Unlock Your Potential: Why Freelancing Might Be the Best Career Move You Ever Make
In today's fast-paced world, the traditional 9-to-5 job is no longer the only path to career success. Freelancing is not just a temporary solution but a viable, rewarding career choice for many. If you’re considering making the leap into freelancing, here’s why it might be the best career move you ever make:
1. Freedom to Choose
One of the biggest advantages of freelancing is the freedom it offers. You have the power to choose the projects you work on, the clients you collaborate with, and the hours you work. This flexibility can lead to a more satisfying work-life balance and allow you to pursue projects that truly ignite your passion.
2. Unlimited Earning Potential
Unlike traditional jobs with fixed salaries, freelancing allows you to control your income potential. By setting your rates and taking on multiple projects, you can significantly increase your earnings. As you build your reputation and client base, your opportunities for higher-paying work grow.
3. Diverse Experiences
Freelancing exposes you to a variety of industries and projects, broadening your skill set and experience. This diversity not only keeps your workday interesting but also enhances your resume, making you more attractive to future clients or employers.
4. Work from Anywhere
With the right tools, freelancing can be done from virtually anywhere in the world. Whether you prefer working from a cozy home office or a bustling café, the choice is yours. This flexibility can lead to a more comfortable and personalized work environment.
5. Control Over Your Career
Freelancing puts you in the driver’s seat of your career. You get to set your goals, choose your direction, and pivot as needed. If you’re someone who values autonomy and personal growth, freelancing offers the opportunity to shape your professional path according to your vision.
6. Personal Growth and Skill Development
As a freelancer, you’re not just a specialist in your field; you’re also responsible for managing your business. This includes everything from client relations to financial management, which can be incredibly valuable skills in their own right. The challenges you face can lead to significant personal and professional growth.

imagining leaving hickeys all over kairos and even leaving a little heart shaped hickey on his stomach then drag him over to meet my parents!1!1!1!!! kairos jus does something to me fr
Tumblr media
Actually, the idea of Kairos coming over to meet his darling's parent(s) for the first time is so cute...
Kairos would try so hard to impress them-! Dressing up in his fanciest outfit, styling his hair, drenching himself in way too much cologne and taking a three-hour bath/shower in the same day. (≧◡≦) ♡
Kairos would spend tons of time researching "how to impress partner's parents". Practices handshakes, looks up conversation topics, finds ways to glorify his job description and make it sounds way more impressive than it actually is, etc. ( ´ ▽ ` ).。o♡
"I- I'm... I'm a f-free-lance graphic designer! I... I mostly work with small businesses, I... I'm building my reputation!"
Then he proceeds to hand your parent(s) his business card... Which, honestly? It's nicely designed. Kairos is talented!! ( ´ ꒳ ` )
Just hope your parent(s) don't mind all of his fidgeting and stuttering. Kairos can practice all he wants, but he's still sweating nervously. Might hide in the bathroom for a while if he gets overwhelmed.

Cousin of Edward Gorey, Ken Morton, recalls: “Cats were the only love for Edward. Even more, according to somebody, he loved cats more than people. Perhaps, in some ways, they replaced him family. And in his house cats could do what they wanted. For example, sleeping on his beard, shoulders when he was watching TV, on the table at which he worked”.
Artist and author Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was a child prodigy. He taught himself to draw by age two and to read by age 3, he skipped early years of school. Prior to college he served in World War II from 1943 until after the war. After which he attended Harvard where he was very active in numerous artistic interests and then went on to become an illustrator for Doubleday Anchor. There, he designed more than fifty covers and became recognized as a major commercial illustrator. Gorey moved through multiple other publishing houses before going free-lance in the mid-1960s. It’s said that he created covers for over 300 books of other authors in addition to his own, personal creations.
As early as 1939, Gorey began exhibiting his delightful art and in 1953 he published what is considered one of the early pre-cursors to the graphic novel movement, The Unstrung Harp. It didn’t take long for Gorey’s writings and art to begin receiving serious critical reviews and praise.
