The Completeness of Islam: A Multifaceted Way of Life
Tumblr media
Islam is a comprehensive way of life that encompasses all aspects of human existence. From mental health to nature, spirituality, the economy, politics, manners, and family care. Islam’s multifaceted nature and its relevance provides profound guidance and wisdom to Muslims.
Spirituality
Spirituality is at the heart of Islam. The Quran and Hadith provide extensive guidance on developing a deep, personal relationship with Allah.
“Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” (Quran 13:28)
Central to Islamic spirituality is the practice of the five daily prayers (Salah). These prayers are not merely rituals but profound acts of worship that strengthen the connection between the believer and Allah. Praying five times a day at prescribed times creates a rhythm of devotion, reminding Muslims of their purpose and aligning their lives with divine guidance.
“The closest a person is to His Lord is when he is in prostration” (Sahih Muslim).
“The similitude of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Mental Health
Islam recognises the importance of mental health and provides guidance on maintaining psychological well-being. The Quran emphasises patience and reliance on Allah during times of distress:
“Verily, with hardship comes ease” (Quran 94:6).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also encouraged seeking help and making dua (supplication) for mental relief:  “There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Nature
Islam teaches a deep respect for nature and the environment. The Quran frequently references the signs of Allah in the natural world:
“And He is the One Who spread out the earth and placed firm mountains and rivers upon it, and created fruits of every kind in pairs. He covers the day with night. Surely in this are signs for those who reflect.” (Quran 13:3).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) highlights the importance of caring for the environment:
“If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (Sadaqah) for him” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Economy
Islamic economic principles promote justice, fairness, and welfare. The prohibition of usury (interest), in order to prevent the extortion of others and for the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer, is one example:
“Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest” (Quran 2:275).
Zakat (a wealth tax given to charity) is another pillar of Islam, aimed at redistributing wealth to those in need:  “And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves — you will find it with Allah”(Quran 2:110).
Politics & Justice
Islamic governance is based on justice and the welfare of the people. The Quran states:
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives” (Quran 4:135)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided an example of leadership based on compassion and justice:
“The best of rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who pray for you and you pray for them” (Sahih Muslim)
Manners
Islam places great emphasis on good manners and etiquette. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
“The best among you are those who have the best manners and character” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
The Quran instructs believers to speak kindly and avoid harsh words:  “Worship none but Allah; be kind to parents, relatives, orphans and the needy; speak kindly to people; establish prayer; and pay Zakat”* (Quran 2:83).
Family Care
Family is the cornerstone of Islamic society. The Quran and Hadith provide detailed guidance on maintaining family bonds and treating family members with kindness and respect.
“And We have commanded people to ˹honour˺ their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years. So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.”* (Quran 31:14)
“The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family” (Sunan Ibn Majah).
Education
Education is highly valued in Islam, both for men and women. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,  “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim” (Sunan Ibn Majah).
The Quran encourages the pursuit of knowledge, in fact, the first words revealed from the Quran was:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created” (Quran 96:1)
These verses among others were the fuel to the fantastic strides achieved by Muslims in the past in the field of science, astronomy, mathematics, medicine and much more, and continue to provide inspiration for Muslims today.
Social Justice
Social justice is a fundamental aspect of Islam. The Quran advocates for the rights of the oppressed and marginalised:
“O believers! Stand firm for Allah and bear true testimony. Do not let the hatred of a people lead you to injustice. Be just! That is closer to righteousness. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do.” (Quran 5:8)
Health and Hygiene
Islam emphasises health and hygiene, recognising them as vital components of a healthy life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Cleanliness is half of faith” (Sahih Muslim).
The Quran also highlights the importance of consuming lawful and pure food:
“O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship” (Quran 2:172)
Charity and Community Support
Charity is not only encouraged but mandated in Islam (except those in need of it). Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) are means to support those in need and promote social welfare:  “The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies ˹the reward even more˺ to whoever He wills. For Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.” (Quran 2:261).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,  “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity” (Tirmidhi).
