It was good to have the touch of a man and not feel shame about it and to feel free. The attention to his throat and kisses had the sailor worked up. But he was getting these fucking boots off. So almost as a service he untied those boots knowing full well the other would need help, pulling them off along with any socks. Then he worked the last of his leathers off, sliding them off his legs which James immediately kissed. His skin was softer than he expected.

Fingers through his hair felt good, but that sudden clench was even better and it got a deep groan out of the ginger. Wasn’t as if he’d not done this before, and on a ship but this was different. That dominating pull had him bring his nose to nuzzle now at the warm flesh of his length, feeling the blood boil at his cheek. And the smell. The musky and manly smell of him was driving him wild. Women didn’t have this smell. So he curled his fingers around him, giving him a squeeze, getting a feel for him, slowly stroking as he simply watched and listened for any reaction. But he finally opened his mouth, moving to the tip of him, sucking that bulbous head between his lips so he could obey and taste his captain with his tongue.

Red hair spilled over his shoulders like a liquid, as he had rather long hair at this point which he very much loved. As soon as that shirt was off their lips locked and the soft content sound that spilled from him was swallowed by Killian’s lips.

Fuck, he loved this. It felt very freeing, to do this without worry that someone was going to find them and cart them off. He didn’t have to pretend to be who he wasn’t in Neverland. As soon as he grabbed his backside, James curled a leg around him. He had to, it was instinct. It was only when he needed to breathe that he’d managed to cast his eyes downward. From that moment on Charles had been trying to keep a closer eye on Flint. He felt like a stalker, but he knew he had something to do with the men going missing. Charles was in a ghastly amount of pain and bleeding, but the shirtless captain wasn’t one to be taken down easy. He charged his first mate and took him down to the ground with a grunting roar, assaulting him with his fists. It was a futile attack, but he got a few blows in before he was pulled off by two of his own men and kicked again. Now the men were just taking turns, violently stomping and kicking at his rubs and body, and Charles could feel them crack and fold in. He was struggling to breathe now as a bone perforated his lungs, and blood started flowing in. He was being choked to death by his own blood, beaten and stomped within an inch of his life, all because of her.

“ Any last words, Captain? “

Charles struggled to breathe, spitting out blood as he looked at the bastards above him. He growled, his fist clenched. He yelled, but his body wouldn’t let him, so it came out in a raspy gasp. “ I’m gonna fuckin— “ Cough. “ kill.. each one of you. “

“ Hard to do that when you’re fuckin’ dead, Captain!” The men roared with laughter.

Charles was going to throw another fist had Eleanor not stepped in the way, but it wasn’t like he was offended by the fact of nailing her with a hard one. He looked immediately pacifated for a moment, just staring into her eyes, almost unsure of what he’d just done because it was so fast. Her sassy words had it all flooding back though. “ You want him? “ He pointed to Flint. “ That fuck? He’s using you to get what he wants by flashing a smile and being nice. “ He said nice with such revulsion. “ And you’re weak willed enough to bend to his every fucking whim. “ He shouldn’t have said that, but just her rejection of him was painful enough. Some days he thought he couldn’t take it. Today was one of those days.

Before she could say a word Flint opened his mouth, his eyes searing hatred into his and sneering. “ Jealous? “ He scoffed, tried to play it off. No one touches what’s mine. “ I’m trying to protect her. I don’t trust you, she shouldn’t trust you. “ He reached out, put his hands on either of Eleanor’s shoulders, turning her to him. “ Ellie, five of my men have gone missing without a trace. I’d put my life on the fact he’s behind it. “ It was actually a bit pathetic how he was at the moment, but he was worried for her. He didn’t trust the educated man. Not one bit.

But that next phrase out of the redhead’s mouth stunned him. Sure, some people probably knew, but no one ever talked about it. Sometimes men needed to be with men. How does he.. His mind tried to process it. The fact that Charles didn’t even try to deny it said that it was all too true, but the words.. everything.. and how adoring Eleanor was of Flint just shook him. The fight fell out of him. Just then, he looked like a puppy that’s been kicked, eyes wide, shaky with a variety of emotions, unsure of himself. He needed to get her out of his system. He needed to get both of them out of his system.

As they stood staring at him for a moment, Charles spoke again, but it was softly, dare say lovingly to Eleanor. “ Fine. Choose him, but don’t expect me to help you. If you make a mess this time, you clean it up. “ Those words only spoke volumes of how often he had helped her behind the scenes, how many times she’d fucked up and he came to her rescue like the knight he was. He took one last look at Flint, at his mussed hair and a thought roamed in his head. Maybe he is better than me. Maybe I’m nothing. That was the voice of the scared little boy, a slave in that hell when he was young. It had reared its ugly head. With that, and another longing look at both of them, he took a step back and turned away, heading for the exit.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard one of her songs. It was summer 2006. My best friend Kamie had just gotten her learner’s permit. We were riding down the only highway in our tiny beach town in Kamie’s 1996 Jeep Cherokee with the windows down, salty ocean air messing up our hair, listening to our local country radio station Gator 107.9.

