It's a rare occasion when Frederick is on the phone outside of working hours. And with the rarest person on the receiving end.

Frederick's voice is trembling, but hardly because he is weak. He isn't and he knows that. He also knows that weakness and powerlessness are two different things. That's what he is now - utterly, completely, devastatingly powerless. Even more so, annoyed, and angry, and afraid.

He confessed, well, almost confessed to Jack. But to what end?

But he is not venting. Oh no, never. He also seldom snaps. He does, of course. But seldom.

What Frederick is feeling right now is far from simple emotional turbulence. As he clutches his phone up to the point when your knuckles go pale, there is a clear vision of how a mere phrase "having an old friend for dinner" uttered once by a particular someone evolves, mutates and envelopes him in dark bloody haze.

And he fears that next time he would actually feel the cut.

"You and your FBI... I swear, you are all too drunk to hear a word I say. Drunk on your righteousness and..." he doesn't want to say the word, but it still escapes his lips, "... contempt."

Idea! So, Leland was practically obsessed with making Jack his husband and/or getting revenge on him for not being his husband depending on where we are in the timeline, right? So, au where Frederick was a "gift" from some god, that had Jack's DNA instead of or along with Isolde's.

Leland just gets this adorable, excitable ball of sunshine, and he has Leland's hair, but he also has green eyes coming from Jack's pastel tie dye eyes, and when he gets exited his eyes sparkle, and glitter falls out of his hair when he moves his head.

And Leland hates it.

He hates his sickness (which he got from Jack), he hates his love of books (which he got from Jack), he hates how he gets exited over nothing (which he gets from jack).

Leland gets the child he's always wanted, and he shuns him.

He beats him down and insults him and beats him, until his eyes stop shining, and until glitter stops showing up by his bed.

And then he meets Gwen.

They never date. They never even fall in love. Whenever it's brought up, it just feels wrong for them to date. But, they're the best of friends. When Gwen told him that she loved him in that library, and he got up, she could have sworn something shiny fell on the ground. When he saw her costume at the gala, his eyes sparkled like the sun. When the CPC called him their friend at the dinner party, he had to try quite hard to prevent glitter in his food for the whole day, even after the party. When Whitney told him his feelings were valid, his eyes went a shade away from black.

And then, when Blaine called him a loser, it all went away. It was like a flashlight turning off. His eyes were a dull green, practically grey. His hair lost it's glimmer sheen. He was practically unrecognizable, when he got out of that hole.

But nobody noticed, Frederick realized. Nobody had noticed his sadness, or his pain before. Nobody had noticed the bruises from when Blaine hit him. Nobody noticed when he had a flashback because Lance touched him to suddenly.

It wasn't because they didn't notice, Frederick realized.

It was because they didn't care

manhwa/webtoons that I enjoy and recommend. *spoiler warning*

Not sew-wicked step mom

Very wholesome iteration of the traditional snow white fairy tale, but still can tackle very serious topics correctly. Abigail is still a human in terms of emotion and can make mistakes, Blanche isn't the annoying kid archetype I usually see and I have come to care about her, and the king, Sabrian's past that explains his avoidence of Abigail and the strained relationship with Blanche was handled with care regarding the often misused topic of SA.

Cursed princess club

The first webtoon that got me to stay on the app, Gwen is a great protagonist that slowly learns to love herself again with the help of not just her friends and family but also coming to peace with herself. Characters are flawed and many learn to grow, the relationship between Gwen and Frederick takes the perfect amount of time to progress without dragging on, and there are characters who do/say something cruel to the protagonist but they aren't villainzed and allowed to grow! (Frederick and Aurelia)

This Isekai maid is forming a union

This one is on webtoon canvas and it made me feel validated in my opinions on the usual tropes in otome isekai such as workplace abuse, racism, capitalism, "raising your lover" (ew) and even more obscure ones like gentrification. The first few chapters are mostly about deconstructing toxic manhwa tropes but it grows to have its own plot and story, there are many characters too who aren't exactly the greatest people but still have backstories that explain their behavior, while they aren't excused it does make them so much more human.

This was a new one I was recommended and it met my expectations. There FL Margaret is a complex character with her own flaws learning to adapt to living a commoner life after she dies and comes back, the cast of characters all have their own stories and while they aren't exactly as fleshed out, this manhwa only has around 30 chapters. It could just be me but I also think that Margaret is autism coded and I found her surprisingly relatable.