The completeness of Islam is evident in its comprehensive guidance covering all facets of life. From promoting mental health and environmental care to fostering spirituality, economic justice, political integrity, good manners, strong family bonds, the pursuit of education, social justice, health and hygiene, charitable deeds and much more. Islam offers a holistic approach to living a balanced and fulfilling life. Its teachings are timeless and applicable to everyone of us.

Question regarding the cockroaches: are they clean? I've always understood bugs to be fairly dirty, but given how you handle them it seems that isn't the case? Are these ones different because they're handled regularly?
These cockroaches are artificially bred in closed conditions and do not come into contact with anything outside their container.
Cockroaches that live in an open environment can indeed be unsafe since they come into contact with unpredictable substances. The main danger is caused by cockroaches that feed on human waste. Cockroaches, which prefer to feed on waste, are capable of carrying pathogens such as hepatitis, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal infections, pneumonia, meningitis and others. In addition to viruses and microorganisms, cockroaches can carry the eggs of helminths (worms) and amoebas on their bodies. The reason for their unsafety is that they come into contact with and eat completely different human waste and animal carrion. You cannot know what exactly this or that cockroach came into contact with.
Unlike this situation, the living conditions of my insects are completely controlled only by me.
To keep insects, I use either a substrate that I buy in the store or cardboard egg cartons (cockroaches love to hide in them). For their food, I use a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, and supplements from pet stores.
Cockroaches also love lichens, which can be found on tree branches (and lichens are very useful for them). But before giving them, I first freeze these branches in the freezer to destroy all possible living organisms that could be there.
Of course, I collect these twigs in the forest, and not near the city or in garden plots, because trees growing in an urban environment can be treated with chemicals against insects. And then I just risk killing my cockroaches.
I also monitor their condition and appearance so that they look healthy.
Some time ago I had a bad experience with excessively high humidity in their container and part of the colony was affected by mold, which could be visually observed on their shells. This mold is safe for humans, but insects can die from it. So I had to save the colony.
In addition to completely cleaning the container and contents, I needed to do something about the mold on the cockroaches themselves. My good friend was visiting me at the time and I asked her for help in this strange matter.
I am very glad to have such a friend to whom I can say “Code red, we urgently need to wash the cockroaches’ asses!” and hear in response “Ok, give me 5 minutes to finish my tea, and let’s go!”.
As a result, we first washed them under ordinary water in bulk, then wiped the shell of each individual cockroach with a cotton pad soaked in a disinfecting solution and the mold was defeated.
But I repeat: this mold was safe for humans. Thus, if you keep insects in closed containers and they do not come into contact with or eat anything from the outside world without undergoing treatment, then all ok.
What can create difficulties is a possible allergy to cockroach chitin. Moreover, this allergy can manifest itself only to some types of cockroaches, but not to others.
This allergy is treated with conventional remedies prescribed by a dermatologist. But of course, you should stop contact with the type of cockroaches that you have allergy (or protect the respiratory tract, mucous membranes, and not allowing contact with the skin).
In general, the rules for handling domestic insects are approximately the same as for pets. Some may be allergic to cats or dogs, others may not. It is safe from the point of view of disease to handle domestic rats or hamsters, but it is clearly not worth handling rats or hamsters that live in the wild¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hericium americanum
-Commonly known as Bear's Head or Bear's Tooth-
Where: Northeastern US & Canada
Grows in deciduous/hardwood forests from living and decaying trees. Typically from oak and birchwood.
When: August-November
My friends and I found this little guy in September at Molly's Falls State Park, located in Cabot and Marshfield, Vermont.
There are many ways to consume this edible mushroom, but since we had been camping for weeks, due to our lack of resources we simply just intensely fried them in olive oil with salt and pepper seasoning. Nonetheless, it was super delicious!
----------
Appearance:
Bear's Head are relatively large mushrooms that grow 15-30 cm in diameter (6-11 inches) in compact clusters. It looks like thick, tufty, and smooth icicles or teeth that branch downwards. Bear's Head mushrooms are initially white in color when young and become more yellow as they age.
This mushroom releases spores through its "teeth," rather than gills or pores.
