The 2nd of February is the Christian festivity called Candlemas (Candelera in Catalan). It's the date that ends the Christmas cycle, where traditionally people would put away the Nativity scene, though nowadays lots of people take it down soon after Three Wise Men Day (6th of January).

What does this day celebrate?

Candlemas is most likely a remnant of the Ancient Roman festival of Parentalia (last day of the Feralia), celebrated annually in February to remember the dead. During Parentalia, they did processions where they dressed in black and carried little blessed candles to the cemeteries to guide the dead people's souls.

Some say that the origins of Candlemas might also be related to another Ancient Roman festival celebrated in February: the Lupercalia, in honour of the god of fertility and shepherds Lupercus.

In the Christian tradition, this festivity celebrates when Mary brought Jesus to the temple. Biblical scholars explain that it was a tradition for Jewish women to bring their child to the temple 40 days after giving birth. Then, the child was presented to the priests and they were blessed in front of candles, and the woman was purified. Since the Christian tradition says Jesus was born on the 25th of December, 40 days after his birth is the 2nd of February. Candlemas is celebrated every year on this day to commemorate Mary introducing Jesus to the temple. The festivity was introduced officially by Pope Gelasius I in the year 496.

How is Candlemas celebrated?

Believers take candles to be blessed, and some places hold processions with lit candles. The candles are taken home to be kept, because they're believed to have protection powers.

Unlike other festivals of the Christian calendar (like local patron saint days, Christmas, Three Wise Men Day, Saint Anthony/Three Laps, Saint George, Midsummer/Saint John, Corpus, etc) which are celebrated by everyone in our country, Christian and non-Christian alike; Candlemas is not so widely celebrated by people who aren't Christian believers. But even then, there is one thing that everyone knows Candlemas for: predicting the weather.

In Catalan we have the saying: "Si la Candelera plora, l'hivern és fora. Si la Candelera riu, el fred és viu." which means "If Candlemas cries, the winter is out. If Candlemas laughs, the cold is alive". This sums it up, if it rains on February 2nd it's believed to be a sign that winter is ending. If it's sunny, winter will still go on.

Candlemas is also the day that people in the USA and Canada hold "Groundhog Day", where a groundhog (a rodent animal) is said to predict the same.

Some mountain parts of Europe also remember this date as the day where bears wake up from their hibernation, and many of these places have some festivity about it. In Northern Catalonia, we have the Bear Festivity (Festa de l'Os). In this ancient festivity, which is still done nowadays, some people from the town dress up as bears, while others get all dirty and accompany him running through the town, shouting, whistling and playing music. Others dress up as hunters and run after them. It represents nature waking up from the winter rest, but also the danger that comes with it.

The festivity ends when the hunters bring the bear to the town centre and take off his bear skin, turning him into a human. This represents the victory of humans over nature, but scholars also point that it could come from an ancient myth from the Pyrenees according to which humans evolved from bears (for reference, we don't have apes nor monkeys in this part of the world).

Dumb fanfic idea that i'll never write but need to put out into the world:

Miraculous Masked Singer AU: I basically have 2 of these brainbugs so im putting them both into the world cause i sure am not writing them: V1: Gabriel Did it. In an attempt to further spread Adriens' brand recognition (and gain easy access to people getting frustrated at host Alec Cataldi) , Gabriel has signed Adrien up for the French Masked Singer. (judged by Clara, Jagged, Major Bourgouis and Anarka in this AU). The problem? The judges are horribly convinced its CHAT in the costume and he needs to figure a way to prevent this from becoming the wrong type of unmasking (his roles in Animaestro, Frightninggale and his clues referencing "an ironic aversion to feathers" are not helping him in this). V2: Intentional Reveal: In a post-butterfly world, the heroes can finally retire. Adriens civilian life is terrible because the world knows about his dad, his career is shambles and after a private reveal with Maribug, safe in the knowledge that paris no longer needs its heroes they agree to a cunning plan/prank of a lifetime: Chat Noir will go on the Parisian Masked Singer (Judged in this AU by Luka, Nino, Chloe and Jagged after their music careers took off during the timeskip) to become the worlds first double unmasking. (this time the clues would also involve ring-references) Im thinking either way, Adrien gets songs from Atomic Kitten, Pussycat Girls, Cat Stevens that sort of thing. But in AU 1 its digging his grave and in AU 2 he's doing it deliberately (between his 2 unmaskings, he also sings Right Said Fred's "im too sexy" because he cant resist the "turn on the catwalk" line as a final clue) In V2, im also thinking Ladybug testified about Aspik, which means he's legally considered innocent ("if he was working with hawkmoth, we'd have lost during Desperada. have you WATCHED groundhog day?) he's still sus in the eyes of the public

Phil Connors - Fortnight

I was listening to this song a few weeks ago and realised how Phil coded a lot of the lyrics are. For example: ‘All my mornings are Mondays stuck in an endless February.’ Being stuck in February is literally the whole plot for Phil. There are also a few references to the weather which works for the weatherman. It also links to the time loop resetting each say which is seen in the lyric ‘The effects were temporary.’

