Week 3
So after a bit of research and with some help from the lovely people at the local fish shop, my lil underwater garden is looking luscious and healthy!
I’ve chosen plants which are nitrate hungry. The LFS guy said that plants that are bought off online stores sometimes arrive so beat up that they usually can’t muster the energy to root. It might have been a pitch to sell me some plants but I found that he was right. All the plants I bought managed to take root within the week and are looking bushy and happy.
The Monte Carlo is now completely cleaned out and the Rotala also got trashed too. Instead we have water weed, water wisteria and hornwort as the background plants (all nitrate hungry fast growers) and we have Anubias on the rocks and Java fern by the filter. As the Hornwart grows, I chop the new shoots up into little bouquets held by lead weights. They function as new plants so I can keep filling in the background.
The best news of all; the tank is cycled! I’ll give it a week to see if it’s stable and then we can get some wet pets in there!!

I have some bladder snails in a big jar, and sometimes they go upside-down and crawl along the underside of the water's surface. Their little mouths are going, so they seem to be grazing on the surface from below. Weird, wonderful little creatures!

The cerithoids are an important clade of snails, characterised as herbivorous detrivores, present in freshwater to marine environments. Among them is the spiky tower or trumpet snail from insular Southeast Asia, Thiara winteri, which is also known as the prambanan snail, or even the prambanan mini-conch. Thus it is of zoological interest to point out that the genus Thiara are not really true conches, being related much more closely to the saltwater ceriths that are also seen in the sand beds of reef tanks. Shells of T. winteri should have a spiky appearance, which is where the comparison to the saltwater conches first originated. And mature T. winteri should be about 2 to 5 centimeters long, or at least 3/4 of an inch in length, and potentially growing to at least 2 inches. Unlike the conches and ceriths seen in the tanks of marine aquarium retailers, T. winteri is strictly a freshwater gastropod species.
I have to hand some collection data for T. winteri. This species is found in warm water with a temperature of 29 to 30 degrees, and a surprisingly low pH of about 5.5 to 6.5. Other freshwater snails species were rare or absent from other localities along the same river, except another, unnamed species of Thiara which has broader habitat preferences, and thus overlapped more with other freshwater snails, including the related thiarid genus Melanoides, which is also traded alive for aquarium use. T. winteri and it's congeners are burrowing snails that require a soft substrate in which to dig. Should they breed they possess the interesting, viviparous life history, that is common among such freshwater cerith allies. They possess a cephalic pouch for the purposes of brooding their offspring, which is a charming parallel to the marsupial mammals on land, and the seahorses among the fishes.

they’re aquatic gastropods and not terrestrial but can we get some rabbit snail love?
BIG fan of rabbit snails. I got one for my aquarium a while back but it's been missing in action for a while. Hope it's okay and just hiding amongst the many many many plants. Anyhoo here's a wild one to admire:

Fish Wishes!
(Images aren’t mine, snatched from google)
Ok so I’ve thought about this for awhile and I’ve seen a couple of these guys in fish stores and done the research to figure out what’s going to be happiest in my 15G nano tank.
Honey Gourami as the centrepiece fish
When I see these guys iRL, they’re always inquisitive, swimming right up to things and then giving them a little pat with their feelers. They’re cute and interesting to watch. Generally considered a peaceful community fish but Reddit has been full of stories of them bullying their own kind until they die :< As they’re happy solo, I think I can give them a stress free life being the centrepiece fish of the tank with a few easygoing nano fish friends.
Or Sparkling Gourami as the centrepiece?
I love the idea of Sparklers. I fell in love with the YouTube series from Foo the Flowerhorn where they set up a tank with sparklers and amanos. In reality I think it’s very risky for the amanos; I’ve had LFS guys and Reddit posts give me anecdotes about the sparklers eating shrimp or killing them off slowly by beating them into hiding. Let’s be honest, I do this hobby to relax. I’m not going to have violence in my tank! Such a shame as they’re so pretty. The image of these guys with their turquoise scales and a backdrop of a bunch of baby blue jelly shrimps would be soo cool but I know there would be suffering so it would never be worth it.
Nano fish
Celestial Pearl Danios
Excuse the shitty iPhone vid. Sometimes you just have to go to see some fish iRL to figure if you’re really going to love them.
I’ll tell you what, every time I see these guys in real life they make my heart flutter with how stinking cute they are. They have beautiful colours and are so small. The ones I’ve seen in store have been about 0.8” in length.
Chilli rasbora
These are another species that always catch my attention in person. Their little faces and big eyes are too cute to handle and their body shape looks like a miniature red shark. They’re also micro predators so they would have a great time gobbling up the creatures and loose eggs in the tank. Thankfully their mouths are too small to do any damage to shrimps!
Extras;
When I think of all the gross lil non-fish creatures I would enjoy in a tank, my mind always gravitates to cherry shrimp or amanos. With amanos I think i’d like the peace of mind to rely on these lil dudes to clean up the nastier hairier algae if it turns up.
However, a hoard of cherries swarming the tank and filling it with bright colours would also be so fun! Blue jellies are the cutest but bright orange ones look like you’ve got a tank full of pre cooked shrimp or living cheetos.
Anyways, that’s my fish wishes! Im not going to get every one of these fish, just a centrepiece fish, some skrimps if compatible and a small shoal of nano fish.
Next weekend I might go to the LFS and see what I can find, I’m so excited!

I posted these pictures of a tiny baby snail on reddit, and two people told me it's a bladder snail. I have a few in my tank that probably hitchhiked in as eggs on live plants I bought recently. It sounds like they shouldn't cause problems as long as I'm not over-feeding the tank, so I'll see how this goes!

Be it irritatingly or amusingly, one of the linguistic phenomena surrounding the aquarium trade is the innovation of pop culture themed names, for unfamiliar species. Thus the name of King Koopa nerite has become attached to Neritina juttingae, a neritid snail imported from insular Southeast Asia. Thus is a small, grazing nerite species, growing to no more than 2 centimeters, or 3/4 of an inch, but the outer surface of its shell possesses an attractive 'horned' appearance, compensating for its lack of striking coloration, which can nonetheless be a bit varied in this species, which is a trait it shares with some other neritid species.
At maturity N. juttingae is a freshwater nerite species, rather than a marine or brackish one. Although the imported animals seem to originate from Borneo, the species was first described from the River Musi in Sumatra. People often assume that any freshwater snails requires water that is on the hard and alkaline side, but the pH of the Musi varies from about 5 to 8, and human activities are likely responsible for the elevated pH at certain sampling stations, without which the average pH reading would be 6.5. Therefore the aquarium for N. jutringae should actually be a little on the acidic side, but still fairly close to neutral.
Though the water temperature of the Musi is otherwise 27 to 30 degrees centigrade, in locations where it is overhung and shaded, it is more often 25 degrees. Observed in the aquarium, N. juttingae has a penchant for eating dead tree leaves, indicating that the water temperature should ideally be a little below 27 degrees centigrade. These snails are typical nerites, in that they are best categorized as benign, herbivorous grazers, that therefore show no interest in motile animals as potential prey.
