Beating the Heat while Fat: A Summer Survival Guide
Summer is (almost) here and it’s going to be hotter than ever. If you’re fat (like me), you know how much hot weather sucks. Specifically, we get to deal with fun issues like underboob sweat, chub rub, skin fold sunburn, and more. And while I like to take a body neutral approach to everything, this can be hard in summer thanks to exclusion and neglect.
The thing is that not a lot of people really... talk about these things, though, because that would interfere with our image of summer. Not a lot of companies are marketing their stuff as a solution to fat people’s problems, because that would be acknowledging that fat people might actually want to go outside during summer.
Having been fat for many a summer now, I want to share some of my resources for enjoying summer! These are all based on personal recommendations and things I have directly experienced. Please feel free to reblog and add on with your experiences and recommendations!
However, if your commentary is even remotely fatphobic, you will be blocked and your comments will be deleted. This post is not for you, and nobody is actually interested in what you have to say!
Back and Underboob Sweat
Two words: Gold Bond. Gold Bond fixes this. It comes in powder, stick, and spray form. I’ve used the powder in shoes, but not on my body. They’ve recently released an invisible form of the spray, which I’m very excited about.
Spray this under your breast tissue or other skin folds, or on flat areas of skin like your lower back that tend to sweat. Some of their powders have aloe in them, which is delightfully soothing for the skin.
Make sure that if you’re sensitive to scent, you buy one of the unscented versions. The “fresh” scent is nice, but it is a scent!
When you’re using this type of spray, do it clean but dry. Don’t do it right after a shower- give your skin a chance to dry off. Lift your breast or skin fold, spray underneath, and then hold it for a couple of seconds to let the spray dry down.
You can also use other types of powder, like body powder or baby powder. There’s mixed evidence about talc-containing powder and its link to cancer, but some people do find talcum powder more irritating than talc-free powder, so whether or not you use this is up to you.
Do keep in mind that this is NOT sunscreen! Apply your sunscreen first for areas of exposed skin.
Chub Rub
Dealing with the tops of your thighs rubbing together is extremely unfun. There are a couple of ways I like to deal with this!
Slip Shorts
I actually reviewed a bunch of these a few years ago. Slip shorts or bike shorts are perfect for wearing under dresses or loose-fitting rompers as a way to stop your thighs from rubbing. As a bonus, if you’re using bike shorts, sometimes they come with extra pockets to stash stuff in.
Friction Sticks
If you’re wearing a swimsuit and don’t want to wear shorts, or just don’t want to wear shorts, period, then a friction stick is another good way to avoid chub rub! I have a couple, Bodyglide and Gold Bond.
If you’re buying Bodyglide, they have one that’s just as good, Bodyglide Outdoor, that is sometimes cheaper. There’s a Bodyglide “For Her” which I’ve never tried, but that’s usually more expensive and let’s be real, do you really need to moisturize your inner thighs? I think not!
There’s also creams you can use but I find those messy and less effective than the sticks. You might like them, though! Experiment with products to find the one(s) that work for you.
Friction sticks can also stop foot blisters. Rub a little on your heel, toe, or wherever you get hot spots.
Dealing With Sweat
I sweat, you sweat, we all sweat. Humans were meant to sweat. Sweating’s a good thing. But that doesn’t mean it’s fun, and frankly I hate being sweaty. Typically, fat people sweat more than thin people, for several reasons related to the way we thermoregulate.
Fortunately, there are lots of ways to make summer sweating less annoying. I’ve written about this before, so you can check out that post for some of my favorite tips for dealing with sweat. Here’s some of the highlights.
Evaporative Cooling
A bandanna or other wrap filled with water crystals can do AMAZING things. You can make this yourself really easily- if you can’t find water crystals, you can just use Orbeez. They sell little 99 cent packs of those in the checkout lines at some stores and at the dollar store, and you can make several cooling wraps with one packet.
You can also get evaporative cooling towels, like Frogg Toggs. I don’t like those as much because they tend to start smelling a little funny, but they’re great for larger area coverage.
Using these will help cool you down and will do the same thing that sweat does– without being sticky.
Hair
If you have long hair, get it off the back of your neck. I used to put it up in a bun with a bun former, but now I just use claw clips. They’re cuter and easier! Seriously, this will help you so much. Get the hair up and away from your skin, you’ll feel so much better.
