kanae brainrot apparently
“oh that kanae gender poll is neat haha anyways” the next day comes “oh okay.”
my opinion on kanae is “interesting without the burden of hindsight.” if tg had positive trans rep in mutsuki or big madam kanae would be a very good character with a very compelling arc. unfortunately, tg slaps every trans or ngc character with the “GASP. lying about their gender?!” tag at least once. at least mutsuki kinda gets away with it.
anyways. let’s do some vacuum analysis. under the cut.
kanae’s purpose in the story is heavily related to her perception of his personal gender versus what gender she thinks will better serve her family legacy. As the very last remaining rosewald, she wants to be a man because for one reason or another, she perceives women to be weak. her mother succumbed to illness early on when they fled germany, for example, while her brothers fought unflinchingly to help her escape. She was very young, so these facts made an impression upon her.
of course, no one calls her out on this because no one around her understands. They don’t know what it’s like being alone. They don’t know what it’s like losing everything and wanting nothing more than to get revenge against the ones who think they’re better and stronger. They don’t know. They don’t know her. She wishes they knew her. She wishes they loved her.
Until one day:
Tumblr media
(can i PLEASE take my eyes off this woman for FIVE MINUTES jesus christ)
eto hates two particular things: herself, and people who lie. this is a core character trait of hers and explains the targets of her torture. people who remind her of herself and think of themselves as superior to someone/something else. why?
because she’s been in those very situations, and it worked out for the worst.
eto targets kanae because kanae hates humans on a broad scale (see: how she treats chie), but this is born of fear as only the ccg are the cause of her suffering and the only ones who really care about her dying, and despite having been thrown about by “humans” (again, ccg) and seeing the value non-ccg humans bring to the table (again, chie (bless chie’s heart btw), who is also hunted by the ccg), kanae still despises them and sees them as beneath her.
eto was the same way at one point. she was targeted by V, who took Noroi, her only family at that time, away from her. In her quest for vengeance, she mutilated Kasuka Mado, who, for all intents and purposes, is not a part of V, but an unwitting weapon swung around by them. she presumably does similar things to other investigators out of rage and pain because there’s nothing left for her and she has no support system to reign her in. this is until she meets arima who decides to help her (and even then…).
and eto, more or less, broke free of the mindset kanae is currently in. only thing is: eto also hates herself. she hates how many people have died on her quest for change, how many people will continue to die even when she “wins”. she hates herself as the instigator, but it’s all she knows and all she will continue to do, and she wishes she could just mutilate herself and die and answer for everything she’s done. but that would be a purposeless death. so she turns to a different pastime and breaks out the sewing kit. surely she can “fix” this pitiful caricature of herself while getting the twisted satisfaction of “hurting” herself.
(spoilers: it doesn’t work.)
and you know what they say: as eto, so kaneki.
Tumblr media
neither wants to hurt kanae, not really, but rather they want to hurt the image of themselves that kanae exudes. is it better? no, but it’s an important distinction when factoring in characters.
… this was supposed to be about kanae. please accept my apologies. let’s get back on track.
it’s tragic, isn’t it? the people who have real, genuine, human experiences (eto can eat human food, kaneki was human) are the ones who inflict arguably the most pain on kanae. she continues to be at the mercy of the humans she hates so much. their twisted perceptions of love have infected her and she dies.
and yet she thinks she dies happy.
well those are the morning thoughts while i’m supposed to be on vacation. thanks for reading!

1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 20 and 26 asks, I included question 26 a few minutes ago
Thank you!
1. Who is your favorite character(s)?
I’ve discussed my current ones already but my first favorite characters were Nishiki, Yoriko, Hinami, and the very guy who got me into the whole series, Tsukiyama. So glad they all remained consistent and important parts of the story that were never taken for granted or disregarded by the main characters right.
2. And your favorite ship?
I ship rather like a particular eater. I take bits and pieces of the fine meals you have prepared for yourselves and I congratulate everyone on their tastes! I enjoy them all in moderation so long as they are not illegal. Some more than others. (Utaren, Houtata, Arieto etc.) But will I dine upon those when serving myself, regardless of how appealing I find them? Nay. Should you follow me home and see what I think of, or consume, you will see me over the ship equivalent of a basket of uncooked potatoes covered in whipped cream, (MutsKanae) and a combination of caesar salad dressing and a singular green pepper. (Furutui) Judge me for my choices and I agree but tell me to stop and I will refuse. But it does change frequently so tomorrow who knows. However, it will never be wholly sensical. I thrive on crack pairings. I think I effectively murdered that metaphor.
6. Which character do you find most useless or indifferent to the story?
I want to say every character serves some kind of purpose, but Suzuya’s squad besides Hanbee kind of didn’t really need to be there. Like you could’ve mashed them all into one third character and been none the worse off. That said I don’t mind that they are there and I wouldn’t change it, I just don’t think they need to be.
7. Which character(s) do you dislike? For a time, Ayato. Fun design, annoying kid. But he was already beaten up (and actually learned a lesson from it instead of just contemplating how sad his life is cough cough Kaneki) so I don’t have any remaining qualms.
10. Which character deserved more? Or was it more unfair?
Rize, but I talk more about that in 26. Mutsuki! My son, what did they do to you. He is riddled with transphobic messages but I will ignore them because he is mine now and he cannot be hurt anymore, what do you mean he joined a different branch of the CCG upon its collapse and abandoned his friends he’s healing with them, trust me.
20. If you could trade coffee for anything else to be food for ghouls, what would it be?
Okay assuming we’re still operating under the rule it has to be a one-ingredient thing that can’t be mixed with others without tasting disgusting anyways… I’m going to say straight vanilla extract and look yes I know, tumblr meme but that’s not actually why I said that, can you IMAGINE the awkward workarounds they’d have to figure out to justify it. Anteiku’s a bakery with a suspicious number of vanilla flavored products. Tsukiyama the baker. A human takes a swig of a ghoul’s drink and dies. Beautiful.
