Let’s talk how about Chrom and Robin’s bond evolved over time

With everyone clamoring over the new emblem I wanted to take a look back how we got here with their relationship and why I think at this point Chrobin is the intended or inferred Chrom pairing when it didn’t used to be.

In 2012 we got Fire Emblem Awakening, and as Chrom was related to Marth, his inferred pairing was Sumia a pegasus knight as a nod to Caeda, Marth’s canon wife. Granted because part of Awakening’s charm is you could pair anyone up, you didn’t have to pair Chrom up with Sumia if you didn’t wish to. But to IS she was the intended choice.

She had special scenes with Chrom and was the most likely to end up paired with him if you weren’t gunning for a specific wife for him

And you see her here in the opening with Lucina

Robin is you, the avatar, they don’t even have official art, just them with a hood

They had a canon design what we all know now but it wasn’t really used. And that should have been it as far as IS was concerned. Awakening was their last hurrah. And then FE blew up.

Robin’s canon design is now getting used, both the male and female version are now in Smash Bros. Then we have Warriors and Heroes and the Awakening cast shows up more. But not Sumia. Perhaps it’s because she’s not popular or the people flocked to Cordelia instead but she is the pegusus knight everyone loves. Sumia isn’t even in Warriors or the base FEH she gets added much later to FEH only with other less popular Awakening characters.

It’s here when FE became more maintstream I believe that IS changed their tune on Sumia being the intended wife and retconed it. I fully think Sumia was dropped and they no longer had an intended pairing for him all because she just wasn’t popular. Him and Robin were close of course they always were, obviously some would see it as friendship others would see it as something more the usual nothing really changed there.

And then 2022 ten full years after Awakening’s release...this happened

Couple things here. I fully believe the reason Chrom was paired with MRobin here instead of FRobin is for two big reasons reasons.

1) If they paired him with FRobin it canonizes a pairing so MRobin is the safer option, FEH doesn’t usually pair men and women unless they’re already a pairing. So MRobin got paired with Chrom and FRobin was on her own but she still has lines about how much Chrom meant to her.

2) MRobin is the more popular Robin as has been shown every year in CYL and he’d even win next year

So Chrom and Robin were always close it was a no brainer to make them a duo unit, they picked the male version on a very family oriented banner.

That said some of these lines...well let’s just say if a man and a woman were saying that to each other there would be no doubt here. Imagine if this Robin was the female version

Robin: There's Lissa, Emmeryn, Lucina, Frederick... I think we've got gifts for everyone. Don't we? Chrom: Well, all but one. What would you like your gift to be, Robin? Robin: What? Me? Snippet from their duo convo. Usually when someone gives flowers it’s considered a pretty romantic gesture I’ve heard plenty of people call this alt playfully the gays and yeah this is very strong.

FRobin even comments on them in one of her lines.

“That man with Chrom is a Robin from another world, right? They get along so well, I'm almost jealous...“

There was no need for that line at all, we can tell from their lines how flipping close they are but they felt the need to have another character comment on it in base lines

I do believe MRobin was used not to canonize a pairing...at first. And then they gave up because it looked like people really liked it going even further in the next year.

In Awakening Chrom and Robin refer to themselves as two halves of the same whole which is already a loaded term. But it’s never been used after and was just part of the game

Enter the next time they pair up as the Emblem of Bonds which brought that back for the first time since 2012, in full force

Correct me if I’m wrong but no one besides them have referred to each other as their other half in Awakening

Lucina does it in Engage. For reference other half means husband, wife or partner (romantic). I think after the Valentine’s alt they decided sure why not and now they’re really going in with Robin being Chrom’s other half when they only touched the term once past Awakening in a FRobin cipher card. Other half in Engage is Robin and he pops up when engaged with Chrom to mix magic with the attack. I don’t doubt you can mean a friend with this term but when paired with everything else they say to each other, it’s pretty strong evidence it’s further than friendship.

Okay now for the the ultimate Robin is now Chrom’s intended partner view, Legendary Robin also released this year

“Tactician of Ylisse. Celebrated as Exalt Chrom's other half in the legends that followed their exploits. Appears in Fire Emblem Awakening. “

I saw some people argue exalt could mean Lucina too but no it doesn’t, it clearly means Chorm it says so and if you didn’t believe that, we got a map that was the two called Chrom and his other half. Which is Robin.

His art also references his other half status, he now wears blueish green jewelry which stands for Chrom and the brand of the exalt is on his chest plate

Finally in his damage art he once again has the symbol of the exalt formed in magic.

And a ring, some have argued it’s his clothes but usually the magic gauntlets he wears are on his middle finger and not under his gloves; pretty sure it’s a ring, it’s even on the ring finger of his left hand, where you generally put a wedding ring.

