THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT HUBERT Feast Day: November 3
Hubert was noble-born circa 656 AD into French nobility, probably in the European city of Toulouse. He was the eldest son of Bertrand, the Duke of Aquintaine, and, thus, heir to the Duchy and all of the appurtenant wealth and hereditaments. Hubert was also the grandson of Charibert, the King of Toulouse, and a descendant of the legendary Pharamond, the King of Francs.
As legend has it, Hubertus was raised among the splendors of court life and was afforded the finer things in life, including the best education, military training, and ample time for leisure. He had vast wealth, influence and importance, and was described as intelligent, physically handsome, energetic and personable.
At an early age, Hubert was drawn to one of the pleasurable activities of young nobles, the hunt, called la chasse. In fact, the hunt of animals was the primary activity in which he spent his days. His love for the chase was such that he gradually stopped practicing any religious affiliation, instead spending his days in the fields and woods, trapping and hunting.
It is said that Hubert was a renowned bowman, often exhibiting his marksmanship in competitions. He devoted most of his time, even on holy days, to the hunt, a sacrilege in the God-centered times of the Middle Ages.
According to legend, at the Court of Theuduric in Metz Hubert met Floribanne, daughter of a noble, who, while a pious and devoted Christian, liked to ride and frequently accompanied Hubert on his hunts. In 682, they married to great court pomp and ceremony. A son, Floribert, was born to them. Shortly after giving birth, however, Floribanne became ill and she died at the beginning of Holy Week in 684.
As the legend continues, on that Good Friday morning, when the faithful were crowding the churches, Hubert went out to hunt. As he was pursuing a magnificent stag, the animal turned and Hubert was astounded to see a vision of a crucifix standing between its antlers.
He heard a voice from Heaven saying: "Hubert, unless you turn to the Lord, and lead a holy life, you shall quickly go down into Hell."
Hubert dismounted and fell to his knees saying: "Lord, what wilt Thou have me do?"
The Heavenly Voice replied: "Go and seek Bishop Lambert, and he will instruct you."
After his vision, Hubert renounced all of his royal titles and hereditaments. This included the right to succeed his father as Duke of Aquitane, which he conferred upon his younger brother, Eudon, in whose care he also placed his infant son, He gave his considerable wealth and possessions to the poor, and set out immediately for Maastricht where Bishop Lambert received Hubert kindly, and became his spiritual advisor.
Lambert directed Hubert to go and live among the people and creatures of the nearby forest of the Ardennes, and to devote himself to prayer and study. Hubert did so, and studied for the priesthood, into which he was soon ordained, and shortly afterwards became one of Bishop Lambert’s chief associates in the administration of his diocese. Hubert made a pilgrimage to Rome in 708, during which Bishop Lambert was assassinated. Pope Sergius I consecrated Hubert as 31st Bishop of Maastricht. He later became first Bishop of Liege, and was widely known as the Apostle of the Ardennes.
Bishop Hubert was diligent in fasting and prayer, and became famous for his eloquence in the pulpit. He remained steadfast in his concern for the needs of the people and creatures of the forest and set out to convert the pagans and bandits of the Ardennes Forest. It is said that he made many forays into the forest for that purpose, and used his considerable archery skills to gain their respect and trust, at which time they became more receptive to the Gospel. Hubert was ultimately able to convert many of these people to Christianity. He became an advocate for the people of the forest and his wise judgment and intercession was frequently sought in many matters, including those involving the forest, wildlife, and hunting.
Bishop Hubertus had unusual healing powers which he used to relieve people of various afflictions, and these miraculous acts became widely known. The faithful began making pilgrimages to Hubertus’ Cathedral in Liege to seek his help, and many miraculous acts by Hubertus were chronicled.
On May 30th, 727, Hubert died peacefully at the age of 71 in Fura, now Tervueren, located 30 miles from Liège. He was buried in the college church of St. Peter, Liège. In 825, Bishop Hubert’s remains were exhumed and transferred to the Benedictine Abbey of Amdain, the present day Saint Hubertus, Belgium.

The Treaty of Reviel, Kevin and Hwall’s Story.
an: excited for people to read this. don’t worry kevin and hwall will have their own stories but I put their article/blurb together because it fit. since the stories are going to overlap, i’m going to post about the reader from each story line and what they would be known as from the other readers perspective (if that makes sense). But for now all you need to know is that Duchess Vivianne Lajorie of Belnau is Jacob’s reader.
EXCITING! First Event of the Courting Season. What happened in the Allemond Mansion?
(Updated 8:15 am, by Triston Benett)
(Cardien,Criston) - This past Wednesday was the first of many social gatherings of the courting season. An exciting time for those of royal and noble blood among the kingdoms bound by treaty. Even more exciting when you take into consideration that this is the first courting season that will involve royalty and nobility hailing from the island Kingdom Of Kridora. The Prince of Kridora, Ju Hakyeon, was spotted arriving by boat on the shores of Criston just this last Friday. It will be very exciting to see him and other Kridorians mingling with the most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes that Criston has to offer.
We live in a fascinating time, where tradition is still upheld but always becomes more modern with the times so that it may sustain itself, and the idea of courting is not exempt from that. Duke Enzo Allemond of Antives, threw the first party of the summer, officially starting the courting season. Taking place at the Allemond Mansion, the guest list was quite exclusive and highbrow. Of course, the Lady Annie Thomas, who it is rumored has stolen the young duke's heart, was in attendance. Sir Pierre Lambert and his boyfriend, Jordan Boudet, were also seen entering the estate. Even though courting season is, in its originality, primarily for singles, it’s still very nice to see those who are young and in love enjoying their youth. That being said we also saw the likes of Earl Robert Baume attended with his wife, Countess Lina, attending the party to escort his younger sister Lady Clara Baume, this being her very first courting season. I wonder who’s eyes she caught during the night of dancing and merrymaking at the mansion.
Of course, we couldn’t forget to snap some pictures of the arrival of the Royal Family. Prince Kevin was the first to arrive from the family, looking dashing in a designer suit. He arrived alongside his close friends, the Royal twins visiting from Praedor, Prince Chanhee and Prince Changmin, who looked equally as handsome and draped in lavish clothing and jewelry. We expect nothing less of those who hail from the kingdom known for its immense wealth. Insiders from the party told us that Prince Chanhee was seen talking to a couple of different young ladies during the night. Not shocking in the least bit as we all know how sociable he can be. While his twin, Prince Changmin, stayed on the dance floor most of the night. Prince Kevin’s night was quite eventful, according to our source, after arriving the Prince had a run in with Lady Y/N Besnard of Martilles, who had just made the long journey from her home to the capital for the season. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like the two had a pleasant talk. Allegedly, the two of them got into a little bit of a spat. Not much was heard but the two kept away from each other for the rest of the night. Prince Kevin was said to be on the sidelines after that, mingling with some people even having a dance on Prince Changmin’s request but had opted to stay to himself most of the night.
