He is wearing an iron cuirass, an expensive belt, a pair of common pants, and netch leather boots. He knows the spell Frost Barrier.

Almalexia awoke. She looked out the window to see dusk had come and gone; she had been absent from at least half of the party. Cursing to herself, she jumped up and threw on the gown she intended to wear and began putting on some sort of face. First a coat on the skin, then the cheeks, the eyes, the tip of the nose, the lips. This takes her about 30 minutes or so, and she curses her tardiness while gathering her things. It’s not like she can leave without putting herself together.

She exited the guest room and rushed out into the hall, following the sound of some commotion happening in the great hall. Hope! Maybe whatever that was would distract from showing up late. She slowed her pace a bit, she had put on heels beforehand and they were hurting her feet. She had been very used to the small heels and flats of the battlefield, but this was different. Looking good and being quick seem to counteract each other, she thought to herself as she tried listening in. No luck, would have to see what’s up from socialization, which she dreaded. She stopped for a second to experience her fear. Frankly, she thought she looked horrible, turning to lean against the wall closest to her. Suddenly, a figure was made apparent.

“Boo,” it said to Almalexia. Rightfully startled, she let out a yelp before the figure jumped forward and placed a hand over her mouth. “Shhh! Do you want to blow my cover?” With it further in the light now, she felt relief.

“Gods, Vehk, you scared the shit out of me.” She sighed as she moved his hand off her face. “What are you doing here? Here, and back here specifically?”

“I came because Nerevar came. Was hoping to find him, but he’s nowhere to be found.”

“Okay,” Almalexia said flatly. “Were you stealing?”

“Yeah.” He reached into his pockets, pulling out a few jewels and gold chunks from the gilding of the pillars.

“Damn. Did you rip these off?”

“I chiseled them,” He smiled and produced a small hammer and chisel from a different pocket. “Should more than cover the cost of travel whenever I get back to Mournhold.”

“Nerevar didn’t cover travel costs for you?”

“I wasn’t invited.”

“...Why?” Almalexia replied, to which Vivec showed her again the chiseled off pieces of wall from his pockets before smiling again and tucking them back away. “I see. How did you get in?”

“ Magic.” He did a jazzy gesture and leaned against the wall alongside her. “What’s got you down like this?”

“I just– It’s nothing.” She sighed. “I’m… worried about the party. I fell asleep and I’m REALLY late, I should get back-”

“No need,” he interrupted. “Voryn stormed off. Not a soul out there knows where he went, people are about to start leaving anyway. You have cover. How do you feel about a change in scenery?

“What?”

“You heard me. Let’s leave. We never spend time with each other one on one, Ayem,” he insisted. She looked back to the light of the great hall in the distance, buzzing with noise and seeming that Vivec was right in saying that people were beginning to leave. She looked back to him and nodded, he gave her one last smile and gestured for her to follow. The two scurried down the hall away from the masses and out a side door leading into an empty, ashy courtyard, where Almalexia sat on a stone bench to rest her feet.

“Could you not just take those off?” Vivec said, taking off his own shoes to encourage her.

“I can’t just go barefoot. Besides, they tie the outfit together.” She laughed.

“Would anyone here care about being barefoot?” He dances around a bit, letting some of the fallen ash kick up around his calves. “It’s all ash over here anyway. Soft.”

“You think I should?”

“If they’re hurting you, yes.”

She sighed and looked him up and down. He was wearing a tighter pair of pants under a loincloth that made him look silly without his shoes on. He noticed her gaze and wiggled his hips, twiddling his toes as the beads that hung over his breasts clacked against each other. She blushed at his enticing and looked away, considering the consequences.

“But you look like an idiot with the pants,” she objected. He gave her a joking offended look and without hesitation pulled off the pants, leaving just the loincloth.

“I can play this game.” He laughed. “Join me, you’re always so stuck up about how you look all the time.”

“You don’t understand what it’s like to be a woman.”

“Sure I do! You know who I am.”

“Yeah… It’s just… You don’t have to be beautiful all the time.”

“I want to sometimes. You know you don’t have to be all the time though.”

“But-”

“Take your heels off, Ayem,” he interrupted again. She looked at him and nodded, slipping her heels off alongside him and rising to meet his gaze. She wiggled her toes in the ash alongside him and smiled slightly. It WAS very soft, it felt good.