All this together is some very strong evidence, but put it with everything else they’ve done since last year and it’s clear to me, IS now is pushing Chrom and Robin as the intended pairing. Not canon like Marth and Caeda or Alm and Celica, but intended like they do with Eliwood and Ninian and some others I’m probably forgetting. And because MRobin is who they use and their “canon” sort of like FCorrin is the “canon” Corrin, IS is strongly hinting at MChrobin

Which fascinates me, we went from Chrom with a intended implied wife to scrapping it and pretended it never happened to this, Chrom with an intended husband. Him and his best friend, both two guys, very much in love. In ten years IS changed it’s mind on the intended canon pairing that isn’t even possible in the base game. They are a fate defying duo, the emblem of bonds, the exalt and his other half, two halves of the same whole and they are showing that in symbolism harder than ever. I think that’s really cool

To end this I’m aroace and see romance a little differently from the amatonormic norm Chrom and Robin could just be really good friends lord knows I also think friendship should be just as important as romance BUT if they were, it’s very clear they are each others most important person over any wife they might separately have.  But even that doesn’t follow a typical heteronormative relationship no? Chrom and Robin’s bonds are so strong they transcend the concept of romance and friendship as we know it, there is no name for the type of love they share it’s beyond us.

But what about Lucina? (and Morgan) In a world with magic, dragons, people dying and coming back to life, time travel and more the idea of two guys somehow having a child is no longer far fetched at all really, or even surrogates exist.

Also they act like kind of like dads with her and it’s really cute

Now granted IS could remake Awakening and MRobin will still not be able to marry Chrom and this whole analysis would have been for naught but I think if they do remake it they’ll add it. Look at how many people have been introduced to them just through Heroes and Engage you don’t think people are going to want to pair up the exalt and his other half in their game?

To sum it up, yes there literally is no heterosexual explanation for where IS has taken this. It wasn’t originally the intended pairing but it sure is now, I don’t think there is any room for denial anymore until we see what they do with a remake.

Who wakes up first?

Robin does but neither normally sleeps in super late

Who is grumpiest in the morning?

Honestly neither. Robin is alway a slightly morbid cheerful and Franky is full of energy right away

Who cooks breakfast?

Franky does more often but they both cook sometimes. He likes to bring her breakfast while she’s reading

Who serves the other breakfast in bed?

Sometimes Franky likes to wake up extra early to make it for her. She also makes it for him sometimes because it always makes him happy

Who suggests the skip work and stay home?

Franky does more frequently. On the occasion the Robin suggests it he can never say no

Who falls asleep on top of the other?

They often fall asleep leaning against each other. Robin is the one laying on Franky though because he’s huge and doesn’t want to crush her

Who always has to be touching the other?

They both love to hold hands and lean against each other but Franky tends to be the one to instigate it

Who stays up until 2 reading?

Robin definitely. Franky often tells her he’s sad she’s not cuddling him so convinced her to come to bed and get some sleep

Who kisses their partner while they're sleeping?

They both do. If they other is asleep they can’t resist softly kissing the other on the forehead

Who is most adventurous?

Franky is more out right adventurous, loudly yelling about where he wants to go but Robin is just as excited. She wants to learn about and see everything. They love going places together

Who is most protective?

Everyone thinks it would be Franky but it’s Robin. I’m not going to elaborate on that you just have to trust me

Who cares too much?

Honestly I don’t think either of them would get too caught up caring about every little detail

Who is most competitive?

They a both there for a good time and are happy whether they win or lose

Who sings in the shower?

Both of them. Franky is loud about it, Robin’s is sweet and pretty. They both like hearing each other sing

Who is more likely to get naughty in inappropriate places?

Robin. She has abused her power to do it on occasion

it started in december 2021 as a joke with my bf who wanted zoro to be with robin and when I saw that scene in Water 7/Enies Lobby of them on the sea train I was like "honey I tell you Robin would choose to fuck that guy over zoro any day" and then we both noticed how much chemistry they both actually had. At some point we were both looking at each other and the tv back and forth being like "did you fucking see that" and I literally squaked when the CBT scene happened. So yeah I started shipping them to annoy my bf and I got really hooked by them because of their chemistry, the way they are pretty much opposites personality-wise but share a pretty specific experience to bond deeply, the way Franky reminds Robin of Saul with his words and actions and how that makes her reflect on her life and think of him as a treasure, how they both relate to the other strawhats as their parents, how they know each other so well they can basically predict what the other one is going to say, how he's always close to her and they're both the first ones to protect each other, how even the animators in TOEI ship them so much that they add in little scenes to make situations a bit more romantic (also! knowing that Oda did personally add things in the anime that were not in the manga because he didn't have time or because he forgot makes me wonder how much of those anime frobin scenes were just TOEI animators being silly and goofy or Oda being like "yeah I do kinda like a little romance"), and the way they feel so, so real. I just love them so much -I'm pretty obsessed ngl- and it is a ship that brings me so much joy. also I love frobin because they're basically canon but not technically so yeah I can actually win silly debates online and feel like the best of the worst type of people online lol

It's more of a causal thing. I love the content that other creators make of this ship, some of is so cute and soft that how can you NOT like it? Plus Nico Robin deserves to have good things in her life.

Honestly I just love them. I fell out of love with One Piece but they keep me coming back. They're wholesome and good and bonkers and amazing. Overall completely underappreciated!

I love the smart goofball and smart goth dynamic. She's always tired of his shit, but is always amused. He's madly in love and in awe of her brilliance. I also like the idea that they could be romantic, platonic, or kinky.