We requested a statement on the matter from the Hazelstone Castle but have not gotten a response. However, when we prompted the Besnard Home, we received a statement by email. The Marquis of Martilles clarified that lady Y/N bears no ill will against the Prince and that the two have a working relationship that was formed two years ago during Prince Kevin’s charity outreach program in Martilles that the two of them worked together on, and is built on great understanding one another. Their interaction with each other could be easily misunderstood by outsiders if they didn’t know how the two of them work together.
Soon after, Crown Prince Jacob made his arrival with friends in tow, most notably Lord David Lavett, Lady Sara Rodin and Duchess Vivianne Lajorie of Belnau. This is just the beginning of the season and things could change but for the third year in a row, The Crown Prince and the Duchess have attended courting events together. There are rumors flying that the two are secretly together but we have always been told otherwise from royal statements on the two and even from themselves. They state that they are just very good friends that have been since the pair were just young children. We won’t push it but we, along with the rest of Criston, can’t help but want to see the two of them end up together.
There were other people who attended but those were the only ones, we had the opportunity to see enter the party. Surprisingly, Prince Hwall was nowhere to be seen. We had assumed that he was already at the mansion, seeing that he was very close friends with Duke Enzo. But when we checked, no one saw him enter the home at all that day. We couldn’t get a statement from his brother but we did get a statement from the Duke, “... Yeah, he was supposed to show up. I was texting him earlier in the day and he said he was going to come but he never showed up.” Very unlike Prince Hwall who seems to love mingling and partying more than anyone else in the royal family. Did Prince Hwall really ditch the gathering and leave his friends waiting for him? Hopefully, he’ll be at the next event and we can get an answer from him.
Are you excited for the next grand courting event? It’s said to be a dinner hosted by Countess Sonia and her family next Friday. It’s going to be a very fancy event so expect the men in their finery and the ladies in their lavish gowns. And most importantly, we’ve been invited by the hosting family, so expect our extensive coverage of the entire event!
It has been revealed early this morning that the youngest son of Prince Taejoon, Prince Hwall, has gone missing.
Early this morning at 7:53 am, The Royal Correspondence of Criston released this statement,
“Greeting to the citizens and residents of Criston.
It is on this early Wednesday morning we regrettably bring you the unfortunate news that Prince Hwall has gone missing. At 7:00 am this morning at the Hazelstone Castle, his manservants went to awaken the prince to start his day. He was scheduled to appear at the grand reveal of the memorial statue for his uncle, the late Prince TaekJo, along with the rest of the royal family, when they found his bed empty. The room was in disarray and a number of royal garments and jewelry were missing along with the prince. The royal guard along with law enforcement are looking into the matter and are investigating all viable options in order to find the prince and return him home safely.
The royal family is distraught and doing the best to take in the situation at hand. They will be the first notified if any new information on the Prince’s whereabouts comes from the investigation. This however, is not going to stop their royal duties. Pertaining to the statue reveal today, The King and Queen will be in attendance. Along with Crown Prince Jacob, his mother Princess Yesol, Prince Taejoon, and Prince Kevin. Princess Seongwon will not be attending due to her son’s disappearance.
We ask that you look kindly upon the Royal Family on this the sorrowful anniversary of Prince TaekJo’s passing, grant them grace and mercy.
Forever will Criston Reign, The Royal Correspondence.”
This shocking and saddening that this happened on a day already filled with mourning. We pray for the royal family and for Prince Hwall, may he return to Criston in full health.
(Tristian Benett for The Criston Creative)

Shutterstock/Getty//E! Illustration
Labor Day weekend is in the end upon us.
And whilst that implies summer season is in reality, formally coming to an in depth (even though, if somebody may just let the temps in Los Angeles know that, we would truly respect it), it additionally approach that we’ve got one final three-day weekend to ship the season out in taste. Whether you might be making plans to rejoice with a pool party, a BBQ, a seaside day, or, relating to our buddies at the southern East Coast, simply seeking to keep protected as Hurricane Dorian makes landfall, you’ll want an up to date playlist to get you via. And that is the place we are available in.
Welcome to week 3 of The MixtapE!
Every Friday, all our favourite artists ship their newest choices unexpectedly, making for reasonably a humiliation of riches for track enthusiasts. But who has the time to offer all of it a pay attention and separate the wheat from the chaff? We do, after all. What follows are our alternatives for this week’s easiest of the most efficient. You can thank us later.
(And in case you are searching for much more new track inspo, take a look at our alternatives from week one and week two!)
Lana Del Rey — “Norman f–king Rockwell”
Lana Del Rey’s 6th studio album, the delightfully named Norman F–king Rockwell, is in the end out, following a gradual unlock of promotional tracks that experience stored us in a dreamy way of thinking all summer season lengthy. (Seriously, her quilt of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” is the sort of present.) And the stay up for the name monitor has been smartly well worth the wait. In the pretty piano ballad, produced through Lana and Jack Antonoff, the airy songstress sings a few “goddamn man-child” who makes her blue and talks “to the walls when the party gets bored of you.” The whole album would serve you smartly in case you sought after to simply bliss out someplace within the sand because the solar units, however this monitor specifically encapsulates all of what makes Lana Lana: her melodrama, her wit, her haunting vocals. It’s all there in a single absolute best, four-minute bundle.
Post Malone — “Circles”
We’re every week clear of the discharge of Posty’s 3rd studio album, Hollywood’s Bleeding, and he is delivered the second one style of what to anticipate from the LP within the type of this hazy little quantity that is absolute best for those canine days of summer season. Written along common collaborators Frank Dukes and Louis Bell, the monitor unearths Posty doing his easiest Tame Impala influence whilst making a song a few dating that is going nowhere excellent. “Seasons change, and our love went cold,” the refrain starts. “Feed the flame ’cause we can’t let it go. Run away, but we’re running in circles.” The downbeat manufacturing is a welcome exchange of tempo from his standard sound—”Wow” this isn’t—that simply would possibly trap those that’d prior to now written Posty off. At least it did for this author.
