So. Um.
Him.
...he multiplies. God, he really MULTIPLIES.
I mean, I made a joke once that Westergaards are reproducing by fission, but... jeez.
(just to inform - he is not Westergaard. But he looks like one.)
Well, Mr. Thord. Welcome in my fanfic. I have someone who would love to meet you.

I made a joke a while back involving Hans and Thord comparing them to the scene from "The Boys" between Soldier Boy and Homelander and I couldn't resist making an edit.
For those unfamiliar with Thord, he is basically a member of a royal family who believes that the royal family of Arendelle stole the power that his family should have, and in addition to just land and influence, he believes that he should also have the ice magic that Elsa has. Thord's goal in life is to obtain the throne of Arendelle and Elsa's magical power, and his last appearance is him vowing to get revenge on Anna and Elsa. In short, in Thord's dreams he gains elemental powers and invades Arendelle to expel Elsa and Anna and take the throne for himself, as he considers himself the true heir to the kingdom… This is basically the synopsis of 90% of the fanfics about Hans' return as a villain, although Hans himself never wanted magical powers, and except for revenge for a wounded ego, it would make much more sense for him to simply try his plan to obtain a kingdom away from Arendelle. For those who don't know "The Boys": Soldier Boy is a superhero from the World War II era and Homelander is his son and practically a clone of him being created to surpass him in every way. So in the case of "The Boys" the phrase is literal, in the case of Hans and Thord it's hard not to see the repetition of themes or the prince's fans even involuntarily making Hans a literal copy of Thord which becomes comical since it's hard to believe that Thord wasn't inspired by him thematically and physically if we take into account Hans' initial designs where he is basically a red-haired version of Thord.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
When I think back to the beginnings of my novel, which was initially just a little ficlet about four years ago, around Anna's birthday, I realise that it was all born out of the single idea that for some reason Elsa no longer had any magical powers. It's also a fact that I was terrified of writing it at the time, so I asked on Tumblr who of the experienced writers there wanted to take my idea and write a multi-chapter fanfic. But no one was willing to do it and so I had to make the decision to try it myself - without any experience for a project of this size. At the time, I didn't even realise how big it would be!
To cut a long story short, I am glad that I dared to take this step!
But it was a long road - with many setbacks at the beginning. First i had to learn how to write and motivate myself repeatedly. There were so many days when I was just a finger's breadth away from simply giving up. If it wasn't for some fans and writers who encouraged me, gave me lots of tips and convinced me that my expectations for reactions from the Frozen fandom were a bit too high. Fortunately, I had also found a first beta reader from these ranks who helped me with the production of the first two chapters.
Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank @fericita-s and @the-spaztic-fantastic once again. Also a big thank you to @the-sky-is-awake for the encouraging words during my very first attempt to write a fanfic (which I did not finish after the release of Frozen II, by the way).
Also, at that time, an anonymous reader who — to this day — doesn't have a Tumblr account, wanted to help me and who later turned out to be my most loyal fan and beta reader and became a real long-time friend. Our chats and planning — first on Twitter, later on Discord — are so extensive that it would fill more than an entire book. But we also talked about many private things. By the way, the idea of including music in my chapters came solely from him. The music later helped me a lot with my writing and thinking and it was not uncommon for me to have tears in my eyes when reading the finished chapters.
Thank you, HeinrichVSA, for the many years we worked together, for your friendship and, above all, for always believing in me. Until today! You've always cheered me up in bad times and motivated me to keep going and never give up. Thank you also for your advice on historical matters and for contributing some scenes in some chapters yourself and for creating the OC character Oswald Monrad and his daughter Stella for me. THANK YOU for everything!
Without the motivation provided by the comments from my loyal readers, I would probably have given up long ago, but the consistently positive feedback from them — even I always asked for criticism at the end of each chapter — has really given me immense pleasure and encouragement. With your comments, you all confirmed time and again that I must have done something "right" with 'The Broken Bridge'.
So many thanks to: @true--north @dronning-formynder05 @annaofthenorthernlights @karma26 (up to the beginning of part four, where the adult content began). You have made my many days sweeter and thank you for staying loyal to me all these years. The novel would not have been possible without you! Outside Tumblr I have to thank especially to lolita @_lola_lola on Twitter aka X, chainzsw on Discord (alias Winterdust--76 on Tumblr) and Kongelig_Historian on reddit. Many thanks also to HARU @xlayers for the commissioned wonderful fanart to many of my chapters.
Thanks also to all the Disney book and comic authors who have been a source of many of my ideas and have enriched the story. Especially when it comes to certain characters, such as Thord from "Lur Thief" by Georgia Ball, who unfortunately never received any recognition from Disney for her extraordinary comic book story, nor permission to write a planned sequel. Unfortunately! In my novel, I have tried to do my best to realise this and give Thord a well-deserved comeback as a villain.
But none of this would have been possible without the magic of the Frozen films, and all Frozen fans and fanfic writers would agree with me. We all love this magical world and would love to live in it. But at least in our stories we can bring this dreamland to life.
Let's all hope that the two planned Frozen sequels open up as big a world and as many new possibilities for new stories as the first two films did.