I just think they are so very in love and nothing could convince me otherwise

         My 2020 Writer Wrap-up 

I spent my day doing this instead of working on my WIPs… why am I like this?

Anyway, it’s under the cut because this turned out to be really long but it’s kinda fun. Sorry for posting this on my writing blog but considering it’s about my year in writing it seemed kinda fitting but also another reason it’s under the cut is so you can ignore if you’re only here for writing.

I didn’t tag anyone, but I implore you to do it! It’s so fun and please tag me! I wanna read them!

It really depends on my mood. I’m kinda down for all types and have written them all, but I don’t post some of my sadder stuff.

But my favourite has to be Straw-hat madness mixed in with romance. It’s fun to write and adds more flavour.

Which fic of yours was the hardest to write?

Has to be ‘Delayed’ and ‘Is it okay if I take my time’. Neither of them really wanted to be written and I had to wrangle them more than my other fics.

Which was the easiest?

‘Black Cat’, I’ve never had a story that just flowed through my fingers like that since, ‘Potato peeling’, ‘Feel the burn’, ‘The stars will guide you’. So really, excluding Black Cat, anything that’s quite light and fluffy. Don’t have to watch out for plot, you see.

Favourite story you’ve ever written?

This sounds like such a cop out, but I love all of my stories. I’ve written every single one for a reason and they’ve scratched the itch in my head.

But, if I have to pick (and yes, I will pick multiple, one from each ship) it’s ‘Delayed’ and “I know you’re tired (Why don’t we go back home)’.

Do you write from start to finish or do you hop around?

The way I write has changed a lot over the course of the year I’ve been writing again. I used to write start to finish but I hop around now. Write the scene(/s) I’m really feeling and build or connect from there. Found it helps me write quicker and solve any plot blocks.

Have you ever deleted a published fic?

Nope and I never plan to. My older stuff on FFN is probably frustrating to people as it’s not finished but I like to keep it as a reminder of how far I’ve come.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever received?

It was before I got back into writing fanfic again and I was reading a Tumblr post that basically said none of this matters. Whether your fanfic is amazing or awful, it literally doesn’t matter because at least one person will love it and cherish it. It helped me a lot because I used to get so hung up on the reviews/attention when I was younger that I lost sight of what I really enjoyed.

Also, to write how you want to write. Don’t listen to the rules. Rules are made to be broken and when you start to ignore them, you end up producing your best pieces. I agree with this wholeheartedly. I find myself doing a mixture of both and it’s helped a lot.

Another was by a lovely reviewer fairly recently. I was starting to beat myself down again like I did when I was younger, it may have come across, and they just reminded me this is for fun, no one is expecting me to be an award-winning writer and that this is for fun. I remind myself of this constantly and I’ve never looked back since.

Sorry, loads of advice but I use it a lot to keep me in the right mind frame and remind myself that I write to escape life.

What’s the worst?

Anything that’s the opposite of the above. I remember reading a post about grammar etc and I do use that/read them to improve my writing but the tone of it was judgemental and it irked me.

Have you ever collabed with another writer?

No, but I’d absolutely love to if it was the right person.

How many WIPS do you have right now?

*sobs* So, so many. Some of them I’ve used to get me out of writers block and probably won’t ever post but some others are WIPs that I feel in love with and then promptly fell back out of love with. I’ll work on those again at some point.

I’ve got about four right now that I’m actively working on (it helps me to jump about sometimes).

Story you are most proud of?

It’s always going to be ‘Black Cat’. I go back and read it and cringe at the wording/grammar etc but it was my first ever big, plotted story that just swept me away for over a month. I lived in that world and I was so sad when I finished it.

There’s another huge one I’m working on and I think I’ll be proud when I finish that, but we’ll see. This one’s a bit harder.

Best review you’ve ever gotten?

I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to pick one. Honestly, I love every single review, obviously I love the more detailed ones, but it always gets me that someone took the time to not only read my stuff but also leave lovely words! So nope, not singling any of them out. Just a huge thank you to everyone that leaves them.

Worse review you’ve ever gotten?

Now, this I will do. They are so far and few between (there’s literally none). I can only think of like three?

But I think one of them basically reviewed that it was an awful ship… that was it. It didn’t even upset me, I laughed. Because they took the time to say that, but didn’t criticise the plot or my writing, so I’m taking it as a win that they enjoyed everything else but the ship.  

Do you reread your own stories?

Hell yeah, I do! I reread them all the time. I write most of them for myself anyway, so I always enjoy it… and I use it to pick up where I could improve.

Do you want to be published some day?

Nope, but I have no plans of leaving fanfic behind. I enjoy it too much.

Favourite character to write?

Nami. Goes without saying.

Least favourite character to write?

God, don’t come at me. But Franky and Brook. I just can’t grasp much from them. Wish I could figure out Franky so I could write some Frobin.

Do you set yourself deadlines or goals?

Hmmm, occasionally. It’s only if I’m writing for an event or certain holiday, otherwise not really.

Is there a trop you’ve never written but want to try?

So many and I think about it all the time, normally when I’m thinking of fic ideas.

When you get to a tough bit, or halfway through when you’ve had enough but you also want to finish it.

Dialogue. I have so much fun writing dialogue. And descriptions and thoughts.

