How I Used Freelancing Sites to Learn New Skills & Make Money From Home

It all began in that summer - when I graduated from college. Being super excited to kick-start my career, I immediately made an account on various job searching websites, checking all current openings. 

To my surprise, I found that having a diploma isn’t enough to compete with hundreds of applicants, therefore some extra skills might be useful in gaining more confidence for that first interview. However, if I gave myself time to learn new skills before starting to apply to jobs, I had to figure out a way to not only do this, but also make some money in the same time. 

I wanted to kill two birds with one stone and that’s how I discovered freelancing platforms. 

Here’s how I managed to learn new skills and make money online, from home: 

1. Freelancer Contests on Freelancer.com

I started going through the contests and closely reading the contest holder’s instructions. Although I had no experience at all with logo or banner design, I spent a few days watching tutorials online and started creating. 

At first, I submitted simple ones for the lowest prize contests, just to see what the rating received would be. According to the client’s notes, I would immediately modify and submit a new version, being very careful to provide a design that’s very close to their expectations. 

Only a few days later, I already won a contest and a few more in the next weeks. There were also many failures, but it was incredible! I was actually making money while learning and practicing new skills. 

2. Applying to projects on Freelancer.com 

Once I gained more confidence in my ability to quickly learn new skills, I also started looking at the projects section on Freeelancer.com, more precisely, at the data entry ones which seemed easier to complete and they offered a quick way to make money as well. 

For any project that you bid on, you have to submit a proposal as well, in which you explain to the client why you are the right person to do the job any showcase your skills or any previous work. Since I didn’t have any, I focused on writing a convincing proposal. At that time, this was all pretty new and although I googled tips or tricks, I couldn’t find any, so I started developing my own style based on writing selling techniques I learned from various Youtube training videos. 

Despite having no reviews yet, I managed to get a few first projects which all included doing new things like working with Google Sheets, Google Docs and a lot of internet research for various information. My rating was incredible and I couldn’t believe that although I was doing this for the first time, I managed to be chosen for the projects and get five stars as well. 

3. Exploring selling on Fiverr.com and setting up my first gigs (service provided to the customer)

Once I came across this platform, I was amazed by the variety of services provided there by people from all over the world. I knew that it would be an awesome opportunity, not only to get ideas of new skills that I can acquire but also dive deeper into practicing my selling, customer support, and design skills. 

Being a seller on Fiverr is pretty much like owning a business and doing everything yourself:

constant optimization and monitorization of analytics 

I believe this was the time when I strongly started to develop, starting with analyzing other seller’s services and trying to see if I can learn to do the same thing. At first, I started with practicing on my own up until I was confident that I’m ready to ‘‘go live’’ with my gigs. 

Once I had my very first orders, I wanted to learn even more and combine different skills into my service, standing up from the competition. For example, for my PDF editing gig, at some point I was not only offering the editing of the file, but also I was offering the extra option of getting it converted in a word file or getting it as a fillable form, which made it more attractive for the client as they didn’t have to make three different orders, they could just make one which saves time and money (only 1 processing fee). 

As full-time employed now, I can honestly say that my freelancing experience has helped tremendously and I would recommend it to anyone, even if only testing it part-time. It could be one of the most valuable experiences when starting out your career, as you’re doing it while working with people from all over the Globe, pushing yourself to discover and learn something new every day to make it work.