Miranda Lambert with Maren Morris — “Way Too Pretty for Prison”
We’re nonetheless a couple of months clear of the discharge of Miranda’s 7th studio album, Wildcard, due on November 1, however the nation track spitfire has given us any other style of what is in retailer, teaming together with her Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour opener Maren for the cheeky “Way Too Pretty For Prison.” As it’s possible you’ll surmise from the name, the monitor unearths the 2 making a song assuring a chum that they would do anything else to assist get revenge on a dishonest POS—anything else, this is, apart from for a murderous act that’ll ship them upstate. It’s a humorous little honky-tonk that’ll cheer you up in case you’ve been wronged and fantasizing about getting some revenge of your individual.
Charli XCX feat. HAIM — “Warm”
At first blush, Charli’s future-forward pop and the Haim sisters’ sun-soaked ’70s and ’80s impressed pop rock appear as even though they’re going to make for unusual bedfellows. But on “Warm,” the newest monitor to be launched from the previous’s drawing close self-titled album, due September 13—the sisters’ vocals really feel proper at house on Charli’s fluttery electronica as they take turns pleading with a different somebody to offer them the explanation why they are able to’t make it paintings. “Fall in love. Risk it all,” Charli begs because the tune builds to its climax. Consider us smitten.
Tones and I — ” The Kids Are Coming”
Australian singer Tones and I (born Toni Watson) has been making waves this summer season together with her wreck hit “Dance Monkey” and its viral sensation of a track video—significantly, if you have not heard it but, forestall the whole thing and repair your lifestyles—and now she makes excellent on that monitor’s promise with the discharge of her debut EP, The Kids Are Coming. It’s all price a pay attention, however the name monitor is an rapid standout. Over a somewhat menacing manufacturing, Tones warns the older technology that the early life are, if truth be told, coming to wash up all their messes. “No one seems to understand the kids these days/And why we live this way/We’ve got to clean up the mess you’ve made/Still you don’t wanna change,” she sings. “You create the law but can’t control our thoughts/And no, we won’t be bought/We don’t just protest for the fun/We’re hear to get it done.” Consider your self warned.
Wale — “BGM”
There’s so much to like about this new monitor from Wale: it is funky AF, it is a important ode to Black Girl Magic, it is a potent reminder that we will have to forestall drowsing at the rapper. But maximum of all, we are 100 % right here for this killer line: “So let’s go/It’s your birthday/Got that ice cream/It’s sherbet day.” Gold, we let you know. Gold.
Tove Lo and Jax Jones — “Jacques”
We’re a few month clear of the discharge of Sunshine Kitty, the highly-anticipated fourth studio album from our favourite sexually-liberated Swedish pop big name, Tove Lo. To get us hyped for the brand new choice of tracks, she’s already dropped the killer “Glad He’s Gone” and “Bad as the Boys,” retaining us bopping all summer season lengthy. And now she’s talented us with this funky little banger, a collab with English DJ Jax Jones, that unearths her making a song a few one-night stand with a French fella. “It’s raw and cheeky, because that’s what that night was,” Tove mentioned in a press unlock saying the monitor. And she’s no longer unsuitable. “No talking now, pull on my waist,” she sings within the refrain over Jax’s funky bassline. “Cause I want you doing bad things to me.” Let this one take you directly to the dance ground.
Justine Skye — “Secrets”
If you favor your track with a Kardashian-Jenner co-sign, let us introduce Justine Skye. A chum of Kendall and Kylie Jenner the type and R&B songstress dropped a brand new EP, Bare with Me, this week, marking her debut as an unbiased artist. (She was once prior to now signed to Roc Nation.) On this standout monitor, she leans into her Caribbean roots as she shall we a lover know that he is going to be considered one of her secrets and techniques, “take it or leave it.” If you’ll spend a while round a pool this weekend, flip this one all of the approach up and luxuriate in its easy waters.
Skrillex feat. Ty Dolla $ign and Boys Noize — “Midnight Hour”
It’s been a minute since Skrillex has launched an authentic unmarried—two years, to be precise, in spite of that includes on remixes and monitor all over in the intervening time—however the manufacturer is again and in a large approach with this infectious monitor that expertly marries R&B and space. The resolution to transport again and forth from Ty’s lush vocal right into a in reality wild, throbbing dance beat would possibly spell crisis within the fingers of a lesser manufacturer, however Skrillex proves he is aware of precisely what he is doing right here. If there is any justice, this one will probably be large.
!!! — “Couldn’t Have Known”
Never heard of !!!? Don’t even know the way to pronounce it? That’s OK, you without a doubt would possibly not be the one one. But the dance-punk band, pronounced maximum often as “Chk Chk Chk” were making gloriously demented track since 2001. (Our private favorites are “S–t Scheisse, Merde,” portions one and two, off their 2004 album Louden Up Now.) They’ve simply launched their 8th studio album, Wallop, and agree with us once we say it greater than lives as much as the name. Previously launched unmarried “This Is The Door” is likely one of the easiest disco tracks we have now heard in a very long time, with a construct to nowhere that is in reality electrical, however it is new monitor “Couldn’t have Known”that is were given us humming this week. It’s onerous to even categorize the sounds with the exception of supremely funky. When the refrain opens up, you can know simply what we imply.
Astrid S — “Doing To Me”
We’ve been feeling this Norwegian singer ever since she dropped her 2017 EP Party’s Over. (“Breathe” is a should pay attention.) And whilst the stay up for a debut full-length album persists, she returns nowadays with but any other EP, entitled Trust Issues. Each of the 5 tracks are price your time, however the standout for us is “Doing To Me,” a candy little slice of Scandanavian pop that unearths the songstress lamenting the best way a lover assists in keeping toying together with her feelings. The twist? “Baby, I love what you’re doing to me,” she admits within the refrain.
Bonus Tracks:
Bebe Rexha — “Not 20 Anymore”: As promised, Bebe took the ageist remarks she’s been listening to and became them into an anthem tailored for making a song defiantly on the best of your lungs.
Kris Kross Amsterdam and Conor Maynard feat. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie — “Ooh Girl”: The Dutch DJ trio and British crooner group up for his or her 3rd collab but, this time joined through the American rapper, for a tropical monitor with a killer pattern that you can acknowledge straight away.
Snakehips feat. Anna of the North — “Summer Fade”: The British duo enlist the burgeoning Norwegian singer for this slinky little quantity concerning the season slipping clear of us.
mxmtoon — “dream of you”: YouTube made this lo-fi singer a celebrity, serving to her debut EP go 100 million streams on Spotify. But it is songs like this one, off her upcoming debut album, the masquerade, that’ll stay her within the sport. It’s all simply so dreamy, no pun supposed.