Finally posting it and sharing it with everyone. Especially when it’s a piece I’m excited about.

Monochrome

Written for @rudimentaryflair for @opvalentines 2020!  Canonverse, Soulmate AU  ZoSan, side Frobin, mention of aroace Luffy 

The left eye held your eye color, and the right eye held your soulmate’s. When you first made eye contact with your soulmate, your right eye would change to its own color. That was what Kuina had told Zoro long ago. He never questioned it at the time, didn’t ask what that word “color” meant, but he did check his eyes in a mirror after that. They were identical as always. 

Kuina died with heterochromia. Somewhere in the world, her soulmate would live on with two brown eyes, one lighter than the other. 

“Sensei,” Zoro said one day after a frustrating training exercise. “What’s color?” 

Koshiro was taken aback by the question, and struggled to answer, eventually standing, leaving, and then returning with two large leaves. “Do you see the difference between these?” 

“Sure.” Zoro pointed to one. “This one’s darker.” 

“Yes. This one is red, and this one is green. Red and green are two colors.” 

Zoro was stumped. “Then, is everything just different shades of red and green?” 

Koshiro let the leaves flutter away in the wind and placed his hands in his lap. “Zoro, you may be color blind.” 

“What’s that?” 

Zoro only sort-of understood after Koshiro did his best to explain it to him. Afterwards, he looked at his eyes in the mirror again. According to Koshiro, colors would almost always have different shades of lightness and darkness, even in his “monochrome” vision (Zoro struggled to pronounce the word, even in his head), but his eyes were both the same shade as always. 

And that was fine. Zoro knew some people didn’t have soulmates, something else Kuina had whispered to him, and that was fine. He put down the mirror and folded his arms. No soulmate meant no one getting in the way of his dream.

When Zoro locked eyes with the dark-eyed boy wearing the straw hat, he narrowed his eyes. Those eyes, full of youth and optimism, had changed to a lighter shade, the same one Zoro always saw in the mirror. 

“Hey,” he said while they were sailing away. “I’ve got a question.” 

“Shoot,” the boy, Luffy, said. 

“Your eyes, they changed color, didn’t they? But mine are . . .” 

“Oh, that! Don’t worry about that.” Luffy grinned. “Someone told me it means I don’t have a romantic soulmate, but I have a bunch of platonic ones. My eyes change color all the time if I make eye contact, and they change back after a while.” He stretched, flopping around in the boat. “It doesn’t make anyone else’s eyes change. Yours didn’t.” 

“Okay,” Zoro said, staring up at the sky.

They picked up two more, a navigator with an eye for money and a sniper with a mouth for lies. After bumping into some old friends, they reached a seafaring restaurant called the Baratie, and Zoro was itching for a fight. When a waiter with hair covering one side of his face started to serve them, he made eye contact with Zoro, and his eyes widened. Usopp and Nami looked between them, mouths open. 

“What?” Zoro said, scratching his head. 

“Oh, fuck this,” the waiter said, glowering at Zoro. He seized Luffy around the neck. “Come on, chore boy, back to the kitchen.” 

As soon as they left, Nami and Usopp rounded on Zoro. 

“What was that about?” Usopp demanded. 

“What was what?” 

“Why didn’t you say anything to him?” 

“Huh?” 

“Didn’t you see . . . ?” Nami shook her head. “You’ll figure it out. You poor soul.” 

“Figure what out?” 

“You are a tragic, tragic man, Zoro,” Usopp cried. 

“You looking for a fight?”

The cook Sanji ended up joining their crew, somehow, and he seemed to love picking on Zoro. Every time Zoro so much as tried to speak to him, Sanji would snap and badger until they were sparring, scowling, and seething. During one of their strange matches, Sanji’s hair flew up, and Zoro caught a brief glimpse of a matching set of eyes. 

“Do you not have a soulmate?” he asked. Sanji stumbled, caught off guard, and Zoro pinned him to the ground with a sword next to his head. 

“I wish I didn’t,” Sanji spat. 

Zoro frowned. “So . . . you do. You met them, and you didn’t get along? Isn’t that strange?” 

Sanji narrowed his eyes. “What the fuck are you talking about? Don’t you know?” 

“I don’t know. I know I don’t have a soulmate.” 

Sanji brought his legs up to his torso and kicked hard, sending Zoro flying. As Zoro sat up from the railing, rubbing his head, Sanji yanked his sword out from the deck and tossed it to him. “Yeah,” Sanji said, turning away as Zoro caught the sword. “I guess I don’t, either.”

It had been a perfectly reasonable thing to do. His legs had been stuck in wax. The wax was unbreakable. His legs were breakable. Therefore--- 

“You’re an idiot.” 

Zoro winced as Sanji stuck the needle into his flesh again. “That’s my business,” he said through gritted teeth. 

“It becomes my---our business when it affects the crew.” Sanji jabbed the needle in again, perhaps a bit harder than he needed to. “I hate you.” 

Zoro folded his arms, staring at Sanji. Sanji looked up again, meeting his eyes, and looked back down. 

“I hate you,” Sanji repeated. 

“Yeah.” Zoro wiggled his toes, regaining feeling in his feet. “I know. I don’t know why you do, but I know.” 

