So yeah, I'm on brasil, and the Twitter thing...

So Twitter was the place where I got most of my commissions, and since I'm brasilian, I can't use it anymore. Though I will say, I am in awe of my government being surprisingly based and giving elon musk the middle finger, I'm definitely upset of how this screws me over. Can't fight against it, that was my primary place of posting the 'tiddy' stuff that actually got me followers and commissions, and now that's gone, meaning most of my revenue. Meaning that since the situation is that dire, I'm going to have to look for a job and put art on the backlog, maybe, we'll see.

Kind of ironic, first there was the ban, then this, it's kind of a sign that freelance artist ain't for me, lmao. Divine intervention! It seems Bluesky has messaging now, so I'm going to try to post there too. I'll see ya'll on the flipside.

Lack of resources and threats mark the work of freelancers covering human rights and the environment in Brazil

João Paulo Guimarães was 39 years old when, for the first time, his photo of an ocelot killed during the 2020 fires in the Pantana attracted a lot of attention.

A resident of Belém in northern Brazil, he had traveled about 1,800 miles away to the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland, paying his own way. Once there, he realized his work could have an impact.

"It was the first time I experienced one of my images going much further than I expected," Guimarães told LatAm Journalism Review (LJR). "I wasn't looking to be famous, rather relevant."

In the following years, Guimarães intensified his coverage of socio-environmental and human rights issues, also starting to write in addition to photographing. His work has gained recognition, and he routinely collaborates with outlets such as UOL, Repórter Brasil, Agência Pública, The Intercept Brasil and Mongabay. Despite the success, he sometimes still pays for materials out of his own pocket.

"You can make a living, benefit from grants and projects, but there's no money left to have a house," he said about the precariousness of the profession. “I live with my father-in-law and mother-in-law. If it weren’t for this, it wouldn’t be possible.”

On Dec. 14 Guimarães will release his first book, “O Caçador de Trolls - monstros sociais pelas lentes de um fotojornalista” (The Troll Hunter - social monsters through the lens of a photojournalist). In the book, enriched with various photographs, the journalist talks about his professional routine and the dilemmas he faces while bringing attention to often overlooked stories, such as those of threatened Indigenous communities, children surviving by collecting trash, and community leaders who have been murdered. He seeks to share these stories with the world and to change something. Between narrations of his coverage, including a strong focus on topics linked to Indigenous issues, the journalist talks about his personal concerns: the lack of money, the precariousness of traveling without a large organization behind him, endless hours of travel, the threats he suffers.

Guimarães' story is similar to that of many freelance reporters covering topics related to social and environmental justice in Brazil. Driven by a strong sense of mission, these professionals are faced with adversities ranging from little remuneration to a lack of interest from large media outlets to recurring threats from actors singled out in reporting. Despite insisting on not giving up, they refer to a broader trend: it is increasingly difficult to produce meaningful reporting in Brazil, especially when defending the most vulnerable.

not sure if this is something ppl say in english or other countries but whenever the weather is too hot, here in brasil we often say like "wow the sun is too hot today!!" as small talk about the weather and whatnot. south america as a whole is experiencing a heat wave these past weeks & here in my desert city the temperature has been around 34º~37ºC the whole week so far. very hot but other than being a sweaty mess 80% of the time, which to be fair i usually am even when it's not that hot, it's been sort of fine.

now see, i am very pale. if you're familiar with foundation shade naming systems, i'm a 130 on the fenty beauty shade finder. a mac NC15 if you will. if that means nothing to you, i am approximately the same colour of undercooked roux for a bechamel sauce. and today, i spent about 20 minutes on the passenger seat of a car, the estimated time between my freelance job and my home, with a stop on the mcdonald's drive thru for a milkshake, under the 3PM sun. and once i got home, after holding my milkshake and a mcflurry for my darling over my lap through the duration of our ride, i noticed my arms were Red. i fully experienced a maillard reaction in these 20 minutes, reaching the appropriate roux-like shade you'd want for your bechamel sauce base.

so yeah, the sun has been quite hot lately.

I've wanted to make a pinned post for a good long while, but it's been tricky to figure out what to say given how much has changed since I last made one when I used twitter so uh. here goes:

Hi there! Most people know me by Hazel, but close friends will know that is actually someone else and my name is Gabi, and I think most people know about me because I used to draw airplanes a lot. I still do, but I've been branching out into other things that I have fun with as well, so I guess that's the first thing about me, I am (for the most part) an artist of sorts.