In 1972 he published his first anthology, Amphigorey – this is the book by which I discovered his works and fell ever after in love. I went on to collect Amphigorey Again and many of his individual prints and books of art. I love his quirky cross-hatch prints and books so much that I began attending auctions in search of first editions and signed works. Perhaps my favorite is The Gashleycrumb Tinies in which “N is for Neville who died of ennui.”
What I love most about Gorey is that his creations refuse to be categorized. All of his artwork seems to come together in a tone of casual, impending doom. His work is so N is for Neville_Goreycompellingly original that their specific aesthetic is referred to as “Goreyesque.” Part of their delightful eeriness is how all the art and stories seem to unfold in a setting that feels somehow outside of time. As if he has bottled a moment we would never stumble across in life but feel is all too familiar to us in its absurdity. Most of all, his works, even his commercial work, reflects what all of us as artists desire most. He lived how he wanted and made work that called to him. Many people believe that his life was his art but I believe his art was his life as a self-actualized individual.

Manga Review: 'Drifting Dragons' #11
Drifting Dragons #11 by Taku Kuwabara
Tumblr media
airship
dragons
fantasy adventure
My Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Best art since the manga's debut volume. Most consistent and reliable character development to date. Most effective drama in a good while. DRIFTING DRAGONS v11 reads like an epic Third Act, but in truth, the book is merely another collection of adrenaline-dump journeys of the Quin Zaza and its crew of misfits.
The near-distant archipelago nation of Arena suffers the throes of civil war, often beneath the hallucinogenic fog of an impossibly deadly dragon. Vannie, the bastard child of a deposed royal, has returned to her homeland to find her only friend in a coma and the authorities bickering endlessly. The hard-drinking stoic thought she would apologize to the one person she sadly missed during her many years away, but apparently, once a draker, always a draker.
DRIFTING DRAGONS v11 posits a pair of converging stories: Vannabelle hunts the Mistmaker dragon in a bid to level the angst of the people; the partial crew of the Quin Zaza likewise hunts the beast so as to open a path to diplomacy between the nations' two feuding sides. Brilliantly, this graphic novel largely eschews the low-hanging political discourse in favor of intense, brutal, hauntingly real action sequences that last for dozens of pages at a time.
The creative team indulges in the miraculous details and sprawling environmental designs that made this manga such an incredible tome at its onset. An overhead shot of the destroyed royal palace of Arena offers a view of an immense curtain wall, rivers of lush acreage, and layers of beautiful architecture left to rot. Intrepid fight scenes of hapless humans against a horde of dragons, full-size and dwarf, tease and toy with shadow, swivel the camera and play with perspective to ratchet up the intensity, and occasionally bless readers with two-page spreads to showcase the sheer magnitude of terror that awaits the crew once it steps into the darkened nest of a massive, ferocious, intelligent creature.
Episode #59 ("Solo Battle") and Episode #60 ("Beyond the Mists"), combined, register more than 50 pages of haltingly aggressive and exquisitely timed action. Vannie reaches the nest of the Mistmaker dragon first, and soon thereafter, the book's one-against-many combat scenes are raw and utterly compelling. The woman skirts a vine-covered stone dais, skids under the tentacled grasp of a dwarf dragon, swings her pile lance into position, and knifes her way through, blood and all. She knees a dragon in the jaw to free herself, she bites a limb to squirm out of another creature's grasp, and in the chapter's most fitting sequence, she dives for the rifle of a long-fallen soldier, the panel angled in her favor (as if to expose and improve her sightline) and fires and hits her target, only for the Mistmaker to seep from the darkness like a massive, Lovecraftian relief etching.
Dynamic and particular panel arrangements, as well as effectively implemented effects and speedlines, generate a level of urgency very rarely seen in the manga thus far. However much this comic book thrives on short bursts of action, DRIFTING DRAGONS v11 gifts readers prolonged adventure at the edge of their seat. The final product is fantastic. The current volume inserts a bit of fanservice, when Mika arrives on the scene to help Vannie finish off the dragon, what with her broken collarbone and busted ribs, but the implications therein don't last too long.