“You look better when you’re happy,” he said.

“Did I look bad before?”

“No, you looked unhappy. You always seem unhappy when you’re trying to be someone.”

“If I don’t look and act a certain way, people talk. I can’t have that in my position,” she sighed, turning away from him. He approached her from behind.

“Why does it matter so much to you? If you keep the same as them, everything will stay the same.” He placed a hand on her shoulder. “Who are you?”

“What do you mean?” She turned back to him, removing the hand from her shoulder. He looked concerned now.

“I mean, who are you? As in, what kind of person are you?”

“I… I’m strong, I’m capable, I’m beautiful, I’m all the things I need to be, I hope.”

“You HOPE. That’s the key, you imply the possibility that you aren’t any of that. You don’t completely know if that’s you, but that is what’s holding you back.” He took her hand. “I want to know you, Almalexia. You keep putting on this front and I won’t be able to. You don’t have to be someone else’s definition of beautiful, you can be whatever definition doesn’t leave you dreading parties and in pain.”

“But people are intimidated by that,” she objected. “They leave, and I need my network.”

“Then let me take the form with you. We could be beautiful in our own right.” She thought for a second, watching her skirt dangle into the ash, collecting it in the folds, and lifted it up before kicking towards Vivec, resulting in a surprised “AUGH” from him. He looked to her quickly through the ash cloud as she smiled at him. Realizing she was enticing him into revenge, he kicked back, covering her with the cloud as well as she laughed. They kicked back and forth at each other for a couple seconds as the cloud grew thicker around them. They stopped when they couldn’t see each other anymore.

“Vehk?” Almalexia called with a giggle. “Where’d you go?”

“Right here.” He appeared close in front of her, their noses almost touching. “You do look beautiful like this. Can I kiss you?” Almalexia smiled at this.

“You can,” she said, wrapping her arms around his neck, “but Nerevar might not be too happy about it.”

“His loss.” He kissed her deep, and the two forgot about the world around them for a second.

Did a sketch/inktober i guess? Of the ❄️ Frostkin ❄️

Moomin imagines

Okay i know im a nobody in fandom but lemme tell yall about this dream I had;

There was some sort of creature, similar to the Groke, only it was a lot more vengeful and had abilities to twist someone’s mind. And anyway, Moomin and Little My come across this gem in the forest that allows for flight of objects. So if you fix it to a toy or wings or a device itll make that devise fly and thus you (dont ask me why idk) and anyway, they dont know it bellngs to this Groke relative and it comes a-looking, finds out Moomin has it and it inflicts whats called a Nightmare Coma, on him. He wont wake up, and eventually the nightmare will continue until it chases him so deep into his subconscious he wont be able to wake up ever, the whole sequence is he thinks hes still awake, and is running away from this creature that is chasing him deeper and deeper into a dark forest.

Snufkin, returning from a brief trip to get a little adventure and some presents for his dear friends (Specifically Moomin) hears a creature talking as he reaches moomin valley about a vengeful attack from this creature. Goes ‘my, how frightening, I certainly dont envy that poor person. I hope theyll be alright.’ Because naturally its snufkin, hes heard of this creature and maybe even tangled with it and managed to escape. Theres an uneasy feeling in his chest as he recalls— and quickens his step, ‘Better hurry back to tell Moomin to be careful. Better stay close, so nothing bad happens.’ And then he hears whoever was talking say;

‘It already attacked the Moomin. He hasnt woken in days—’ and idk man my dreams— visually, are weird. So imagine the kindof edgy tone of action anime mixed with the new CG moomin show, and imagine for a second Snufkin just freezing. A darkness grips his heart, a coldness. He knows what the Groke-like is capable of, and now its happened to Moomin? His Moomin?? The kindest and dearest person he knows.

Snufkin’s face grows dark, his eyes turn icy and he starts to turn invisible, except his shoes which start forming frost, an icy mist forming around them and where he goes a chilly wind follows as if Winter has come on the heels of Jack Frost himself. And when it reaches Moominhouse the windows frost over, theres a chill in the air and a distorted Snufkin-like figure stands at the bridge. Watching. The wind blows and the window freezes over Moomin’s window where he lies panting, tossing and turning with fright as he runs.