Happy listening!

The following short articles appeared in Mimi’s Magazine October and November issues. Minkins Music is completing it’s twelfth year of liner notes in multiple publications and on-line media outlets.
“Is there anybody out there? One-two-three on the satellite radio?” One of the best programs out there is the Hardcore Troubadour Radio show hosted by Steve Earle on SXM channel 60. With the Rock and Roll HOF nominations being announced this month, a case for Steve Earle’s induction is long overdue.
Since the release of Guitar Town in 1986 through So You Wannabe An Outlaw in 2017, Earle’s music has been relevant, chock full of hits, and at times political. Emulating the songwriting of Bruce Springsteen, Guy Clark, and Townes Van Zandt, songs like “Hillbilly Highway”, “Guitar Town”, “Copperhead Road”, “Telephone Road”, and “Galway Girl” have been etched into jukeboxes and covered by other artists and garage bands. Some albums like The Mountain (1999) with Earle backed by The Del McCoury Band dedicated to Bluegrass founder Bill Monroe along with tribute albums Townes (2009) and Guy (2019) are essential recordings within his catalog. He is an exceptional instrumentalist on guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and banjo besides lending his iconic voice to recordings.
His rebellious story can be found in books like Hardcore Troubadour: The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle by Lauren St. John (2003), a great read that you can find for a deuce and change. The man is constantly touring, frequently playing in either Cleveland or Kent and performing acoustic or electric backed by The Dukes.
My sincere appreciation of Steve Earle has recently been while “taking his class” listening to the weekly radio show. Earle dons the professor hat while delving into the historical periods of a certain year and the music that defines it. Other shows have been solemn eulogies dedicated to departed artists who left their mark on the music timeline.
So turn it on, turn it up, listen to the radio and listen to Steve Earle.
With the holidays and RSD Black Friday just weeks away, it’s time to offer some suggestions for that audiophile on your gift list. Here are a few favorites released this past year from artists that deserve your listening attention.
The best album of the year could also be the comeback album of the year as Tanya Tucker delivered the goods with While I’m Livin’. Produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings, it’s Tucker’s first album since 2009 with radio singles “The Wheels of Laredo”, “Hard Luck”, “High Ridin’ Heroes”, “Bring My Flowers Now”, and a cover of Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me”. Other notable female singer/songwriter releases include Bonnie Bishop The Walk, Julia Jacklin – Crushing, Danni Nicholls – The Melted Morning, and Kelsey Waldon – White Noise / White Lines. You may not know these names, but once you hear their voices you’ll fall in love with them.
As for the gentlemen, Tyler Childers anticipated follow-up to Purgatory (2017) debuted at No. 1 with Country Squire topping both Billboard’s Country Albums and American/Folk Albums upon release. Produced by Sturgill Simpson, Childers brings the “hillbilly” back to country western music and is blazing on the single “House Fire”. An artist that released his sixty-ninth studio album, Willie Nelson continues to record stellar material with Ride Me Back Home. Another Texan, Joe Buchanan released Back from Babylon that not only is a great sounding record but has some beautiful spiritual undertones.
I loved the documentary film and soundtrack Echo in the Canyon featuring music that came out of L.A.’s Laurel Canyon neighborhood between 1965-67. Starring Jakob Dylan, beautiful covers like “Go Where You Wanna Go”, “The Bells of Rhymney”, “In My Room”, “Goin’ Back”, and “Never My Love” take me back in time. When it comes to historical content, the release Bob Dylan (featuring Johnny Cash) – Travelin’ Thru, 1967 – 1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 is an essential addition to your music library. The latest chapter in bootleg series revisits Dylan’s pivotal musical journeys to Nashville, from 1967 to 1969, focusing on previously unavailable priceless recordings made with Johnny Cash and unreleased tracks from the John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, and Self Portrait sessions.
Stay tuned for some final comments next month.

Friday kicks off Thunder
Ell summed up the spirit of Friday at the festival in a sentence. Ell, dressed in sunglasses, tights and shoes, sporting a guitar with “Moody” tattooed on the strap, looked cool, but on a Friday filled with voices, she was the legend among them quartet of headliners, including her, Patrick and Lambert.
That would be Tucker, dressed black and sparkly, with a mane of hair, a catalogue of hits that stretches back to 1972, and a voice that lent a layer of hurt to her songs. Her voice might have been the benefit of Friday landing on the day of summer.
She came to terms with it, however. To these ears, however, Tucker sounded superb, whether on ballads like “It’s a little too late” or “Love me like you used to.”
She was playful and personal with the crowd, too. She sang one as a tribute to her parents, who celebrated their anniversary.
That is, until her finale, Delta Dawn--her hit, in 1972, when she was 13--which had the crowd of 16,000 singing back to her, in a movement of the Friday in Thunder’s history. Lambert is not short on the badness herself.
Lambert, dressed in Dukes and boots, ripped right into a version of Prine’s “The world goes around.” Through the tunes, Lambert gave a demonstration of why she is a mega-star.
Whether on tunes like “It all comes out in the wash,” where she turns a machine into a metaphor for marriage in a way, or on tunes that were country, like “Highway vagabond,” Lambert took on the role of the host of a heck of a party for 16,000 people--and she provided entertainment to boot. All you need to know about Ell’s concert is that after she took the stage at Thunder, the sun came out.
That was not part of the show, but it helped to frame the moment, which was one for Ell, a Calgarian who grew up jamming on guitar with her dad there that would let her play--she said she did a set standing on top of the carousel at the airport--before Bachman, no less, announced her to be a hero at 16, 10 years ago. She comes advertised as an artist--and there is a feeling to her music--but she is a bluesman.
Or maybe not so closeted--she toured with Buddy Guy at 18--and you could feel her channelling his ghosts Friday. Her playing is her strength--lots of flashbacks there--which elevated the game at Thunder.
I think Friday might have been the anniversary of Woodstock and Fonda died Friday, and I kept thinking, Ell could have been right at home at Woodstock. She has ballads, the highlight among them being the song she introduced as one she used to perform with dad at stages around Calgary when they played together--Strawberry Wine, which had the fans at Thunder singing along to.
It was a start to the lovers’ weekend, but despite the temperatures, the Friday was a smash.

The Boots and Hearts 2019 schedule and set times are here, and it’s time to start making hard decisions.
