaguely motioned to, we passed zero women, zero children, and only various clusters of whistling, hissing, catcalling, young to middle-aged men. Morale was dropping. I subtly switched my backpack to a very cool (and not at all gigantic, flashing indicator of my lost-tourist status) frontpack.
There was no ticket window at the “bus station” (which turned out to be just a big, poorly-lit bus stop), but after our brief detainment, we felt pretty confident that we could sort out most things. All we wanted to do was leave this town. All we could foresee ourselves doing was sleeping in shifts on the cement bus station bench.
Eventually, after an extreme amount of uncertainty, lots of conversations with bus drivers, a few hours of nervous laughing in the bus station, a man with wild eyes, one shoe, and one pant leg ripped haphazardly into shorts making his third lap around us and getting a little closer every time, the bus we were told to wait for finally pulled up. And it is from that angel bus, at 10pm, that I type this.
I’m excited to get back to you with an actual great experience from this beach weekend, but for now I’m just hoping the beds we reserved in the hostel are still available, and that we can actually find the hostel with no maps, no Uber, and in the pouring rain.
Side note: I think the town we were in was called Parrita, but after googling Parrita, Costa Rica, and finding beautiful photos of palm trees and sandy beaches and resorts, I’m beginning to think we may have been in a town outside of Parrita-- one with one motel, one Costa Rican equivalent of a Dollar Tree-- that I would have taken photos of, but didn’t feel safe taking my phone out, even in the daylight.
Other than that, there’s no bananas.