26. If you could sacrifice any character to bring another back, who would it be?
I would like to trade in a Kaneki for a Rize. Specifically I want him to drown in the dragon with Nimu while Dragon Rize actually gets revived, autonomy, personality, mental function and all. Changed? Obviously. But free again in a world where she doesn’t have to run from herself. I just want to see her get to be herself without the objectified lens of a man over her to make her some kind of driving force, regret, etc. Or her own actions trying to bury the scared kid she once was through murder and indulgence. She was kind of on a self-destructive warpath from the moment of her escape, and regardless of how her intent was to distance herself from the garden in every way possible, counterintuitively her suppressed fear would’ve ended up with her right back in the garden. Anyways all in all I want a character who Kaneki has not deemed “good” to be given another chance. Kaneki’s fixed world (or world that “just is” according to him) is not a paradise for ghouls and humans alike, it is paradise for Kaneki. I would like an outlier.

Imagine role-playing Moby Dick with Dick and he makes whale sounds when he cums ⚡
this is cursed omg. This is like part 2 of that moby dick ask?? here is the thing lol
big thanks to my pal @tooru-mutsuki-cult-leader for helping me with some quotes from the book ily!
This surely would look prettier on mobile but I like this gif way too much to not use it lol
Tumblr media
"Maybe we should spicy up things a bit!" You caught him shamelessly with that one, knowing Dick soft spot is finding new nasty things to do. Maybe next it time itll be his turn and he'll have you fucking like freak du Soleil.
This is how far is willing to go yet, the things the ex boy wonder has to in order to get laid and has some alone time with the person he loves the most.
The cool breeze of the AC hit his bare skin, the rope in his wrists and ankles were tight enough from preventing him to escape from your touch, and he witnessed in awe how you were basically mocking him.
He didn't knew if loved you that much or if he liked to get his ego sucker punched, maybe he was deploying a thing for self embarrassment? Dick didn't know.
Such a pretty girl had him at his mercy while wearing a damn cheap pirate hat.
"Why the hat?" Dick asked, obviously entertained by your wardrobe of choice, that silly hat and some black lingerie that happened to cover your more intimate parts with a string of clothing. You looked sexy in a pirate-ish type of way though.
"If your gonna be the whale then I'm your captor, duh. I had to dress for the occasion. " Such a razonable answer that Dick couldn't argue against. "So anyway, a beast like you shouldn't talk."
Dick looked at you amused, he didn't knew what to expect from this but he was curious to see you talk weirdly as you used him as some kind of dildo since he couldn't move a single limb.
"We have bussiness to attend, sweetheart, I wanna know if the whale is as shocking as others claim it to be. Since moby dick may be big, but he ain't that big."
Your fingers graced his sides as you left kisses all over his torso. going down agonizingly slowly, and with your teeth and the help of your index and thumbs, you pulled his boxers down, freeing his cock from that cloth trap from the world to see Dick in his naked glory.
Diving in his beauty, you couldn't help but mutter." That ain't no whale, that a great white God..."
"(y/n) you can't be serious right now."
"I didn't memorise the lines of the book for nothing, so suck it up."
Without wasting time you took his dick in your hands and start pump it, slow at first making sure to pay attention to the tip until beads of pre cum came out and you decided to give it a few licks that went from the base to the top.
Dick shut his eyes as he exhaled, hands grabbing the sheets ligtly as you started to suck him more eagarly. He felt in heaven, your mouth sure did things to him, but before Dick could reach his climax you took him out of your mouth.
You climb up the bed the better you can a you keep jacking Dick off, making sure to line up his cock with your hole before pushing him in." Oh my-" you squeal and Dick can't help but left out a breathy moan as he adjusts to your pussy. Hands held you falt on Dick's stomach, rocking back and forth slowly before speeding up.
You ride Dick with eagerness, not caring about anything else but your own greedy pleasure. His moans and grunts were like sweet music to your ears, and the sound of skin clapping was noting but making this even more lustful.
Dick was battling with the ropes, it doesn't matter how many times he had been tied up when the time of watching you enjoy yourself, mouth slighlty open, head threw back as you gave him a full display of your tits- man, he was frustraded to not be able to touch you.
“From hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Ye damned whale" you cried out, walls clenching around Dick. It didn't took long for him to find his own realease, paiting your womb with ropes of thick cum.
What you didn't expected were the poor whale noises that ended up being outshined by his own moans, all of this in a weird mix that make you burst out laughing. You'll never be able to forget that.
"What a nice whale you are, Moby Dick." you cooed Dick, who was laughing as well, and without pulling him out, you reached up to kiss his chest.

What makes Ruggie Bucchi a member of Team Mint?
Tumblr media
*Please read theses before moving on for more context   2 Lines & A Circle : In-depth description on flavors: Mint (tumblr.com)
Some of you might have thought that he actually fitted in some other categories, but I had this thought about whether Ruggie was a top or bottom. Yes I know this was a weird idea, but I realized he just screamed like he was a top not a bottom. Now you’re probably wondering how this relates, well it helped me find his place in team mint. In the wish upon a star event story, Ruggie actually wishes to get a stable job. This was a very realistic wish of him and you know to be realistic is what adds to a mint. Do I rest my case? NO! There’s more!
Tumblr media
*all credit goes to artist: https://twitter.com/DLsmma/status/1274295668853469184
Previously mentioned in my in-depth description of mint, you will notice that a mint will recharge with his lover. This is something I can imagine Ruggie doing towards his lover and it can actually be seen with his love of food. I mean he always seems to be so much happier whenever there is food involved. I rest my case, for now.
