I had my players following bear tracks in the tundra in what was supposed to be a one-shot.

Me: So after a few minutes of following the tracks, you see them suddenly become erratic and going wildly around several of the massive crystals.

*Several players rolling dice later*

Me: You can see that the bear was clearly sprinting frantically about and Gyo{Owlin Ranger}, you can see that there are humanoid-like footprints in the mess.

Gyo, ooc: Yeti!

Me: Nope, these are much smaller than the yeti prints in the last session.

Zadkeil{Frosthorn Druid}, ooc: Werebear!

Me: No. Let me finish please. The humanoid prints appear to be chasing the bear.

The group decided to give chase now scared for the bear and calling said bear, Acrobear.

Me: After a short bit of running, you find a large set of splatters in the snow with the humanoid footprints heading off in increasingly larger strides or jumps before vanishing.

Everyone: What?

Me: You see bloodied bear prints heading the opposite direction.

Zadkeil: Acrobear no!

They followed to the trail to the entrance of a cave to see a very large polar bear dead, covered in deep claw marks. They asked me if they could use healing spells on the bear, only be told it was very dead.

Gyo, ooc: So how long has it been dead?

Zadkeil, ooc: It can't be very long.

Me: The bear is probably only a couple minutes dead.

Gyo, ooc: So you're saying whatever killed Acrobear could still be around!?

Me: Maybe, maybe not. That doesn't matter right now. There's a cave to explore. You could do that.

Gyo, clearly concerned: I don't want to!

Me: Get in the cave.

I feel sort of proud scaring the party as a first-time dm.

Remmanites

These strange animals were once assumed to be related to the Fluvictus and Lancetes, but in fact represent their own unrelated quest into the water. They are semi-aquatic, hunting at sea but frequently hauling themselves onto land to rest. Their ancestors originated in Amki and survived the glaciation event by taking to the water, which later allowed them to spread across the northern seas and reach coastlines of Ejoa and Faon. With blubbery bodies and webbed limbs, they are exquisitely adapted to the cold northern waters.

SeaDogs

Living in vast packs across the coastlines of Amki and northern Ejoa and Faon, SeaDogs are frequently seen sunning themselves on beaches and rocks. Although awkward on land, they are perfectly suited to swimming and can dive up to a thousand feet in search of Itchyomorphs and Hexapods. This is the most specious group of Remmanites. Unlike their relatives, SeaDogs are also found in freshwater, searching for food in rivers and lakes.

Ice Hyenas

These odd, solitary creatures dwell in the far north. With longer claws and stronger back limbs, they are surprisingly agile on land and can gallop up to 30 miles per hour. Although they primarily live around oceanic ice sheets and feed on aquatic animals, they can also be found in coastal tundras and will both scavenge and actively hunt prey such as young Frosthorns. In far north cultures, wearing the pelts of Ice Hyenas indicates power and strength, as only the best hunters could slay them.

One Remmanite took a very different path in life, evolving to be totally aquatic. With a streamlined body and four paddle-like fins, they are exceptionally adapted to living underwater. They were originally thought to be a strange offshoot of the Lancetes, but anatomical differences and subsequent DNA testing placed them within the Remmanites instead. Unlike the Lancetes, they are primarily solitary. Inhabiting the northern oceans, they cruise around feeding on Itchyomorphs, Hexapods, and other Remmanites. This might explain the more southern distribution of the Torpedo Whales, as competition between these similarly sized predators may have kept them from colonizing northern waters.

Tentacled Blindseals

Their name is somewhat misleading, as they are not truly blind, but they do have reduced eyesight in bright light. Although they must haul out onto shore to rest, mate, and bear young, they are truly at home deep beneath the waves. Diving to depths of up to a mile and staying underwater for nearly two hours, they search the seafloor for food with a combination of their night vision and long feelers. They are also the only group of Remmanites to venture down into the lower latitudes, along the coastlines of Ejoa and Faon.

okay!!! so i basically just wanted to share that i met the goal of 80k i set in january and just wrote the climax earlier this week !! which was very ~~emotional cries fight~~. i have about ~10-15k left to wind down (and honestly let everything else go wrong) and that’s kind of !!! for me. i might actually finish something (hopefully by the end of may).