Sanji flinched and snapped off the string, standing. “Rest, and don’t fucking try anything stupid,” he said. “Scratch that. Don’t stand up for at least an hour. I’ll bring you soup.” 

Zoro stared after him, and for once, he listened. 

~ 

“What’d you do to get hurt this bad?” Zoro said, tapping Sanji’s back and making him wince in pain. 

“None of your goddamn business,” Sanji said through gritted teeth. “The mountain climb was tougher than it looked.” 

Elsewhere on the deck, Luffy and Usopp were throwing their new crewmate, Chopper, into the air. Zoro and Sanji watched them in silence. 

“Hey,” Sanji said. “Did you . . . growing up, did you want to meet your soulmate?” 

“I told you, I don’t have one,” Zoro grumbled. “But I never wanted one, either.” 

“You don’t make any sense, moss-hair,” Sanji said, folding his arms. 

“Moss . . . ?” Zoro rubbed the top of his head, his hair smooth and silky and not at all like the rough moss he’d felt on trees. “What are you talking about?” 

“Boy, you really are dumb. What were you saying?” 

Zoro glowered at him. “I never wanted a soulmate. I didn’t want destiny getting in the way of my dream.” 

“That’s---” 

“Falling in love is a different story, though. That’s my choice. And I won’t let the person I choose to love, if anyone, get in the way of my dream.” 

“Hm.” Sanji shifted, wincing again. Nami and Vivi chatted with Chopper, pulling him away from Luffy’s hyperactivity. 

“What about you?” 

Sanji sighed “I wanted to meet my soulmate more than anything,” he said, scowling. “I wanted to meet that beautiful lady who I was destined to be with. But then everything went wrong.” 

“Wrong how?” 

“You’re just winning the prize for biggest moron today, aren’t you?” Sanji snapped, standing. He fell down and tried to cover up his pain when Chopper looked over in concern. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.” 

“I don’t.” 

Sanji scowled, but his face softened as he met Zoro’s eyes again. “I hate you,” he said, yet again. 

Zoro’s chest hurt. “I know.” 

Sanji was silent. He soon stood again, using the ship railing for support this time. “Want something to eat?” 

“Booze.” 

~ 

Zoro didn’t hate Sanji, but he hated the way Sanji spun hearts around women, and acted so stupid with them. He hated how Sanji spoke to him, and refused to make eye contact, and did his best to put contempt behind every word. Even now, Sanji was crooning over Robin, the suspicious woman who was their newest crewmate. 

“Oh, Cook-san,” she said as he melted before her. “Have you met your soulmate?” 

For an instant, Zoro thought he saw Sanji look at him. 

“Yes, unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out,” Sanji said sweetly. “And you haven’t, Robin-chan, my dear?” 

“Correct. But that’s my business.” 

“Of course, of course, forgive me,” Sanji crooned. He turned, Robin watching him go with one dark eye and one light, and he bumped into Zoro. 

“The fuck do you want?” he muttered, avoiding looking directly at him, as always. 

“Nothing,” Zoro said, rolling his eyes. Sanji pushed past him and went into the kitchen, slamming the door shut. Zoro spotted Robin staring at him and raised an eyebrow. “What?” 

“Nothing,” she said, looking away. 

Zoro didn’t hate Sanji, but he hated that Sanji didn’t love hated him. 

~ 

There Zoro was, waking up from Enel’s lightning blast, and there Sanji was close to him, still unconscious. He stared at him for what must have been too long, because suddenly Usopp was saying, “He got hit twice. He saved me and Nami.” 

“Oh,” Zoro said. He scooted towards Sanji and pressed his ear to his chest, sighing when he heard the arrhythmic heartbeat. Looking up, he saw Usopp staring at him, and said, “What?” 

Usopp rolled his eyes and looked away. Zoro looked back at Sanji’s face, and brushed some ash out of his hair, his fingers lingering on his cheek. 

~ 

Something happened during the Davy Back Fight. Something happened to Sanji. The way he looked at Zoro when he asked for his help during the Groggy Ring battle, with that stupid ball strapped to his head. The way he slapped Zoro’s shoulders and back during the following celebration party. The way he gave Zoro tentative smiles, as if testing the waters, and the silly way he grinned when Zoro smiled back. 

“I hate you,” Sanji said that evening, joining Zoro in the crow’s nest that evening with a bottle of wine. 

“Yeah,” Zoro said, looking away. He and Sanji were still covered in bruises from their battle, dark and light patches across their limbs and torsos. 

“But I also don’t hate you.” 

“Oh?” Zoro’s heart lifted as he looked at Sanji, his chest hurting again but in a completely different way. 

“Yeah. Do you hate me?” 

“No.” Zoro took the offered bottle, taking a drink straight from the mouth. “I never did.” 

“Huh.” Sanji looked down, blinking hard, and brought a hand up to his suddenly bright eyes. “Huh. Is that so?” 

“What’s up with you?” 

Sanji looked up, swallowing back tears. “You’re just a grade-A moron, aren’t you?” 

“I’m not psychic. What are you talking about?” 

“Keep the bottle.” Sanji stood. “I’ll come to relieve you in time. See you.” 