Now if you want an otome man who you can drool over like how Ruggie drools over food then look no further than Riku Morimachi from My Last First kiss. Just to be clear, I didn’t like his route but I feel that he is the closest to Ruggie.
Tumblr media
Going back to Riku, yeah I wasn’t so impressed with his route but it was very realistic like Ruggie. Riku’s dog really saved it though. Anyway the route is what I call getting Mutsikun(what I’m referring to :Tsukista - Mutsuki-kun). In which a guy is awesome in someone else’s route but when you get to their own route the guy is not that great. HOWEVER, do not let this fool you, Riku does have great side stories that I definitely recommend you check out!
P.S Here's something of Riku you can check out on youtube: My Last First Kiss Riku: Love's Blissful Trap
Interested in finding out if he’s your match? Then feel free to participate in these events! They won’t end till I’m tired of seeing their beautiful faces!

Okay I've stopped crying long enough to write this.
God I can't believe we finally got the whole story animated. It was a pleasure experiencing this journey with you all, manga readers and anime onlies.
Apparently they are doing the Kyoko backstory...interesting. I wonder if they're going to modernize it somehow (make Katsuya not a grown ass man? Maybe?).
Anyway...Tohru calling the pony 'mini Isuzu-san' will never not be adorable and I love that Kyo corrects her. Kyo just has this random trivia about animals (like the beetles in the beach arc). I wonder if he read like National Geographic magazines or something as a kid since he was sheltered and awkward (no judgement here I did the same thing).
Hana and Uo have such a fun dynamic with Kyo and I love it. You can tell they do actually like him even though they like to troll (which is why I'm thankful they cut out that part of the hospital arc because it was ooc for them).
THE BEAD MONOLOGUE!!! I'm so glad they kept it!!
Okay look not having Komaki in this scene with Yuki just makes Kakeru look even gayer lmao idk I cant explain it. It legit just sounds like a couple talking about their future plans for long distance.
Mine calls Ayame "Aya-kun" now. Upgrade!
I'm glad they kept the Rin breakdown but the placement here is a bit awkward. You've got Momiji and Haru talking about Tohru and then Rin just suddenly bringing up Akito? Idk it was weird and it definitely had more impact when it was Tohru she was talking to, but I'm glad its atleast there.
Momiji, my Pan King 👀 the lack of pronouns is very telling (let me have this)
Tumblr media
I still hate what they did to Ritsu but I always found their friendship with Kagura really heartwarming and judgement free. Just wish we couldve seen more of it.
The Yuki speech to Tohru had me bawling ngl hes come so far and I love that he was finally able to tell her (fun fact! Apparently that was one of the first scenes Takaya-sensei came up with)
We finally get to see Katsuyas face. It's hilarious how they made it a big mystery when hes really not anything remarkable lmao hes just some dude.
KYORU KIDS. IN COLOR. (I understand the anime has made a decision but I've already written them all as carrot tops and I ain't changing it now)
The father of the grandbaby was never named or given a clear face so I can stay in my little Hajime/Mutsuki bubble 😏
I'm so grateful to this anime for existing. Thank you TMS!

Less shipping: top ten platonic m/f friendships.
Oh man… not gonna lie, I’m kinda disappointed that you specified male/female friendship, because there are also a lot of same-gender relationships that I enjoy platonically, but don’t particularly ship. (Hello Sokka and Zuko) However! I think I’ve come up with a pretty good spread for this list.
My qualifications for a paring to appear on this list were simple:
The pairing is not romantic in canon.
I, personally, do not ship them.
The dynamic is not paternal or that of a mentor and mentee. That would get its own list.
Friendships are ranked by no metric other than my personal enjoyment of them. With that out of the way, let’s get started!
10. Sandstorm & Graystripe (Warrior Cats)
Holy childhood flashbacks, batman! I’ll admit that it’s been a long time since I’ve read warriors, but I remember that I really enjoyed it whenever these two interacted. They were Firestar’s most important people, and maybe their character arcs didn’t really involve each other, but damn if they didn’t have some good chemistry.
9. Sam Temple & Diana Ladris (Gone)
Another one from my childhood. Sam and Diana might have initially been presented as a “hero” and Diana a “villain”, but as the series progressed and black and white morality gave way to shades of gray, it became apparent that the situation was more complicated than that. They were just scared kids who made a metric fuckton of mistakes between them. After everything they went through, it was nice to see them find some measure of solace in their friendship with each other.
8. Aang & Toph Bei Fong (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
I don’t really have a deep or moving explanation here. I just really liked them? It might not have been quite as bad as Toph and Katara, but their differences in personalities and moral philosophies made them clash pretty badly at first. However, they also weren’t too dissimilar at their core - two children bound by societal expectations who wished to be free. It was nice seeing them learn to get along.
7. Narancia Ghirga & Trish Una (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind)
Fuck, man. Just fuck me up. All of their little interactions over the course of the series were great, but the thing that really earned them their place on the list? This scene, right here. (Gold Wind spoilers ahoy) Seeing Narancia emphasize with Trish so strongly and go on to fight for her so fiercely, and then seeing how much he clearly meant to her in the end… my heart is in ribbons.
6. Tsukiyama Shuu & Hori Chie | Touka Kirishima & Amon Koutaru (Tokyo Ghoul)
Yes, I’m cheating and doing a tie for number six. My first impulse was to give the slot to Amon and Touka. They’re a pair of characters with a lot of bad blood between them who both let themselves get deeply entrenched in the cycle of revenge. Not only was their conversation a powerful piece of wish-fulfillment moment for me, but actually seeing them bury the hatchet and become something like friends was even better. However, it was only one chapter, and Amon and Akira’s ambiguous ending means that we don’t know if they kept in touch and pursued a friendship or that was it for them.