Taste:
The Bear's Tooth mushroom is known for having a tender, mild seafood-like taste, most akin to a slight crab or lobster flavor. It is best to pick these mushrooms while they are young and white because it becomes more bitter as the mushroom ages. When cooked, Bear's Tooth becomes brown in color.
This mushroom contains fiber, protein, antioxidants, and vitamin D!
You should ALWAYS cook wild mushrooms for the safest outcome, even if they are known to be edible. Bear's Head works well with sautéing, frying, and even baking.
I have heard that these mushrooms work really well as crab or lobster substitutes. Try them in crab cakes, seafood tacos, and soups! Its fishy, meaty flavor pairs well with butter, garlic, shallots, and lemon.
Medicinal Uses:
It is believed (by tribes in the northern parts of North America) that Bear's Head mushrooms, as well as other Hericium, can be utilized to treat bleeding wounds in their dried or powdered form, due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
There has been some research that shows that certain properties of Hericium can stimulate the synthesis of the NGF protein, which aids with improving memory and mood, and prevents brain cells from dying. This means that it can help prevent or combat Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
In Japan, clinical tests have shown that Hericium's antibacterial properties helped with the treatment of gastrointestinal issues such as stomach ulcers, chronic gastritis, Crohn's Disease, and esophageal cancer.
Of course, these mushrooms do not substitute medical attention and prescriptions. Further research is needed, and these studies only show that Hericium helps with treating symptoms--it is not a cure.
----------
** Bear's Head/Tooth is commonly confused to be synonymous with the Lion's Mane mushroom. However, these mushrooms are not the same species but are very closely related in the genus Hericium.
Bear's Head has longer branching fruiting bodies than the Lion's Mane. It looks more like melting candlewax whereas Lion's Mane looks more like a pom pom. The Coral Tooth Mushroom is also closely related, but as in the name, it has much shorter branches that look very much like corals.
Here is a good chart by the website Real Mushrooms:

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Surah Al-Nahl Ayah 68-69
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
16:68 And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: "Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they (humans) erect.''
16:69 "Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the routes that your Lord made easy (for you).''
There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colors, in which there is a cure for men.
There is indeed a sign in that for people who reflect.
In the Bee and its Honey there is Blessing and a Lesson
Allah says,
And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: "Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they (humans) erect. Then, eat of all fruits,
What is meant by inspiration here is guidance.
The bee is guided to make its home in the mountains, in trees and in structures erected by man.
The bee's home is a solid structure, with its hexagonal shapes and interlocking forms there is no looseness in its combs. Then Allah decrees that the bee will have permission to eat from all fruits and to follow the ways which Allah has made easy for it, wherever it wants to go in the vast spaces of the wilderness, valleys and high mountains. Then each bee comes back to its hive without swerving to the right or left, it comes straight back to its home where its offspring and honey are. It makes wax from its wings, and regurgitates honey from its mouth, and lays eggs from its rear, then the next morning it goes out to the fields again.
and follow the routes of your Lord made easy (for you), Qatadah and Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said:
"This means, in an obedient way,''
understanding it to be a description of the route of migration.
Ibn Zayd said that this is like the Ayah:
And We have subdued them for them so that some they may ride and some they may eat. )36:72(
He said:
"Do you not see that they move the bees' home from one land to another, and the bees follow them!''
The first opinion is clearly the more likely, as it describes the routes that the bees follow, i.e., `follow these routes as they are easy for you.'
This was stated by Mujahid.
Ibn Jarir said that both opinions are correct.
There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colors, wherein is healing for men.
meaning, honey, that is white, yellow, red, or of other good colors, depending on the different things that the bees eat.
in which there is a cure for men.
meaning there is a cure in honey for diseases that people suffer from.
Some of those who spoke about the study of Prophetic medicine said that;
if (Allah) had said, `in which there is the cure for men', then it would be the remedy for all diseases,
but He said, `in which there is a cure for men', meaning that it is the right treatment for every "cold'' disease, because it is "hot'', and a disease should be treated with its opposite.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded in their Sahihs from Qatadah from Abu Al-Mutawakkil Ali bin Dawud An-Naji from Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri that;
a man came to the Messenger of Allah and said, "My brother is suffering from diarrhea.''
He said (Give him honey to drink).
