Upside of Being a Soloist

Single means solo or being alone. Being single is like being independent, means you’re not relying on others. Being independent is just like self-governing. A choice to live independent depends on our own perception in life. Here is a story of a woman who is carefree living single and independent. She proved that a man is not a need to be happy. And that, this woman can exist without partner in life.

With the upbringing of her parents, Juliet Borres, a professor of Bicol University, chose her career and be independent over her personal happiness. Since Juliet was little, her parents would often tell them that they must strive harder, they must finish their studies and later look for a stable job because nobody will provide it for them except themselves. She kept in mind what her parents would always say---at the end of the day, the only person you can depend on is yourself. These words have a significant impact on Juliet. Embracing those kinds of values from childhood to adulthood, these are the factors that toured her into becoming a more independent and self reliant woman. Being an independent one means, “Probably you don’t depend on anyone. You’re empowered. You take decisions without having to rely on anyone. Being independent and at the same time strong, you charter your own life. No one’s telling you, what to do, where to go. You’re the one’s deciding with all the decisions you made,” she quoted. Every woman, not only a woman but every person has weakness. In Juliet’s case, she’s able to project that she is strong to the people around her because of the things that she accomplished, her career now and the life she is living right now. But before getting into her life now, just like any other woman she has also entered relationship. During her younger years she has been in a sincere relationship too, but that relationship didn’t really work; she focused on her career together with the thought that probably marriage is not just meant for her. Behind her accomplishments, she does have disappointments that she did not do during her younger years. “Looking back at what I have gone through and accomplish I don’t think that I have any regrets. Probably I could have considered marriage before. But I could not really claim it as regrets because I could not also tell that in my younger years I did not consider marrying,” Juliet said. Now that she’s already in her 40’s and still single, the thought of settling down and having her own family is no longer a thing that pressures her unlike before. She’s no longer worrying about getting married. If she decides to get married, then that would be her decision. But at the same time, she’s not closing her doors. If only she will be able to find one good reason to get into that chapter, she will grab that opportunity. If her life is the will of God, she will accept it with all her heart. The next thing is her message about her, being single; Is she happy? “We do all have our own time zone. There are those who become very rich at a very young age, but they die very young as well. There are those who got the peak of their career later part and still live longer. Life is what we make it. In making choices and making decisions in our life it is us making decisions. Not because we want to follow someone else, not because I want to do the same because I’ve seen these working effective with respect to somebody else. We are the one making our choices. We have all our stories. We have all our journey in this life that journey is unique to everyone of us. Mine is a different story, yours is a different story. We charter our own life, our own destiny,” she ended.

I know it's only been a week since I came out but honestly I feel so much happier and free. Not that I was unhappy before, I got out of my dark period several years ago. I obviously felt a little discontent because I didn't feel like I could be me but now I feel so free and happy. Since coming out, I wake up every day in a good mood and it stays like that the whole day. My favorite part about coming out is feeling even closer to my family now, especially my mom.