I've already written two fanfics where Hans returns:
the first takes place on the eve of KristAnna's wedding and Hans infiltrates Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest with the intention of causing chaos in the relationship of the two peoples to show that Anna is a terrible queen, he literally uses disguises stealing clothes and throwing stones in the stores... the focus of the fanfic is comedy, although there are some comments involving the prejudice that the tribe suffers.
the second fanfic he invades Arendelle on purpose at the time that Elsa was traveling far away (she does not appear in the fanfic), his plan is to kill Anna during a crisis that is happening in the kingdom involving the acceptance of the population of Arendelle with the presence of the Northuldras (I like this theme) that it's on the brink of sparking an uprising or civil war (this fanfic has a lot of political themes including Anna at the end questioning the idea of making Arendelle a democracy). But when Hans explains his reasons for being there is the weakest point of the entire fanfic since I really didn't know his reasons for wanting revenge in a serious plot, and even Anna ends up mocking how little sense it makes for the Hans' plan in F1 (which remain the same in this fanfic) involving becoming king and proving himself worthy to humiliate his relatives. Wouldn't it be much simpler for him to just ignore Arendelle and try the same thing with another place he didn't know? In the mobile game "Disney Magic Kingdoms" this is what he tries to do by literally repeating the same F1 plan, but because he used Marshmallow to create the Eternal Winter and pretends to be the savior, he ends up attracting the sisters and everything goes wrong. If I had seen this participation before maybe this fanfic would be different... or more likely not since this fanfic is based on a dream I had.
For me these two fanfics ended up showing how little sense the character's return (with some importance in the plot) makes thinking about his motivations in F1 or any other material he appears after "Frozen Fever" whether canon or not. So I really prefer a new character with some similar stereotypes (like Thord and Runeard who I nickname "sons of Hans"), but with different goals instead of doing a 90º turn on the character that for me already had his arc with the sisters completed, or erase half of what Hans was just to generate something new with him, but still enjoy the effect he has on Anna & Co, and especially in cheap fanservice like what happened to Palpatine in “Star Wars IX”.
Should Hans Make a Return?
One of the burning questions that some have for Frozen 3 is if Prince Hans, the twist villain from Frozen, should return in the next film. He was absent in Frozen 2, only mentioned in passing, which was met with indifference from most Frozen fans, but disappointment from fans of the character who believed he was getting a redemption arc.
This idea originally stemmed from an interview with Hans' voice actor Santino Fontana who had hinted at the possibility that he may return. He mentions that the writers told him that they want to bring him back and redeem him. You can see this interview here, the Frozen segment lasts from approx. 15:35 - 19:35.
However, F2 had Elsa say that Hans is an irredeemable monster, and the songwriters had once compared him to a politician they don't like - giving off the impression that this wasn't actually considered, or the idea was scrapped.
The option has once again presented itself for Frozen 3, and I wanted to discuss the possibility and if he should even make a return.
Hans After Frozen
Hans' last film appearance was Frozen Fever in 2015, where we see him shoveling horse manure before being hit by Elsa's giant snowball.
Later that year, Hans appeared in the novel A Frozen Heart, where his point of view was explored alongside Anna's during the events of the first film. We learned quite a bit about his backstory, but this book's canon is debatable due to it being retconned by A Forest of Shadows in 2019 (the book gives a different description of what happened after Anna was hit by Elsa's magic).
Speaking of Forest of Shadows, Hans actually does make a brief appearance in this book. He appears in Anna's nightmare, one that shows her fear of Elsa thinking that Anna is useless to her.
The dancer bowed, the silver wolf mask nearly tipping off his nose. “As you wish, Princess Anna.” The blood in her veins turned to ice. Anna knew that voice. It was a voice she didn’t want to hear again. She peered uncertainly through the dark eyeholes of the mask. “Prince—Prince Hans?” “The very same.” A diamond ring suddenly materialized in his hand. “Your sister said I should give this to you when I ask for your hand.” “My—my hand?” Hans grabbed her wrist and jammed the ring onto her finger. “Your hand in marriage, of course. Your sister has given her blessing. She has no use for you.”
-Frozen 2: Forest of Shadows
Hans of course makes an appearance during live shows, most notably during the musical, and is given his own song, Prince Hans of the Southern Isles. In F2, other than a brief mention during their charades game and Elsa later destroying his memory in Ahtohallan, Hans is, as said, absent in the story. As a side note, he also appears in Once Upon a Time's season 4 non-canon spin-off as a villain.
Other than these instances, Hans has yet to make a return as a character in the mainline story.
How Hans Could Benefit Anna's Development
One thing we have to consider is that Hans is part of Anna's story more so than Elsa's. Yes, the two interact, but Hans was always a bigger part of Anna's overall development. I bring this up because many Hans fans that are also Helsa (Hans x Elsa) fans tend to hyper-focus on how his return would affect Elsa - when Elsa would largely be irrelevant to his return in reality.
Thus, let's refocus the conversation back on Anna. After all, it was Anna who Hans hurt and manipulated. If we're talking about him returning either as a villain or with redemption, it would directly affect Anna in one way or another.
As of Frozen 2 - Anna is the Queen of Arendelle, is engaged to marry Kristoff, has Mattias as an advisor/General, and works with Elsa in the Enchanted Forest to ensure peace.
Anna being Queen opens up some interesting narrative opportunities with Hans. His main goal was for Anna to become Queen so he would be her King. Thus, now that Anna is Queen without him, how would Hans view this? How would he react?
More importantly, how would Anna react to his return? Would she immediately shun him and give him another punch? Would she be afraid or nervous, with the writers exploring any trauma Anna may have from him? Basically, if Hans is brought back, it would actually give some interesting development opportunities for Anna and, to an extent, Kristoff.
Thus, Hans could actually make a return if his story is somehow integrated into Anna's development.
Villainous Return or Redemption?
My personal preference would be for Hans to return as a villain and, as described above, to be a development point for Anna to overcome. It would also benefit the series so that we wouldn't have to introduce a brand new villain character to develop on top of the already over-stuffed cast list. Hans already has his villain backstory and relationship with Anna, so it would be less work to make him the main villain and explore his already-established lore. I would also love it if he had a pretty amazing villain song since the series has been lacking in this department for a while.