Hand Fans
I always have a hand fan with me, but not one of the little battery operated ones. I’ve tried a lot of those! I even took one up a mountain once, and it was the only reason I survived. But they never provide the same level of breeze that my folding fan does.
I use this one because it’s cute, and you can get cute ones for a couple bucks on Amazon. I do prefer fabric to the stiff paper ones, just because they’re a bit more durable- I’ve had mine for years now. It’s good.
I’m also not a huge fan of those fans that go around your neck, but I’ve seen many people enjoying them. If they work for you, great!
Hydration and Electrolytes
Carry water with you when you go places, and if you’re gonna be out for a while doing anything strenuous, take some electrolyte tablets with you. I like Nuun because I think they taste good, but there’s lots of brands out there.
There’s no one mineral called electrolyte, just so you know. Electrolytes are a group of minerals that includes sodium, potassium, and chloride as the primary (or significant) electrolytes. Electrolytes are important because they have a natural positive or negative electrical charge when dissolved in water. This electricity is how your nerves transmit information and how your cells make your muscles contract, so low levels of electrolytes can cause some serious issues. Different electrolyte imbalances have different symptoms, but common symptoms include nausea, fatigue, confusion, tremors, muscle spasms (cramps), and dizziness.
If you’re feeling those as you’re moving around outside, get somewhere cool, drink some water, and either eat some food or add electrolyte tablets to your water. This will help stabilize you quickly!
Skin Fold Sunburn Prevention
Everybody should wear sunscreen, period. End of story.
But if you’re applying sunscreen by yourself and you have skin folds, it can be a pain to reach them! This is especially true for any folds that form on your upper back or around your upper arm.
These areas can burn and be very painful, especially if you’re in swimwear or a sleeveless top. It’s also VERY easy to forget that these areas need sunscreen!
If you don’t want or don’t have someone to help you apply those areas you can’t reach, spray sunscreen can be a way to get those areas. If you don’t like the spray or want heavier coverage with a cream, then use a lotion applicator!
If the stick style doesn’t work for you (like if you have shoulder mobility issues), the strap style asks for a different range of motion. If you can’t find one that works for you at a big box store, look at a pharmacy. These are often sold as disability aids or for elderly people with a reduced range of motion.
But honestly, one of the most important things about this is just knowing your body. Know where your skin folds are and think about how they move as you’re applying sunscreen. Get underneath them- as you move, those areas can be exposed to the sun, too.
So yeah, that’s my best advice for beating the heat while fat. If you’ve got other tips, feel free to share them!

A Beginner's Guide: Exploring the Basics of Witchcraft
Are you intrigued by the mystical world of witchcraft and eager to begin your magical journey? Whether you're drawn to the art of spellcasting, divination, or connecting with nature's energies, the basics of witchcraft provide a solid foundation for your exploration. Here's a beginner's guide to help you embark on this enchanting path:
1. Understanding Witchcraft:
Witchcraft is a spiritual practice that encompasses a diverse range of traditions, each with its own beliefs and practices. It is fundamentally about harnessing personal power, connecting with nature, and creating positive change.
2. Embracing Your Path:
Witchcraft is highly personal, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Explore different traditions, read books, and listen to your intuition to discover what resonates with you. Your journey is uniquely yours.
3. The Power of Intention:
At the heart of witchcraft is intention. Your thoughts and feelings shape the energy you put into the universe. Clarify your goals, visualize your desires, and set clear intentions for your magical work.
4. Working with Energy:
We believe in the existence of energy that flows through everything. Learn to sense and manipulate this energy through practices like grounding, centering, and visualization.
5. Tools of the Craft:
While not mandatory, many witches use tools such as candles, crystals, herbs, and tarot cards to amplify their intentions. Familiarize yourself with these tools and choose the ones that resonate with you. Intention is your most powerful tool.
6. Moon Phases and Timing:
The phases of the moon play a significant role in witchcraft. Learn about the energy associated with each phase (new moon for beginnings, full moon for culmination) and align your magical workings accordingly.
7. Spellcasting Basics:
Spellcasting involves directing energy toward a specific goal. Start with simple spells, focusing on your intentions. Remember, the more aligned your actions are with your intention, the more powerful the spell.