The past week has been chaotic BUT - I am proud to have posted something every day of dimilix week. <3 Last year was very hit and miss although I think the year before I'd also managed it. Granted, some of these are WIPs so I don't get full marks.
Day One - Lost/Confessions/Shakespearean AU think but this and all is mended - 2/3
The prompts are perfect for a Midsummer Night's Dream mashup, so that is what we are going for here with tweaks. Mine is not nearly as bawdy, although I'm enjoying Felix making sword and lance metaphors that may not be metaphors because he really is a weapons fan.
Day Two - Rumors / Dancing / Teacher AU And Miles From Where You Are - 1/4 Anastasia AU. Sylvain finds a boxer in the underground that just so happens to look almost exactly like the dead/missing prince of Faerghus. Felix is not so pleased. (I've got this one partially written but need to focus on the "Sylvain teaching someone else how to act like a proper noble" part.)
Day Three - Journeys / Ribbon / Supernatural AU AND Day 7 - Found / North Star / Another Time and Place Sir Felix and the Azure Knight Idk if you have noticed or not but I am all in on fantasy and I've been percolating on a Sir Gawain and the Green Knight story for a while as an excuse to play around with Felix's concepts of chivalry and indulge in some olde school King Arthur myths. The problem? Felix hasn't even met Dimitri yet! ;.; ;.;
Day Four - Tea Time / Ghosts / Customer Service AU lost in the supermarket There isn't much to say about this. Anna has two annoying customers being annoying. There's probably more in-jokes about the condom purchases that I could go into but it didn't really fit well. Also, if anyone cares, "lost in the supermarket" is one of my favorite songs by The Clash.
Day Five - Wounded / Midnight / Fairy Tale AU The Tale of a Boy, His Cow, and the Lost Prince - 1/3 Another one I'm pecking away at but I think this was conceived as a Jack and the Beanstalk / misc fairy tale mashup so I promise it will be weird.
Day Six - Lions & Wolves / Rituals / Tumblr AU my body aches to breathe your breath (your words keep me alive) - 1/2 - NSFW Uh - I've been thinking of writing something like this for a while because, y'know, weird fantasy. Title is from Possession by Sarah McLachlan. May or may not be relevant. Felix runs a blog about investigating old myths and cryptids and ancient sites, and Things Happen.
Day Eight - Free Day the thing and the hole of the thing I'd written this for a fellow dmlx'er who has been doing a lot of heavy lifting and graphic design and misc stuff and just thought it needed to be expanded into a full fic. With holes. Lots of holes. None of them naughty though.

Trigger Warning ⚠️ mentions of sensitive-censored offensive language and graphic violence regarding student protests that have been going on in the US. This is a long vent word vomit.
I’ve had it.
Everyone’s had it.
I didn’t wanted to post this anywhere else because I am exhausted everywhere else and I just wanted to express myself without the bullshit of META throwing influencers at my face every two seconds to drown out the shit that matters.
There’s not a day these days where I literally don’t say out loud how I am ready to just vanish into thin air. Even though I am lucky— to have the ability to be in academia, have an education, have access to resources, health, and humans who care about me. I have a phone I can vent on and roof over my head which some people don’t even have in this dystopia.
But I’m struggling, along with millions of other young people born into my generation and even younger now. I can’t take it anymore.
When we express one sliver of weakness. Show the tiniest morsel of humanity and humility, we get cussed at, screamed at, shot at, sniped at, pinned down, spat on, harassed, chased, bombed, teargassed, ganged-up on—, ridiculed, beaten, cornered, caged, jailed, threatened, joked about, snickered at, thrown-under-the bus, punished, oppressed, gaslit, abused, and killed spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and intellectually by powers beyond us.
