#friederburda #friederburdamuseum #friederburdacollection #badenbaden #visitbadenbaden #alemanha #germany #deutschland #visitgermany #germanytourism #art #instaart #luxurytravel #contemporaryart #architecture #richardmeier (at Museum Frieder Burda)

Here we have another detail of 'Baden-Baden Satellite Reef,' reproduced from 'Christine and Margaret Wertheim: Value and Transformation of Corals,' published by @wienand_verlagâ "We have built a world of rectilinearity," @margaretwertheim44 writes. "The rooms we inhabit, the skyscrapers we work in and the grid-like arrangement of our streets speak to us in straight lines. Yet outside our boxes the natural world teems with swooping, curling and crenellated forms, from the fluted surfaces of lettuce leaves and fungi to the frilled skirts of nudibranchs and the animal undulations of sea slugs. We have learned to play by Euclidean rules because 2000 years of geometrical training have engraved the grid in our minds. But in the early 19th century, mathematicians became aware of a space in which lines cavorted in aberrant formations, suggesting the existence of a new geometry. To all at the time hyperbolic space seemed pathological for it contravened the dictates of Euclid, overthrowing millennia of mathematical wisdom and offending common sense.⊠While pure hyperbolic surfaces belong to a different branch of geometry than fractals, the 'iterative' nature of craft practices enables us to translate the mathematical ideal of a hyperbolic form into the physical reality of a material object. In effect, the stringy nature of yarn forms a bridge between the discrete and continuous realms conjoining thousands of individual stitches into a sheet-like continuum. From the point of view of 'pure mathematics' this is an illegitimate move, which is perhaps one reason why it took an outsiderâand a womanâto realize how this could be done. And so, I ask again: what does it mean to know hyperbolic geometry? In crafting these surfaces, women crocheting hyperbolic corals are actively exploring non-Euclidean space; and the 'Crochet Coral Reef' project, which is an exercise in the possibilities of such forms, is a collective global experiment in applied mathematics." Behold, a detail of 'Helsinki Coral Forest' crocheted from recycled plastics by 3000 Helsinki Satellite reefers. (Sculpture curated by Christine and Margaret Wertheim with Lotta Kjellberg, Elina Ahlstedt, Noora El Harouny and Tuija Maija Piironen.)â â This radical work of crocheting is reproduced from 'Christine and Margaret Wertheim: Value and Transformation of Corals,' published by @wienand_verlagâ â Christine Wertheim writes: "In 2006, when Margaret Wertheim and I learned of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), that whorl of plastic waste accumulating in the Pacific Ocean, we vowed to save all our own domestic plastic for 5 years. 4 years later we had to admit defeat; for to save is to wash, and washing plastic, especially food-related stuff is a time-consuming business. By then we had accumulated 440 pounds. We call it 'The Midden,' after the trash heaps found around ancient sites of human habitation that often provide anthropological insight. For two people over four years, 440 pounds is not so bad. We could not do it now, as the quantum of plastic packaging ever increases. For instance, our favorite containers of pickled ginger recently sprouted yet another skin of 'protection' in the form of an internal hard-plastic lid, inside the outer lid, which is itself now wrapped in a layer of clear soft plastic. How many condoms do we need to protect ourselves? And from what? And as we accumulated this stuff, we also began to crochet it: the plastic bags, videotapes, gift wrap, etc., anything that could be turned into a plastic yarn. And from these we started making a 'Toxic Reef' as a postmodern synthetic sibling to the mimetic beauty of our yarn-based works, themselves evoking healthy living reefs.âŠ"â â Catalog edited by Udo Kittelmann, Christine Wertheim, Margaret Wertheim. It's impossible not to love this detail of the crocheted 'Baden-Baden Satellite Reef' from 'Christine and Margaret Wertheim: Value and Transformation of Corals,' the new release this week from @wienand_verlagâ â The collaborative aspect of the Wertheims' 'Crocheted Coral Reef' project is "manifest in the creation of 'Satellite Reefs,' site-specific community works where people from a given region crochet and assemble their own reefs, and exhibit these alongside the Wertheimsâ installations,' Udo Kittelmann writes. "At @friederburda the 'Baden-Baden Satellite Reef' is the latest of these people-powered simulations. We are delighted that so many participants took part in the open call 'Crochet for the Oceans' that the museum announced on its website in spring of 2021. Comprising more than 40,000 individual crochet coral piecesâby far the most of any 'Satellite Reef' endeavorâcreated by over 4000 contributors across Germany and neighboring countries, the woolly archipelago of Baden-Baden subreefs is truly the Great Barrier Reef of crochet coral seascapes. â â In November Christine traveled to the museum to work with a team of local women to curate all the coral pieces on six large-scale islandsâeach one a purpose-built, three-dimensional topography designed by Christine and built by the Museum Frieder Burdaâs superb construction team, thereby transforming thousands of individuals pieces into an aesthetic whole, a vibrant entangling of art, craft, mathematics and community labor. Working together in a tactile way and simultaneously raising awareness of the impact of global warming on coral reefs and ocean degradation, this installation plays a vital role in the overall exhibition."â â Read more via linkinbio.â â Catalog edited by Udo Kittelmann, Christine Wertheim, Margaret Wertheim. We have to admit we're excited about this! So even though the catalog releases in September, we're letting you know that 'Christine and Margaret Wertheim: Value and Transformation of Corals' is coming soon from @wienand_verlagâ â Reviewing the show @friederburda for @artnet Amah-Rose Abrams writes, "An extraordinary crochet project by two sisters ⊠brings together art, science and knitting to highlight the ecological threats coral reefs around the world face amid climate change.â â Margaret and Christine Wertheim, whose project weaves together mathematics, critical theory, and feminism has been exhibited all over the world, including at the 2019 Venice Biennale. But thatâs only one part of the project. Since 2019, the sisters have also provided volunteers around the world (including in New York, London, Melbourne) with everything they need to contribute their own crochet projects."â â Read more via linkinbio.â â @margaretwertheim44 #christinewertheim #margaretwertheim #CrochetCoralReef #coralreef #crochet https://www.instagram.com/p/CdlukDAJhew/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