For that reason, I am also shining the spotlight on Tsukiyama Shuu and Hori Chie. He is a murderous ghoul and picky eater, the infamous gourmet. She is a reckless human photographer, doing whatever it takes to feel alive. Together, they are unapologetic degenerates. Their relationship is actually very sweet and wholesome in :re as well, but this paragraph is reserved for degeneracy. Have you read the Days light novel? If not, buy it, read it, and be amazed.
Note: I did consider using Saiko and Mutsuki, but decided not to because the amount of discourse surrounding Mutsuki while the manga was being published thoroughly prevented me from enjoying his character whatsoever. It wasn't anything to do with the actual content of the manga or how the character was written. He was my least favorite character in the series for a good long while purely because of the fan wank surrounding him, which was incredibly obnoxious and neigh-unavoidable for a time. Although I appreciate and enjoy the character now, it felt dishonest to put Mutsuki and Saiko on the list when I wanted nothing more than for him to disappear from the manga for so long.
On a semi-similar note, I also considered doing Saiko and Urie! However, I decided not to since I do ship Urisai romantically as well.
5. Erza Scarlet & Gray Fullbuster (Fairy Tail)
Like I said in my last list, Fairy Tail didn’t draw me for the plot, but its character dynamics. Although the romantic relationships are my personal highlight, there is no denying that it also has some spectacular platonic dynamics. Gray and Erza are one of them. Erza started the series as intimidating and bold, yet closed-off and reserved when it came to her personal feelings. Gray was one of the only characters who knew that she wasn’t absolutely untouchable. When she first showed up at Fairy Tail, he was intrigued by this ridiculously strong girl and kept pushing her to fight him (and getting absolutely trounced). One day, he went to confront her again, only to find her crying and come to the staggering realization that she is not only just a human being, but a hella traumatized one at that. After that, he swore not to let anything make her cry again. Come the Tower of Heaven arc, he fails, which is what triggers this flashback. Character development saw Erza open up more and Gray’s own list of important people expand, but this particular friendship still holds a special place in my heart. (Erza’s interactions with Gray and Natsu are also just really entertaining in general.)
4. Sasha Braus & Connie Springer (Attack on Titan)
(This segment contains spoilers for the final season of Attack on Titan)
Sasha and Connie's interactions were always a delight in this series. For a long time, I wasn't sure if I preferred them as a platonic or romantic couple, so I was surprised by how relieved I was when Isayama gave Sasha a different love interest and allowed her relationship with Connie to remain strictly platonic. This is probably because it did not undermine the strength of their relationship in any way. Sasha and Connie are a good example of how platonic relationships can really be your strongest bond, and when she died, you felt it. Connie and Jean were devastated, with Connie in particular going in a spiral in which he almost crossed a point of no return. It hurt like hell, but it was a good hurt.
3. Ebisu & Fujita (Dorohedoro)
I loved these two dumbasses? So much? Which is kinda unusual, since I found both of the characters pretty annoying on their own, but they grew on me through their interactions with each other. Also, look at this scene from the blue night arc. Superb. How can you not love them?
Note: I'll admit that I did seriously consider Nikaido and Kamen for this slot. They probably would have gotten number two if I went with them. However, as I'm an anime-only and suspect that their relationship may turn romantic before the series is over, I decided to eer on the edge of caution. Of course, the same risk theoretically exists for Fujita and Ebisu, but it feels less likely.
2. Donna Noble & 10 (Doctor Who)
Yes, I love them. Yes, that is all that I can say about that without crying. Seriously. Seek out any Davies era Doctor Who fan - they'll probably do a better job of explaining why they're so brilliant than my inelegant blubbering.
Thematically dedicating a whole-ass season to Donna Noble was one of the only good choices Moffat made, fight me
1. Xander Harris & Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Willow and Xander were close childhood friends whose relationship was featured again and again over the course of the series. I knew from the moment I received this prompt that they were going to be my number one. But the reason they got my number one slot specifically?
(Major spoilers for season six of BtVS ahead)
The yellow crayon speech.
Season six was flawed, both on a story level and on a more intentional in-universe level. Xander and Willow were at their worst for the majority of it. When the finale came, Willow took that to the next level, lashing out at the people she loves and eventually trying to destroy the world in her grief. Xander was no exception to that, as the above clip shows. But after a season where he was most memorable for getting scared and running away, he saved the world by refusing to leave his best friend. Watching the fight drain out of Willow as Xander starts to get through to her, until she eventually breaks down crying in his arms, still brings me to tears. After a generally shoddy season, it reminded me what I love about the show, which wouldn't have worked if Willow and Xander's friendship wasn't strong enough that this cheesy "save the world by talking" ending felt genuinely earned.

Listening as an act of love: Marie Mutsuki Mockett in conversation
Tumblr media
This is an excerpt of a free event for our virtual events series, City Lights LIVE. This event features Marie Mutsuki Mockett in conversation with Garnette Cadogan discussing her new book American Harvest: God, Country, and Farming in the Heartland, published by Graywolf Press. This event was originally broadcast live via Zoom and hosted by our events coordinator Peter Maravelis. You can listen to the entire event on our podcast. You can watch it in full as well on our YouTube channel.
*****
Marie Mutsuki Mockett: You don't see me talking about love or the importance of love very much. Maybe I would have a larger Instagram account if I constantly put up memes about love. I should probably do that.
I consider [American Harvest] to be an investigation of something that I didn't understand and that I thought was important. So I asked questions and wanted to try to answer those questions by talking to people who were very different than I am. To sit with them and find out what their genuine experience in the world is, and then see if I could answer some of the questions that I have.