When it comes to redemption, I don't mind the concept at all but feel it wouldn't be as fun and just make things a bit more complicated. After all, a redemption arc is a serious endeavor and requires a lot of work and care. As I said in this post here, it is not as easy as making Hans do something heroic, say he’s sorry, and now he’s good to go.
And considering the lukewarm reaction towards the simplistic and avoidant approach the writers to Agnarr and Iduna's 'redemption' (if you feel that they needed redemption, the opinions here are very polarizing) in F2, Hans' redemption would be received even more negatively due to his serious actions if they chose to oversimplify it.
As I said in the above post linked, which I'll copy here, the following would have to be addressed if the redemption takes place -
---- ---- ----
1. Having the villain learn why what they did was hurtful so that they genuinely feel bad about what they did.
This is difficult for a character like Hans because he is a Sociopath. It is not impossible to redeem a sociopathic character, but it requires a bit of nuance that not only has to disregard this aspect but may be too complex for a children’s title. Thus, the best option is to either retcon the Sociopath aspect or find a way to address the nuances in a way a child can understand.
2. Giving the villain quite a bit of time to reflect on everything and actually have the audience go on this journey with them. Thus helping the audience themselves believe that they have changed.
The issue here is that the interest is very low from audiences in the first place. People don’t want to see a Frozen 3 or Frozen Series focus on a Hans redemption- they want to see Anna and Elsa. Thus, this arc would need to take even longer because it would have to be a side story - more fitting for a series.
3. The victim’s pain needs to be the main focus, not the villain’s. Yes, understanding why the villain did what they did is important in any redemption arc. However, if the focus is too much on their tragic past, then it tells the audience that we need to feel sorry for them and not the victim.
In the case for Hans, the focus of his redemption needs to be what he did to Anna without any sugar coating or downplaying. He manipulated her, emotionally abused her after revealing himself, and then went to kill her sister after leaving her to die. The narrative would need to address all of this and let Anna express her pain to him, without his excuses.
With all this in mind, we also need to understand that it is Anna is not obligated to let Hans be part of the sister’s family no matter how much he’s changed. Even if she forgives him, letting him back in and giving him that trust again is a lot to ask. Forgiving ≠ letting back into your life. Basically, Hans would have to get his redemption and then be on his way to finding his own purpose in life. A forgive but not forget the idea.
---- ---- ----
Conclusion
My personal view is that I would love for Hans to return to the series. He was a big part of Frozen's success, with both Love is an Open Door and his twist reveal, thus it would be a shame if he never came back. My personal preference is for him to return as a villain because the narrative opportunities would be much more fun, however, I am not against the idea of him having a redemption arc - as long as it is done with care and respect.
Even better if the writers can somehow accomplish both - bring him as a villain, but somehow redeem him haha. Just give me my villain song dang it.

The Fulsome Yak
was the nicest inn for 20 miles in either direction along the North Coast Road, the fact of it being the only inn for that same distance playing no small part in its appeal. The stained, crumbly stone facade and the peeling paint on the thick wooden shutters weren’t exactly inspiring, but the low common room was warm and cozy, and the rooms above it were slightly less drafty than a night in a cave would have been.
A half dozen regulars huddled moodily around the wide stone fireplace, griping about the weather, the state of the last year’s harvest, and the prospects for planting in the spring. They were a significant fraction of the adult population in the tiny pinprick of a village that clung to the hillside like a lonely barnacle, and they largely ate and drank for trade. The grain they grew went into the ale, their livestock ended up sizzling on a spit in the small kitchen behind the bar. The rare coin one of them had to spend on a bottle of something finer eventually went into the pocket of another in exchange for the chopping of firewood or some other labor. It was very nearly a closed economic system, especially in the cold months when the weary sun never seemed to rise fully above the pine-covered hills, and the flow of traffic to and from the eastern plains slowed to a sporadic trickle. If some of those coins came out of the pockets (or off the bodies) of insufficiently wary travelers, well, that was just the way things sometimes went this far from civilization.
The whole of their out-of-town custom on that dark winter evening was the compact man with the neatly trimmed salt and pepper beard. He’d marched in the previous evening, stamping his numb feet, demanding wine, and paying in advance for a week’s stay in one of the spartan upstairs rooms. The icy stares of the locals softened some when he bought a round, but hadn’t melted anywhere near to the point of striking up a conversation, which didn’t seem to bother him. He’d sat in the same spot at the far end of the bar for most of the day, nursing a glass of spirit, nibbling on bits of bread and hard cheese, and reading with care from a small leatherbound notebook. He was in his spot, the townsfolk were in theirs, and nobody else was expected, so it was with some amount of surprise that they all turned their heads as the heavy wooden door scraped open and a tall figure stepped over the threshold in a bitter cold swirl of snow.
The newcomer was wrapped head to toe in several layers of skins and furs. Snow dusted its head and shoulders, and a rime of ice coated the scarves covering its nose and mouth. It shoved the door shut and shrugged off a bulging pack, which landed on a table with a clanking thud. It began unwrapping itself as it snorted and stomped across the room to the bar, trailing bits of snow and ice in its wake.
As unusual as it was for anyone to be traveling east toward the plains during the winter, it was even rarer to see anyone of the plains tribes headed in the other direction, no matter the time of year. Thord Jordson, oldest son of Jord Krondson, hadn’t seen one in all his 14 years of life. He wouldn’t have seen this one either, except his father had taken ill just a couple of days after his mother had given birth to his new baby sister. Despite none of them actually thinking he was ready, they’d had no choice but to let Thord take over running the inn while the rest of the family huddled under blankets, his father groaning as though no one could understand the depths of physical deprivation to which he’d sunk. So it was Thord, pale and anxious, who started in surprise as the figure tugged down its heavy knit scarf to reveal the bronze skin and deep amber eyes of the plainsfolk.