Powers decided by outdated, pretentious, and greedy people who use every opportunity to twist the world into one that favors discrimination of diversity, equality, and justice.
Whether it’s the government, law enforcement, big conglomerates, and massive news businesses. They disgust me with their behaviors and response with the issues that have been plaguing this country.
I’m also sick of the petty brainwashed soldiers of my generation who are all too quick to help our nation’s worst— by allowing the spread of misinformation onto an even younger generation. It’s embarrassing to be in the same age bracket as these individuals.
Because posting an aesthetic lilac blurb on instagram and appropriating POC movements to gaslight people into thinking protesting for ceasefire is wrong— is incredibly morally questionable, deplorable, and vomit-inducing.
Also hundreds of literal strangers who have yelled the most disgusting language towards peers, faculty, and community members make me question the complacency of the campus administrators to these violent mobs.
They were literally trolls that found their way out of their “designer” “head to toe” chronically-foxTV-worshipping basement to yell at all of us from racial slurs to insults about how “broke” we were in person while wagging their fingers.
These counter protestors and online trolls pillaged our students with racial slurs, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, supremacist ideology. Telling us that we deserved to be shot at, to be beaten: we should replace the hostages and let terrorists massacre us. We should be xxxped, harassed. We don’t work enough we are just complaint too much. Why don’t we get a job? Why don’t we go back to school and stop wasting our trust fund money from our parents? But also why are we so ugly and broke? Why are we such sensitive whiny little pxnsies? Why are we so xxxxxed? So helpless and hopeless why don’t we go pray for our salvation? Why don’t we just fall inevitably to our police overlords? Our police will take care of us: “free the police!” thank goodness for them! We should get kxxxed and they should kxxx us. Good on the police for making sure this nation’s youth and mentors sustain injuries from being fired at, tear-gassed, maced, tasered, dragged, shoved, beaten, chased, mobbed, surveil-lanced, threatened , assaulted, jailed, dogpiled, flared at, fireworks illegally thrown at, face-planted and pinned down, unmasked, doxxxed, flashbombed, smoked out, cornered, mobbed ruthlessly— while being deployed in full SWAT gear, bullet proof vests, rubber bullets, flashes, batons, rifles, sniper rifles, tasers standing by until they made sure protestors were exhausted having been at the encampment protesting since five days ago to then tear down and arrest everyone.
Elderly and the young of our schools were dragged forcefully and face-planted to the ground as coppers load them onto prison buses across the nation. When all they did was chant and defend themselves from mobs and police in SWAT gears with makeshift barriers of wood and plastic.
I’m tired of our students and faculty having only one another to lean on. I’ve had enough. I’m sick of counter protestors masquerading as informed and empathic people when they have said and acted on some of the most horrible things. The fact that I know and seen peers with serious injuries, bleeding, fractures, and burns is concerning.
I’m sick of administrators everywhere gaslighting and tricking media into believing the protestors and encampments from the past week and months— are unlawful and unconstitutional. And the media participates in the abuse by painting us as criminals when our schools have sacrificed us, faculty, and community safety. Because: they— don’t want to do the work to change anything.
People think we are joking. People think it’s not serious. People think we are picnicking . People think kids just don’t want to work anymore.
Well I have news for you buddy: most of us are nearly graduating from or just started a painfully elitist, soul sucking path down into scrapping by as we spend a huge part of our youth chasing down enough job opportunities to pay off loans to an education that we can’t afford with each passing year. Most of us have no food security, home security, and job security; even though we slave years away since childhood in institutions to adhere to the standard of an ableist, elitist society. We are punished and shunned socially and economically when we don’t meet the standards or show the tiniest bit of exhaustion.
You can criticize us for looking “too old” for our age. You can criticize us for seeming to not know how to write letters(by the way— we can, it’s not hard). You can criticize us for our obsession with capitalism(which we have you to thank for). You can criticize us for being obsessed with our phones doom scrolling away. But you are kidding yourself if you don’t think the most of are doing our very best with the cards we were dealt— and you all contributed to the hellhole we are growing up in.