Multi-stage festivals always make it difficult to catch everyone that you see on the lineup. There are overlaps and lots of walking, and at some point you should remember to eat and go to the bathroom and maybe find some shade. B&H will be no different with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday running the Main Stage, The Front Porch Stage, as well as the SiriusXM House and the VIP Tent.
Related: Boots & Hearts 2019 Weather Forecast
To try to help you get yourself ready, we’ve got the entire list of set times and performers for all four days of the festival here. Scroll down, start by making notes in your head about who is Must See, and then you can begin to figure out where you need to be and when.
After you’ve had a look, leave a comment and tell us who is on your Must See list at the 2019 Boots and Hearts Music Festival.

The Playlist: Miranda Lambert Stomps Back, and 11 More New Songs
A pair of new songs from Miranda Lambert — her first new solo material since 2016 — show off the parts of her arsenal that have been absorbed by others and those that remain indelibly hers. Musically, “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” is genial verging on folksy. Lambert applies her curlicue twang while describing a variety of mishaps, some small and some just the other side of decent — dating a bridesmaid’s ex and bringing him to the wedding nonetheless, a dalliance with the boss. These are the small-town foibles that Kacey Musgraves has made her stock in trade. In a Nashville that has largely forsworn emotional complexity in favor of clunky earnestness, it stands out, but is not Lambert’s turf alone. “Locomotive,” however, captures something far more ineffable. Her voice is less melodic, more jagged at the rim, while the music is far rowdier, suggesting a bar band scrambling to finish up before closing time. And Lambert, unlike any of her peers, is just as elegant in this chaos — causing this chaos — as when she’s holding back. JON CARAMANICA
Sam Smith, ‘How Do You Sleep?’
In his earliest songs, Sam Smith was an oversinger, often a beautiful one. His voice was tightly controlled, full of a sinewy power, and when he allowed, lined with cracks of feeling. As he’s become more famous, though, his music has been streamlined, doing some of the heavy lifting. His new single “How Do You Sleep?” is breathable, deliberately paced, almost soothing, even if what he’s singing about is the sharp cut of betrayal. After using his voice to unleash anguish for years, Smith sounds untroubled now — maybe it’s restraint, maybe it’s fatigue. CARAMANICA
Residente, iLe and Bad Bunny, ‘Afilando Los Cuchillos’
“Afilando Los Cuchillos” — “Sharpening the Knives” — was rush-released to amplify this week’s demonstrations demanding the resignation of the governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo A. Roselló. It’s no surprise to hear political rage from Calle 13’s Residente, joined by his sister iLe singing a forthright chorus. But there’s also an equally furious rapped diatribe denouncing the governor — for incompetence, lies and corruption — from the Puerto Rican pop phenomenon Bad Bunny, who until now has presented himself as a lover, not a protester. JON PARELES
Ranky Tanky, ‘Good Time’
Hand-clapping, tambourine-shaking and call-and-response syncopations that reach back to West Africa via South Carolina’s Gullah culture drive “Good Time,” from the Charleston, S.C. band Ranky Tanky. The band aligns a jazz rhythm section with Gullah roots, and the momentum keeps building in this seven-minute track and its euphoric rent-party video — especially around the five-minute mark, when the soul shouter Quiana Parler takes over the vocals and carries the song toward primal jubilation. PARELES
Seratones, ‘Power’
A fast, urgent neo-1960s soul beat propels “Power,” a song about determination even against steep odds. “Brighter days coming but I can’t see where I’m going/In the dark morning I hit the ground running,” A.J. Haynes sings. “We take each step to lift us up higher.” Around her, minor chords and shivering, sliding strings suggest the high stakes and serious obstacles, but gospel voices join in to push ahead. PARELES
Wilco, ‘Love Is Everywhere (Beware)’
The chorus declares, “Right now, right now, love is everywhere,” but Jeff Tweedy’s hoarse whisper and the way the melody descends make clear that he’s not really so sure. There’s more self-doubt and ambivalence in the verses: “So many things I do, I can’t explain to you,” he notes. The song starts as a reassuring waltz, strummed on acoustic guitar, soon adding perpetual-motion lead-guitar triplets that are prettily ornamental, but nervous, too. “Love Is Everywhere (Beware)” is the first song from a Wilco album due in October: “Ode to Joy.” PARELES
Lafayette Gilchrist, ‘For the Go Go’
New Orleans barrelhouse piano, the Impressionism of Ravel and Duke Ellington’s jaggy solo-piano sound form the bedrock of Lafayette Gilchrist’s style at the keyboard. But if there’s one big influence on the way he thinks about rhythm, it’s the deeply swinging “pocket” of a classic go-go beat. With its classic loping groove, built on heavy hand percussion and call-and-response flow, go-go is the unofficial musical idiom of Gilchrist’s native Washington, D.C. On “Dark Matter,” his newest release, Gilchrist is alone at the acoustic piano, playing his own roiling compositions. It’s a far cry from the setup of a go-go band, but the hypnosis of the pocket comes through. GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO
Prettymuch featuring Lil Tjay, ‘Lying’
On “Lying,” Prettymuch makes sweaty pop that lands somewhere between trap and new wave. It remains the most intriguing young American boy band, facile with pinpoint harmonies and consistently rich singing. “Lying” is full of vivid details, too, from a new California king bed bought in anguish to a phone call that was never meant to connect: “If it sound like my voice is shaking/it’s cause I’m way up in the hills, my signal’s breaking.” CARAMANICA
Oumar Konate, ‘Koima Djine’
Oumar Konate, from Mali, was the lead guitarist for Khaira Arby (1959-2018), a galvanizing Malian songwriter who spearheaded a band that brought a broad streak of San Francisco psychedelia to Malian rock. It turns out that Konate can sing, too — and whoop and ululate — as he proves on “I Love You Inna,” his album released on Friday. “Koima Djine” is a plea for rain from local deities (or, per the song title, genies); it rides a tumultuous, constantly morphing six-beat Malian rhythm with raw vocal incantations and plenty of wah-wah. PARELES
avery r. young, ‘Lead in De Wattah [a Re-visit(id) Negro Spiritual] fo(r) Flint’
On “Tubman.,” his latest album, avery r. young comes on like a preacher from the Afrofuture. Moving between peroration, poetry and explosive singing — whether he’s backed by a thumping house beat or by a small choir — this Chicago-based poet and vocalist seems most focused on stirring the congregation to action. On “Lead in de Wattah,” he turns a familiar black spiritual into an airing of grievances today, condemning the powers responsible for the Flint water crisis. His voice starts quivery and delicate, reminiscent of Aaron Neville’s, but it turns gritty and growling as he leads the choir in an outraged refrain: “Charlie playing god with the water.” RUSSONELLO
Iggy Pop, ‘Free’
Iggy Pop’s “Free” is brief, atmospheric and elusive. Amid sustained electronic tones from the guitarist Noveller and ghostly overdubbed Miles Davis-tinged trumpet lines from Leron Thomas, Pop’s voice appears only a few times, intoning, “I wanna be free.” As the title song and opening track of an album due in September, it could lead anywhere. Predicting the winner of every Week 3 college football game, from Clemson-Louisville to Buffalo-Colgate
It could be a tight game in Louisville on Saturday night.