“G-good evening, sir,” Thord stammered. “Tis quite a night out there, I reckon. Didn’t expect much of anyone after dark.”
The figure stopped with its hands on the unevenly shiny wood of the bar, staring down at him, and then snorted. “I am often unexpected, child, as is one your age standing watch in a place like this. Do you have a father, or perhaps a master whose shoes you are trying to fill?”
Thord drew himself up to his full, not very imposing height, and stuck out his not very intimidating chest as best he could. “My father’s taken ill, and so it’s my job to run the place, and I don’t mind telling you we want no trouble, sir, so unless you’ve got coin I’d -”
“My name is Cryndal Thorngrass,” she growled, “and my mother is Queen of all the lands east of the Fellmarch. Trust that if I wanted trouble, child, I would have brought 50 warriors with me to burn your rotten little village to the ground before this rabble could get their trousers on.” She waved her hand dismissively at the men by the fire, who weren’t even pretending not to stare. “Thankfully for you, I bring not trouble, but benevolence.”
She tossed her snow-crusted mittens on the bar and pulled a small, glittering green stone from inside her sleeve. “When your father rises from his fever bed, he will tell you that this gem is worth enough in your crude coin to run this place for a month.”
Thord’s eyes widened. He instinctively raised his hand as she leaned over the bar, a little curtain of snow falling off the fur-lined leather wrapped around the top of her head. Holding the stone between her finger and thumb, she placed it gently in his waiting palm. “I expect to be moving on far sooner than that, but it should suffice for a room and some food for a couple of days?”
He stared down at the gem in his open palm and nodded when she coughed expectantly. “Yes s- uh, ma’am, yes ma’am. Only we’ve just got bread and cheese at the moment. There’s some sausage frozen in the shed out back, but father said I wasn’t to leave the bar while there was anyone in.”
“Bread and cheese will do just fine, child. Fetch it for me, and by the time you return I will have worked up an appetite shaking off the rest of this cursed snow.” Thord nodded, and backed through the door into the kitchen, slipping the stone into the pocket of his oversized apron as he went.
The conversation in the common room, which swooned when the plainswoman stomped out of the dark, had proceeded to die of shock at the sight of the jewel. The stranger at the bar, who’d been trying very hard to appear disinterested in anything past the pages of his book, was now looking directly at her as though he was trying to divine the value any other gems she might have tucked in her furs. Cryndal returned his look with a defiant glare, which was why she was slightly startled when she heard a raspy cough almost in her ear.
She turned slowly toward the sound, furiously projecting dismissive calm while inwardly cursing herself for being caught off guard. Five of the townsfolk were standing in a half circle around the sixth, a big man about a head taller than her, with a beard and set of teeth competing over which was more raggedy and brown. When he saw that he had her attention, he spread his meaty palms and chortled in a voice that sounded like an avalanche of rotten tree limbs.
“Well hello there, miss,” he said, the hard look in his brown eyes softened not a bit by the grin plastered on his face.

I need to pay more attention to Thord. I think I've only done two fanfics that have him in them: the "What If" version of the comic where he appears and my ElsaMaren version from "Atomic Blonde" (yes, I really did do a fanfic where Elsa is Charlize Theron and Honeymaren is Sofia Boutella and with a happy ending). For those who don't know Thord, he's basically the character that Hans' fans claim the prince is so that his return is justified, Hans' fans who understand that the character is a villain and not a poor guy who, because he was bullied in his childhood by his father and brothers, justifies him committing attempted murder in cold blood.
Thord is the character who wants to have magical powers because Elsa has magical powers, and wants to rule Arendelle because he believes that Elsa and Anna's family stole the kingdom from him. And if you consider that his appearance is quite similar to the initial concept art of Hans, you can say that Thord is Homelander with Hans being Soldier Boy:

https://www.devdiscourse.com/article/entertainment/2293995-frozen-3-can-have-lot-of-adventures-with-anna-bring-back-villain-prince-hans
Another article theorizing about "Frozen 3", has nothing new: it talks about the possibility of Elsa and Honeymaren becoming a couple (there are already lesbian characters in the franchise, Elsa can now officially be interested in romance, and when approached together after F2 the two women had a flirtatious mood) and a return from Hans.
I already expressed my opinion other times about the return of Hans, for me it is still quite unnecessary since his plot has been completed, and what the fanboys of the character really want (yes, Hans has fans and they are people who say that too are Anna and Elsa fans, I really don't understand that logic) is the exclusion of the “Frozen 1” plot twist to transform Hans into what he never was: a hero who cares about other people (they probably never read "Frozen Heart" and "Conceal, Don't Feel").
But I don't deny that if “Frozen 3” happens and it is in fact the definitive conclusion of Anna and Elsa's plot, it will be a little strange that the prince is not even mentioned. It is very likely that he will just be mentioned to be the victim of another joke or offense as has become a tradition in the Frozenverse, but in the remote possibility that he appears with some relevance I will bring back the two moments that the dumb sociopath as Jennifer Lee would say returned to the franchise in “Disney Magic Kingdoms”:
The first was his plot to try to conquer another kingdom after "Frozen Fever". He uses Elsa's powers (actually he manipulated Marshmallow, but technically it's the same thing) to create a new Eternal Winter causing chaos in another kingdom, and puts himself back as savior of the kingdom wanting to gain the trust of those around him who for not knowing him would be easily manipulated in theory.
After “Frozen 2” he installs explosives in the port of Arendelle during a festival planning to blow it up and cause chaos… I don't think he wanted to commit genocide, but who knows.