Everyone who knows me knows that I am a talker. But for once in my life, I fell silent. We both listened intently for the entire three minutes and fifty four seconds.

Now admittedly, I’m kind of an elitist when it comes to the music I choose to listen to because I’m so focused on incredible lyrics. A song is nothing without amazing lyrics. I’m a Beatlemaniac. I love Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, James Taylor—you get the picture. I’m that pretentious snob who’s like “I was born in the wrong decade” and “they don’t make music like they did in the 60s and 70s.” Hey, at least I’m self-aware, right?

I let Kamie choose the music of course since it was her car and while the other songs that came on the radio were fun and catchy, I wasn’t expecting to hear anything that would blow me away. Well I was blown away by the lyrics to that song. And I was even more blown away by the fact that the girl singing it appeared to be around our age. When the song concluded, the DJ said it was this young new musician Taylor Swift’s first single called “Tim McGraw.”

I never forgot that name. I bought her first album later when it was released that fall. I bought every subsequent album on release day. She made me feel like I should own my naturally curly hair and give my straightener a break. She made me feel like I should stand tall and rock heels with confidence even though I’m 5’9” and tower over everyone else. But most importantly, she made me feel like I wasn’t alone. Her lyrics were like reading my own diary—if I wasn’t ADHD and could actually sit still long enough to write a diary—back to myself. She was navigating the awkwardness that is high school and first loves and heartbreak just as I was, but writing about it and being open and honest and raw and vulnerable as she shared her experiences with the world through her music.

It’s funny how music has this strange and beautiful ability to take you back to exact points in time. I remember recording an embarrassing video that I hope never resurfaces of Kamie and me lip-synching to the 2009 Grammys performance of “Fifteen.” I remember dating for the first time and listening to “Our Song” and “Fearless” on repeat. I remember being heartbroken and listening to “White Horse” and “You’re Not Sorry” on repeat.

Speak Now came out when I was in my freshman year of college. I remember hearing “Mine” for the first time and having to pick my jaw up off of the floor because she sang about my life in a such scarily accurate way. My parents’ divorce happened a few years prior and I had developed deep rooted trust issues as a result of that so dating was hard. Hearing her write such a beautiful and optimistic song about a girl with trust issues due to her father’s wrongdoings made me hopeful for maybe potentially getting past that and finding love in the future (spoiler alert—I did and I’m happily married!). I still get chill bumps every time I listen to that song.

I remember studying abroad in London and dating the most beautiful man to ever walk the earth and repeatedly playing “Sparks Fly” on top MacBook speaker volume in my tiny flat, on my iPod while riding the tube, in the library studying, literally everywhere. I remember getting back to the States and meeting this guy I thought was perfect for me because of our electrifying witty banter and playing “Enchanted” nonstop but then being disappointed when things fell apart so all that “Enchanted” playing turned into “The Story of Us”. I remember dating this blue eyed boy who looked at me like I was from another universe and listening to “State of Grace” and thinking maybe he could be the one. I remember screwing him over and feeling bad about it and going “Back to December” all the time. Most importantly, I remember meeting this freckle-faced introverted but brilliant man at a concert and thinking “Everything Has Changed.” And it has. When my sister didn’t like him at first, I reminded myself that this love was “Ours.”

So many things change as time goes on. People change. You move cities. Friends come and go. But music is always a constant. And Taylor’s music has been there for me every step of the way. Every heartbreak. Every love. Every milestone. Taylor, I cannot thank you enough for your words. They mean so much to me and so many people.

i’ve now watched the last two eps of Black Sails s2 twice, and am Overcome. i have like 500 thoughts on the politics, characterization and plot, but right now i just wanna talk about this scene because it fuckin killed me. (p.s. sorry if this has already been covered by previous fans, but i haven’t seen s3-4 so i’m avoiding the Black Sails tags to make sure i don’t get spoiled!)

s2 is where i started obsessing about the show’s love of narrative and storytelling. Flint & Silver both gain power because they tell persuasive stories. Vane uses Abigail’s diary as a distraction tactic in the finale. the Urca Gold is NEVER just introduced as “a fuckload of gold,” it’s accompanied by the story of the gold. it might as well be imaginary, along with each specific future the main players want to create with that gold. 