The man went and gave him honey, then he came back and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I gave him honey to drink, and he only got worse.''
The Prophet said,
Go and give him honey to drink.
So he went and gave him honey, then he came back and said, "O Messenger of Allah! it only made him worse.''
The Prophet said,
Allah speaks the truth and your brother's stomach is lying. Go and give him honey to drink.
So he went and gave him honey, and he recovered.''
It is reported in the Two Sahihs from A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah used to like sweet things and honey.
This is the wording of Al-Bukhari, who also reported in his Sahih from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said:
Healing is to be found in three things:
• the cut made by the cupper, or
• drinking honey, or
• in branding with fire (cauterizing),
but I have forbidden my Ummah to use branding.
There is indeed a sign in that for people who reflect.
meaning in the fact that Allah inspires this weak little creature to travel through the vast fields and feed from every kind of fruit, then gather it for wax and honey, which are some of the best things, in this is a sign for people who think about the might and power of the bee's Creator Who causes all of this to happen.
From this they learn that He is the Initiator, the All-Powerful, the All-Wise, the All-Knowing, the Most Generous, the Most Merciful.

Pruning! It’s part of the key skill set for any gardener. While plants will grow without it, pruning is a valuable technique for encouraging new growth, shaping particular forms and sizes, increasing yields and preventing diseases.
TOOLS:
Before Jerry even begins, he takes an inventory of the tools he will use for the job. Different tools are used for different parts of the tree in different ways, namely
Secateurs: fine work on soft to semi-hard material. Great for thinning foliage or new shoots, but avoid trying to get through thicker wood
Loppers: Jerry describes these as halfway between secateurs and a saw. They’re a bit heavier and physically harder to use than the secateurs, but can make short work of thicker branches (by use of a ratchet mechanism) that seccies wouldn’t even scratch
Folding hand saw: “Small and narrow, it’s nimble and can fit into confined spaces like a congested tree crown” Will make a precise cut on hard wood
Extension tree pruner: a lopper on the end of a long pole, to be used in the same way as the lopper for branches out of reach
Extension tree saw: Similar to the folding saw, but on the end of a long pole. Used in the same way, but for limbs and branches out of reach from the pruner
Bow saw: Necessary for getting through the thickest branches, but Jerry notes the size and sawing motion “requires more clearance”.
JERRY’S 4 STEP PLAN TO TAKE BACK YOUR LIFE:
Looking at a tree that’s become a mess can be overwhelming. Where to begin? What stays and what goes? Fortunately, Jerry has a 4 step patented methodology that makes it easy. This approach not only works for mangoes, it can be applies to any fruit tree you need to prune.
1. Identify structural branches and work back from these. Structural branches are the largest branches that hold up the trees canopy. We want to keep these to preserve the architecture and overall shape and integrity of the tree, so it’s important to be aware of them before we launch into a frenzy
2. Remove any dead, diseased or dying wood. These are the first priority and should be pruned with impunity. Dead wood can be identified by scratching the bark with a fingernail; live material will be green underneath, dead will be grey. Look for signs of visible signs of decay like borer holes, snapped branches, fungus, scratched or split bark.
3. Crossing branches. Branches that cross over or near to each other can rub in the wind. This gradually shears off the protective bark, creating a window for infections to get inside the tree. Preventatively removing the branch prevents the friction.
4. Clearing out the interior of the tree in this way also has another benefit; boosting airflow through the tree. This helps to prevent diseases, as many fungus pathogens prefer damp, still and shaded leaves.
Work on the crown and canopy. Now that you’ve done the immediate first aid, it’s time to work on the overall crown of the tree. Jerry says it’s important to maintain fruit trees at “a safe picking height”, to prevent accidents when harvesting fruit or doing occasional pruning.
AFTER PRUNING CARE
Jerry warns to avoid any after-pruning wound treatments or preparations, as these only “seal disease into the plant and impair natural healing”.
Now that Jerry’s gone to all the trouble of pruning these trees, he wants to make sure they’re well prepared for the rebound. The grass underneath is vigorous, and would be competing for valuable water and nutrients. Jerry will brush-cut it to keep it down.