The main reason why I doubt that the character will return in a great product, in addition to his plot being completed in F1, are precisely his “sons”: Thord and Runeard. The three for me address three different types of the same character:
Hans (yes, this is prince concept art that was not used) had no hatred for Elsa's magic, but indifference. But when he realized that magic would get in the way of his plans and could not be controlled by him, the prince decided to make other people believe that magic was bad and would reward him if he destroyed it.
Thord, on the other hand, is jealous of Elsa's magic and tries precisely to get that power for him, he believed that with magic he would have the achievements that Elsa has.
Runeard acquired a hatred of magic upon realizing that it is a power that can move heaven, earth or even other people. And fearing losing the throne, he prefers to see the magic being completely destroyed.
For me it would be more cohesive with the franchise to create a fourth character with these same characteristics to be the antagonist (not the main one since the franchise is preferring the situation to be the true villain) being again a prince, a noble or a king (or maybe an emperor), and with this character having a new perspective on magic instead of bringing back an old character trying to extract something from an already concluded situation.

A Villain for Elsa and The Return of Thord
I already made some posts talking about possible ideas of villainous characters for “Frozen 3″ that with the confirmation of a classic villain in “Wish” I believe more and more possible, but I wanted to talk a little more about this subject and mention a certain curiosity.
This is King Magnificio, the villain of “Wish”.
Why “a villain for Elsa”? Let's remember the villains or antagonist of the franchise, however you want.
In “Frozen 1″ we have Hans and the Duke of Weselton, but Alan Tudyk's character seems that not even Disney considers him a villain mainly because of the way he was treated after F1 compared to the sociopathic prince himself (I think the Duke he is the most present character in the Frozenverse excluding the main characters and Oaken. If there are people who argue that due to the number of references to the unredeemable monster he has to be in F3, if we use the same logic the Duke has to share the role with the sisters instead from Kristoff lol).
In “Frozen 2″ we have Runeard who is already dead when the plot begins, and it is the consequences of his actions that reverberate.
So let's go to the books: Nattmara in “Forest of Shadows”, and if you want there's Draugr from “Polar Nights”.
And in the comics we have Thord.
If you know these materials, you noticed a certain curiosity about these villainous figures, excluding the Duke and Runeard, all that are left are Anna's villains and not Elsa's villains, except Thord.
Obviously they get in the way of both sisters, but Hans is all about Anna's arc first, Nattmara was driven by Anna's fear, and even the Draugr seems to be more connected to her because of their similar histories (although this part of the book seems more Anna is fighting real-life haters who haven't accepted that she is now the Queen of Arendelle. I like how “Polar Nights” can be interpreted as a metalanguage book). And it's Anna who somehow defeats them all. But Thord is 100% just attached to Elsa.
Thord is one of the characters I've called "sons of Hans", where he seems to be an evolution of the Prince of the Southern Isles arc. But Thord is special because he is one of several that seem to have been created based on designers of the prince's appearance, but precisely on discarded concept art, which is not at all rare among the NPCs of the franchise, when I say that Hans is a generic character it's not just by implication.
In the comic "Lur Thief" addresses a possible origin for Elsa's magic. Thord is a member of a noble family that he believes in the past should have been the true royal family of Arendelle, and so he tries to regain power from the sisters. But the most interesting part of this is that he believes that this event in the past is linked to the origin of Elsa's powers, and because he considers himself more worthy than her, he also wants the ice powers of the Queen of Arendelle at that moment. Thord is not as simple as Hans who would be happy with the conquest of any kingdom that serves to humiliate his brothers, he wants Arendelle and mainly wants Elsa's magic and power. At the end of the comic what he believed to be the origin of Elsa's powers proves to be a lie, but he manages to escape promising to return for revenge... And as far as I know he never did.
This whole "Lur Thief" plot about the past of the kingdom of Arendelle may not even fit in with what we know of the kingdom's real past anymore. And it would not be the first time that this happens with a comic, there is a comic telling the first Polar Night Festival after Anna becomes Queen of Arendelle which would obviously conflict with the book “Polar Nights”.
What I've said before I repeat now: for me “Frozen 2″ failed to simplify the entire magical universe of the franchise because it limits what it can do with magic. Putting other humans with magic into the franchise at this point in my opinion would take all the weight off Elsa's arc in the second film, as well as causing other problems. And that's why I believe that if “Wish” really was the kickoff for the return of classic Disney villains, “Frozen 3″ will have a great chance of having an exemplary character like that, but even if that person (I'm rooting for a villain similar to Olenna Tyrell from "Game of Thrones") has a magical interest like Thord making Elsa his rival and not Anna, I don't imagine it will be what some want: a "Harry Potter" style duel of wizards or fights using elements like in "Avatar: The Last Airbender”.

DISNEY MAGIC KINGDOMS: Hans and his two comebacks.
“Disney Magic Kingdoms” is a mobile game.
Although Hans is the main antagonist of “Frozen 1″ he only officially returned in the franchise in “Frozen Fever” where it was shown what punishment his father, the King of the Southern Isles, gave him for his actions in Arendelle:
Be a stable keeper. “How am I going to punish my least favorite son for ruining my business chances with Arendelle after he tried to kill the queen and princess? Put him to work in the stable”, Hans is really a playboy lol
And besides, I believe that the only mentions of the prince's future after F1 are like the phrase from “Polar Nights” where it reinforces that he continues in his destiny of “Frozen Fever”. Duke Weselton even though he ordered two of his henchmen to kill Queen Elsa he was just expelled from Arendelle who cut ties with Weselton, in fact the same punishment as Hans, but unlike the prince who is still drowning in shit for 7 years the Duke has returned over and over again for the franchise including Arendelle, and I believe that relations between the two kingdoms, Arendelle and Weselton, have already been fixed.