HEY HERE’S A BIG ASS INTRODUCTION TO ALLL MY DND CHARACTERS (not the other ttrpg characters those are for later)

NAME: CRUNCH

RUNDOWN: an orc barbarian raised by human parents who later ran away from home because her school is racist and now she’s a performative trauma-ridden bounty hunter that doesn’t actually understand anything about orcs. edgelord supremo. also my first real pc ;v;

NAME: Orville Orvis Orwelle

RUNDOWN: a kalashtar sorcerer currently trying to pass as human. comes from a very rich family, but was kept a secret from the world because his mother had an affair with a kalashtar warrior and that’s where Orville came from. doesn’t really understand his powers, but his kalashtar spirit keeps giving him the urge to do good, an urge he also doesn’t understand.

NAME: Vasilisa ‘Vas’ Frosthorn

RUNDOWN: a dwarven warlock who thinks she’s a paladin. made a pact with a frost demon after he saved her life. she has slowly fallen in love with him, even though he pretty much only sees her as a tool. possessive and stubborn, needs some genuine affection in her life.

NAME: Jethro

RUNDOWN: a drow rogue who has some identity problems. raised in the Underdark, escaped after being caught stealing from the temple of Lolth they used to be a cleric at. escaping kind of gave them a breakdown, and now they despise anything relating to drows, including themselves. 

NAME: Pumpernickel Palimpsest

RUNDOWN: a halfling bard who goes with the flow. plays a guitar, a banjo, and a fiddle all at the same time under the name “Pumpernickel Palimpsest and the Mage Hand Band”. likeable, but often willing to go with whatever. currently trying to find out more about her family, as she has a sneaking suspicion that her father isn’t telling her everything there is about her history. 

NAME: Florizel Fagin

RUNDOWN: a firbolg druid who was adopted and raised by an elven woman. he was a member of the same druidic sect his mother was a part of, but they distrusted him because he was a firbolg. the leader of the sect attempted to curse florizel, but missed and his florizel’s mother instead. she never recovered, and now spends his time taking care of her, and trying to find some way to repair her mind. 

NAME: Wayward Prentiss

RUNDOWN: a winged tiefling cleric/bard who has a hard time deciding what to do with her time. the daughter of a very famous activist/hero in her community, she tries her best to find causes to fight for, but either gets distracted or leaves because she feels she will disappoint both them and the shadow of her father. very bad at making decisions.

RUNDOWN: a 10-year old gnome rogue, Bobble is a pickpocket who pretty much just wants money. although she’s young, she still has debts to clear with some pretty sketchy folks.

RUNDOWN: a high elf bard (college of swords) who is a criminal-turned-knife juggler. incredibly skilled, and holds no ill will toward her former employers. kind of a thrillseeker, and will do anything for a buzz.

NAME: Vindice

RUNDOWN: a hobgoblin fighter who was once the prince of a hobgoblin nation. betrayed by the man he thought of as his brother and exiled from his homeland. a very kind and good humored man, who believes honor is paramount. although he will extend his hand to any who may need it, his greatest desire is to build an army and return to his homeland in order to redeem his honor.

NAME: Ginwhistle Tavernacle

RUNDOWN: a tiefling monk (path of the drunkard) who used to be a huge playboy before his parents cut off his allowance and forced him to become a monk to try and teach him humility. he has not learned his lesson, and manages to mooch off his friends to get what booze he can get his hands on. basically every one of your fuck-up friends who “reeeeally needs your help just this ONCE, girl, like, i just need a coupla gold pieces so i can get a buzz going its FINNNEEEEEEE girl its FINEEEEEE”

Molingua

With the first two pairs of legs completely atrophied, these herbivores cannot rely on shredding claws to process their food. Instead, they have evolved a tooth-lined pouch within their pharyngeal jaws to grind tough plant matter before swallowing. More diverse in the past, they seem to have been recently out-competed by the even more efficient Unguloids, and now exist as a handful of odd, distantly related groups.

Bristletails

Pictured: the flametail, native to the temperate forests of northern Ejoa.

While many animals on Varin sport bristles that keep them warm, this group is the only one to have weaponized them. Like a porcupine, they have spiny bristles sticking up from their elongated tails, giving them a line of defense against predators. These small animals are generalist herbivores, rooting through the leaf litter for anything edible. Despite their appearance, they are also fantastic climbers and will bolt up a tree if threatened by a predator. They are commonly found around Labyrinth Forests.

Frosthorns

Pictured: the boreal Frosthorn, which lives in large herds on the tundras fringing the Amki forests.