Below are picks and projections using 2017 S&P+ projections. See the bottom of the post for more detail about these.
The spread (listed in parentheses) is shown next to S&P+’s pick for each game. When S&P+ predicts a push (a tie with Vegas, basically), I’m listing the pick on the side that S&P+ would’ve picked, if teams could score in decimals.
This document breaks games (and S&P+’s season performance to date) out into their decimal glory. S&P+ is performing at an unsustainably awesome rate at the moment. Maybe this is the week regression and mean meet.
Ranked vs. ranked
Lamar Jackson
No. 3 Clemson 29 (-3), No. 14 Louisville 26 (Saturday, 8:00 PM ET, ABC)
No. 24 Florida 30 (-4.5), No. 23 Tennessee 22 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, CBS)
The Clemson-Louisville pick, broken out to one decimal: Clemson 29.0, Louisville 25.5. So the Tigers ever so slightly get the Vegas nod.
Other ranked teams in action
Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports
Vanderbilt’s Emmanuel Smith (4) and company
No spread picks for FBS vs. FCS games, which typically don’t have lines at every book.
No. 1 Alabama 43, Colorado State (+28.5) 15 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN2)
No. 2 Oklahoma 45, Tulane (+33.5) 16 (Saturday, 6:00 PM ET, PPV)

Each year at Football Study Hall, I have posted weekly S&P+ picks as a way of affirming the ratings’ validity. I use my S&P+ system as a complement to most of my analysis, and the picks are a way of showing it generally knows what it’s talking about.
S&P+ tends to hit between 50 (meh) and 54 percent (great) against the spread from year to year. It isn’t always the single best performer, but it holds its own. And beyond picks, it goes deeper than any other set of college football analytics on the market. You can go into granular detail regarding team strengths and weaknesses in a way that no other set of ratings allows. (See the annual team statistical profiles as proof.)
This year, I will be posting the weekly S&P+ picks at SB Nation instead of FSH.
Because I like to experiment, however, I won’t just be posting the official S&P+ picks. Go to this Google doc, and you will find three sets of picks: S&P+, F/+ (combined ratings from S&P+ and Brian Fremeau’s FEI), and what I’m calling an adjusted S&P+ pick, in which I attempt to account for two additional factors: week of play and type of game.
Week of play: I’m finding that there are cycles to scoring averages throughout a given season. Week 1 typically falls below the season scoring average, while the final weeks of the season tend to perk up in the scoring department. This adjusted projection will take this into account.
Game type: It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that the standard deviation of possible results in a game against FCS competition, for instance, is different than that of a conference game. This projection will also adjust for different types of games. This will mean some pretty extreme projections (Arkansas by 63 over FAMU, for example), but we’ll see how it performs.

New This Week: Lorde, Big Boi, Beth Ditto, and More
Searching for something to listen to this weekend? Yahoo Music has you covered with a rundown of some of this week’s biggest and buzzing releases, including Lorde, Big Boi, Beth Ditto, and more. Check back every Friday for a fresh list of albums to help fuel your weekend playlists.
Lorde: Melodrama (Lava Music/Republic). Almost four years after releasing her debut, Lorde returns with her eagerly anticipated sophomore set. On it, the now 20-year-old singer graduates to adulthood, expressing a grown-up range of emotions including some particularly sensitive reflections on broken relationships.
youtube
Big Boi: BOOMIVERSE (Epic). Big Boi has provided hip-hop with some of the genre’s most catchy and multilayered tunes, both as one-half of OutKast and on his own. On this, his third solo album, he continues his clever shuffle of musical styles to fine effect. The guest list is solid, including Adam Levine, Snoop Dogg, Killer Mike, LunchMoney Lewis, Gucci Mane, and Kurupt.
youtube
Beth Ditto: Fake Sugar (Myra’s Child/Virgin). Five years after her last release with former band Gossip, Ditto releases her first solo record, which shows off everything the Arkansas native is made of. Particularly engaging is her ability to sonically shape-shift, zooming from rock to blues to pop to Southern-tinged soul.
youtube
Royal Blood: How Did We Get So Dark? (Warner). British rock duo Royal Blood follows up its 2014 debut with this set, experimenting with more of its penchant for melodic strength. Here, the pair also play with different levels of intensity, as well as try out harmony vocals for the first time.
youtube
The Drums: Abysmal Thoughts (ANTI-/Epitaph). The Drums’ infectious sound — written and curated by frontman Jonny Pierce — somehow manages to become even more catchy on their fourth album, traversing sunny pop to darker, more atmospheric studies. It’s a complex yet highly accessible work.
youtube
Alison Moyet: Other (Cooking Vinyl). Moyet’s ninth solo album is a cinematic, lush showcase for her greatest asset: Her enormous voice. In addition to beautifully presenting that inescapable talent, the record shows off Moyet’s thought-provoking work as a lyricist.
youtube
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit: The Nashville Sound (Southeastern). Isbell is a highly respected name in the Americana scene; this album follows up 2015’s critically acclaimed Something More Than Free, which won two Grammy Awards and two Americana Music Association Awards. Here, he continues to develop his colorful, articulate, and poetic songwriting chops.
youtube
Royal Trux: Platinum Tips + Ice Cream (Drag City). Performance art comes alive with the latest from the NYC duo, as they presented unrehearsed music in real time to a few thousand people in California and NYC to create a “new/live/old song/new performance album.”
youtube
Cheap Trick: We’re All Alright! (Big Machine). Powerpop legends Cheap Trick are on their 18th studio album, and haven’t lost a lick of their appeal in 35 years. This may possibly be their catchiest album yet…no small feat given their catalog’s strength.
youtube
Ride: Weather Diaries (Wichita Recordings). The band’s first album in more than 20 years is filled with classic ’90s touches that will be sure to bring forth nostalgia, including combinations of distortion, melody/harmony, rhythmic beats, and sleek production.
