I am so deeply sad to hear of Tilikum passing and beyond happy that he has finally been released from his prison. I am angry that his natural right to live and die a happy life in the environment he belongs was taken away from him. Instead he was given over 30 years of physical & emotional pain and suffering. Tilikum is a legend, I am so sorry & embarrassed that I am human and I could not help him. I am so, so unbelievably sad to hear about the loss of Tilikum. Anyone who knows me knows how strongly I felt and how moved I was from his documentary. It hurt my heart in so many ways knowing that there was never anything I could personally do to help. The oldest orca in captivity is finally free after over 3 decades of being miserable in SeaWorld. I DO NOT support SeaWorld - YES I know that they haven't taken a whale into captivity in over 40 years, and yes I know that the handlers and trainers love their animals so very much and take good care of them - but they DO NOT belong there. They belong in the ocean, swimming with the vibes of the sea, most importantly, wherever the hell they want to. They are not ours to take as a form of stupid entertainment. ••• Rest In Peace Tilly🖤🐳. Blackfish Documentary Review

Blackfish greatly impacted mainstream culture. When the film first came out in 2013, at Sundance Film Festival, everyone who I talked to had seen the documentary. I grew up in Southern California and went to SeaWorld as a kid, so all of my friends and I were talking about it and the truth behind this amusement park we grew up going to. Although Tilikum was held at the Orlando location, it is still astonishing to learn that this was going on not that long ago when I could have possibly attended the park.

People nowadays truly care about the safety of the planet and animals, so when Blackfish came out there were a lot of people outraged by the story of Tilikum and the breeding going on to produce these show animals. A film that was not associated with the theme park had created outrage within the public.

This documentary definitely created a dialogue about this hidden issue of what kind of breeding was happening at SeaWorld. Absolutely no one knew that this original orca came from such terrible living conditions to being the star of an American amusement park. 

Like they state in the film, there was no record of this type of behavior ever happening in the wild with these orca whales. They were being held in these modules that were only 20ft wide and 30ft deep. An orca whale can grow up to 32ft long. The film was all about exposing this story and the events happening behind closed doors. They still hid the truth after multiple deaths occurred.

Once people saw the film, attendance began to decrease at all of the locations and the stock price began to tumble. Above is a chart from The Washington Post showing how this film affecting SeaWorld. This one documentary influenced the Southern California location to fade out their orca whale shows and caused the chief executive of SeaWorld Entertainment, Jim Atchison, to resign. “In the first nine months of 2014, SeaWorld's revenue fell by more than seven percent, and its attendance dropped by nearly five percent.” (Washington Post)

The film resulted in a few hashtags that circled my frequented social media platforms. If you search #FreeTilly, #IAmTilikum, #Blackfish or simply #SeaWorld you’ll see multiple posts of people reacting to Tilikum’s story and SeaWorld. It is incredible what one documentary did to expose the hidden secrets behind an amusement park so many people loved.