I'm not here to defend Prince Hans because I consider him to be a really despicable figure and that it wouldn't add anything to returning, being at most a repeat of his F1 actions (as are the passages on him in this game) or he would have to suffer a turn of events 180º in his personality, but I believe that it would be easier for Disney to create another idiot just like him (Thord and Runeard, for example) if his participation is not just cheap fanservice. Anyway, I just wanted to explain the situation.
But he returns in “Frozen Heart” and “Conceal, Don't Feel” which are two versions of F1 that I believe is Disney trying to better explain the nickname Jennifer Lee gave Hans: “dumb sociopath”, and in in my opinion they succeeded. These two books reinforce Hans' main characteristic: he only cares about himself and when people stop being useful he discards them as if they were nothing (in short: if you used the fact that he saved Elsa in the Ice Palace as an argument that he's not a bad person these two books threw that argument into the same shit that Hans is buried).
Now after the introduction, let's get to the focus of the post.
HANS RETURNS AFTER FROZEN 1 AND FROZEN FEVER
Elsa and Anna are in another realm when a strange snowstorm starts there. Elsa knows that this was not an act of her powers, but she is not sure if the event is magical or not, it is not the time for a snowstorm, and fearing that her sister will get involved and hurt herself, she decides to take care of the situation by herself.
Anna, seeing that Elsa has disappeared, starts looking for her sister in the middle of the snowstorm, believing that she may be in danger, but who she finds first is Hans. Hans accuses Elsa of being the cause of the situation because she was not there trying to help, but since no one in the kingdom knows the man's reputation, everyone would believe the prince's words.
Anna, fearing that people will believe Hans' words and accuse Elsa as the cause of the storm, decides to calm the population, she ends up meeting Kristoff and together they consult the Trolls who claim that although Elsa is not the cause of the event, she can end it.
Hans, taking advantage of the situation, goes to the kingdom's castle to try to dominate the place while pretending to care about the population while blaming the Snow Queen for the chaos. When Anna and Kristoff find Elsa, the three decide to put an end to the prince's lie.
Elsa, Anna and Kristoff return to the castle, and Elsa uses her magic to prove that she is a good person, managing to convince the population not to believe Hans' lies. But Hans still directly accuses Elsa which makes her realize that he might be hiding something.
Elsa and Anna return to Elsa's Ice Palace and discover Marshmallow asleep and he is somehow the cause of the storm. But in the Ice Palace they also find the Southern Isles' court physicist, he had been sent as a nanny to Hans, but the prince blackmailed him and used his knowledge in Mashmallow to cause the snowstorm, and so Hans would help the people convincing people that he is a hero to have the kingdom under his feet.
When Hans is confronted with the truth, he returns to the Ice Palace trying to escape with Marshmallow to continue his plan, but Elsa after a certain problem manages to wake up the snow giant who beats the prince.
SECONDARY MISSIONS
1 - Welcome a Thirteenth Son
HANS: Please... allow me to introduce myself. I am Prince Hans, of the Southern Isles. If there's ANY way I can be of service to help you in a time of need, please call on me. I'll do everything in my power. What? You don't believe me? Fine. But you try being thirteenth in line to a throne and see what you'd do.
2 – Keeping Up Appearances
HANS: Let's see... marriage is out... magic's been unreliable... and that's the last time I try to steal a snow monster... Don't judge me. It's not like I have a lot of options. I'll never get any power at home with twelve older brothers. I suppose I'll just have to rely on my charm. After all, I was raised to be quite charming. And I AM still a prince. I'm sure there are at least some people here who haven't heard what that's entailed, lately.
Hans tries to win over the people.
HANS: Turns out there aren't that many people out there who don't know me... ...and too many people who think they do. You wouldn't know how to get tomato stains out of a white jacket, would you? Next time, I should look for an audience carrying less produce.
3 – The Corridors of Power
HANS: You know, I actually WAS here on official business. Well, technically, anyway. My brothers thought it would be HILARIOUS to ship me off to every kingdom on the map to learn about proper diplomacy... ...which means that I have diplomatic credentials to get me through the castle gate. After a few meetings with officials... perhaps a bribe or two... Who knows? You COULD be looking at this Kingdom's future king...
Hans tries to infiltrate Arendelle's Rink.
HANS: Well, THAT was a complete waste of time! Oh, I was offered a position at the castle, just not the one I was hoping for. I will be politely declining the job of "Sanitation Assistant to the Stablehand -- Junior Grade." This kingdom's anti-corruption laws are REALLY thorough. Though, they DID say I could work my way up to "Associate Grade" after fifteen years' service. Pass.
4 – What Is She Hiding?
HANS: I have spent my entire life trying to get anywhere NEAR a throne room -- and "Queen Elsa" just CREATED one. An ice palace! Out of thin air! And she STILL managed to gain the people's trust, even after freezing the whole kingdom. I wonder if she has a secret hidden away somewhere in that palace. A magical way of winning the people to her side.... I will be right back. I have an errand to run.
Hans goes to investigate the Ice Palace.
HANS: Empty... I should've known. Well, except for this note someone left on the throne... "Elsa isn't a good ruler because of magic -- it's because she's caring, smart, and finally accepts herself for who she is."` "P.S. You're a lying, predictable, weasel-faced toad, and I bet you don't even LIKE sandwiches." I'm pretty sure I know who THIS is from. I DO like sandwiches, you know. I'm not a monster.
SOME THOUGHTS AND EXPLANATIONS
Disney Magic Kingdoms works like this: the game has the central kingdom which is like a Hub where the player can place representatives of other Disney places that acted as if it were the real place. When Hans invaded the kingdom and tried to manipulate the citizens to elect him king, he was in this central kingdom (which is not Arendelle), but he managed to interact with the representations of Frozen and kidnap Mashmallow.