Another manhwa that kept me on webtoon after cursed princess club ended. Pereshati is one of the most realistic regression protagonists I've seen and I actually felt her emotions during angsty scenes especially ones that involved the step-mom. There's a realistic relationship progression with Therdeo and in the beginning even after they marry, they aren't exactly close. Best of all, other characters like Saoirse, celphi all are their own person with their own pasts and goals, even the maid staff is treated like actual people and not props.

Not your typical reincarnation story

While it's not the greatest isekai story I've ever seen it's still a good one, it doesn't immediately try to promote woman vs woman in the form of Edith and Rhyse getting along with an attempt at friendship, the ML Killian, while not my most favorite still has great character development as he slowly breaks away from the authors control and when it comes to the perceived white lotus Rhyse, it's likely that as the main character she's being controlled the most and it's a little heart breaking knowing that no matter how hard Edith tries, the narrative will force them to be enemies. A nice commentary on the way authors will warp their own narrative even if it doesn't make sense to the plot.

I’m not sure what to do with the second half of that because I love Wentworth beyond rhyme or reason? If it helps, you can do a correlation with their temper; Magnus is quite capable of being vengefully petty after all, and Wentworth refuses to see Anne how she is when they meet again in the future, largely because he’s still holding on to how much Anne hurt him.

/the fact that she hurt herself more is not a thing he would have any way of knowing, really, though perhaps it should have been obvious to anyone who knew her well. But he perhaps didn’t know her as well as he thought? It was not a terribly long romance, the first time ‘round.

Rapunzel and the Lost Lagoon

As soon as I heard about this book, I put it on my birthday wishlist. But alas, my birthday had come and gone. No Lost Lagoon. Apparently my mom didn’t see it on the wishlist, so that’s why. Flash forward to Christmas Day and I held the book in my hands, which were trembling with excitement. Not really, but you get the idea. I had been waiting to devour this book for months on end and I did. So without further ado, I will present to you this handy-dandy post that encapsulates my thoughts on Lost Lagoon before, during, and after reading. I thought it would be fun to record my expectations and compare them to what I discovered. If you’ve read Lost Lagoon, what did you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts! ❤️

Before Reading

honestly, I’m not quite sure what to expect. All I know is that there’s a lot of moments between Raps and Cass and I am ready for them!

maybe it explains how Cass came to be Raps’ lady-in-waiting? (I hope so because I’ve always wondered this...)

I think I’ll like the book as a whole (I’m hoping I’ll love it)

I’m guessing that it is cute, funny, serious, and adventurous all in one

maybe we’ll learn more about Cass?

will Raps tell Cass about her life in the tower?

what will be the ratio of lighthearted to serious moments? Am I more likely to laugh or cry? Probably both 😅😂😂

Rapunzel’s hair hasn’t grown back yet? Oh, it’s her first week in Corona. Okay...

“Something was missing. I was hoping painting would help me find whatever that was, or at least help me end the afternoon on a happy note.” (is this relatable or what? I know not to chase after the elusive beast referred to as happiness, but I do often strive to end the day on a good note because I feel like Satan wins if I don’t)

Friedborg is Arianna’s lady-in-waiting? That makes more sense now. I always feel bad not knowing much about her or her background. I hope she makes some appearances in the book (no sooner did I type this than I look down and skim the scene where she teaches Raps how to sit. Crazy, right?)

the angst Cass feels towards her dad because he wants her to be a lady-in-waiting when she clearly doesn’t... so relatable (it’s tough when a parent’s expectations and our own dreams/desires don’t match)

I didn’t realize Cass created the maps herself! She’s so determined to prove herself to her dad, it hurts 😭😭

I wonder if the pools in Yultadore are what make up the lost lagoon...

I’m noticing a pattern in the words used to describe Cass: knowledgeable, brave, etc. I think that’s cool because I feel like her pessimism gets a lot more attention in the series. It’s nice to acknowledge her other qualities as well.

Arianna chose Cass to be Raps’ lady-in-waiting. I always wondered how she got the position. I’m loving how many little things this book is explaining 🥰

Also, just noticed the bird illustrations on the page of every new chapter. I wonder if there’s a pattern...

I wanted to cry for Cass. Poor thing just wants to follow her dreams. I like the way the finality of the decision was described. It’s so tragic 💔

“When Cassandra saw him [Eugene], her face clouded over like a stormy afternoon” 😂😂 I love how Cass doesn’t try to hide her feelings about people. It’s true that she keeps personal things close to her chest, but not when it comes to what she thinks of others. Honesty is the best policy, right?

