On December 6, Donald Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel. Since the establishment of Israel, none of the countries called Jerusalem the capital of Israel, and rightfully so, as a Holy City to all three semitic religions, Jerusalem should not belong to one religion. You might be saying to yourself now, “Israel isn’t a religion, it’s a nation.” To which I would reply, No. Ever since Christianity was made, Jews have been persecuted everywhere for their beliefs. They weren’t allowed to live in certain countries and ironically, the Ottoman Empire, which is predominantly muslim, were the ones who took in the Jews for asylum. After World War II, Jews began fighting for their “country” which happened to be in Palestine. However, no one is stopping the Jews from living in a different country. Israel is literally all Jews and every other country in the world is not like that, which is why it makes it wrong for the Jews to claim Palestine as theirs, when the Palestinians already occupied that area. This movement is known as Zionism and its goal is to reclaim the land that was never theirs. No one can just come over to an area and say that it’s their land because it is. That makes no sense, but that’s exactly what the zionists did when they began fighting the Palestinians. Ultimately, Israel was founded in 1948, and that land should have been enough for them, seeing all the damage they caused to Palestine. Now, Jerusalem, who belongs to no one, is being given to Israel. This is an injustice we should all be arguing and fighting for no matter your religious or ethnic background because of one unwritten rule that everyone considers common sense; you can’t take what’s not yours. And for Donald Trump to just write off Jerusalem as Israel’s because it brought us “no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians” is ridiculous because this move of capitals is bringing farther than ever before. It’s not fair that Donald Trump is the only one who makes the decision about moving Jerusalem. He is not the supreme leader of the world. The right thing to do is delegate between the United Nations or even Palestine who withstanded all of this injustice. There is a line from an article from The Nation that really stuck with me and really illustrated the evil that is occurring on the Israelites behalf: “The Israeli military keeps pushing—into the village, into the yard, into the house, beneath the flesh and into the skulls and tissue and bones of her family and her friends—and Ahed ends up out in front, where everyone can see her.” If you guys don’t know who Ahed Tamimi is, she is a 16 year old girl who recently got arrested after she slapped a soldier. And overnight a video of her went viral, making her a symbol of resistance in this growing generation of questioning whatever is being forced down your throat and clapping back at anything you don’t appreciate or agree with. These notion date all the way back to the Enlightenment and John Locke’s ideas. It’s crazy to think they all weren’t implemented until the 21st century. Better late than never. -s