8. Meditation and Visualization:
Cultivate a regular meditation practice to quiet the mind and enhance your ability to visualize. Visualization is a potent tool in spellcasting and energy work. This is so important for overall focus and mental clarity.
9. Protection and Grounding:
Before delving into magical practices, establish protection and grounding techniques. This ensures you are anchored in the present and shielded from unwanted energies.
10. Building an Altar:
An altar serves as a sacred space for your magical work. Personalize it with items that hold significance for you—crystals, candles, symbols, and representations of the elements.
11. Respect for Nature:
Witches often have a deep connection with nature. Spend time outdoors, observe the changing seasons, and incorporate natural elements into your practice.
12. Research and Learning:
Knowledge is a cornerstone of witchcraft. Read books, join online communities, and attend local events to expand your understanding of different traditions, rituals, and practices.
13. Ethics and Responsibility:
Ethical considerations are crucial in witchcraft. Respect the free will of others and act with responsibility and integrity.
14. Journaling Your Journey:
Keep a magical journal to document your experiences, spells, and reflections. This becomes a valuable resource for tracking your progress and understanding patterns in your magical work.
15. Embrace Your Unique Path:
Witchcraft is an ever-evolving journey. Embrace your uniqueness, trust your intuition, and allow your path to unfold organically. There are no rigid rules—only the ones you choose to follow on your enchanted journey.
Remember, the essence of witchcraft lies in the exploration of the self, the connection with the natural world, and the pursuit of personal growth. May your journey into witchcraft be filled with wonder, discovery, and the magic of self-discovery. 🔮🌙✨
My messages are open for questions and ideas! Happy Witching!

Hi Elle!!! I’m here for the game again!! So excited!!! Thank you for this!! Both are great options
I chose “Home” . This is what I need right now.
My initials are JSG, if money wasn’t an issue I would love to have a big outdoors space at home, a huge terrace where we can eat and spend the early morning and evenings in summer!! Maybe a little pool! Great view of the Forrest and the ocean … *sigh*
My self care routine would be meditation, yoga, journaling, walks in the nature, baths, massages… a slow life…
☺️
Hi Big Sis JSG,
Thank you so much for participating in my Home ask game.
Oooohh having big outdoors meant more space and room to have dinner parties and be a go-to venue for family gatherings, right?
Yes, I definitely agree on the huge terrace and a little pool! OMG I can already imagine the view of the forest and ocean at your dream home!
A part of me isn't shocked that you'd mention any mindfulness activity as part of your self-care; this totally fits you!
So the cards I pulled are: Page of Cups, 4 of Coins, Ace of Swords
Having a fresh perspective on your life right now is something you're encouraged to incorporate into your mindfulness self-care practice based on the first card. What I also heard was learning to be sensitive to your own body's needs is also something you're encouraged to try out. Another thing that's suggested is for you to have a creative outlet and be hopeful about life in general, so that these can help you feel more at home in your body.
The 4 of Coins suggests that you have to practice tracking your finances. It's not much about being stingy or possessive. This is more of making sure you don't feel burdened about the possibility of being financially lacking in some resources. A really specific suggestion is to make sure you have insurance for everything. Also, have multiple sources of passive income. I'm not sure if you remember us talking about this in the past, but you are encouraged to branch out the sources of income. Never skip "saving for a rainy day" because, in this economy, it's better to be prepared.
Finally, in order to feel at home in your own body and life is to put yourself in situations and positions that encourage self-development and personal growth. It seems that stagnancy is your worst enemy, so never stop learning and never be complacent.
I'm called to remind you that you have goals in life that are waiting to be achieved and materialized in the real world. You know what you need to do in order to achieve all of them. And showing up for yourself and your dreams are your way of feeling at home in your body and life.
This concludes the end of your reading. Do let me know how this resonates with you. Feel free to show some support via my Buy Me A Coffee here (This reading is for entertainment purposes only.)

what sort of hobbies does the crows nest have? or if they dont have any, what kind do you think would fit them?
of course they got hobbies! roxy makes her music, bunki does unprofessional journalism and other online endeavors, etsumi tries (and fails, numerous times) to take care of plants up in that lonely hq of the crows nest's, and kiyoe... well... they aren't hobbies if she has to do them or else.
lysander doesn't do anything in his spare time, obviously, but if he did, he'd probably be a big fan of any outdoor activities. anything that requires going outside and being in nature. he'd like fishing probably.
chifuyu legitimately does not have time or resources for them. any free time is spent begging akechi for food. does that count

Backyard Chickens: A Master Post
So you want your own little dinosaurs to eat your table scraps and make breakfast for you in the sunny months. Well! I am here to provide a quick starter to getting your own flock set up - and yes, for urban chickens as well.