I love how Cass continuously prompts Raps to keep reading the poem. She’s like, “Yeah, yeah, just get to the good stuff” 😂

about that poem... maybe it’s from Herz Der Sonne’s perspective. Could the “truth sealed in precious stones” be a reference to Zhan Tiri’s disciples and how they were trapped within stones? And what about the three gems? What’s the emerald tapestry supposed to be? Does it reference Saporia? I HAVE TOO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

okay, so Cass is responsible for her fear of water. That’s almost worse because it invites shame and self-hatred, which makes it more difficult to push against that fear or overcome it 😔

the importance of Raps agreeing to help Cass even after realizing she doesn’t want to be her lady-in-waiting is HUGE. This is something I feel like should have happened throughout Season 1 but never did (Raps supporting Cass and trusting that she has a good reason for things even if she doesn’t understand)

I forgot to take notes as I read the majority of part 2. I’m currently a chapter or two away from part 3 and all I have to say is that something bad is about to happen. I can feel it. Dahlia’s definitely shady and so is Marco. I suspected Marie earlier but now I’m not sure. She wasn’t obvious until she was but now she’s not again so maybe she is guilty after all? Either way, Raps is making dumb decisions and I’m over here yelling at her to get her life together before she gets killed or kidnapped (whichever comes first, I guess) 😅🙃

Cass is absolutely roasting Rapunzel and I am here for it! Don’t mind me just munching away on my popcorn over here 🍿

Cass said she’s finally gonna leave Corona so I bet Raps will fess up and tell her that Dahlia’s been helping her with the painting for Cass so Cass will let her guard down and think Dahlia’s okay after all. But... she won’t be and they’re gonna realize she was the bad guy after all 😎

After Reading

so I did get to see how Cass and Raps first met (also how she first met Eugene as well)

I like how they combined their talents and passions at the end to create the map painting

There were a bunch of lines that made me laugh, although there were just as many that hit me like a knife to the chest (pretty much anything angsty from Cass’ POV) so I like how it made me feel all the feels (I felt like an investigator trying to figure out who the bad guy was and that was a blast 😆)

overall it was pretty good. I did feel like the characters were off (Arianna seemed like she swapped personalities with Frederick at times and Eugene apologized for joking Cass- as if!), but other than that I enjoyed it. There were a bunch of new characters being introduced so it was somewhat hard to tell who was bad and who wasn’t but I guessed correctly in the end. I was hoping there would be more than one bad guy but oh well.

I’m glad I read it because now I know a few extra things about Corona and its surrounding countries (plus I can finally read through all the Lost Lagoon related tumblr posts I saved for later... I was waiting until I read the book and here I am!)

If anyone needs me, I’ll be going through LL tumblr posts. I should definitely be sleeping but that’s not important 😅😂😂

A Short Angsty Morgan & Lucina Drabble

(This idea’s been floating around in my head for a while and I finally got the urge to type it out, so here you go)

“...me too?”

“W-What?” Lucina was still in a bit of a daze after what had just transpired, and so she missed most of what Morgan said initially. There was a lot of tension in the air among the Shepherds after she had been talked down from striking Robin by her father. It had been a few hours since then, but it had been enough time for the younger tactician to think over what he’d witnessed, and now he couldn’t help but ask.

“Would you try to kill me too?” 

There was so much more he could have said but he chose not to, and his tone and expression spoke volumes enough to get the point across regardless. There was so much pain and hurt, tears welling up in the brown-haired tactician’s eyes. It stung Lucina that much more to see Morgan so pained by the decision she’d been about to make. How could she have forgotten? She’d been about to deprive the person who called her his closest friend of the only anchor they’d had to this world before they really started connecting with the other sons and daughters of the Shepherds, and before some memories had started resurfacing. Lucina had been prepared to take away something so dearly important to one of the few people who brought her some sense of happiness and hope in such grim times. But underneath the surface there was something more than sorrow and agony, and she’d never heard it from Morgan before, but there was no  mistaking it in the way that he’d asked her what he did.

It was anger. Anger, from Morgan of all people. Anger that Lucina would be so selfish, anger that Lucina would kill and refuse to believe in or trust in any alternative, anger that the person he’d trusted the most and that had given him a much-needed sense of belonging more than even Owain and Cynthia had would go behind his back and do something that would shatter him completely...it was chilling for both of them once they recognized it, but it was entirely justified, and Lucina felt so ashamed by the fact. Where had the strong, convicted princess who would do anything to save the future disappeared to? She had fled, being reminded that she was more than that...and so were those around her.

