I don't know what was happening with James Ivory in the 1980s but he had a crush on young Rupert Graves. And I can't blame him.

A Room with a View (1985) Director: James Ivory
“I have no profession. My attitude - quite an indefensible one - is that as long as I am no trouble to anyone, I have the right to do as I like. It is, I dare say, an example of my decadence.”

Exhibit 1: You young people need to know that back in the mists of Tumblr history Freddy/Floyd had a brief moment as a ship:
Exhibit 2: Also, the bit the novel (Chapter XII) where Freddy ‘swallows a pollywog’ (tadpole) during said nude bathing, hmmm:
Tumblr media
In 1958, Forster spoilt it all by writing a sequel, ‘A View Without A Room’ [text here], in which Forster imagined later-life Freddy as an ‘unsuccessful but prolific’ doctor (i.e. makes little money but has lots of kids). But the story also kills George and has Lucy living in Watford, so I say we can ignore married-doctor Freddy:
Why Freddy Honeychurch from A Room with a View is Definitely Gay:
irreverent attitude toward straight marriage
expresses no romantic interest in women
accidentally asks George Emerson to go swimming nude with him because he is overwhelmed by George’s edgy and brooding charms
Mr. Floyd stays at his house to hang out and play tennis (boyfriend behavior)
In conclusion: Freddy Honeychurch is a gay icon who deserves more love

Since Halloween is approaching, I made a list of the spooky creatures I think B&M characters would be:
Olrik - vampire Mortimer - wizard Nasir - ghost Blake - the normal man who finds himself stuck in the haunted castle Honeychurch - cursed man who has been trapped in a cat body but can take on a human appearance when in the presence of the scent of lavender Grossgrabenstein - mummy Pradier - lives as an abstract entity in the walls of the castle and can take human appearance (tho being made of stone) Sharkey - werewolf Jack - the castle's creepy butler (who happens to be a pumpkin-headed scarecrow who stands in front of the castle during the day) Freddy - invisible man Sadi - headless knight (Dullahan) Razul - Fire spirit who lives in the castle fireplace Miloch - necromancer Septimus - weird scientist (like Frankenstein) who spends his time locked in the basement

It has come to my attention that it's Period Drama Appreciation Week 2023. I love period dramas and grew up watching them. They have been a formative part of my life and I'm now too disabled to watch video. Even gifs are too difficult for my brain to process. It is also Bi Visibility Week and I'm posting this on Bisexual Visibility Day. Since I can't safely post a pile of gifs, here is a list celebrating actors/characters/moments from period dramas that have been significant to my bisexuality. [Yes, this is a big list. I am missing out on watching and re-watching A Lot of awesome period dramas and I hate it. This list is helping me reclaim a bit of joy. Also I've probably forgotten some favourites and may update this.]

Fun fact:
Rupert Graves as Freddy Honeychurch in the movie A Room with a View (also by Merchant Ivory productions) has been my Tumblr icon for months. I still haven’t watched the movie, though I did check out a copy from the library to watch over break. I refuse to change it.

Freddy Honeychurch: Come and have a bathe.
George Emerson: I'd like that.
Reverend Beebe: [laughs] That's the best conversation opening I've ever heard. "How do you do. Come and have a bathe."

reviews for ransom #008
TITLE: A Room with a View
DIRECTOR(S): James Ivory
GENRE(S): Romance, Historical
RATING: 7.5/10
REVIEW: This is my mother's favorite film! There was so much I loved about it: the artistic aesthetic, visuals, and setting made me swoon, as I feel it intended me to. I already adore Florence, but this made me fall in love all over again. A great, strong cast of unique characters, my favorite by far being the token silly brother, Freddy Honeychurch. Lucy Honeychurch herself is a great protagonist, though I felt underwhelmed by parts of Helena Bonham-Carter's delivery, and unfortunately, the same goes for Julian Sands as George Emerson. Regrettably the love story fell short for me, though I enjoyed how George was plain old strange with a deep heart, especially when compared to the snooty, awful Cecil. Some of George's behaviors just plain bothered me; maybe it's my taste in romance? Though the gorgeous period setting and costume charmed me, I was left awkwardly clutching onto an underdeveloped true love.