You should’ve expected this generation to demand change and take action into our own hands when we became legal adults. We are sick of living in a system of passiveness, complacency, and ignorance. We are sick twiddling our thumbs as rotting pieces of flesh bags from every continent are literally running us all into the ground.
I’ve had it.
We’ve had it.
Everyone’s had it,
If you don’t want to help us? Fine.
Leave us alone. Don’t have anything good to say? Keep walkin’ and leave us alone.
Stop pretending you care about us.
“You know who I really feel sorry for? The seniors who are about graduate! They should be enjoying their last semester!”
There are no universities left in Palestine, schools everywhere are threatening their students with academic consequences for exercising free speech, people had to literally hold onto our friends and professors to make sure police don’t claw them away and throw them in the slammer buses. Jewish students within encampment were attacked and arrested for standing with their peers at peaceful protest— So why don’t you and your cushy “journalism” coverage think next time before you say something so embarrassing on national television.
As per tradition. I’ll add a song suggestion or two.

10 benefits of choosing a free lancing
Freelancing has emerged as a cornerstone of modern work culture, offering a level of convenience and cost-effectiveness that traditional employment models often struggle to match. In this comprehensive exploration, we delve into the myriad reasons why freelancing has become the go-to choice for both independent professionals and businesses seeking flexible solutions.
Tumblr media
Flexibility of Work Arrangements: One of the primary reasons it offers in work arrangements. Freelancers have the autonomy to choose their projects, set their schedules, and work from locations of their choosing. This flexibility enables them to achieve a better work-life balance, accommodate personal commitments, and tailor their workload to suit their preferences.
Diverse Range of Opportunities: Freelancing opens doors to a diverse range of opportunities across industries and skill domains. From creative roles such as graphic design and content writing to technical roles like software development and digital marketing, freelancers can explore a wide spectrum of projects that align with their expertise and interests. This variety not only keeps work engaging and fulfilling but also allows freelancers to expand their skills and knowledge base.
Global Reach and Collaboration: The digital nature of freelancing transcends geographical boundaries, enabling freelancers to collaborate with clients and colleagues from around the world. This global reach not only broadens professional networks but also exposes freelancers to diverse perspectives, cultures, and market dynamics. Collaborating with international clients and teams enriches the freelance experience and opens doors to cross-cultural learning and collaboration.
Minimal Overhead Costs: Freelancers enjoy minimal overhead costs compared to traditional businesses. They typically operate from home offices or co-working spaces, eliminating the need for expensive office leases, equipment, and utilities. This cost-saving aspect allows freelancers to offer competitive rates to clients while maintaining healthy profit margins. It also reduces financial barriers to entry, making freelancing accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Efficient Time Management: Freelancers have the flexibility to manage their time efficiently, optimizing productivity and workflow. They can allocate time based on project priorities, deadlines, and personal preferences, ensuring a balanced workload and timely delivery of work. This autonomy in time management contributes to higher productivity, reduced stress levels, and improved work quality, benefiting both freelancers and their clients.
Specialized Skill Development: Freelancing encourages continuous learning and skill development. Freelancers are motivated to upgrade their skills, stay abreast of industry trends, and pursue certifications or training programs that enhance their expertise. This ongoing professional development not only improves the quality of work delivered but also enhances freelancers' marketability and competitiveness in their respective fields.
Client Diversity and Portfolio Building: Freelancers have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, industries, and project types. This diversity enriches their portfolio, showcasing versatility, adaptability, and a track record of successful collaborations. A strong portfolio not only attracts new clients but also instills confidence in existing clients, leading to repeat business and referrals, which are essential for sustained freelancing success.
Work-Life Integration: Freelancing promotes a holistic approach to work-life integration, allowing freelancers to prioritize personal well-being alongside professional commitments. They can schedule breaks, pursue hobbies, and engage in self-care activities without compromising work responsibilities. This balance contributes to greater job satisfaction, mental health wellness, and long-term sustainability in freelancing careers.