He vanished down the ropes, and Zoro lifted his head, staring up at the dark, dark sky covered in pale, pale dots.

With their journey through Enies Lobby and Water 7 complete, the Strawhats had lost three treasured crewmates, one for good, and gained three, one brand-new. It wasn’t long before Franky and Robin were performing public displays of affection, nothing more daring than pecks on the cheek and yet things that once would have surely driven Sanji to tears with jealousy. As it was, though, he merely gave them thoughtful glances at most. 

“Aren’t you soulmates?” Usopp asked them one day as Zoro lingered nearby and Sanji served them cold drinks, setting Robin’s down lovingly upon a coaster and slamming Franky’s into his hand. 

“We’re not sure,” Robin admitted. Her eyes hadn’t changed from the moment she had threatened them in the glow of the remains of Igaram’s ship: One was light, and one was dark. 

“I had to rebuild my eyes while modifying my body,” Franky explained. “It’s a shame, but I don’t remember the exact colors they were. In any case, since they’re super-artificial and the same color, they wouldn’t change with eye contact.” 

“So, we’re not sure,” Robin repeated. “But we love each other, and if he’s not my soulmate and I meet them one day, they’ll have to put up with him as well.” 

“What do you mean, put up with?” Franky demanded. 

Zoro stared at Sanji from across the deck, looking away as soon as he noticed.

Thriller Bark brought them a zany new member of the family, a talking skeleton who was older than dirt and far too cheery. Thriller Bark brought them a dangerous new enemy, a Warlord with the ability to repel just about anything. Thriller Bark brought them a Zoro who claimed to have lost his memory of his fight with Kuma, but who remembered the sleeping face of his captain, the cold eyes of his enemy, and the desperate, pained face of his . . . 

Zoro thought he had finally escaped. Between Chopper trying to mummify him in bandages and the others badgering him to take it easy, he thought he had found refuge in the library, where no one would think to look for him. He lay on his back, pedalling his feet in the air to stretch his legs, as he’d been unable to sneak his weights into the room without drawing attention to himself. 

“There you are.” 

He groaned and dropped his legs as Sanji entered. “Can’t I have peace for one minute?” he said, sitting up. He frowned, seeing Sanji’s face. “What is it?” 

“I don’t hate you,” Sanji said. 

“Oh,” Zoro said, his chest hurting in that good way just hearing the words. “Right. And?” 

“I tried to hate you, Zoro. I really did.” Sanji sat next to him, staring at the floor. “I didn’t want to feel this way about you. I wanted to feel this way about a pretty girl. But I can’t help it. Zoro, I love you. You’re a fucking callous moron, and I don’t know if you love me, too, but---fuck, you have every right not to after the way I’ve treated---” 

“I do love you.” 

Sanji looked up at him, lips parted and breath shallow. “But you---” 

“I love you,” Zoro repeated. “You’ve always been a bitch, but that was the only thing---I can’t help it.” He looked down, wiggling his toes on the floor and staring at the scars on his shins. “I think I’ve loved you for a while. Maybe since I realized the only thing I really hated about you was that you didn’t love me.” 

“But I do love you. I really tried not to,” Sanji repeated, running his hands through his hair in frustration. “I can’t help it, either. Especially with you spouting off those nasty words about not having a soulmate---” 

“I don’t have a soulmate.” 

“Fine. Whatever you say. But you love me, right?” 

Zoro nodded. 

“Then that works for me.” Sanji touched Zoro’s shoulder. “When you were . . . just lying there, unconscious . . . I realized I had to tell you as soon as you woke up. We live dangerous lives. I had to tell you as soon as possible.” 

Zoro smiled, placing his hand over Sanji’s on his shoulder, his heart soaring through the sky. “No regrets, right?” 

Sanji held Zoro’s cheek in one hand, looking him in the eyes. “No regrets.” 

~ 

Sabaody brought them turmoil, and a crew torn apart. The war brought them pain, and news of a bloodline with an early demise. 

The next two years brought them patience, and forced it upon them, day by day. 

~ 

Zoro spotted a familiar head of pale hair in the distance, and grinned, jumping off of the broken ship to stride towards him. 

“I liked you better without the goatee,” he said, stopping in front of Sanji. 

Sanji looked him up and down. “I liked you better with both your eyes.” 

They seized each other and hugged, hoping to never let go.

It happened on what should have been an ordinary morning during their trip to Dressrosa. Kin’emon and Mononosuke were having what they called a “Private Father-Son Meeting” in the aquarium room, so everyone else was banned from it for the time being. Zoro and Sanji were sparring on the deck, testing their skills and banter honed after two years, and Luffy was hanging out next to Law on a railing. Nami was drawing maps in her room, Usopp was in his workshop, and Robin and Franky were at the bow, keeping an eye on the ship’s course. Chopper and Brook were cheering on Zoro and Sanji, alternating the names every so often, to their annoyance. 

Luffy leaned over to Law and whispered something, holding up something in his hand. Law took it, nodded, and raised his hand. In an instant, Zoro and Sanji fell over, caught off-balance. 

“What did you do?” Chopper exclaimed as they sat up, shaking their heads. 

