I'm still learning so much BL history and I was hoping you'd be willing to elaborate a little on your tag "Saint has given so much to an industry that was so cruel to him." I really only know that he worked with Perth and Zee but I don't know anything beyond that.

So Saint and Perth worked on Love by Chance together in 2018 and there was a lot of drama going on behind the scenes between their managers. Most of the Love by Chance cast—including Perth—was managed by the same company. I’m pretty sure Saint was the only one who wasn’t and Perth’s management did not like that. They did everything they possibly could to shun Saint from the production, including ACCUSING HIM OF BEING A SEX WORKER.

They started a bunch of rumors about how Saint’s management was selling him to rich old men and insinuated that’s how he was booking jobs. Adults said this. About a nineteen-year-old. Because they were mad he got cast in the lead role of a BL series instead of one of their actors. They eventually apologized, admitting culpability in the process, but dear lord.

It’s also important to note that Perth was a literal child at the time and had no clue what his management was doing. He and Saint have somehow managed to stay friends despite all of this, but Saint obviously refused to come back for LBC 2.

After that, Saint still agreed to do Why R U? with Zee. Their rift is a bit more run-of-the-mill—because what could possibly top accusing a teenager of being a sex worker??!—but I believe the story is that Saint pissed off some of Zee’s stans by making a joke during an interview about how Zee never texts him back. (Which is ironic coming from the FK fandom where First does this to Khaotung literally all the time.) Zee’s stans canceled him, doing the usual cyberbullying routine on social media, and he hasn’t been in a BL since.

Truly, I don’t think this industry has put anyone through more hell than Saint and although he never really talks about it, Perth has gotten a lot more open in recent years about how much the industry has damaged his mental health and I have to think a lot of that is because of this incident specifically. He was only sixteen at the time!

But despite (or maybe because of) all of that, Saint created a production company that seems to treat its actors very well and encourages them to live life to the queerest if that’s what they want to do. I doubt we’ll ever see Saint act in anything that he isn’t producing himself again, which is a shame, but I will always be thankful to him for taking a chance on GAP. He literally paid for that production out of his own pocket with no guarantee that it would be successful simply because he believed that queer women should be able to see themselves represented on screen. He’s a true ally and that’s why I try to support Idol Factory regardless of whether their shows are to my taste or not.

Since I’ve started listening to kpop and watching Kdramas and BL’s/GL’s one thing that will forever confuse/piss me off is the apologies for dating, getting married or starting a family. Like why are they apologizing for doing normal human stuff!?!? I will never understand people who think that these idols and actors aren’t real people and shouldn’t have lives outside of their careers. It’s very weird…

I figured I might as well make this a little blog series, since there will be more to address in upcoming episodes.

Before we dive into the nitty gritty... I really want to acknowledge the production value of The Loyal Pin and all the hard work that went into making it. The characters, the sets, the wardrobe, the dialect... everything was an honest representation of a historically accurate period drama. The first episode was perfectly curated to establish the series' universe. I was really impressed with Becky in particular because I've been following her since GAP, and I know how much she struggled with reacquainting herself to the language when she moved back home to Thailand from New Zealand. To have the added pressure of maintaining a period accurate dialect was not easy for her. Freen has proudly commented on how hard Becky worked to really learn the script... and it shows. Well done, Bec Bec!!!

Let's Talk Thai Culture...

We'll start off by breaking down Thai Royal Language Terminology (คำราชาศัพท์)

The Savettavarit Royal House Consists of 1) His Royal Highness, The Prince Thai Royal Title: พระองค์ชาย (pronounced phra-ong chai) reserved for direct male descendants of the king

2) Her Serene Highness, Princess Alisa Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าหญิง (pronounced mom-jao ying) a non-inherited title for being the wife of a prince (abbr. M.C.)

3) His Serene Highness, Prince Anantavut Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าชาย (pronounced mom-jao chai) a title for male children of a prince, meaning secondary prince (abbr. M.C.)

4) His Serene Highness, Prince Anon Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าชาย (pronounced mom-jao chai) a title for male children of a prince, meaning secondary prince (abbr. M.C.)

5) Her Serene Highness, Princess Anilaphat Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าหญิง (pronounced mom-jao ying) a title for female children of a prince, meaning secondary princess (abbr. M.C.)

The Kasidit Noble Family Consists of 1) Her Serene Highness, Princess Pattamika Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าหญิง (pronounced mom-jao ying) a non-inherited title for being the 'adopted' sister of the prince (abbr. M.C.)

2) Lady Pilanthita Thai Noble Title: หม่อมราชวงศ์ (pronounced mom rat-cha-wong) a title assumed by 'commoner' children of หม่อมเจ้า (M.C.), meaning their ancestry can be traced back to a king (abbr. M.R.) The Common Address: You'll hear certain characters use the term ท่าน (pronounced than). It is the formal address between members of royalty/nobility to acknowledge certain members of higher rank. It essentially means "Your Highness". For example, regarding Princess Pattamika, Pin addresses her 'adoptive' mother (f.) as ท่านหญิง (than ying) and Anil refers to her 'aunt' as ท่านอา (than ah*). *อา (ah) is how one would refer to their father's younger sibling

Another term you might have heard was เพคะ (pronounced phe-kha). It is less formal and used to express familiarity. Both Prik and Lady Pin use this response to address Princess Anil as "Your Highness". Princess Alisa can also be heard using this phrase in conversation with, and to respond to, her husband.