youtube
Nickelback: Feed the Machine (BMG Rights Management). The much-maligned rock group is delivering their ninth studio album, and — sorry haters — it’s becoming less and less viable to put them down. This set is enjoyable: Grungy, hard-driven, takes itself a bit too seriously, a bit predictably political given the current climate, but is still infectious.
youtube
Fleet Foxes: Crack-Up (Nonesuch). Six years after their sophomore album comes Fleet Foxes’ third effort, a well-crafted, thoughtful, and uncompromising entry into the world of indie rock. It’s clear the band used their time wisely and meticulously in crafting this release.
youtube
Gretchen Wilson: Ready to Get Rowdy (Redneck). The infamous Redneck Woman took a couple of years off to focus on raising her teenage daughter, but is back and in her usual style with this release. Rowdy is an apt way to put it, as it’s pure old-school party country. Wilson’s good friend Kid Rock makes an appearance, as well.
youtube
Styx: The Mission (Alpha Dog 2T/UMe). Ready for a good concept album? If you’ve been feeling the market is short on such things, Styx’s first album in 14 years should be just the prog-rock journey you need. The album was created in Nashville over the course of two years and takes listeners on a intergalactic trip.
youtube
Matthew Sweet: Tomorrow Forever (S. Matthew Sweet). It’s been six years since we’ve heard from pop-master Sweet, and he returns here in fine form with help from some talented friends: Members of the Zombies, the Bangles, Velvet Crush, and the Jayhawks.
youtube
Steve Earle & the Dukes: So You Wanna be an Outlaw (Warner). This record is dedicated to the country outlaw of them all, Waylon Jennings. Earle explores his country songwriting roots, choosing collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert to polish them off.
youtube
Goldie: The Journey Man (Metalheadz/Cooking Vinyl). The drum and bass legend is back with a double album, his first solo release in nearly two decades. It features vocalists Natalie Duncan, Terri Walker, Tyler Lee Daly, Natalie Williams, José James, Naomi Pryor, and Goldie’s own wife Mika Wassenaar Price.
youtube
Portugal. The Man: Woodstock (Atlantic). The band tapped producers including the Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Danger Mouse, John Hill for their latest, with the result being a thoughtful, approachable, and emotional collection of songs.
youtube
CKY: The Phoenix (eOne Music). Rising from the ashes — well, okay, just about eight years hiatus — is CKY’s good old fashioned hard-rock vibe. Expect raw, driving grooves and don’t even bother playing this if you’re not going to turn the volume high.

Every Friday, artists drop anticipated albums, surprise singles, and hyped collaborations. As part of New Music Friday, EW’s music team chooses some of the essential new tunes. From Foo Fighters’ raucous return to Fifth Harmony’s first post-Camila single, here are the week’s most noteworthy releases.
Foo Fighters, “Run”
The latest single from Dave Grohl & Co. is unadulterated alt-rock radio goodness, fusing the sweeping arpeggios of 2007’s “The Pretender” with the breakneck thrash of 2011’s “Rope.” The Foos might’ve dressed up as old folks for the song’s music video, but that’s only because on record they sound as youthfully vital as ever. —Eric Renner Brown
Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane, “Down”
The first Fifth Harmony single since Camila Cabello’s 2016 departure features a bouncing beat, polished vocals, and an unlikely assist from Atlanta trap king Gucci Mane. Best of all, the unexpected union totally works. —E.R.B.
Lorde, “Perfect Places”
For the closer from her upcoming second album Melodrama, due June 16, the New Zealand pop sensation turned to “Green Light” collaborators Jack Antonoff and Frank Dukes once again, as well as Miike Snow frontman Andrew Wyatt. The resulting cut is — you guessed it — another blast of anthemic arena-pop girded by vibrant synths and stomping percussion. —E.R.B.
Arcade Fire, “Everything Now”
The wait for new music from the Canadian indie-rockers has been long — outside of their January collaboration with Mavis Staples, they’ve stayed largely quiet since their absolutely bonkers 2013 double LP Reflektor. But they rewarded patient fans Thursday with the announcement of their fifth album, Everything Now, and the release of its slow-rolling title track. Queue this up and hit the road — this is highway music at its finest. —Madison Vain
Bleachers, “Gone Now”
In recent years, Jack Antonoff’s name has been associated with superstar collaborators like Lorde and Taylor Swift — but Bleachers’ second album, an anthemic collection built around the ideas of loss and moving forward, proves the musician’s just as impressive as a frontman as he is behind the scenes. With songs that range from jazzy to full-on pop, the set is a cohesive but varied compilation of sounds tied together by Antonoff’s dance-worthy brand of catharsis. —Ariana Bacle
Radiohead, “I Promise”
OKNOTOK, the forthcoming 20th-anniversary reissue of Radiohead’s seminal OK Computer, will contain three previously unreleased tracks. Friday, the British alt-rockers shared one of them, “I Promise,” and a music video to go along with it. The cut is peak ’90s Radiohead, with a rat-a-tat, military-issue drum beat and solemnly strummed guitars that evoke “Fake Plastic Trees.” —E.R.B.
Halsey, “hopeless fountain kingdom”
Since breaking big in 2015 with her lo-fi debut, Badlands, Halsey has sung on the Chainsmokers massive hit “Closer,” duetted with Justin Bieber, and, along with playing massive festivals like Coachella, sold out Madison Square Garden. Now, she’s returned with her arena-sized second LP. “Badlands was this kind of DIY record,” she told EW last month. “Now I’ve toured the world and have dans that I want to make happy. The space I need to fill with my sound is not a bedroom anymore, it’s an arena.” —M.V.
Dan Auerbach, “Waiting on a Song”
In a recent interview with EW, the Black Keys frontman described his second solo effort as a “musical stew” of American genres including rock, country, blues, and soul. Auerbach invited ace session musicians such as John Prine, Duane Eddy, and Jerry Douglas to his Nashville studio to bring cuts like shuffling “Livin’ in Sin” and slinky “Cherrybomb” to life. —E.R.B.
Major Lazer, “Know No Better”
Just in time for summer, Major Lazer have returned with a six-song EP packed with club-oriented, globally influenced jams. “Our goals are just to make great music,” de facto frontman Diplo told EW earlier this week. “and these [songs] are all pretty weird.” Dig in. —M.V.
Roger Waters, “Is This the Life We Really Want?”