“Oh me, oh my, we’re stuck in this situation again,” Brook remarked. “Why did you do that, Law-san?” 

“I got paid,” Law said, flashing the coin at him. 

Two yells echoed across the deck. Used to this, no one was drawn out from inside the ship, and Robin and Franky stayed at the bow with barely a glance behind them. 

“Why is it so bright?!” Zoro in Sanji’s body yelled, covering his eyes. “Do you guys see this all the time?!” 

“Law, swap us back right now,” Sanji in Zoro’s body snapped. “I think I gave this idiot a concussion. I can’t see any color.” 

“Of course you can’t, I’m color blind,” Zoro said. He rubbed his eyes, staring at Sanji in his body. “Is that what I look like?” 

“Wait, what?” Luffy said, coming over with Chopper and Brook. Law hung back, folding his arms and leaning against the railing

“Is that what I look like?” Zoro repeated. “What color is my hair?” 

“Green,” Sanji said. 

“Wait, that’s besides the point!” Chopper exclaimed. “You’re color blind?!” 

“Yeah,” Zoro said. “Did it never come up?” 

“No!” Sanji exclaimed. “No, it didn’t!” 

“What’s the big deal? I’ve never needed to see color to get by.” Zoro stared at his hands and stood, looking around and taking in the colors of his crewmates. “Someone get me a mirror. I wanna see the cook.” 

Brook dug around in his pockets while Luffy laughed. “No wonder you never got why Sanji calls you moss-hair!” 

“Why?” Zoro said. 

“Your hair’s the same color as moss!” 

Zoro gave Sanji a look as Brook passed him a small handheld mirror. As he studied himself (or rather, Sanji) in the mirror, Sanji stood and stared at him, blinking. 

“Zoro,” he said. “Pass me that mirror when you’re done.” 

“Sure. What color are your eyes?” 

“I’m going to talk to you about this later,” Chopper threatened. Luffy wandered away again to bother Law, Zoro too absorbed in the new spectrum available to him to pay much attention. 

“They’re blue,” Sanji said. “Light blue. And my hair’s yellow. Blonde.” 

“Huh.” Zoro twisted the mirror this way and that. “It’s pretty.” 

“Give it!” 

Zoro handed him the mirror, and Sanji stood next to him, staring at his (Zoro’s) one eye and his (Sanji’s) one visible one. 

“Oh,” he said. “Oh, Zoro.” 

He passed the mirror back to Brook and pulled Zoro by the hand up to the stern to have more privacy. As soon as they were alone, he looked at Zoro, opened his mouth, and started laughing. 

“What?” Zoro said, annoyed. 

“Zoro,” Sanji said, his eye starting to tear up. “I thought this whole time you were just obtuse, or plain rude. But you literally didn’t see it.” 

“What are you talking about?” 

“Your eyes---rather, eye, is silver. Grey,” Sanji said, pointing. 

“Huh,” Zoro said, staring his body in the eye. “Looks the same as before.” 

“Exactly.” Sanji wiped at the tears threatening to spill down his cheek. “Zoro, I used to have one blue eye and one silver eye. Before we met, you had one silver eye, and one blue eye.” 

“Before we met?” 

“Zoro.” Sanji took his hands, grinning. “We’re soulmates. You didn’t notice because my eye color looks the same as yours in monochrome.” 

“I . . . what?” 

“I was so angry. Not just because I wanted my soulmate to be a girl---I thought you were pretending to not notice, or you were really that stupid. But you just didn’t see.” 

“Oh.” Reeling, Zoro stared at Sanji, staring at that one grey eye. “Oh. That. Does that matter?” 

“You had no idea we were soulmates. You didn’t see it, and also, you’re an idiot.” Sanji leaned into Zoro’s shoulder, wrapping his arms around him. “I knew, and I tried to hate you, but I couldn’t. I think I would’ve fallen for you even if I was color blind, or just blind. It doesn’t matter.” 

“Right.” Zoro hugged Sanji back, and they stood in silence for a minute. Then--- 

“Let’s get that dick to change us back,” Sanji said, pulling away. He grinned, the wide smile odd on Zoro’s face. “It’s weird hugging myself. Are you going to miss colors?”

“Nah. It’s too bright.” Zoro held his hand. “And I’ve never needed color anyway.”

could i maybe request some general sleep over headcanons with the strawhats ?

(It's FLUFF time!)

Chopper makes a bunch of different face masks based on everyone's skin (and in his case, fur) type. For Brook, he uses some mineral oil for his bones and some argan oil for his hair. Robin applies it to everyone with her DF and Sanji slices some cucumbers to put over everyone's eyes.

Brook puts on some chill tunes on his Music Dial and everyone relaxes before washing off the masks. 

Sanji cooks a big potluck style dinner, and for dessert he makes gourmet s'mores! Each Straw Hat has their preferred marshmallow texture: Robin, Chopper, and Usopp like theirs golden brown, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami like it more burnt, and Franky is a freak who wants it set on fire so it can turn almost BLACK. Brook doesn't like marshmallows much because they get stuck in his teeth, so he just munches on the chocolate and graham cracker like a sandwich. 