I did not tell myself, "This is a book about love," or "You must employ love." I also didn't spend a lot of time saying to myself, "This is a book that's going to require you to be brave." I just really was trying to focus on the questions that I had and on my curiosity. I was trying to pinpoint, when I'm in a church, when I'm in a farm, when I'm around a situation that I don't understand, what's actually happening. And that was really what I was trying to do and how I was trying to direct my attention.
Garnette Cadogan: But love comes up a lot in the book. And for you, a lot of it has to do with listening. In many ways, this book is a game of active listening, and listening--as you've shown time and again--is fundamentally an act of love.
You decided to go and follow wheat farmers and move along in their regimens and cycles and rituals, and not only the rituals of labor, but rituals of worship, rituals of companionship, and issues of community. When did you begin to understand what is the real task of listening? Because in the book, time and again, you remind us that there are so many places in which there is this huge gap, or this huge chasm, in our effort to understand each other.
Marie Mutsuki Mockett: Well, that is where love comes in. Because that is the only reason why you would spend time listening to people or talking to people. What would be the motivation for trying to be open to others? Why should you be open to others? We don't have to be. So why should one be?
And you're right that things do get reduced down to this question of love. I had always heard that Christianity was the religion of love. And that love was one of the things that was unique about Christ's message. I didn't really grow up with any one religion. Also, my mother was from Japan, so I also grew up always hearing about how for a long time, the word love didn't really exist in Japanese. There really is no way to say “I love you.” Linguists still debate whether or not you can say "I love you" in Japanese and there are ways in which people say it, but it doesn't have the same history, and it doesn't have the same loaded meaning that it does in Western English.
So I was aware from a really early age, because I heard my parents and other people talk about this, that this question of love was very much a part of Western culture and that it originated from Christianity. And I really wondered what does that mean? And if it means anything, is there anything to it? And if there is, what is it? And there's a scene in the book where I talk about my feeling of disappointment that no one had ever purchased me anything from Tiffany, the jewelry store, because if you live in New York City, you're constantly surrounded by Tiffany ads. When you get engaged, you can get a Tiffany box. And then on your birthday, you can get a Tiffany box. And then in the advertisements, the graying husband gives the wife another Tiffany box to appreciate her for all the years that she's been a wife and on and on. I know that that has nothing to do with love. I know that that that's like some advertiser who's taken this notion of love and then turned it into some sort of message with a bunch of images, and it's supposed to make me feel like I want my Tiffany ring (which I've never gotten). That's not love. But is there anything there? And that was definitely something that I wanted to investigate.
I think I started to notice a pattern where I was going to all of these churches in the United States, and I'm not a church going person. And the joke that I tell is that I decided to write American Harvest partly because I wasn't going to have to speak Japanese. I could speak English, which is the language with which I'm most comfortable. But I ended up going to all these churches, and I couldn't understand what anybody was saying. I would leave the church and Eric, who is the lead character, would say, "What do you think?" And I would say, "I have no idea what just happened." And so it took time for me to tune in to what the pastors were saying, and what I came to understand is that there were these Christian churches that emphasized fear, and churches that didn't emphasize fear. And then I started to meet people who believe that God wants them to be afraid and people who are motivated by fear or whose allegiance to the church comes from a place of fear, in contrast to those who said, "You're not supposed to be afraid. That's not the point." That was a huge shift in my ability to understand where I was, who I was talking to, and the kinds of people that I was talking to, and why the history of Christianity mattered in this country.
Tumblr media
Garnette Cadogan: So you started this book, because you said, "Oh, I only need one language." And then you ended up going to language training.
Marie Mutsuki Mockett: I needed so many different languages! I mean, even this question of land ownership that we're talking about: I feel like that's a whole other language. There are places in the world and moments in history where people didn't own land. It didn't occur to them that they had to own the land themselves. So what's happening when we think we have to? Like with timeshares. I'm really serious. What need is that fulfilling? And you don't need to have a timeshare in Hawaii, where you visit like one week out of the entire year, right? So what need is that fulfilling?
Garnette Cadogan: Rest? Recreation? I’m wondering . . . has the process of living, researching, and writing this book changed you in any way? And if so, how?
Marie Mutsuki Mockett: I mean, absolutely, but it's so hard to talk about. I think that I have a much better and deeper understanding of the history of our country, and a much greater understanding of the role that race plays in our country. A deeper understanding of the tension between rural and urban, and also of our interdependence, which is something I sort of knew, but didn't completely know. And why just kicking out a bunch of states or getting rid of a bunch of people isn't actually an answer to the tension that we've faced. And it's because there's this great interdependence between people. So understanding all of that and realizing how intractable the problem is, oddly, has made me feel calmer about it. Because I realize it isn't as simple as if I just do "X" everything will be fine. I think, when you feel like, "If I just master the steps, if I can just learn this incantation, then everything will be fine," I think when you live that way, it's very frustrating. And I realized the problems are deeper than that. And some of the problems the United States is facing are problems that exist all around the world. I mean the urban rural problems: it's a piece of modernization. It doesn't just affect our country, it affects many countries.
Garnette Cadogan: You know, we've been speaking about land, God, country, Christianity, urbanity, and in this book, a lot of it is packed in through this absolutely wonderful man, Eric, and his family. Part of what makes it compelling and illuminating is we get a chance to understand so much through this wonderful, generous, and beautiful man, Eric. For those who haven't read it yet, tell us about Eric, and why Eric was so crucial to understanding in so much of what you understood, and also some of the changes that you went through.
Marie Mutsuki Mockett: He's a Christian from Pennsylvania. He’s a white man who’s never been to college, but has a genuine intellectual curiosity, although not immediately apparent in a way that would register to us. Because we're at an event that's hosted by bookstore. So when we think of intellectual curiosity, probably the first thing that any of us would do would be to reach for a book, right? That's not what he would do. He wouldn't reach for a book, he would find someone to talk to. He's a person who is very much about the lived experience. But he was very open to asking questions and trying to understand other people's experiences and how the world works, and he was very concerned.