We can expect this tree to respond within the year, usually with a significant fruit set. Jerry might just check back in to pick up a box of mangoes or two.
Pruning a fruit tree needn’t be a daunting task. With the right tools and following some simple methodology, it can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. And the results will quite literally be the fruits of your labour.

Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum, Solanaceae - Nightshade Family)
Native to Mesoamerica though via colonization tomatoes became a signature ingredient in European cuisines (eg. Italian). Modern cuisines worldwide, in fact, would look much different if Indigenous Americans were unaware of the brilliance of the tomato.
Interestingly, the fruits were previously shunned and thought to be deadly poisonous by Europeans and American settlers. This scenario has lent itself to the term 'tomato effect.'
Coined in the Journal of the American Medical Association 27 years ago, the tomato effect describes the rejection of highly efficacious therapies by the medical establishment because they happen to go against the prevailing conventional wisdom.
Imported from the New World, “By [the year] 1560, the tomato was becoming a staple of the continental European diet…[A]t the same time it was actively shunned in North America [for literally centuries]… The reason…is simple: they were poisonous. Everyone knew they were poisonous, at least everyone in North America. It was obvious.”
Examples of this tomato effect—a slavish devotion to orthodoxy—are mentioned in medicine. For example, ignoring the successful use of this plant in the treatment of gout for a thousand years before modern medicine “discovered” it was the drug colchicine. Aspirin was also ignored for almost 3,000 years of successful use as willow tree bark extract.
Tomatoes used to grow as wild as weeds in Central and South America. The Aztecs and Incas were among the first known to use the plant in their food.
They have an unmistakeable bright cheery taste which fits into the savory & umami flavor categories. They are also very cooling and hydrating in nature, which allows it to harmonize perfectly with the sunny days of its growing season. A simple taste of tomatoes captures the essence of such days. It's no wonder why it is one of the most consumed "vegetables" in the United States, even critical to many fast food dishes.
The leaves of the tomato have also been feared, even into our current times. But many have eaten & cooked with it, though it would be unwise to consume the leaves in excessive portions, which is the same for any one leafy green. Due to the content of antinutrients in leafy greens combined with the varied ability to handle these antinutrients (eg. oxalates), which is thought to change according with one's genetics & gut microbiome status, eating an assortment of different greens is a general nutritional recommendation.
The tomato fruit is a notable source of Vitamins C, E, and K, potassium, and lycopene (an antioxidant, and thus gives tomato the reputation of aiding prevention against inflammation-related diseases and imbalances). On a similar vein, it is brewed as tea, though very rarely, to bring relief to cold & flu symptoms.
Nutrient absorption of the tomato is thought to be improved once cooked or processed in other ways which softens the cell walls. The combination of tomatoes and olive oil may also been an intuitive realization of increased nutrient absorption.
The fruit is a main ingredient in the following: sauces like marinara, ketchup, salsa, pico de gallo, tomato paste, tomato juice, tomato soup, gazpacho, pizza, ratatouille, paella, tagine, bravas sauce, shakshuka, fried green tomatoes, jollof rice, tomato galettes, butter chicken, tikka masala, saneyet batates, burgers, etc.
Its flowers tend to be small and yellow. The flower's energies have been captured in vibrational flower essences. They're thought to hold a 'warrior energy,' with qualities of mental strength and endurance. It has been reported to aid with nightmares, depression due to unhappiness with one's weight, dentist's office anxiety, pets with uncontrollable fear or a history of traumatic abuse, and addiction management.

Earl Grey Tea: with its many polyphenols and antioxidants, may also support weight loss. It has bergamot extract, which is a type of orange that is found in the Mediterranean. Bergamot contains phytochemicals  and other components that help in boosting metabolism and helping to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the stomach (source)
Pu-erh Tea: Increases Metabolism, Digestion: In China, this is known as medicinal tea, but is apparently great for a hangover cure as well. Pu-erh increases metabolism, lowers blood pressure, and cholesterol, improves digestion and detoxifies the body. There are varying ways to brew Pu-erh tea.