“Morgan...I...”

Morgan shrugged out of his cloak and threw it to the ground, showing the back of his arm to the princess as his emotions started to reach their breaking point. There it was, as plain as day, just like the one on his mother’s hand.

The mark of Grima.

“You what?! You would raise your sword to me if I would be a threat to the future too?! You would kill me without a second thought if Grima could use me in some way?! You would stab someone who believed in you with all his heart all this way in the back?! Answer me, Lucina!”

Once again, Lucina’s selfishness caused her chest to tighten up as his words stung her like a dagger being driven into her. As much as he was Frederick’s son, he was Robin’s son just as much, and there was no changing the fact that he had the Fell Blood...and apparently the brand had manifested itself as well as a cruel reminder of that. 

“Morgan, I would never do that to you, I-...I just lost control. All I could think about was...saving the future-”

“A future that doesn’t belong to us!” His emotions were reaching a breaking point, and the more he shouted, the more pain that they both endured. “A future that isn’t the one we know! A future that can always be changed! Did you forget what I told you the last time we talked?! How confident I was that the future could be different, that my mother believed that with so much conviction and so did I, that we could write our own fate?! Did those words mean nothing to you?! Of course they didn’t! All you could think about was stopping the world you knew from existing, and it didn’t matter who got hurt in the process!”

“Morgan, that’s not true!” Lucina was practically crying out in desperation to him now, feeling weaker than she had in a long, long time. “Your words, they made me feel inspired, they made me feel like there was hope! You...made me feel like together all of us could make anything happen!”

“THEN WHY?!” A dead silence hung in the air after Morgan’s angry shout echoed. No doubt just about everyone else had heard that, yet the tactician’s son didn’t give a second thought to that anymore. “Why were you so willing to throw all of that away?! Why?! Why did you forget?! Why did you...forget...?...f-forget...”

His entire body went limp all of a sudden as the word forget kept echoing through his mind, causing him to slump down and curl up into a ball. He didn’t want to forget anything else. He didn’t want her to forget him either. Had he even been a part of her life before? Had she forgotten him too? He didn’t want to forget, he couldn’t forget. He’d forgotten so much, and what precious memories would he lose if he forgot? No, Morgan remembered, he didn’t want to forget, no no, forgetting would be bad, he didn’t want to forget, he wanted to remember, he had been starting to remember, he needed that-...

The pain finally overtook the anger, and drowned it in a sea of tears that wouldn’t stop spilling down his face.

Lucina’s jaw hung open. She wanted to say so many things, wanted to do something, yet she knew that even touching Morgan would only make him recoil further or lash out at her, or perhaps both. ‘I’m...I’m so sorry Morgan...”

“Don’t...forget...can’t...forget...scared...alone...” It felt like it had in that nightmare. All alone, darkness all around, a cold chill freezing him to the bone, and no sense of who he was, only knowing that he was lost and in a bad place.

Utterly emotionally exhausted, Lucina slumped down on the nearest clear patch of grass she could find, keeping some distance from Morgan while he kept muttering and murmuring all those things. She wanted to approach him, to say something comforting, that she would never turn her sword upon him, that he meant far too much to her, that...

...but the words she truly wanted to say were caught in her throat, and she couldn’t get them out...and even if she did say it, would he believe her now? Would he see it as any more than some cheap attempt to try to play at his emotions to get him out of his anxiety-ridden state? Even if she did tell him now...there would be no way he’d be able to handle it, so even though she felt her chest tighten at the idea of having to hold back further, she had no choice, not when Morgan was like this...and even on the off-chance it would turn out like she wanted, after what had happened, Morgan was far better than she deserved.

Lucina had been about to leave, but as she did step away, she could hear Morgan sobbing rather loudly and a plea, barely more than a whisper, “...please...”

“....what?”

“...please...” came the weak whimper of desperation again, “...don’t leave...so alone...so cold...” Morgan was shivering, still curled up on the spot in a more vulnerable state than she’d ever seen him before. Guilt-ridden and pained as Lucina was, it was all she could do to try and comfort him and try to bring back the cheerful, positive-thinking tactician she knew and break down this hollow shell that was hiding him. If he had to, Morgan could yell at her again when he had gathered himself.

But for now, Lucina sat beside him at let him curl up close as he tried to hide himself from the nightmares that had rushed back into his head as a result of thinking about forgetting, a result of thinking about the memories he had lost and the fear of losing all the ones he’d made or recovered now.

After all, she couldn’t abandon him, not after he felt she already had just before.