Highly adapted to life in the barren tundras of Amki, the Frosthorn uses its horn to dig up roots and tubers, which are far more nutritious than the small plants that grow from them. They have also been seen consuming tubivores and scavenging dead animals, which likely supplements their diet when plants are scarce. They are the largest animals of the tundra and spend their time migrating with the yearly fluctuations of the ice caps.

Amki Giants

Pictured: the eastern giant, native to the southeast peninsula of Amki.

The largest land animals on Amki, these powerful creatures lurk in the boreal forests of the southwest, using their elongated bodies to reach the higher branches of trees. These are a very odd-looking Euconch, using only four legs to walk and the long third pair tucked up against their body to use for grasping branches and pulling them into reach. Although typically seen alone, these animals communicate over long distances with deep bellows, and the parents raise their offspring for several years. This indicates they may not be as solitary as previously believed.

Clubtails

Pictured: the yellow ridged clubtail, found across the warmer northern areas of the desert.

Native to the harsh, cold tundra desert of southern Axane, these creatures store excess fat in the tip of their tail, giving them a “clubbed” appearance. Despite its looks, there is no evidence that they actually use this as a weapon, nor would they need to as there are very few large predators living in this dry, frigid environment. Roaming the desert in large herds, these are the most numerous megafauna of southern Axane.

RUKA AND THIEU: CINEMATIC PARALLELS

a. on power

i. Ruka tipped his head back and exploded. 

For a moment, there was only darkness. All the sound had exited, and Ruka was in a vacuum, surrounded by nothing and no one but his shadows. He felt raw and powerful, as if something inside of him had unlocked and burst free, as if fire was licking at his veins.

ii. Flash and lightning cracked across the sky. Rain was in torrents around them, whipping his hair and clothes up. Thieu saw his necklace rise in another flash, silver in the storm and he had a sudden thought, a realization crashing down on him as thunder roared and rain dampened rising fires all around them.

I am the eye of the storm.

b. on freedom

i. We have been trapped for so long, his shadows whispered, and they were a cacophony, they were a chorus, and now you have set us free. Ruka did not feel the pain, he did not feel the anger; all he could feel was coldness and darkness and they were one, as if a snake had eaten its own tail and settled into his stomach. 

ii. “That means no more hiding, Mathieu. No more holding back. You are a Fairbone now, no, you are more than that. You will be my right hand man, and you will help me lead this era past its turbulent times and into peace. Tell me you understand.” 

c. on trust

i. Ruka whetted his throat, giving a small laugh. “I do not trust myself, and neither should any of you.” They did not know the self hatred that coated the words, the truth behind them. Ruka knew he was a liar, even if he did not lie in the ways humans did. 

ii. Blaise Goldbreeze gave him a long, considering look. “Should I believe you, Mathieu Fairbone?” 

“Probably not,” Thieu answered in the most vaguest but honest way that he could. “I’m a conman, my Queen. Tricks are my speciality.” He didn’t say, you should never trust me, because that wasn’t entirely true. Thieu was someone who ran with whatever side got him what he wanted the most; for the past couple of years, the Circus Arcana and Wren and Safiya had done that for him.

hello, lovely followers of this wip and people who clicked beneath the cut! i didn’t want to make another post and tag y’all again, so i figured i’d just put this here:

the first draft of fairbone is officially complete! after five months, it comes in at 91.5k and i’m very excited about this!! it’s officially the first wip i’ve finished that i’m super proud of. i don’t really know where to go from here, as there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done and woven into the story, so i’m sitting on it right now to try and think about that, but if anyone has tips, i’d love to here them!

anyways, this is just a thank you to y’all who stuck through this with me! i’m going to be reintroducing this wip soon and doing actual character profiles and the stuff for it - i do have a wip page, in the mean time (without the links yet though). thank you all so much!! i’m going to go cry in happiness now.

Personality:  

Thistlethorn is a prickly little madam with a sharp tongue and a hot temper likely to get her in trouble, since she’s very quick to act, but not as quick to think. She is pugnacious, but also tenacious, showing great loyalty and courage despite her age. She is a bold cat with a big heart for her tribe, looking up in huge admiration to her seniors and standing determinedly by her peers. She is a very good friend, who has tremendous energy and likes to spar and practice a lot with her friends for fun and to help them improve. However, she is loathing towards the other tribes and views them with contempt. However, to her friends, she has a very good sense of humor, loves jokes and pranks, and always enjoys mischief and cleverness, even if she is the butt of it. This only extends to her tribemates however. Mother: Frosthorn: longhaired silver and white bicolor mackerel tabby molly with icy blue eyes.