Oolong Tea: can burn up to 157% more fat than green tea. Oolong tea increases metabolism, burns fat, and block fat absorption. Besides weight loss, it is also beneficial to type 2 diabetics, patients with heart diseases, reduces high blood pressure, tooth decay and improves your skin, thanks to the antioxidants. Some studies have found that oolong tea may reduce cholesterol and increases plasma adiponectin levels.
Rose Tea: Having a therapeutic effect on the body it also assists the body with clear toxins, beautifying the skin and also contains vitamins A, B3, C, D and E and is known to fight infections. It also prevents constipation and helps to lose weight.
Green Tea: Research has found that the chemical EGCG in green tea speeds up the body’s metabolism, and is responsible for helping individuals burn close to 70 calories per day. Green tea is also linked with significantly lowering blood sugar and raising levels of antioxidants within the body. It is believed that the antioxidant catechins in green tea boost metabolism and helps to burn fat
White Tea: made from the youngest leaves and buds, white tea has been found to reduce fluoride exposure compared to other teas. White tea has also been to be more effective in fighting germs than green tea. This tea stops the generation of new fat cells and at the same time stimulates the burning of fat. White tea is very delicate and can only stand a couple of minutes with much cooler water temperature than that of other teas.
Peppermint Tea: Peppermint tea speeds up digestions and thus helps you burn more calories
Star Anise Tea: the fruit of a small evergreen tree, can be used in the treatment of digestive troubles such as upset stomach, diarrhea, and nausea.

You know what...
The problem with this is the western perspective.
It took me a moment to recognize it, but guess what?
This is basically the Mexica Empire and Tenochtitlan at its height. It was Tenochtitlan just before the fall.
And we have récords of it.
Tenochtitlan was a paradise city, a place where the poorest peasant lived as a king compared to anyone in Europe.
Cortez got blindsided by greed and the opulence that Tenochtitlan had.
It was a city in the middle of a lake, with floating gardens able to feed the entire city. Gold was not exactly a luxury, and silver was abundant. Copper was used on the daily life as both tools and polished like gold to be worn like a peasants accessory.
The warrior class was feared and decadent. By accounts of the very Spanish people, the obsidian blades were sharper than any of their Spanish steel counterparts.
There was virtually no poverty because mesoamerica has the perfect weather to have trees giving fruit all year. And you could just stretch your hand and pick some fruit and eat fruit.
There was running water and aqueducts that allowed thr whole populace to bath twice a day. The rivers were pristine and polluting them was punished by the death penalty.
There were roads maintained from one coast to the other and the empire reached all the way to the central America. They had trade with South American Incas and trade and clashes with nomad civilizations to the north.
It was a bustling empire on a "Golden Age", and as you say, busting at the seams, collapsing. Rot eating at the heart.
Here is the thing.
The mexica empire had temples and castles and all of these engineering marvels sitting at the center of the lake. A whole sustainable city at the center of the lake.
Unsiegeable.
Unsiegeable by any of their many enemies.
They could simply lift their bridges and shoot any boats approaching from the edge of the city.
The mexicas were a warring civilization, they had flower wars where they caught people for sacrifices or as slaves. But yeah, even the slaves lived in a better life than in many other places of the world.
Because they needed to capture them alive they developed many health treatments.
Even treating ptsd.
But war is war, and war creates enemies, specially if you're sacrificing their leaders every time you wage a war.
So, the Tlaxcalan people took the chance and joined hands with Cortez invading forces.
They sieged the city from the edge of the lake with cannons that could reach the edges of the city. And from within, Tenochtitlan literally began to rot from the plagues brought by the Spanish people.
It wasn't the Spanish that defeated the Mexica, it was the diseases, their own defenses working against them. It was the Tlaxcalan, the oppressed neighbors sick of the status quo using the dozen cannons that the Spanish had in their boats before Cortez sunk them.
The empire didn't break at the seams, it rotted from within and was burned from without.