Indont really remember much else, but I remember a part of my dream where Snufkin becomes like jack frost mixed with that nimble Huli-Jing from the Love,Death and Robots short Hunters. He was fast, and agile and deadly and catlike, anywhere he went he brought ice with him and at some point he appears in the forest of Moomin’s dream to stop him running, and begins to chase back the Groke-like and lead Moomin back the other way, to the waking world. But he’s much taller, lither, and catlike. With long black claw/paws, slitted silvery eyes and long unusual cat feet— and frost at his boots that spreads to all the trees in this dream forest as he aggressively chases back the Groke-like creature. (my dreams are often kinda wild like this idk man)

And yeah that was the dream I had it was pretty cool. I didnt know Snufkin was actually Jack Frost but it was cool.

Counters Intuitive Commentary

Hey everyone! Here’s the commentary for my last contest. I tried to keep it shorter and snappier so I could get it done more quickly and on occasion I succeeded. Ready?

Paldor, Consortium Motivator by @wolkemesser

Interesting card. There’s a lot of people wanting a jund -1/-1 counter commander, and this does that while also offering the possibility of jund superfriends. I dunno how Jund that -1/-1 counter ability is though (specifically, the being able to tap your opponents’ stuff down part) and I feel like the second might want a mana cost to balance it out a little. It goes infinite with anything that can untap creatures on a +, and it makes the -1/-1 counter ability likely to be used more, since I feel like the loyalty one is significantly stronger.

Tidemaster Mage by @railway-covidae

Absolutely love the effect here, just not sure about the keywords. I’m not sure this really needs ward since sleeping all your opponents’ stuff on ETB is already quite strong; I think making it easier to interact with the potentially big creature they’re facing down is a good idea, and you already got value from the ETB. Islandwalk also has its known swinginess problems, and this doesn’t seem like a great card for it anyway. You want to be playing this against creature heavy decks which blue decks, generally, are not.

Myr Blistersphere by @bread-into-toast

This seems to be fighting with itself in a way I’m not sure I love. The mix between the cost reduction and the “+1/+1 counter for each mana spent to cast it” just seems like it’s gonna lead to a lot of feel-bad moments.

Monster of the Deep by @yourlordofnothing1

Not sure why this is hybrid and not monoblue, it doesn’t seem particularly black. I am enamored by “adapt ability” though, and by new kinds of keyword counters. Maybe this wants a different trigger for the tap+stun ability than blocking/being blocked, or maybe it wants a different keyword, cause these kind of fight against eachother. If you’re using the islandwalk, you don’t get to use the first ability.

Trokair Shield-Bearer by @stareyedesper

Solid common. You can use it immediately if you want to protect something, or suspend it and not know what you might have out, but minimum it can put the counter on itself.

Slorpux, Necrogen Hunger by @hypexion

Big fan of a toxic ability that’s increasing over time, and experience counters are a good way to do it for commander. The ability that lets you get experience counters could be more interesting and a bit more buildaroundy, but maybe it’s fine that it’s not so you can focus on the poison.

Remembered Lore by @ghostly-blackbird

This would require an extremely specific set to be in, and I would love to see that set. I’m genuinely not too sure what to make of this. I worry it might get too repetitive though, reusing the same sagas over and over and getting cards back from the yard over and over. It also definitely runs into the dice problem; you could maybe use differently colored dice? But it could easily get confusing. And it has a strong chance of doing nothing, it doesn’t do much at all on its own.

Frostkin Abjurer by @greensunzenith

This is probably better as protection than removal, but there are times where you’d be willing to put a shield counter on your opponent’s thing to stop it from untapping. It if you’re wanting to put a shield counter on a creature it’s cause you want that creature around (likely for attacking and blocking) so the stun counter is kind of anti-that. The flash does help, but it means the shield counters aren’t all that different from indestructible until end of turn.

Tyvar of Steel and Stone by @nine-effing-hells

I like how you represent Tyvar’s in-lore abilities in a way that haven’t really much been represented in his two cards so far. I’m not sure this needs the black but it’s probably fine that it has it. This is a pretty specific card for a specific kind of deck, but it seems really fun for that deck so I’m down.