Things to consider:
What can you have? Local laws usually dictate how many chickens can be kept per household/acre. Laws can vary by state and city. Look this up first. You can usually keep more bantams (miniature chickens) than their full-size cousins, and with chickens being so social I do recommend bantams for urban/suburban yards.
What weather will they be exposed to? Indoor chickens can generate a lot of dust, but small outdoor coops can be difficult to heat safely. Dual purpose breeds are usually more cold-hardy than layer varieties, and everybody likes fresh water and shade in the heat. Frozen water bottles left outside to thaw can keep birds cool, too.
What will eat them? I have had little losses to foxes, personally, and more to neighborhood dogs. Raccoons are nearly everywhere in North America and will tear open fences to eat your babies. (I would know. I've had to deal with the aftermath.) Rabbit hutches are a good starter for bantams, but a good coop made of wood and a yard made of hardware cloth or dog fence panels (and with netting on top for hawks/owls) will keep out most things. Weasels/mink will fit through gaps bigger than an inch, so be careful of that, too.
What do they need? Chickens love to scratch and forage (and some can fly short distances and modest heights) so if you're letting them on the lawn be prepared for them to eat it - no pesticides on that turf! At night, they prefer to sleep on perches/something with a bit of height to it and do best locked in their coop where other critters can't eat them. A place to nest and lay their eggs in their coop (otherwise they will find their own little secret place, God help you find it) and a place to dust-bathe (like chinchillas) to help keep mites and lice out of their feathers. They'll also need some grit and calcium - crushed oyster shell (or their own eggshells) will help.
Where can I get them? Many farm and feed stores like Tractor Supply Company will sell baby chicks during the spring, but if you're looking for specific bantams or unusual breeds I recommend checking out your State Fair or a Poultry Association show [American version located here] and check it out. They're free admission, generally, and almost every show has people who bring birds to sell. While the demographics tend to slant pretty "red" I have seen plenty of blue hair and pronouns at poultry shows. Facebook can also be a great resource.
How do I get everyone to get along? Chickens are notoriously territorial, with a vicious pecking order that make Mean Girls a documentary. Chickens who are raised from chicks together will get along best, but if you need to add more I would introduce two or more at a time (so the newbies have a friend) and put them in a nearby yard/cage for a few days until everyone has worked out their opinions through the bars of a cage. Some breeds are sweeter than others (buff orpington) and some are.... spicy (Plymouth rocks).
Saro's Personal Breed Recommendations
Dual Purpose (cold weather) - Black Australorps , Buff Orpington, New Hampshire Reds are all generally pretty good natured and calm. The platonic ideal of a chicken.
Layer breeds (warm weather) - Leghorns are the go-to, but I have a soft spot for Hamburg as well. And of course, who wouldn't love a chicken who lays dark brown (Marans) or green/blue (Ameraucauna) eggs?
Bantams - D'Anvers with their little beards are my all time favorite and have the biggest personalities in my experience, but Old English Game (even more zippity) and Black Sumatras (all black, even down to the skin, and shockingly calm in hand) are high on the list as well. And everyone loves the fluffy-faced Silkie or feather footed Cochin.
Hopefully this is enough to get you started! Feel free to send me questions or add on with a couple of your own tips (especially non-US people and those with indoor chickens). I've been raising them for eggs, pets, and for show since 2005, but I am always eager to learn.

Unit 3 Blog Post
Privilege, as defined by Peggy McIntosh, is an "invisible knapsack of unearned assets" that individuals carry with them due to their race, gender, socioeconomic status, and much more. This supports my definition of privilege as someone who has societal advantages which are not earned but are inherently granted by birth. These unearned assets allow individuals to navigate life with relative ease, accessing resources, opportunities, and safety nets that others do not have the luxury of having. Recognizing privilege is crucial for environmental interpreters who connect diverse audiences to nature. Understanding how privilege affects interpreters and their audiences can influence how to approach engagement and storytelling.