After tenochtitlan, the mightiest, cleanest and one of the biggest city of the world at time fell. Well... the tlaxcalan became Spanish citizens and the golden age of the Spanish empire began, while the dark ages of the native Mexican people began.
a lot of stories will take a so-called "golden age" period and go "hey it wasn't actually that good, in fact it kind of sucked for basically everyone but a few guys who benefitted from exploiting the rest" and i can respect that because i love a good exposure of the bones the system is built on, but the thing is i also kind of want more stories where it really was that good and just as horrifying for it. empires bursting at the seams with opulence, where gold really does run as freely as blood in the gem-encrusted streets. warriors clad in shining armour, with weapons so bright and sharp they hurt to look at. every day is overflowing with possibility, every night a party where people gorge themselves sick on sheer excess and still return for more. even the poorest man in the region lives in comparative luxury to his poverty-stricken peers elsewhere. and none of it is sustainable. it's collapsing under its own weight and the rot eating at its heart, its bottomless hunger barely kept at bay. it's a society that isn't built to last or be outlived.

Seed Storage Impact on Germination and Survival of Syzygium polycephaloides
Tumblr media
Abstract
S. polycephaloides or lipote is native in the Philippines that needs protection and conservation due to its usefulness and is considered as vulnerable and endangered. However, no studies were conducted about the effect of seed storage in germination and survival of S. polycephaloides. The study aimed to address this gap and study the impact of different duration of seed storage on the percent germination, percent germinative energy and percent survival of S. polycephaloides. Single mother tree of lipote served as seed source and collected four times with 10 days interval (T0 – 0 day storage), (T1 – 10 days storage) (T2 – 20 days storage) (T3 – 30 days storage) and sown it simultaneously. One-way ANOVA and Duncan Multiple Range Test post hoc analysis were used to assess the difference among treatments in terms of germination and percent survival indicators. Analysis on the seed storage revealed that there is a significant difference among treatments applied to S. polycephaloides seeds in terms of percent germination and percent survival. Specifically, S. polycephaloides seeds under T2 (20 days of storage) had the highest germination percentage of 93.12% followed by T3 (30 days storage) with 92.5%, T1 (10 days storage) with 81.8%, and T0 (control) with 78.13%. S. polycephaloides seeds under T3 (30 days storage) obtained the highest percent survival of 98.57% compared to T2 (20 days storage), T0 (control), and T1 (10 days storage) obtained 97.27%, 89.65%, and 87.04%, respectively. Both T2 and T3 are significantly higher as compared to the control (T0) (p<.049). Longer storage of seeds appeared to improved germination of S. polycephaloides. The results can be served as basis for future reforestation project and future researches aiming to improve the seed physiological condition of S. polycephaloides under seed storage.

Introduction
Today, the demand of functional food has increase significantly in recent years. Functional foods are ones that offer advantages to health beyond merely meeting nutritional needs. They contain physiologically active ingredients that aid in lowering chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, and other illnesses.
Syzygium polycephaloides is indigenous to the Philippines. Its berry can be juiced and turned into wine or eaten ripe and raw. The antioxidant content of S. polycephaloides is similar to vitamin E (Santiago et al., 2007). In local communities, indigenous fruit trees are important because it serves as food, nutrition and income. However, out of 300 edible fruit tree species in the Philippines only few are cultivated commercially and many others are still remaining underutilized (Dulay et al., 2022).
Storage of seeds helps to preserve its viability because there is a period of time between planting and harvesting. Some of the farmers, researchers, plantation owners used seed storage to recalcitrant, intermediate and orthodox seeds for the purpose of maintaining the seed in good physical and physiological condition from the time they are harvested until the time they are planted. Many Syzygium species like S. cuminii, S. jambos and S. polycephaloides are considered recalcitrant to intermediate seeds wherein these seeds are sensitive to drying and can be kept for several months in low temperature (Abbas et al., 2003).
According to Sultana et al. (2016), there are some various elements that influence seed quality that includes temperature, insects, and all other biotic and abiotic components. Seed stored in low temperature germinate higher compared to the seeds stored in high temperature since high temperature increase the respiration rate and enzymes activity resulting the overhaul of food reserves before the seeds germinate that leads to seed decrease vigor and physical quality seed (Mbofung, 2012). Lack of availability of quality seeds leads to a decline in production due to low percent germination, poor development of seedlings and reduce adaptation in the field (Jyoti and Malik, 2013). Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the percent germination, percent germinative energy and percent survival of S. polycephaloides as affected by different seed storage duration.