He was the person who told me in early 2016 that he thought that Trump would probably win, when none of us thought that this was possible. And he said this is because we don't understand each other at all. And he's a very open-hearted, very generous person. And you see him change over the course of the book.
He called me the other day. He said, "I've been hearing a lot about violence against Asian Americans." He's met a couple of my friends. He wanted to know, "Are they all right?" And then he said, "I just want you to know that we talk about racial justice all the time in church," because of course, that's the way that he processes life's difficult questions: through church. And I was kind of moved by that, because one of the points that American Harvest makes is that these difficult questions don't get talked about in church. And he said, "I just want you to know this is something that we talk about." So you see him really develop and change as a result of his exposure to me and to seeing how I move through space versus how he moves through space. And it's a big leap of imagination for people to understand that other people have other experiences that are legitimate and real. It seems to be one of the most difficult things for people to understand, but he really made a great effort to do that. And I think that’s kind of extraordinary.

What are your top 5 Tokyo Ghoul characters?
I love to talk about  how much I love my faves. If you ever ask want to ask me who my faves are for a series feel free to send me an ask.
Tumblr media
1. Who do you Fight for? - Koori Ui
Seidou has the best character growth, but my undisputed favorite just in terms of character in Tokyo Ghoul has been Ui. What I like about Ui is that he hides all of the good things about him, and shows all of his most unlikable qualities on the surface. He’s jealous, spiteful, vindictive and far too judgemental on the other people around him. He basically acts like a hardass who has no friends because his entire life is his work.
But then once you actually get to know Ui as a character, you understand the profound sense of loneliness that affects him and all of his actions. The reason Ui acts so impersonally and even looks down on others so much is because he’s a soldier in a brutal and terrible war that has caused him to cauterize all of his emotional wounds with the burnt end of his cigarette in order to try to continue living.
Ui cares so deeply, but he never lets that caring show because he’s afraid of those feelings. He’s actually the most emotional character in the cast, the most sincere, the most deeply invested, but he is so afraid to let those feelings out of him because they will completely destroy him.
The most intersting thing about Ui’s character is that they do, we see his own grief destroy him. We see his mind deteriorate with loss after loss. Yet, Ui is so self aware in an ugly and visceral way of exactly what kind of terrible person he is, and the awful things he’s doing that he never stops being relatable evne in the middle of his descent to hell.
Ui can’t properly love other people, but he’d willingly walk into hell for the sake of the people he loves. And in the end, unlike Kaneki and Amon who are blind to their own selfishness, Ui admits he was doing it for himself, and his own grief. Ui’s selflessness, and his deep connection to others has the opposite effect, it does not make him a good person it drives him insane and makes him more selfish. His empathy is not a magic fix-it-all glue that makes others love him, it’s a trait that actively harms him for caring.
Tumblr media
2. Hurry up and Die, Hurry up! - Hairu Ihei
It’s obvious that Hairu is one of my faves, she’s the other half of my all time OTP for this series. What I love about Hairu is the opposite about what I love with Ui. Ui cares too much, whereas Hairu only cares about herself. She’s physically incapable of caring about others, at least not in normal ways.
Which is why she’s such a perfect example fo what happens to children in the garden. They are all of them, broken and unable to ever be fixed, and all of them trying to live in this broken, half formed state. Hairu thinks that love is the magic glue that will fix her and lives her entire life for the sake of that love. She literally murders people en-masse because she believes that will get her a little more praise.
What is so interesting about Hairu is how affection starved she is. Literally, one person comforting her by patting her on the head once earns him her lifetime devotion. She lives and dies for the person who showed her the bare minimum of affection.
Hairu is literally off in her world because she can’t uderstand people. She can’t emotionally connect to them, because she’s broken and she’s about to hit her expiration date as well. And we see this in her character, how desperate she is to connect, and yet at the same time how distant she is from others and how little empahty she has for their pain. Hairu is brutal, she slaughters people, she plays around with them like a cat playing with their food, she could not care less about the suffering of ghouls if it gets her what she wants. But she’s so driven to that point by desperation to be loved, not geniune malice.
She’s in her own world and doesn’t understand people’s feelings because she’s always been alone, but everything she does to try to escape being alone only isolates her further until it all ends on her at once. A perfect princess, Hairu Ihei’s tower collapses on her and her head is crushed underneath a falling rock.
Tumblr media
3. I would dream of that day, saving you guys, making me a hero - Seidou Takizawa
Seidou’s character is someone I admire for how relatable they are for all of their faults, but also how strong they are for constantly grappling with those faults. In a manga where characters constantly run away from who they are and their uglier sides, Seidou is completely honest with himself and knows the terrible things he’s done. He’s introduced as a selfish, entitled little brat, but then we see him actively get punished for that by being given everything he wants. He gets to be a special person like Juzou and Akira, he gets to be strong like them, he loses everything like them and it drives him completely insane.
Seidou is a walking inferiority complex, and he’s also someone who genuinely wants to be a better person so he can help the people around him. He genuinely desired to do good and be a hero. Seidou stays true to both of these traits at once, even when he flips from human to ghoul. They are both essential to the core of who he is.
What’s interesting about Seidou is he’s constantly fighting himself, because he thinks he’s so unworthy of the other people around him. He’s self destructive and always puts himself down, but his feelings of caring for others eventually become so sefless. He loves other people while being aware of their flaws, and aware of their own flaws.