In natural interpretation, privilege manifests in several ways, one way being through access to natural spaces. People from privileged backgrounds often have more frequent and easier access to parks, wilderness areas, and outdoor education programs. This access is influenced by many factors such as wealth and free time – factors which privileged people have. Those who can access such environmental spaces have more opportunities to build relationships with nature. In contrast, marginalized groups such as people of color or those from lower-income communities, may face significant barriers to accessing nature. These barriers can include a lack of transportation, money for entry and the feeling of not belonging in predominantly white outdoor spaces. As a result, interpreters from privileged backgrounds may assume a level of comfort or familiarity with nature that not all audiences share.
Additionally, privilege also shapes the environmental narratives that are told. Nature is presented reflects the dominant culture’s values, emphasizing certain landscapes or ecosystems as more valuable or “worthy” of protection. These narratives can unintentionally exclude or downplay the significance of other cultures’ relationships with the land. The historical exclusion of marginalized communities from certain outdoor spaces and the culture of the land may be overlooked by those who didn’t experience these struggles. Recognizing this privilege allows interpreters to incorporate a wider range of voices and stories into their programs, making them more inclusive and representative of diverse experiences.
Recognizing privilege allows interpreters to approach their work with greater inclusivity. Rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all approach, interpreters must take the time to understand their audience’s diverse backgrounds, motivations, and values. Looking within, interpreters must also recognize their privileges. Acknowledging that not all audiences share the same experiences as themselves can lead to more thoughtful program development. This means learning whether their visitors are locals or tourists, young or old, and all the cultural, economic, and social factors that shape each visitor’s relationship to nature. By doing so, interpreters can create programs that resonate more deeply and offer personalized opportunities to connect with nature.
Privilege plays a significant role in shaping education and interpretation of messages of nature. Interpreters can create more inclusive, engaging, and impactful programs by acknowledging and addressing privilege. They can help to inspire diverse audiences to care about and protect the natural world. They can reach more people and bring them tighter through nature. They can become improved nature interpreters.

Staying Fit Without Going to the Gym
Hey Fit Fam,
Welcome to this week’s edition of the LiveForeverFitness Newsletter! Today, we’re diving into a hot topic: how to stay fit without ever setting foot in a gym. Whether you’re juggling a busy schedule, tight on cash, or just prefer to work out at home, I’ve got some simple and effective ways to keep you active and in shape, no matter where you are.
1. Bodyweight Workouts Are Your Best Friend
You don’t need fancy equipment to get results. Push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks are all you need to strengthen and tone your body. Try this simple circuit:
10 push-ups
15 squats
20 lunges
30-second plank Repeat 3-4 times for a full-body workout!
2. Get Creative with Everyday Items
No dumbbells? No problem! Use what you have around the house:
Canned goods as weights for bicep curls or shoulder presses.
A chair for tricep dips.
A backpack filled with books for added resistance during squats and lunges.
3. Take Your Fitness Outdoors
Nature is the ultimate gym. Go for a run, hike, or bike ride, and incorporate activities like jumping rope or playing basketball. Parks are great places to add incline push-ups or step-ups using benches.
4. Incorporate Flexibility and Mobility
Stretching and mobility work are key to long-term fitness. Try incorporating yoga or Pilates into your routine for improved flexibility, strength, and stress relief. If you’re new to yoga, there are plenty of free online resources to get started. Plus, in our next newsletter, I’ll dive deeper into how we can encourage more men to join in on the benefits of yoga.
5. Consistency is Key
Without the structure of a gym, it can be tough to stay motivated. Set small, daily goals like a 30-minute workout or hitting a step count. Find something you enjoy—whether it’s dancing or an online fitness challenge—to keep it fun and engaging!
Stay Connected That’s all for today’s newsletter! Remember, you don’t need a gym to stay fit—you just need the determination and a bit of creativity. If you found this helpful, share it with a friend, and don’t forget to follow us on social media for more tips and inspiration.
Until next time, stay active, stay consistent, and Live Forever Fit!

Can you run through the basics of 1870s men's fashion (circa 1875)? I know nothing about men's fashion and I need my character to be Plausible™
A great resource for a quick overview of 19th century fashion is the State University of New York Fashion Institute of Technology and their decade-by-decade fashion timelines: here's 1870-1879. It's legitimate and scholarly with sources cited so you can follow up on any claims and learn more about anything of interest!