Zonot Slimecaster by @demimonde-semigoddess

My only note is that I think the cost to activate the ability should be a little more. Either GU or 2U. Seems cheap for what it does, especially if there are good ways to put counters on it in the environment besides evolve. Otherwise, sweet and simple.

The Emperor Everleaving by @yd12k

Flavorfully, I love it. Vanishing is a great fit for her. Mechanically, I’m less sure. Having two sets of counters on one card, both of which are likely tracked using dice, and either of which running out means she dies, is asking for confusion. Also if you alternate between the +1 and the -1, you can keep her around as repeatable removal, which seems like a lot for 2 mana even as limited as that removal is. I also don’t love that she can’t naturally reach her ultimate. I do think the implications you’re going for with the ultimate, of the spirits with vanishing that different cards put a different number of counters on, is really cool.

Spore-Maw Colony by @yourrightfulking

Solid way to mix +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters. I like how the second ability encourages you to spread counters around and the graft lets you do that, but you have to put in the work and play a couple of creatures to do it.

Akki Recycler by @helloijustreadyourpost

Good card for a modified deck. A bit unusual in red but definitely something I could have seen in neon dynasty. Putting the mana gate in the trigger was a good choice.

Forlorn Revenant by @bergdg

This is a really sweet design, but the costs seem backwards. The front of this is not worth 5 mana, maybe 3, but putting a -1/-1 counter on your opponents stuff each turn then getting a probably decent-sized creature out of it afterwards is worth more than three. Probably 4.

Staff of Restoration by @dimestoretajic

Art direction: a staff in the center of the shot, clearly reminiscent of the previous Mirrodin staves, glowing with eerie light, shoving away black ichor at the bottom as if it was repelling ferrous liquid with a magnet

I’m not a fan of removing poison counters, personally. It’s just not really something I think should be a part of the game, but the design kind of falls apart without that given the flavor, so it’s hard to give any more notes beyond that. I do think it should be colorless though- I’m not sure why it’s 4 color, and I feel like an answer to poison like this you wouldn’t want to limit to such a specific deck.

Agricultural Planning by @snugz

This just seems really weak, to be honest. I like the idea of land type counters (though if this is a set mechanic which it seems like is the intention, I’d just use the name of the land) but this should cantrip or something. Two mana is so much for it. Frankly, one mana is a lot for it.

Phyrexian Oilstone by @piccadilly-blue

If one ability puts loyalty counters on planeswalkers with compleated and one puts them on planeswalkers without compleated… can’t that just be “remove an oil counter from ~: Put a loyalty counter on target planeswalker.” This also just seems, weak and kinda boring. It’s 4 mana just to put two loyalty counters on a planeswalker.

Kinderkatch Patrol by @1001gecs

Note: Couldn't add image description, but flavor is a long spindly faerie flying around and kidnapping children. As the faerie catches more and more children, it's weighed down, barely able to fly. In the card, we can see the faerie struggling under the weight of its cage.

I’ve gotta say, the art description really sold me on the card, so great work. I’m not sure I would have put together what the -1/-1 counters represent. This is really cool flavorfully. Out of curiosity, why’d you do base power? If you didn’t want this to hit itself, it would have been probably better to just make it “Whenever another creature card yada yada”. (Though also, I kind of love the narrative created if it *can* hit itself, where it ends up trapped in its own cage)

Wandering Armory by @reaperfromtheabyss

Very good call on the sorcery speed clause. My biggest worry here is how good this creature is just as a creature, even ignoring the ability to move counters around. A 5 mana 2/5 with flying, first strike, lifelink, and vigilance is *a lot*. And that might even discourage you from moving the counters around, since it works so well on its own.

Lesson of Fangs by @real-aspen-hours

Very solid common. This could do a lot of great work- perhaps too much? Permanently granting lifelink isn’t done very much at common, cause if you put it on a big creature that could really make limited games go long. (You’ll also notice that lifelink is extremely rarely seen on big creatures at common for the same reason).

Cryovolver by @horsecrash

This is *really* cool. The volvers are a great candidate for this contest that not everyone might think of, since they don’t technically qualify but if they were made today they’d absolutely use keyword counters as you correctly assessed. I also really like the idea of a snow volver. Is this card just more of a one-off, in some snow commander deck? Is it a five card ally-colored cycle that all have the same snow ability? I’m intrigued by the possibilities.