The Power of Citric Acid: A Comprehensive Guide to Its Uses and Benefits
Citric acid is a natural compound found in many fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges. It's known for its tangy taste and has a wide variety of uses in food, cleaning, and even skincare. At Grape Tree, we offer high-quality citric acid for your everyday needs, making it a versatile and essential product for households and businesses alike.
What is Citric Acid?
Citric acid is an organic acid naturally present in citrus fruits. It is what gives these fruits their sour taste. Beyond its natural presence in fruits, citric acid is also produced commercially by fermenting sugars. This form of Citric Acid is what you'll find in most products, including the 125g citric acid offered by Grape Tree.
Common Uses of Citric Acid
Citric acid is a multi-purpose ingredient with many applications in food, cleaning, and personal care. Let’s explore some of the common uses of citric acid.
1. Food Preservative
One of the most popular uses of citric acid is as a preservative. It helps to extend the shelf life of food by preventing spoilage. This is because citric acid lowers the pH of foods, making it difficult for bacteria to grow. It is commonly found in canned fruits, jams, jellies, and even certain dairy products.
2. Flavour Enhancer
Citric acid is also used to add a tangy flavour to foods. It’s a common ingredient in soft drinks, candies, and some baked goods. Citric acid enhances the overall flavour profile of food without being overpowering, making it an ideal choice for adding a subtle tartness.
3. Cleaning Agent
Many people use citric acid as a natural cleaning agent. Its acidic properties make it an effective cleaner, especially for removing limescale, soap scum, and other tough stains. Citric acid can be mixed with water to create a simple yet effective cleaner for your kitchen, bathroom, and household appliances like coffee machines and kettles.
4. Skincare and Beauty
Citric acid is often found in skincare products as it helps to balance the pH of the skin. It is also used in exfoliating scrubs because of its ability to remove dead skin cells, revealing fresher, brighter skin underneath. If you're into DIY beauty treatments, citric acid can be used in homemade face masks and scrubs for a refreshing boost.
5. Baking
In baking, citric acid works as a leavening agent when combined with baking soda. This creates a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas, which helps dough rise and become fluffy. It’s a great ingredient to keep in your kitchen for making bread, cakes, and even soft pretzels.
Health Benefits of Citric Acid
While citric acid is commonly used in everyday products, it also has several health benefits. Below are some of the ways it can contribute to better health.
1. Improved Digestion
Citric acid helps to enhance the digestive process by stimulating stomach acid production, which can aid in breaking down food more efficiently. This makes it easier for your body to absorb essential nutrients.
2. Kidney Stone Prevention
Citric acid has been shown to help prevent the formation of kidney stones. It does this by binding to calcium, which helps to stop the formation of calcium crystals that can lead to stones. Drinking citrus fruit juices that are rich in citric acid, such as lemon juice, can be a natural way to reduce the risk of kidney stones.
3. Boosts Antioxidant Levels
Citric acid also acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. This can reduce oxidative stress, which has been linked to chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
How to Use Citric Acid at Home
There are plenty of simple ways to incorporate citric acid into your daily life. Here are some practical uses for citric acid that you can try at home.
1. Making Homemade Lemonade
If you're out of fresh lemons, you can still make lemonade by mixing citric acid with water and sugar. This is a quick and easy way to get that refreshing lemony taste without the need for actual lemons.
2. DIY Cleaning Spray
To make your own eco-friendly cleaner, mix a few teaspoons of citric acid with water in a spray bottle. You can use this solution to clean surfaces, remove hard water stains, or even clean your dishwasher.
3. Refreshing Bath Bombs
Citric acid is a key ingredient in bath bombs. When mixed with baking soda and other ingredients, it creates a fizzy reaction when dropped in water. Making your own bath bombs is a fun way to enjoy a relaxing, spa-like experience at home.
4. Preserving Homemade Jams
If you enjoy making homemade jams or preserves, citric acid can be used to balance the sweetness and act as a natural preservative. This will ensure your jams have a longer shelf life without the need for artificial additives.
