August Plant Care Guide: Tips for Roses, Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers, and Sunflowers
Tumblr media
Roses:
Deadhead faded blooms regularly to encourage new growth and continuous flowering.
Water deeply and regularly, especially during hot spells, to keep the roots hydrated.
Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Check for signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures to protect your roses.
Tomatoes:
Water consistently to keep the soil evenly moist and prevent cracking or blossom-end rot.
Provide support for the tomato plants with stakes or cages to prevent sprawling.
Remove suckers to direct the plant's energy into fruit production.
Monitor for pests like tomato hornworms and use organic pest control if needed.
Peppers:
Water regularly to prevent wilting and ensure even fruit development.
Apply a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and fruit production.
Check for signs of pepper plant diseases, such as wilting or leaf spots, and take appropriate action.
Harvest peppers when they reach their desired size and color for the best flavor.
Cucumbers:
Provide support for the cucumber vines to climb and save space in the garden.
Water deeply to prevent bitterness and promote juicy, crisp cucumbers.
Harvest cucumbers regularly when they are young and tender to encourage more production.
Check for cucumber beetle infestations and use organic methods to control them.
Sunflowers:
Water sunflowers deeply during dry spells to support their tall growth.
Deadhead spent blooms to promote continuous flowering and prevent seed development.
Stake tall sunflowers to protect them from wind damage.
Look out for pests like aphids and spider mites and use natural remedies if necessary.
Happy gardening in August! 🌼🍅🌶️🥒

My shishi odoshi proto type. It works in principal I,e when I test it with water using a hose pipe. Fiddly to get the balance just right to automatically tip and pour. May have to glue some tiny weights to make it perfect. Now need some 5cm bamboo and a little sola powered water pump and some small pipe. #japanese #shishi-odoshi #japanesefountain #gardenhacks #freegardening #gardeningfree #growyourownfood #growingyourownfood #lockdownlife #lockdownprojects #lockdownlife https://www.instagram.com/p/B_pOFYwIMGZ/?igshid=b53nu5qvu3j2

Little bunny, quiet,
Little bunny, wait,
Don't you hear the snap of twigs
Just beyond the gate?
Little bunny, hurry,
Little bunny, run,
You've strayed too far beyond the gate,
The hunting has begun.
Another well known rhyme (though one sang more often by children than adults during a game with a similar namesake) summarizes the tale of Bunny Blue.
Bunny Blue was said to reside in the fictional land Freegarden, meant to represent the land of Fielglenn. Curious and inquisitive, he spends his days staring at the gate that hasn't opened since before his birth. The elder rabbits tell him to focus his attention on Freegarden, and the friends and family who reside there, but his heart and mind often wander beyond the confines of his home.
Knowing that he would be reprimanded for attempting to open the gate, he devised a plan. He would walk by twice a day, in the morning and night, and "accidentally" bump the gate ever so slightly. In a few short days, the gate was cracked open almost enough for Bunny Blue to fit through.
On the last night, Bunny Blue nudged the gate enough to make room for him. Excited, he squeezed through the hole.
Darkness, dirt, and silence greeted him on the other side. He shivered and pushed on, each step away from safety growing less self-assured. After five steps, he was overcome with anxiety and turned to flee back home.
He heard the snap of a twig.
Bunny Blue paused before bolting for the door, but the large cat was too close behind. Bunny Blue managed to crash into the gate, nudging it shut with barely a sound, before he was swiped up and eaten by the wise predator just beyond the safety of home.
Children in Fielglenn have adapted a game called "Run Bunny Blue" from the fairytale. A "Freegarden" is designated, and one child is named the Cat while the others are Bunnies. The "Bunnies" take turn being Bunny Blue. The Cat will hide, and can leap out and tag Bunny Blue if he takes more than five steps from Freegarden. If tagged, Bunny Blue becomes the new Cat. The Cats win when all the Bunnies are gone, and the Bunnies win if all Bunnies still inside Freegarden have went outside the gate and come back without getting tagged.

#Salsagram and farm report! A dark edition today, lots of green tomato windfalls from the Big Beef monster and plenty of tomatillos. That plus the purslane cubes and (store-bought) paprika powder made the results a brick red. But it was very bright and citrusy, as one would expect a from a purslane/tomatillo/green tomato mix. I consolidated some of the containers, removing the four tomatoes that had succumbed to the heat and overwatering. I left the Stump Tomato and Big Pink, as both have new growth that looks promising. A couple of overview images for you, with bonus Garden Helper. Speaking of monster tomatoes, the behavior of the Big Beef and Cinder Block Volunteer plants makes me think I’d have more monsters if I just had more dirt. Both of the aforementioned plants are rooted in two very small circles of actual soil over by the fence, which seems to make a big difference. Probably better drainage, basically. Evidently the Big Beef has attracted something that can reach about two feet up and likes to nibble on red tomatoes through the chain link fence. Rat? Rabbit? Raccoon? Skunk? It’s disappointing but we’ve only lost maybe five fruits and the remaining tomatoes may be too high to reach. Finally, my EarthMachine composter went through catastrophic failure three weeks ago; the plastic started cracking in multiple places and the two-part construction basically fell apart. That’s five and a half years of use and sun exposure, so I guess that’s pretty good. I found a one-piece FreeGarden unit, used my soil prep tub to stage the existing compost, and now everything is nicely mixed and all ready for fallen leaves in October. In other news, pork bellies are up, hard red wheat futures are steady, pasture sorghum is on a slight decline, and field corn is overperforming. https://www.instagram.com/p/CiFyv8cs-Sx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The global household composters market is expected to grow by USD 329.38 million as per Technavio. This marks a significant market slowdown compared to the 2019 growth estimates due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020. The market is driven by the demand for supply chain management of household waste. In addition, the growing awareness of the importance of organic waste recycling and organic farming is anticipated to boost the growth of the household composters market.
The collection and processing of solid waste generated from homes involve landfilling, transportation, labor, and other costs. This increases the burden on municipalities. However, the incorporation of household composters can reduce this burden by generating compost through recycling of recurring waste. This compost can be used for gardening. As a result, home composting proves to be a cost-effective and convenient waste management option. This is encouraging governments and municipalities around the world to undertake public outreach programs and education programs to encourage consumers to use composters. The adoption of this effective supply chain management practice is propelling the sale of household composters. Thus, the need for effective supply chain management of household waste is expected to drive market growth during the forecast period.

My veggie garden always seems to have flowers in it. This year I let everything go to seed. Now I have free seedlings popping up everywhere. It makes for a free, unorganised garden but I like it. Also the garden beds are in use longer as it takes an extra couple of months for the plants to go to seed and then dry. Oh well, it is all an experiment. I hope the garden feeds me eventually #medicalmedium #organicgardening #seeds #growingfromseed #selfsown #freegardening #ediblegarden #vegetablegarden #growveggies

Planting Summer Squash
Tumblr media
Summer squash (yellow crookneck or zucchini) is a tender vegetable that requires careful timing for planting. Start seeds indoors 4 weeks before planting outside, after the last frost.
For bush-type squash, use three plants to create a bush. Harden off seedlings before transplanting, and only plant them after all frost danger has passed and the soil is warm (60oF to 65oF).
Fall planting is possible for a late harvest. Disease prevention involves using organic fungicides and beneficial fungi and bacteria. Harvesting typically occurs 85 to 100 days after starting seeds, and seeds can be saved for up to 6 years.
Happy gardening! 🌱🍅