“civilization” is the story Lord Ashe and the British tell themselves every day, and it’s even more fictional than Eleanor and Flint’s goals for Nassau. their utopian future hasn’t happened yet, but Ashe lives inside “civilization” every day, and it’s a fucking hellscape of slavery, capitalism, and brutal laws.

in ep 2x9, we explicitly see how Flint built his persona as a pirate. it’s one of the many things Black Sails has in common with the Lymond Chronicles IMO, partly due to Flint and Miranda’s love of books. they’re the only recreational readers among people who either didn’t have access to education, or have no interest in literature. it’s similar to how Lymond (a mercenary with an educated aristocratic background) was respected but socially isolated from his men, partly by class and partly due to differing goals and interests. in Flint’s case, i recall that scene when Dufresne the accountant became captain of Flint’s crew, and Flint was weirdly disappointed that Dufresne didn’t read the books in the captain’s cabin.

it’s also clear that Flint is unusually good at branding himself as a pirate captain. he’s a brilliant strategist, but there are other captains (ie Ned Low, or even Vane) who better fit the image of Most Dangerous Pirate. still, Flint is the one people talk about (and the one Governor Ashe wants to arrest) because he knows how to spin a story. that includes his name, which he borrowed from an anecdote that had ~literary significance~ to his self-image as the protagonist of his own narrative. (something else he shares with Lymond, i think.)

Miranda Hamilton is the only possible audience for that story, not just because she knew him as James McGraw, but because she’s the only one who shares his love of literature. she’d fully understand his mindset when choosing Flint as his new name. and, of course, that scene cements the tragedy of the finale, because Flint has finally acknowledged that he hates the image he constructed around himself... before diving straight back into that persona, with seemingly no hope of return.

Charles rolled his eyes when he noted the peace and quiet. But then came the serious voice and he knew he was in trouble. He shouldn’t have given a damn, but those days were in the past. He actually cared about this man now. He cared about his opinions, about his thoughts. He hated when he was truly pissed at him though most of the time he was pissed in return, he hated when he was sad and he hated that he seemed to disappoint him at times right now. Their relationship was still so fresh. Their committed relationship anyway, and it was an adjustment.

He wanted to say something but next thing he knew he felt those fingers in his hair which brought his eyes to flutter to a close. He wondered how James even liked it at times since he basically had dreadlocks from lack of combing but he said he loved it anyway and Charles liked the attention even though it was brief. But then he smirked, opening his eyes to look up at him. “ Usually you remark about me not keeping my clothes on and now you want me to be naked. “ Too bad it was because he was sick, but he’d get undressed. Well. He had said light clothing, but any coaxing for him to be wild and naked instead was sound in his book. “ Help me. “ It wasn’t a question, it was a demand as he started working off his shirt with a groan. He threw it on the floor with a thud, moving to stand but then he collapsed quickly back down on the couch when his knees buckled. Maybe he really was sicker than he even realized, huffing a bit in aggravation.

“ Please. “ Now came the question as he cast an almost begging glance to his lover. He didn’t want him to even leave to get the doctor. Surely he’d get better on his own with just James keeping him company. .. but then he might get a bit frustrated at his next answer. “ Haven’t had anything since yesterday. Just too tired to bother. “ At least this time he didn’t hide that and was forthcoming with the information.

Flint didn’t take anything lying down, so why would he just stop arguing with him? Charles wasn’t shocked at all when he told him off, but when he noted his nose was running he seemed surprised. He felt like such trash that he hadn’t even paid attention to it and now he lifted his fingers to see if indeed his nose was runny. He sniffed a bit when he clearly saw his fingers were wet, realizing a moment then maybe he was a bit sicker than he thought.

He just.. didn’t get sick. Rarely ever, and when it did happen he just managed. When he said he’d barely said a thing, Charles smirked a bit confidently. “ Sounds like you miss the sound of my voice. “ Then he sneezed again and James noted what a stubborn fuck he was. .. that last sneeze hurt his head a bit too much and he groaned. The first little bit of relenting he’d shown. When he brought him the handkerchief he wiped his fingers and his nose. Huh. This was terribly soft a thing, even for Flint but he wasn’t complaining at the moment. .. but if he expected it back he’d have to pry it from his cold dead hands.

Charles sighed heavily in defeat. “ My fucking head hurts, I can’t breathe through one nostril, it’s fucking hot and my body hurts all over. “ He slowly raised his eyes. “ There. Satisfied? “ But it was hard to stay mad at an obstinate Vane when he sneezed yet again and let an open wince escape. Him showing some pain for once sure as hell meant he felt awful. And he groaned with it, laying more against the back of the couch so it took his weight instead of having to hold his muscular frame upright.