And constantly confronting himself, his own trauma, and the terrible things he’s done like this is something that only hurts him, isolates him, and drives him insane but he’s the one who decided to live that way and he follows through until the end. No character is more human because Takizawa actually owns up to his human flaws and is constantly facing with them and deciding to live with them.
Tumblr media
4. I hate all of them. Everyone go die, everyone drop dead. - Urie Kuki
Urie is such a bad person, and that’s such a sexy trait to have in a character. I don’t think people who like Urie grasp what a terrible person he is, and really that’s such a shame they’re missing out on all the fun. It’s not just that he’s mean to Sasaki, or verbally dismissive of others. Urie is two-faced, he secretly despises and looks down on everyone. Urie is a child soldier raised in an abusive system, and espite being a victim of that system he has no awareness at all of how much the system victimizes people and devotes all of himself to rising to the top of that system. He actively abuses and endangers the other people around him constantly to rise to the top of that system.
Urie is so selfish that everything he does in the end is for himself. His strength is to protect his weak self, his hatred for others is to keep them at a distance because he feels constant inferiority to them. Even when he tries to protect others, it’s because he doesn’t want to have to confront feelings of loss ever again.
Urie is just such a terrible person at handling his own little weak emotions, that he always buries them so deep and gets surprised when he goes berserk and lashes out on everyone around him. He’s not strong or even a particularly good leader, he’s a pitiful coward who can’t even have the smallest of humna conversations or confrontations with Mutsuki out of paralyzing fear of losing them.
His entire identity has been based around this oppressive system and because of it, Urie is utterly destroyed as a person. He’s just a total human failure. Which makes him my type of man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. “People who need reasons to do things are just trash” - Furuta Nimura
Furuta Nimura is the main character of the tragedy, the hero that tragically falls at the end. Nimura was born in the center of the tragedy, and let himself become as ugly as the world around him. But yet until the end he always used that ugliness in himself to fight against it, rather than succumbing to it.
Nimura is paradoxically, one of the most selfish, violent and cruel characters we see in the series, and yet he does not do a single thing for himself, and everything he does is for the sake of a peace which he himself never expected to live to see.
Furuta is a terrible person who does terrible things, but he’s also actively aware of this in everything he does. He’s so painfully aware that it crushes his identity and he has to live as something other than human, to continaully wear masks and hide himself in order to just survive. He chose to be the villain instead of the hero because that’s what the world needed him to be.
What destroys Furuta in the end is the human side he repressed, because he never allowed himself to be human. Not only that but the world around him would never allow him to be either since the day he was born. He’s a child soldier planning a double suicide with the world. He takes all of the ugliness he has witnessed and throws it back in the face of others. There’s no character driven by more powerful, darker emotions than Furuta, and start to finish his tragedy is the backbone fo the entire story. He’s the strongest connecting thread, which makes him a character as ugly, painful and complex as the world around him.
But that’s all just a joke. He’s actually just a memelord without feelings. There’s no way he’s actually sad about his life, he’s too busy laughing at others.PS: Laugh, it’s fun!

Hajime and the Curse (Part 1)
[I said I was going to write this a little while ago and post it the same day but, well, that didn’t happen. But here it finally is. This is the first part in what I think is going to be a three part short fic about Hajime finding out about the zodiac curse. I really wanted to write something where Hajime interacts with Kyo and Tohru because I’d think it’d be so sweet to see them as parents.
I haven’t written fanfiction in literally YEARS so I hope this is decent.]
The Sohma estate is filled with too many mysteries to uncover, if I ever do. It seems like every corner I turn, there are adults, usually on the older side of the spectrum who look at me as if I’m something inhuman. It’s been like this every time we visit the main house and right now, we have returned for New Years. Apparently, it’s always been a big holiday for the family.
Dad fights us on going every year and I can never figure out why. He has to have bad memories. Every time we walk to Grandpa Kazuma’s dojo, he looks as if he dreads being here. It’s particularly when we pass a small house big enough to fit only one room in the back of the compound where he gets really uncomfortable. His shoulders tense and he avoids looking at it like just gazing at it will curse him with some sort of plague.
I’ll admit that it looks incredibly dreary. It has only one window and the inside looks pitch dark. I couldn’t find any sources of light in there. I don’t know its purpose or what such a small, desolate looking house is doing on the Sohma’s land full of hundreds of exquisite buildings. It stands out in the worst way.
I pass it again as I make my way to the dojo to meet up with Mutsuki at the main house. Even I can’t bring myself to look at it anymore. The place seems almost haunted, which has me curious on what exactly went on in there.
Mutsuki hops down the steps to the main house. “What took you so long, slow-poke?”
I stop at the bottom of the stairs, slipping my hands into the heavy material of my winter coat. “Just observing the beauty that is the estate.”
“It’s more melancholy than beautiful this time of year,” he says and opens the front door of the house. “Never mind that, though. You have to see how the banquet room looks. It’s all made up for the celebration tomorrow.” He goes down the hallway, passing a few maids along the way who are carrying bouquets of flowers into the banquet room. He has way more excitement over this than I do, but Mutsuki gets ecstatic over everything.
“Oh, Hajime, hi,” Shi-Chan says as he comes out of the banquet room. “I’m so glad you’re here. Could you help bring in the flowers? We’re short on maids right now and could use an extra hand.”
“Sure,” I say, then follow one of the maids to the truck in the front of the house that carried the flowers. The back of the vehicle is piled with them. Apparently, the head of the family has a thing for flowers so it’s not like it’s a surprise.
I reach into the trunk and pull out a bouquet of baby’s breath, dragging the vase out.
“Kyo?” says someone behind me. I’ve grown used to people mistaking me for my dad, so I react right away and turn around, facing someone I’ve never seen before, but he obviously knows my dad.