For the Pink Floyd founder’s first solo album in 25 years, he teamed with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Originally conceived as a radio play, it’s long on ballads, but there is the killer uptempo rocker, “Smell the Roses.” It’s also full of his characteristic doomsaying: “It’s like truth is now a completely alien concept,” Waters told EW in May. “Keep people dumb, uneducated, whatever, so you can go on milking them.” —Kevin O’Donnell
alt-J, “Relaxer”
Delicate and sinister, alt-J’s third album is an exercise in extremes and experimentation. “Hit Me Like a Snare Drum” is straight from the ’60s-era New York rock scene, while the menacing “In Cold Blood” could easily soundtrack the villain’s entrance in a ’90s video game. “They are eight very different songs and eight very different moods,” the group’s keyboardist and vocalist Gus Unger-Hamilton told EW. “It’s quite a well-balanced meal — gives you all the food groups emotionally.” The English band could have easily peaked in 2012 when they won the coveted Mercury Prize for their debut, An Awesome Wave; Relaxer is proof that’s far from true. —A.B.
Liam Gallagher, “Wall of Glass”
The mercurial Oasis singer teamed with star producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) for his swaggering solo single, off his upcoming full-length As You Were. “Wall of Glass” isn’t Oasis, but with its wailing harmonica, angelic backing vocals, and propulsive guitar, it ably revives the iconic sound of the legendary Britpop group’s early records. —E.R.B.
Prophets of Rage, “Unf— the World”
When Prophets of Rage — the supergroup comprised of Rage Against the Machine members, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, and Cypress Hill’s B-Real — debuted last year, they seemed to be a temporary novelty borne from the unrest wrought by America’s controversial election season. But the election of Donald Trump appears to have spurred the radically progressive hard-rock group, and they’re releasing their self-titled debut album in September. Over a quintessentially pummeling RATM beat, Chuck lays out their mission statement on “Unf— the World”: “Give a damn, evil can’t stand when the people take a stand.” Michael Moore directed the cut’s disturbing video, adding to its incendiary effect. —E.R.B.
Elton John & Jack White, “Two Fingers of Whiskey”
For The American Epic Sessions, Jack White and T Bone Burnett recreated Depression-era recording equipment and invited modern artists of all stripes to cut versions of classic tunes. They’ve already released songs by Nas and Alabama Shakes off the upcoming compilation and shared the White and Elton John collaboration “Two Fingers of Whiskey” on Thursday. John’s honky-tonk piano and White’s raw guitar highlight the song, composed by the former’s longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. —E.R.B.
Amber Coffman, “City of No Reply”
The debut solo LP from the former Dirty Projectors singer-guitarist is a batch of 11 effervescent indie-pop songs. “No Coffee” and “Dark Night” feature irresistible, instantly memorable melodies, while cuts like “If You Want My Heart” incorporate some of the sonic weirdness that defined her previous band. “I wanted to do this since I was about five years old,” Coffman told EW last month of the project, which features musicians like percussionist Mauro Refosco (Atoms for Peace, Red Hot Chili Peppers). “It was a really special experience.” —E.R.B.
Dua Lipa, “Dua Lipa”
“I never want to seem weak in my songs,” the 21-year-old told EW earlier this year. “The second I start writing a sad song, I always change it to make it seem like I was more empowered.” That approach yielded her debut, which is the disco record of the summer and features proven hits like “Be the One” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” along with fresh cuts like the strutting Miguel duet “Lost in Your Light.” —K.O.
The War on Drugs, “Holding On”
Propelled by twinkling synths and shimmering guitars, the lead single from the Philly band’s upcoming album A Deeper Understanding, out August 25, picks up where their 2014 smash Lost in the Dream left off: Windows-down-and-speeding-down-the-highway heartland rock bliss. —E.R.B.
PARTYNEXTDOOR, “COLOURS 2” EP
The four-song surprise EP from the OVO-affiliated crooner is a gorgeous, brief display of his chilly, after-hours R&B. —E.R.B.
Todd Terje, “Maskindans”
No word yet on when fans can expect the second album from the Norwegian disco-house artist, but Terje dropped a kinetic cover Det Gylne Triangel’s 1982 song “Maskindans” Friday — featuring fresh vocals from Triangel. Nearly breaking 10 minutes, the unrelenting track is another essential dancefloor odyssey from Terje. —E.R.B.
Various Artists, “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)”
The soundtrack for the Captain Underpants film adaptation is as outrageous and silly as the movie it accompanies. There are original compositions from Lil Yachty, Adam Lambert, and, of course, “Weird Al” Yankovic’s absurd theme song for the tidy whitey crimefighter. —E.R.B.
Benjamin Booker, “Witness”
The 27-year-old Booker sounds something like Otis Redding covering Ty Segall in an abandoned warehouse. His second album is also his best, from the Arcs-esque lilt of “Overtime” to the gospel-tinged title track. —E.R.B.
Broken Social Scene, “Skyline”
Broken Social Scene are no strangers to lyrical repetition — 2003’s “Anthems for a 17-Year-Old Girl,” one of the Canadian collective’s best-known tracks, is almost entirely made of the hypnotizing chant, “Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me” — so it’s no surprise their latest song, the folksy “Skyline,” is just one repeating verse. It’s also unsurprising that its four minutes don’t redundant or tired, but soaring, rousing, and perfect for sunsets. —A.B.
Luke Combs, “This One’s For You”
The country breakout found chart success this year with his moody rocker “Hurricane” — and now he’s dropped a whole collection of scorchers. His debut LP scans the modern country landscape, blending nostalgic heartland rock (“Memories Are Made Of”), cornfield-sized party jams (“Beer Can”), honky-tonk delights (“Honky Tonk Highway”), and bleeding-heart guitar ballads (“One Number Away”). —M.V.
U2, “The Joshua Tree” (Super Deluxe Reissue)
Not lucky enough to catch U2 on their special summer tour commemorating the 25th anniversary of their seminal album The Joshua Tree? Never fear: The Irish rockers have goodies for you, too. This sprawling reissue collects the original album, B-sides from the era, fresh remixes, and a 1987 live set from Madison Square Garden for the definitive document of perhaps the band’s greatest period. —E.R.B.
Bob Marley & The Wailers, “Exodus 40”
The album that TIME named the best of the 20th century celebrates its 40th anniversary tomorrow, and this three-disc reissue marks the occasion. There’s the classic LP, but also a reworked, resequenced version by Marley’s son Ziggy — featuring unearthed vocals and instrumental passages from the sessions — and a sizzling 1977 Marley concert recorded at London’s Rainbow Theatre. —E.R.B.