I love Handbook of English Costume in the 19th Century by pioneering dress historians Phillis Cunnington and C. Willett Cunnington, which is also on Internet Archive (free account needed to access it). The FIT timeline notes that 1870s menswear is "marked by sobriety and understated style," and the Cunningtons add some additional context that the collapse of the French Empire after the Franco-Prussian War "produced a revulsion in France of anything savouring of 'Empire' style" which contributed to overall more subdued men's fashion.
Some other men's 1870s details from Handbook of English Costume in the 19th Century: trousers are all fly front and without a waistband, evening dress is generally black, and the "general absence of thin materials and light-weight cashmeres was characteristic of this warmly-clad buttoned-up decade." Dressing gowns with "fancy patterns and girdles of Berlin wool-work [a type of embroidery]". Men's jewellery less conspicuous and consisting only of "the heavy gold watch-chain across the waistcoat, the tie pin, and the signet-ring on the finger."
The difference between A, 1878 morning coat with Prussian collar, and B, an 1870 morning coat, shows the closer fit over the course of the decade. B looks very 1860s.
I think it's important to keep in mind that even the more somber, subdued menswear of the 1870s (especially compared to the 1820s-1840s) is still not as dark and boring as modern menswear.
Here's a fashion plate dated 1876 in the Met Collection. The gentleman at left is in riding dress with spurred topboots that wouldn't look out of place in 1830. Which brings me to another important point: throughout the 19th century, (middle class and upper class) men have Special Outfits for different occasions and activities. A man circa 1875 would want to have different outfits for participating in various sports, hunting, evening parties, daytime business wear, etc.
Two outdoorsy looks of 1876: yachting costume (A), and Norfolk jacket (B) "suitable for any kind of outdoor exercise."
A is a "business suit for all occasions" from 1873, and B is a frock coat of 1874.
Facial hair facial hair facial hair in all these looks, and men are still wearing plaids/checks! (Plaid: perhaps the most characteristic trait of all 19th century men's clothing). The Cunningtons quote the West End Gazette of Fashion from 1876 that "Our fast young men will find something to be noisy in, in the shape of loud plaids, the patterns more striking than tasteful."

Howdy! My name is Six, I am a lowly college student who way back when during the Don't Go Outside Years wanted a group to play Minecraft with and ended up asking to join Untitled! Here I am now, and the rest is history.
- / - / -
What's your favorite block in Minecraft?
Oh god, just one? Incapable of that sort of decision. Dark prismarine, deepslate tile, crying obsidian to name a few.
What is your favorite Minecraft mob?
Hostile would be skeleton, passive is parrot with snow fox in close second!
What is your unpopular Minecraft opinion?
Achievement hunting is fun! Its one of my favorite aspects of late game in any game.
What underrated aspect of Minecraft is your favorite?
The ambient noise in the End and the Nether, I get the vibe that a lot of people find it creepy but I love it!
What style of building do you most enjoy working in?
Freestyle usually? Or simple things, like remodeling generated structures. I'm not much of a confident builder, but I just make what I think looks pretty or pleasing or fits a theme I feel like using for the season.
What builds are you the most proud of and why?
For nostalgia my S0 base is close to my heart, but my pride and joy to this day is my S1 base. Located about 5,000 blocks into the nether! We don't talk about how the area my nether portal connects to looked like (spoiler- it's a mess).
What is the most challenging part of the game to you?
Probably redstone? Like a lot of people I just do not get it. I enjoy most aspects like early game, exploring, collecting resources, making farms, etc. I also struggle a bit with late game and what I want to do, after my to-do list is empty.
What's a weird fact people might not know about you?
I played Animal Jam for several years of my formative life and there used to be a few YouTube videos I was in back in the day, which are now sadly lost to time (shoutout if you remember WhiteWolf4444, thats me lol).
What do you enjoy outside of Untitled and Minecraft?
Many things!!!! I like to draw, and play a few other video games in my free time. I'm a long time fan of FNAF, Undertale, Subnautica, and a few others I'm definitely forgetting. I also spend a lot of time outdoors (I'm a Natural Resource Science major).

Does Marie go out camping by her own often?