She is considered a Noble 'Commoner', so Lady Pin would be formally addressed as คุณหญิง (khun ying) given her title. However, Pin is depicted as being more reserved and adherent to social structure. This is very telling of her social class amongst the higher ranking royal family who took her in. Pin has a lot more to lose than Anil should she stray from class expectations, and they did a wonderful job establishing that in the first episode. (I'm sure this will come into play even more as the characters age up... and I'm very much looking forward to it.)

Lower ranked servants/attendants (บ่าว - bao) can be heard using the term เจ้า (jao) to indicate their showing of respect when addressing someone of superior status.

Pronunciation and Formality: Without even knowing the Thai language, you might have noticed that the characters heavily enunciate their dialect when speaking. It's an accurate depiction of a "prim" and "proper" royal family. Even how Anil addresses her two brothers is very formal: พี่ชายรอง (meaning second eldest brother) and พี่ชายใหญ่ (meaning eldest brother). If you're going to do a period drama... this is how it's done!!!

Should we discuss the Thai dishes highlighted in this episode? ...Why not?

สองมาลีลอยแก้ว (pronounced song mali loy kaew) is a Thai dessert comprised of watermelon and mamuang dong (มะม่วงดอง - pickled mangoes). The fruit is carved into floral shapes and arranged to "float" in sugar syrup with ice, hence its name... which literally translates to 'Two Flowers Floating in Glass'.

นำ้ปลาหวาน (pronounced nam pla whan) is a Thai dipping sauce comprised of palm sugar, fermented fish sauce, shallots and chili. It's usually paired with firm and tart fruits... like green mangoes. (It's an acquired taste hehe)

The last thing I wanted to mention are Thai night markets and fairs (ตลาดกลางคืน). They are still hugely popular for social outings and, like the series has shown, are comprised of various stalls offering street food, clothes, accessories, attractions, etc. They're very popular amongst tourists, as well.

I hope this wasn't too overwhelming with information... but I just wanted to be as thorough as possible because this series is shaping up to be, what is essentially, a love letter to Thai tradition.

- someone asking what her family thought and becky saying "they know it was acting but they were like 'hmmmm'"

hi i appreciate what you and the other anon said about the ship names. this is well said, and important to remember it's super different from literally shipping two real people together. their agencies debut them with their couple name not specifically their character names. gine/jin couples are like love teams (phillipines) sometimes where they lean into that off screen chemistry. so using their real name as the ship name is not uncommon. often they will collaborate and have more projects in the future that are different characters (freenbecky and milklove for example). at the end of the day just be their fan and listen to them they create this media for fans to enjoy but deserve their privacy and our respect

hello! i think the 'icky to use people's real names to be ship names' is something that westerners like me have more trouble with, to be honest, especially when you look back at the history we have with bands and ship names and how that seems to have taken a toll on them (and i was never a fan of these, but one direction and fifth harmony are two that comes to mind first). for me, it's that old story of people in the west trying to impose their dynamics and way of thinking to other countries without taking into account that these places already have well set ways to work. and i'm not saying that people in the east are safe from the mentality of 'if we put this two names together they are super dating'. we've seen in the past year alone how ships in general affected artists in their real lives (freen having her privacy inside her own home invaded, oh**anon fans sending trucks in front of gmm, krist deactivating his socials bc he can't be friends with a past ship, and so on).

ship names and ship culture are just for fun. it's a way for companies to get that money, and for actors and singers to get that promotion. it's really important that we keep the mentality healthy as fans. there's nothing wrong with thinking two people look good together and say i ship them. it's a way to support the actors you like, and their ship and the content they create for the fans. this is just for fun. it's a game, and if you don't know how to play it, i would suggest you don't play it (you as in general you, not you in specific anon, pls).

The White House needs to launch a program to provide free N95 masks to the public.

Right now, in many cities and states across the country there is no distribution of free N95 masks to the general public. The federal N95 mask distribution program at pharmacies ended awhile ago. Even when it was running, the program was inadequate. Supplies were limited and there was no way to look up which stores had masks in stock. In addition, most drug stores had no mask requirements, making those places unsafe, particularly for people at higher risk.

Everyone has a right to protect themselves from COVID-19, not just those who can afford to purchase N95 masks out of pocket.

@purrpickle did a beautiful explanation of the episode 11 sam coming home begging mon not to leave her scene and that is one of my top moments of all time but i can’t say anything better than what she said so i will pick a different one. but i also wanna add the scene where neung calls sam and tells her mon is leaving her and sam PANICS is so special to me.

so! i am gonna say the reunion scene in episode 12. from the throwback of sam getting out of the car to the kiss after being apart for months it is absolutely perfect no notes. sam RUNNING TO HER GIRL? HER FACE OF RELIEF AND FINALLY PEACE AFTER BEING MISERABLE AND SUFFERING FOR MONTHS SHUT UP. her saying she can’t live without mon? kill me. mon saying she can’t be around her without having her and she wants to forget? kill me. sam saying she doesn’t want her to forget about them and begging her to stay? KILL ME. god what a scene.

honorable mentions because i suck: the sam choosing mon scene that i absolutely have seen 293847744892 times. freen absolutely kills it, the song is perfect everything is perfect i love it.