Hans tries to conquer another kingdom using the same methods he tried with Arendelle. To me that's what would make the most sense with the character arc. All he wanted was to gain prestige to rub it in his brothers and father's face that he's not the failure they always imagined him to be, so after failing in Arendelle it would make a lot more sense for him to try the plan elsewhere than just revenge on Arendelle. But in this case, he tried to use Marshmallow's power to create chaos since Eternal Winter worked so well to put the population of Arendelle in the position he wanted: desperate crying out for a savior.
HANS RETURNS AFTER FROZEN 2
1 - Snow and Sisters
ANNA: Okay! First Winter Festival since my coronation day... First one since Elsa moved to the Enchanted Forest... Whoo! I can DO this! All I have to do is show Arendelle how good I am at festival-hosting, AND make Elsa proud, AND have a good time doing it... I hope I can! A good time, and a QUEENLY time. I am going to host this festival in a queenly way. Queenly? Is that a word? Queenishly...? ... All right, FOCUS, Anna. Look it up later -- host the festival now!
Anna is going to prepare the Winter Festival.
ANNA: I thought about it, and getting a krumkake with cloudberry cream from that stall was an EXTREMELY queenly thing to do. I do wish Elsa was here to share this with me, though. We always used to love eating krumkake at this time of year. But... she's still on her way. So, until she gets here, I'm gonna test out whether ice skating is as queenly as dessert is! Maybe I'd better double-check the dessert-tasting part afterward, though. Just to be safe!
2 - Missed Connections
KRISTOFF: Has anyone seen Anna...? We said we'd meet up between my lute performances to ride the gravity mine cart, but I can't find her... Right... I should explain. Oaken's tinkered with the mine cart track to make it a "festival amusement of his own invention..." HE says it's more fun than riding a sled down a mountain, and I said "that's impossible," and... now I have to prove it. And... Uh... ALSO have a good time on the ride with my fiancée. (... Who can confirm how right I am about this.) Send
Kristoff goes looking for Anna in "Ice Skate at the Rink"
KRISTOFF: No sign of her. At least I got to finish my lute performance while I was looking. It's kinda nice to play while I walk--
ANNA: Kristoff! Sorry-I-missed-you-still-trying-to-figure-out-this-ice-skating-thing----Specifically-how-to-stop-okay-talk-later-love-you-byeeeeeee...
KRISTOFF: ... Huh. How did she end up OUTSIDE the ice rink...? Guess I'll catch up with her later. After she's... uh... slowed down.
3 - Visiting Guests
ELSA: Getting here took a little longer than usual, but it was worth it. Usually, I ride the Water Nokk down the fjord, but I wanted to travel with the Northuldra visitors. This will be their first time at Arendelle's Winter Festival, and I wanted to give them an idea of what to expect. Of course, Honeymaren and Ryder ran off to see the sights the moment we got here, so I'm not sure I actually needed to. Send
Elsa goes to explore the festival.
ELSA: The festival is just like I remembered it! Arendelle will always be special to me, and it always feels nice to come back. I haven't seen Anna yet, but I couldn't resist making some snow patterns for the children. They were so excited! Families come from all over for the festival -- Zaria, Chatho, the Southern Isles, and now the Enchanted Forest, too. But don't worry: We make sure a CERTAIN person from the Southern Isles is NEVER invited. Though other citizens of the Southern Isles are always welcome.
4 - Guess Who...?
HANS: Three... years... Three years in the stables... ingratiating myself with the palace staff... bribing the Chamberlain to forge me new papers... Firming up my alibi... sneaking onto the ship to Arendelle... blending in with the festival delegation... Finally. After three years... Hans of the Southern Isles has returned! ... Disguised as a peppernut cookie salesman. (He was the easiest person to lock in a compartment in the hold before we docked...) Send
Hans puts his plan into action.
HANS: Hm. Finding an out-of-the-way location to plant those barrels of explosives might be harder than I thought... ...Mostly because I keep getting mobbed by dessert-crazy festivalgoers. This was NOT the best identity to steal, in retrospect. Although, credit where it's due -- he IS a decent baker. I've been snacking on these things all afternoon... Unfortunately, it will take more than peppernut cookies to get behind the scenes unnoticed.
5 - Recipe for Success
RYDER: ... And this large man in a sweater has a portable sauna AND some kind of downhill-sled-cart thing! Plus Mattias found his dad's sourdough flatbread recipe and is doing a tasting later. How are you NOT excited about all this?
HONEYMAREN: I am, Ryder. Don't worry. It's just that Elsa asked me to help with the dessert stall, and...
RYDER: ... And you don't wanna let her down. Gotcha. Hey, why don't I help? If we work together, we'll sell twice as much.
Honeymaren and Ryder sell desserts.
HONEYMAREN: I think that's actually the last of them, somehow! ... Phew. How did you do?
RYDER: Great! I actually started serving the mountain-sorrel pudding and the cloudberry jam together. It was really popular!
HONEYMAREN: Seriously? That's like... tart on tart, Ryder. I'm surprised anyone enjoyed it!
RYDER: Yeah, all except one guy. He was so busy asking me if this place had any "out-of-the-way storehouses," he didn't even eat it! I mean... he WAS selling some really good cookies, but still, he was really pushy.
What Ryder really meant in this mission: "I understand sister, you are a lesbian and you are in love with the Snow Queen Elsa, I will help you please her".
6 - Trains vs. Sleds
OLAF: SVEN! Sven, Sven, Sven! Oh, I have no WORDS for what I just experienced! Other than that it was Oaken's mine-cart-gravity-ride-thing, and also, maybe the most fun I've had in my entire LIFE! It was AMAZING, Sven. First I ROLLED, and then I COASTED, and-- Ooh, I like how that sounds! It really rolls off the tongue. I should tell Oaken about that -- right after I tell him how right he was about it being more exciting than Kristoff's sled--
SVEN: SNORF.