I set the pot down on the ground, it being too heavy to hold for too long. “I’m sorry, Kyo’s my father. I’m Hajime. Do you know him?” I ask. Now that I get a good look at him, he looks like my dad. They have the same eyes and they look like mine as well. He has to be a Sohma, but there’s got to be more to it than that. Maybe he’s a close relative.
“You’re his son?” He says it as if the very thought was incomprehensible. He flicks away his cigarette and it sinks into the wet snow beside my feet. “I wasn’t aware he had children.”
My bad vibe senses get triggered. Everything about this guy reeks of something toxic. It’s the way he said that with such disdain that makes it seem like him having a kid is something to look down upon. “May I ask who you are?”
“I’m Kyo’s father. How strange that we haven’t bumped into each other. You live on the estate?”
Oh, shit. I’d heard about him from Dad and I never intended to ever see him. From what I gathered, this guy was horrible to him, verbally abusing him for reasons my dad won’t tell me. But whatever the reasons, how he treated him was inexcusable and the very idea of him abusing my father made me hate the guy without ever meeting him.
I move away from the truck to let the maids get to the vases. “No, I’m just visiting for New Year’s. But I never had any intentions of running into you.” I try to keep myself as neutral as I can, but quickly fail. I can’t bring myself to show this guy any respect, even though Mom says it’s important to respect your elders.
“Well, that isn’t very nice. Surely not something you would say to your grandfather,” he says, ending his statement with a smirk.
My blood boils within seconds. “I already have a grandfather.”
“You mean Kazuma? You know, he only took your father in for the paycheck,” he says.
Without hesitation, I turn and pick the pot back up, done with this guy and this conversation. “I know that’s a lie.”
“I’m only being realistic. Kazuma only adopted him because he pitied the monster,” he says. There it was again; the monster. The other day, a woman I ran into at the back of the main house called me the same thing. I still don’t know what it means.
“You could be one too. You should get that checked out.” He snickers and the sound seems closer. I turn and find him standing over me.
My shoulders tense, but I refuse to make myself seem vulnerable. “I...don’t know what you’re talking. But my dad isn’t a monster, whatever you say.” I push past him, hauling the pot in my arm. “I’ve heard plenty about you. You abused my dad and my grandmother. That’s why I never wanted anything to do with you. So in that case, I’ll be going.” My foot hits the bottom step of the porch of the main house. I have to get out of here. I shouldn’t have even spoken a word to him. Mom and Dad wouldn’t have wanted me to and now it was too late.
“Well, that hurts,” he grumbles, leaning against the truck. “So you don’t know about the curse then?”
I can’t comprehend what he means, but it has to have something to do with all these questions I’ve been having. It has to be the thing this family is trying to hide.
I long to ask him more. This could be my chance to finally know what the hell was blatantly being kept a secret to me. I turn back to him, contemplating once again whether or not to ask him about it, but my lips seal tight and my eyes widen as I watch my dad come toward us.
He takes one look at his father and his eyes narrow, almost becoming cat-like. “What are you doing here?” He asks not so nicely.
I hardly ever hear him sound like that. His voice was deep and stern like he was trying to feel superior to his father who wasn’t really his father at all. Not like Grandpa Kazuma was to him.
The man backed away from the truck and my dad slowly. “I was just passing by and saying hello to my grandson.”
“He’s not your grandson,” Dad says, leveling his tone of voice unlike earlier. “I think it’s time you leave.”
The man chuckles and it doesn’t sound at all pleasant. “I was already leaving. Have a good New Year’s.” He turns to leave, but stops mid step and looks over his shoulder at Dad. “I’ll leave you with this question, Kyo. What made you think you had the right to bring any offspring of yours into this world?”
My heart sinks to my stomach all at once. That was the wrong thing to say to both me and Dad. I clutch the pot harder and Dad balls his fist. Even from a few feet away, I can spot the rapid tick in his jaw.
“Leave,” my dad says in nearly a whisper.
The man shrugs and leaves, his question going unanswered. But I think that was his intention.
I let out a breath I’d been holding. “Dad, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything-” He was in front of me in a flash before I could finish my thought.
He touches my cheek and examines my face. “He didn’t hurt you, right?”
I shake my head. “No. No, I’m fine. We just talked,” I say, biting my lip.
“What did he say to you?”
I put the pot down once again. These flowers are never going to make it into the house at this point. “He said I should check to make sure that I’m not a monster.”
Dad flinched then rose up from his position on the ground. “Don’t listen to him.”
“But what does that mean? There was a woman who called me the same thing. Something’s being kept from me.” I try not to sound angry, but my tone is getting harsher. This is so frustrating. I’m sick of continuously wondering what is going on, what is being kept from me. I’m no longer suspicious. I know there’s something this family is trying to hide. “Please, dad. If there’s something going on that affects me, please tell me. I can’t stand being this confused anymore.”
My dad’s eyes finally soften, his cat-like pupils fading away. He sighs and picks up the pot. “You’re old enough to know now. Mom and I planned to tell you eventually.” He makes his way up the steps and I follow.
“You’re finally going to tell me? You promise?” I ask. But Dad wouldn’t ever lie.
“Promise,” he says. He uses his free hand to ruffle my hair. “When we get back home, Mom and I will tell you.”
Relief floods over me like a strong ripple in the water. After all these years, I’d get my answers. “Thank you.” We enter the house and I hold the door open for him. “So what brings you to the main house?”
“I was curious to see how the preparation for the banquet was going,” he says. “I’d be more excited, but I’m not fond of New Year’s this year.”
I look up at him just slightly. He was only about five inches taller than me. “Why not?”
He grimaces and turns his gaze away from mine. “Because it’s the year of the rat.”
[Hope you liked it! I’ll continue with part 2 if you would like to see it. Thank you for reading. 💓]