Sanji also makes something like hot chocolate or apple cider on cold nights, and everyone looks out at the stars on the deck of the Thousand Sunny. Usopp tells scary stories, and Robin talks about old legends she's discovered in her archaeological research.

Nami likes playing card games because she fucking cheats and wins the majority of them. She's ruthless...but not when it comes to Chopper; she goes easy on him and offers to teach him how to cheat too! His poker face is awful though, so it doesn't help much.

Franky and Usopp are amazing at charades and impressions, and all of the Straw Hats have laughed so hard at them that they could barely breathe. The first time Robin genuinely laughed on the crew after Enies Lobby was when Usopp did an impression of Enel by tying some strings near his ears. 

On sleepover nights where the outside weather is nice, the whole crew makes a giant pallet from their blankets (seriously, it encompasses like...half of the deck) and makes a giant cuddle puddle. Sanji is required to sleep on the opposite side of the ladies, for...reasons. The usual cuddle puddle order is:

Brook on the end, since he doesn't have to sleep and will just lay flat like a damn corpse to stare at the sky. His elbows are also kinda pointy.

Luffy, because he's rubbery and soft enough so sleeping next to Brook doesn't bother him as much. 

Usopp, Sanji, and Zoro always wind up next to each other no matter where they start out. 

Chopper is on Zoro's chest, and Nami is usually on the other side. Chopper tends to get passed around and cuddled by the crew as they flop around in their sleep though, so he never knows where he's going to wake up.

Robin actually sleeps on top of Franky, because he doesn't want to accidentally crush or squish her with his giant body. He puts a few pillows or blankets on him and he makes a surprisingly comfortable bed. (Sorry, my inner Frobin shipper is showing lol)

™️ - How has One Piece changed you?

I'm not even sure how to put it into words. It's just always been there for me ever since I was little. It made me find so many friends and meet so many awesome people. It's my home, my safe haven, the place I can always return to. It got me out of one of my darkest places last year (when I finally found back to it after having strayed from it for a few years). It's my anchor, and a way to connect with other people. Most of all, it's the most amazing story I have ever experienced, and has given me so many role models and things & words to live by.

“Found one! I found a coconut!” Chopper chirped towards his friends. 
Without missing a beat Usopp stood up from his place where he had tinkered on his weapon and came to the Doctors side, looking out for the fruit bopping on the waves in the distance.
”Let me see,” it took the sharpshooter a moment to spy it, so he was impressed that Chopper had found it at all, “How did you find it?!” 
Brook and Franky joined them too, both of them also searching for the fruit at the Horizon. 
“It’s a nice distance.” Brook already prepared himself for being a judge once more. 
And since it was approved by the musician, both Franky and Usopp smirked at each other before reading their weapons. 
“All right!” 
Franky choose his weapon left. Four barrels, shooting row after row of bullets. It actually was his only hope to try to hit the aim before Usopp even started but of course it took the Sharpshooter only one try and the coconut was dust. 
“Usopp-san won!” Brooks melodic voice announced. 
“Yes!” The sharpshooter was excited, like it wasn’t normal for him to win. Usopp was just the best at this, Franky knew that. It still hurt to lose. 
“Damn! I won’t lose the next one!” 
“Okay!” Usopp was smiling at the tall man with his shit-eating grin.

Robin didn’t even look up from her book when she angrily flipped the coin to Nami, who cooly caught it and and answered with a smug “Thanks!” 
“Franky! You’ve already lost three in a row!” Really, Robin should know better than to bet against the sniper king but she really wanted to believe in Franky. Still, this was frustrating.

“Shut up!” as soon as he said it he regretted that he had snapped at Robin. It was just so frustrating but that wasn’t her fault. If anything he should be moved that she betted against Usopp. Even though that was quite a stupid move. On the other side he was still trying to win.

Maybe they were both stupid in their pride. 
Because there was no way to deny it. Their sharpshooter was just the best at his job. Maybe Franky could design better Weapons but Usopp would be always be better at using them. 
But the younger man was also real bro because he also shouted towards the girls: “Why are you two even betting without asking?” 
Before they could continue their banter Chopper quipped up again. 
“Oh, an empty bottle this time!” 
“Great! I’ll get it again!” of course Usopp would, there was no way it would be different this time, still… 
“That is my line! Where is it?” Franky stared out towards the ocean.

“Up for another round, Robin?” Nami smirked. Of course Robin would jump to defend her mans honor. It was easy money. 
The archeologist grumbled but alas: “He’ll win this time. His whole body is a weapon after all.”

is it disheartening/disappointing for you, as a fan, to see year after year, frobin mrobin fcorrin all in the high spots of the top 20 of cyl but for some reason mcorrin can just never get a break and make the cut? why do you think this is?

No, not at all tbh. I think what’s good about being a mcorrin stan is that I have 0 expectation on what he gets from the fandom 🤣 

On the other hand, I always feel pleasantly surprised when there’s anything good happening around him,  regardless of how trivial they may seem (like winning a round in VG while being an underdog, appearing in a FEH comic, seeing a fully built +10 enemy mcorrin in the arena, getting a new cipher card, etc.)

I was quite surprised seeing frobin ranking that high though, it’d be interesting to see who wins OvO