@riftofthestars
YES. The only person who will know her location/the region she will be in is Trish. Just in case anything should happen and Marie doesn't check back in within the designated time, Trish has permission to go ahead and alert the family and whoever she sees fit.
But camping in the middle of nowhere is something Marie does because it makes her feel at ease - away from watchful eyes. If she could live in the middle of nowhere again, she would. Camping out and all that comes with it is a nice distraction. It's a lot of activity; from chopping firewood to foraging to fishing, hunting or other means of collecting food and resources. It allows her time to think but minimizes how much obsessing she does over the cult hunt. Freeing her from drowning in her leads or reaching out to network in favor of other tasks.
It doesn't matter the season, the place. Forests are her favorite and she'll escape into one for however long. Sometimes it's a weekend, other times she has disappeared for a month. Marie is incredibly competent when it comes to survival and camping - she grew up in a very rural port town and it was sort of a staple to learn these things - both because of and not because of the cult that once was there.
If anyone is ever critical of her competence in other areas, given her temperament and behavior - they'll find that in this area she excels. Sure, she uses questionable methods in her journalism but she won't put her life or anyone else's life at risk when it comes to the great outdoors. Despite how potentially scary it can be, Marie thrives being left alone in nature - in the middle of the unknown to just breathe.
It's also the only time she doesn't feel as burdened as to use her rope and will spend at least half the time without it.
#lolol marie's comforts not just due to her growing up but also has some influence from the leviathan's preferences#headcanons#asks#riftofthestars

The UK has community centres and you're pretty much spot on for how we use them. You can hire them for evening classes, fitness and martial arts clubs, football (soccer), athletics, family reunions, birthday and engagement parties, knitting groups, parent-and-baby groups, jumble sales (what do you call these? They're like a community garage sale), addiction groups, fundraising events, scout clubs...
They're administered by parish councils (the smallest unit of local government) and funded through a mix of local taxes and private hire; anyone who wants to run a club or an event can rent the hall, so some of these events do have a charge but it's often quite small and may be negotiable with the event leader (my martial arts group used to be 50p-£1, but that my also have covered the insurance).
Community centres in all the villages I've lived in also have a playing field attached, which is free to use, with goalposts for playing soccer and basketball/netball/tennis courts, and a children's play area nearby. Some have outdoor gyms or callisthenics workout areas, too
They're a great community resource, up there with local libraries, and you should definitely push your local government to set one up if you can
You know what I feel we need more of?
Community centers.
Specifically, places where people can gather, have fun, host events or even just hang out. Similar to what libraries are, but not quite--a place where kids can be loud and rowdy and hang out, make friends, practice sports. Though they definitely should still have quiet areas, maybe craft rooms too. A nice place to go to and hang out after school before you're ready to head home--or a safe place to stay if you don't want to head home. Community centers could also still be fantastic for adults too--they could be used as a place to host classes on different crafts, or repairs, etc.--and still be a perfectly valid place to hang out and seek refuge.
Places like these do exist in many places in a few different forms, but a lot of them are directly tied to organizations and groups that may make people more hesitant to partake in them (ie churches, Police Athletic Leagues), or they have a cost barrier to taking part of the amenities (YMCA). While these places are definitely suitable and fulfilling for many people, they're often limiting and stifling for others--if not just flat-out inaccessible. Not to mention, they don't all fill the roles I mentioned above.
I think having robust community centers would be great for societies all over. I'll admit, my imagination is a bit grand--community gardens, sports rec rooms, swimming pools, reading and craft rooms, a repair cafe, a food cafe, maybe a dorming area for overnight stays, soup kitchens, showers, mutual aid closets and such.
Though I guess that brings about the question of how this would be funded. With churches, it's tithes and other forms of community fundraising. With police athletic leagues, its... taxes, I guess? Alongside other donations. And with the YMCA, it's memberships that provide the funding for their amenities. My initial instinct is to say a mix of taxes and maybe some community contributions would be what funds a good community center, but then there comes the issue of some places having better or worse community centers depending on the median income of their area... especially when you see how places like libraries already get little funding in favor of larger policing budgets (the libraries in my city are all closed on Sundays, and have shorter hours in general, for example)
I know I'm just rambling at this point. I just think community centers are cool! They're punk! And we should have them--cool, fun community centers!