I am also a bit of a mess for personal life reasons, which has been kinda making it harder to be constantly putting out art for the past year or so, but I'm slowly figuring it all out and getting back to a sustainable pace for myself, which is nice but still trying to find a balance.

ok so i zoned out while writing this and forgot what I was gonna say next, and holy shit what ive written so far flows weirdly, but whatever, we carry on

I'm hoping someday I'll be able to have a concept art/design portfolio that's so good itll get me hired either into a studio of sorts or let me be able to do freelance work, but for the time being I have been working on my own fun little 3d model projects amongst some other things, and I do have a patreon if you wanna support me, which would make you vry cool i think.

As for what I do when I'm not working on my pet projects and art, I rly like playing flight sims, having migraines every week (thats a lie i hate it) and meowing at my cats.

capitulo quatro - construir uma carreira nas artes

Vamos à pergunta de milhões: viver de arte dá dinheiro? No Brasil?

Primeiramente, existe uma diferença entre pagar as contas e ser destaque. Uma coisa não tem nada a ver com a outra.

Construir uma carreira, em qualquer área, dá muito trabalho! Especialmente se você for autônomo, o que é o caso da maioria dos artistas. É um caminho solitário, inclusive, porque cada um de nós terá suas próprias dificuldades. Alguns conseguirão pagar as contas em meses enquanto outros poderão levar anos e anos. É necessário ter isso em mente.

Uma rápida pesquisada no Google nos fará ver que a área das artes, especialmente para quem desenha, é ampla. Para quem gosta, chega a dar um nó na cabeça ao tentar escolher por qual caminho seguir. Então, não caiamos na lorota de que "não existe mercado de trabalho na área das artes". Pode ser difícil se inserir no mercado {mas para quem não é?}, porém, existe sim.

Se colocar em uma carreira depende só do meu trabalho? Não! Depende de uma série de fatores: da qualidade do nosso trabalho, dos nossos contatos, de estar no lugar certo na hora certa. Diria que mais do último do que qualquer outro.

Hoje, quando buscamos iniciar uma carreira, temos a tendência de olhar mais para a qualificação em títulos ao invés do que realmente importa: o trabalho vai servir ou não?

O que quero dizer é: se qualificar é de extrema importância, mas isso não é garantia de que você se tornará um bom profissional e nem o profissional necessário para aquele serviço. Muitas vezes é uma questão de alguém te indicar porque gostou do seu trabalho ao invés de porque você se formou em Harvard. Tive um professor formado em Harvard - nunca aprendi nada com ele. Ele com certeza era inteligente e excelente profissional da área de ensino dele, mas não era bom professor...

Algo super importante/essencial que não vejo muitos falarem sobre: ter contatos! Podendo frequentar lugares com outros artistas, expor nosso trabalho, etc. Façamos! A faculdade ajuda nesse quesito também, com projetos e nossos próprios colegas. Não tem essa de que "artista é introvertido e trabalha sozinho". Precisamos socializar e muito!!! Conhecer pessoas, empresas, locais, é essencial. Ter cara de pau também ajuda. Aprender a oferecer nosso trabalho. Isso não é uma ofensa às pessoas nem motivo de vergonha. "Você precisa de alguém pra fotografar/filmar seu evento? Pra fazer as artes do seu perfil?" Nesse caso, as redes sociais são nossas aliadas.

Agora, não vamos pensar que iremos abrir uma loja para vender artes e em dois dias teremos rios de clientes. Não é assim que funciona, e é por isso que muitas pessoas acabam desanimando de seguir carreira artística. Como mencionei no início, talvez demore anos para "fazermos um nome" e termos clientes fiéis ou propostas de empregos que nos sustentem. Precisamos saber e estar preparados para isso.

Morar numa cidade de interior, ao contrário do que muita gente pensa, pode ser uma vantagem! Terão bem menos pessoas fazendo o que você faz, as chances de se destacar são maiores. Mas lembrem-se: quem não é visto não é lembrado.

Agora, é difícil, sim. Terão obstáculos, sim. E na maioria das vezes será você contra você mesmo. Mas não é impossível, depende de quanto estaremos dispostos e o quanto o universo estará ao nosso favor, uma vez que essas variáveis {clientes, algoritmos, propagandas} não estão no nosso controle. Mas não deixemos de tentar, se é realmente o que queremos, mesmo que inicie como um projeto paralelo ao seu atual trabalho.

Lembrem-se: são poucas as pessoas que fazem a mesma coisa a vida inteira. Você pode começar com uma loja, migrar para dar aulas, oferecer cursos, fazer ilustração freelancer ou contratado por empresa, tudo isso numa vida só, e às vezes ao mesmo tempo, se for o necessário para tirar um sustento!

Pesquise bem o caminho que você gostaria de seguir, tenha mais planos seguros do que incertos, entenda qual das dificuldades seria a menos desconfortável ou a mais "aceitável" e siga em frente.