Opportunity for Entrepreneurship: Freelancing often serves as a stepping stone to entrepreneurship. Many freelancers leverage their skills, experience, and networks to launch their own businesses, offering services, products, or consulting expertise. This transition from freelancing to entrepreneurship is facilitated by a deep understanding of market demands, customer preferences, and industry nuances gained through freelance experiences.
Adaptability to Market Trends: Freelancers are inherently adaptable to market trends and industry shifts. They can quickly pivot their focus, acquire new skills, and capitalize on emerging opportunities in dynamic sectors. This agility allows freelancers to stay relevant and competitive in fast-changing environments, positioning them as valuable assets to businesses seeking flexible and adaptable talent.
Tumblr media
In essence, freelancing combines the benefits of autonomy, diversity, cost-effectiveness, and professional growth, making it a convenient and attractive choice for individuals seeking flexible work arrangements and businesses looking to access specialized expertise on-demand. As the freelance economy continues to evolve, its impact on workforce dynamics, innovation, and global collaboration remains profound, shaping the future of work in profound ways.

CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE REFERENCES - 3, 4 & 5
FlyerWrk
Tumblr media
Flyerwrk is an agency I researched during the D&AD project. Whilst looking at their work I had also noticed the unique layout and colour scheme they used on their website. My overall vibe would not suit this particular colour scheme, however I find the way they use colour to link their dark, dingy all together inspirational. I also love the use of sideshows in their portfolios of different projects. This allows the viewer to be interactive, making the experience more interesting. I would like to add this technique into my own website
Cedilla.Studio
Tumblr media
Cedilla.studio is a studio which specialises in graphics and type. They provide unique typefaces, fonts, assets and bespoke custom design services..They are known for Cedilla which transforms the ‘pronunciation of certain letters, creating distinct sounds that significantly impact the meaning of words.’ Out of all of the references I have looked at so far, Cedilla’s website intrigued me the most. Their different fonts are presented in a perfectly laid out form which helps lead the viewer through the website. They also use the alphabet to help separate their projects, making it all easier to find.
DopeDarius
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Darius Parkinson (DopeDarius) is a free-lance graphic designer based in the United Kingdom. He works with some of the UK’s most popular urban street wear brands.
I am very inspired by Parkinson’s work due to being interested in fashion myself. His website carefully showcases his best projects in a simplistic yet effective way. He uses negative space to make the work stand out and also not overwhelm the viewer. I am interested in how he adds moving image on his home page where the background is animated with the logo but is blurred so that the text over top is easily seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like to use his technique of using a strip of colour / image to section his work into projects.

Anna Rothach - Graphic designer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The website has a grey outline which reminds me of a pdf document. I like how this links to her work because some of her graphic design work and sign designs will be digital. I like how she also includes the different types of work she does on the home page by using images to show her work.
The overall layout of her website is simple which draws the audiences attention to her work. However, the small accents of pink helps to draw the audience's eye to certain locations, such as the website and foot note.
I liked how her menu is easy to navigate. By using categories to separate her work she has shown that this is two different types of work she does. This hints that she may work in a different way for each. I also like how the terms she uses are quite friendly and welcoming such as: 'Get in touch'. I think this stops her from sounding unapproachable.
Tumblr media
I dislike how her about page has a different layout to her other pages. This makes it look out of place and not apart of her visual identity. The information is written in third person which creates a barrier between her and the audience because it feels like this is not her website. This tense may be more useful for an agency who is more general than a free lance as the potential clients are hoping to get to know you and your work not someones view on you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like how she has shown the subcategories of her work by using images as this follows the same method as her home page. By using a set grid to show her work, it helps to separate them from each other. I like how she has placed the option to view more of her work if the person wants to as this stops them from being overwhelmed immediately.
Following this I will look at making my website consistent by using aspects of my home page, such as the large image of my work in other pages. I will also look at making my text consistent and have a friendly tone.