Send Sven and Olaf disagree.
SVEN: Snurf snuf...
OLAF: Ha ha ha! Okay, Sven -- we've got a deal. I'll agree that Kristoff's sled is TIED for most exciting with Oaken's coasty-roll'em... (Or... something like that. I feel like we should workshop the name a little more? I'll come back to it.) Anyway -- and in exchange -- YOU'LL tell me three new stories tonight at bedtime! Okay?
SVEN: Snorf!
OLAF: Well, it's a pleasure doing business with you too! ... And there's leftover mountain-sorrel over there if you're hungry. I hear it's better than carrots!
7 - Fire Friend
BRUNI: Skrrrk...
ELSA: Oh! Hello again. Are you all right? I thought you were helping Yelana keep the stew pot heated...
BRUNI: Skrik... Squeak!
ELSA: A little overwhelmed, huh? Well, there are a lot of people here. Sometimes it can be a little much for me too. It's all right if you want to go back to the Enchanted Forest now.
Bruni returns to the Enchanted Forest.
BRUNI: Squeak, squeak! (Purr)
8 - He Can Explain!
HANS: Fine. If the Northuldra delegation has no useful information, there are plenty of other visitors here that might. Maybe some of Weselton's staff...? The Duke knows my face, but as long as I'm careful about who I approach, I should-- ANNA: ...aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAA--(doof!) HANS: OW! Hey -- watch who you slam into on those skates-- ... Ohhh, no... I was GOING to say, there's a PERFECTLY REASONABLE explanation for why I'm here right now, and if you'd just (DOOF--)
ANNA: Nope! Not listening. I'd MUCH rather sock you in the face again. Like that! Guards? Please escort the ONLY person on my "Never-Invited-to-the-Festival List" off the premises.
HANS: (Koff--) Wait...! See, you're not--
ANNA: Oh -- sorry! I meant "escort him out of ARENDELLE." Which I'm the queen of. You can make a day trip out of it, if you'd like.
HANS: Uh--
ANNA: Gerda can pack you some sandwiches for the road! Make sure you give absolutely NONE of them to Hans.
HANS: Hey! That's not-- (*sigh*...) Fine. I'm not hungry, anyway.
9 - Sweet Endings
ANNA: There you are, Elsa! I'm sorry it took me so long to find you -- I just... uh... ran into an old acquaintance. But hey -- I saved you a krumkake with cloudberry cream, just like we used to love! I thought we could share it. ELSA: Well, I saved you the last mountain-sorrel pudding! It has cloudberries too. Rather like a... ANNA: ... Tart on tart? ELSA: Yes! How did you know? ANNA: I heard Ryder's sales pitch! And I'm ALL IN. Let's sit by the rink and share both. We've got a lot to catch up on...
Elsa and Anna share dessert while Kristoff continues to explore the festival.
RYDER: Hey, Kristoff -- I tracked down Anna for you! She and Elsa are over by the ice rink, and... Whaaaat are you doing?
KRISTOFF: Giving them space to be sisters. This is the first Winter Festival since Elsa moved. They should have some time together.
RYDER: No... I meant, "Why are you carving a tiny model sled track out of an ice block?"
KRISTOFF: (*sigh*...) Well, I finally went on Oaken's gravity mine cart while I was waiting for Anna, and it was... completely amazing. I figured I could pitch him on a frozen sled version if I get the design right! ... And if I ride the original a few more times.
RYDER: Well, let me know the next time you do -- I'll back you up from the passenger seat! Reindeer pals, right?
KRISTOFF: Heh... Yeah! Reindeer pals!
SOME THOUGHTS AND EXPLANATIONS
I found out that Hans was in this game precisely because of a mission where Hans tried to kidnap Bruni, but when I was doing the investigation to create this post, I didn't find this mission or any other individual mission with him after the events of the second film. I didn't go looking in the same place that I found the mission to kidnap Bruni (it would be a lot of work and I don't believe it will bear much fruit), but it's there as a curiosity that may have been an optical illusion.
Was Hans's plan to explode barrels and cause genocide in Arendelle? Hans in "Frozen Heart" said that he only considers killing someone as a last resort so I have my doubts. Could this really have been his plan? Yes, but I think it's more likely that he just wants to create chaos or damage to Arendelle (I praised another arc precisely for running away from the cliché of revenge without purpose and this arc is precisely that cliché).
The post-F2 “Winter Festival” already happened in the comics, but in this case only the main team participated (Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven) with just generic winter activities... yeah. In “Disney Magic Kingdoms” it was indeed a meeting of everyone from F2 (and if the character did not appear, he was mentioned). Something like this has already happened with “Polar Nights”, there is a comic that also tells the first polar night festivity in Arendelle after F2... what happens in the comic are just generic activities, nothing relevant.
Which should be considered canon? The 4 events are considered as the first after F2 so you can only choose one of each: "Winter Festival" from the comics and "Polar Nights" from the book seem to be more canonical.
Which happens first? In both cases it seems to be the “Winter Festival”, so that line from "Polar Nights" saying that the Northuldras are on migration cannot be considered to justify the absence of the tribe in the "Winter Festival" comic which makes me wish for canonicity of the version of "Disney Magic Kingdoms".

And when the "Frozen Podcast" is released on Spotify, each episode will have an art. So what do you think Queen Disa and Lord Wolfgang might look like if they were given art? Disa I couldn't imagine anything specific although I believe she will be a very beautiful and seductive woman (your voice really impressed me), Wolfgang I thought of a nerdier version of Thord because he is the stereotypical clumsy one.