Rita Hanson - Multiple songs

I was struggling to think of one song that matched Rita because she’s such a great character. At first I was thinking of Illicit Affairs due to the lyric, ‘Don’t call me kid.’ But that was the only line that applied to her. The Prophecy also works as she talks about how in One Day that she does want a relationship of her own and lyrics such as “Don’t want money, just someone who wants my company.” I also thought of Mad Woman due to how she’s treated by Phil (pre-loop) due to her being a woman. But that one also didn’t really work fully so I think there isn’t a concrete song for her.

Nancy Taylor - The Archer

Side note: I love Nancy so much, her song and the way her character is portrayed means so much to me I love her. For her, I chose the Archer because it’s such a nice song and I really enjoy it. And the lyrics do fit with her character I think. ‘I never grew up, it’s getting so old.’ Which links with how her character is linked with high school/younger things. ‘I say I don’t want that but what if I do.’ I think this parallels some lines in Playing Nancy where she says ‘Who am I to dream of better?’ She doesn’t like the person she plays but she also knows that she’s in a good position compared to other people. And the final line (even though I have so much to say) is ‘Who could ever leave me, but who could stay?” which links with how Phil and presumably other men leave her after using her.

Gus and Ralph - Getaway Car

I feel like the reasons for this are obvious but I will still explain myself. ‘You weren’t thinking, and I was just drinking.’ which I think clearly encapsulates the scene with those two. ‘There were sirens in the beat of your heart.’ Aka the police chase.

Ned Ryerson - Sad Beautiful Tragic

This song is a break up song but I do think this can link to his wife. ‘Words how little they mean when you’re a little too late.’ this links to Ned and also the theme of the show to enjoy each day as much as you can, and that includes the people around you. ‘Your face in a locket.’ Ned keeps pictures of his wife in his wallet which is quite similar. ‘For the life of us we can’t get back.’ Ned talks about death in Night Will Come and I think this links to the permanence and inevitably of death that is talked about in that song.

In the series finale, Angel reveals that his questionable moral behavior has been part of a bigger plan: to destroy The Circle of the Black Thorn and show the Senior Partners that the power of good can still make a difference. Wesley struggles with helping Illyria adapt to the world, scolding her for her attempts to take on Fred's form. As Gunn continues his quest of self-discovery, Lorne becomes more aware of the lack of happiness in the world. Harmony attempts to seduce Marcus Hamilton for information, Lindsey makes an important decision regarding his alliance, and Eve continues to deal with being mortal. As Spike comes closer to understanding the nature of heroism, Angel pays a visit to the one person he truly loves. On Angel's bidding, the gang goes out and spends each day as if it were their last...

The main characters spend the episode doing what they want to do most, in what may well be their last day on Earth. There's so much great full-circle/character stuff, so many emotional moments, and then there's the actual event, the Apocalypse, the reckoning the season, the show built up to. And they only show part of it. The episode doesn't end after the big battle, it ends right before it. And that sounds infuriating, but it's such a great way to end a show that's all about fighting the Good Fight and never stopping to, a show about how there never comes a singular point where you've achieved redemption because it's a continuous process, becoming better day by day, a show on people who never give up and keep going even in the face of Hell itself. It's the best finale I could think of. Also, "Would you like me to lie to you now?" makes me cry no matter how many times I rewatch it.

Xena: Warrior Princess: 3.02 Been There, Done That

Xena lives again and again the same day, until she finds the way to stop a carnage. It seems that Gabrielle leaves some strange love marks on Xena's neck. The main characters die a few times: Xena once, Gabrielle a pair of times, Joxer at least thrice (once by Xena's Chakram).

Xena's take on Groundhog Day meets Romeo & Juliet. There are so many great episodes of Xena, but this one is a charming standalone that features a lot of humor, pathos, and a grand display of Xena's many skills

I don’t understand what they want to achieve, I understand they are shifting attention to their future racer and that’s understandable, but you don’t have to put on this whole show? The key difference between Carlos and Lewis is that Lewis chose to walk, Carlos was fired. The energy is different. Carlos doesn’t have a team to go to and acting anything less than like a good team player reduces his hireability, though his PR team is thoroughly shooting themselves in the leg by continuing to leak his offers. I would put money down it was his team that leaked the Lewis news in the first place, they have more holes in them than a sieve someone took a shotgun too. But I digress.

The team are stuck in a rock and a hard place and at the head of it making them remain there is Toto. Every third word from him is more and more confusion and water muddying about who’s going to place in the seat. It makes both George and Lewis look shit, and fires up their bases to continue the belief that their drivers are being ignored or demeaned. The car being shit means everyone is pointing fingers at who’s at fault, the drivers are frustrated, the media is hounding them — the fact I have five different quotes about George saying Lewis is the teammate he wants shows you how much he’s been asked. The fans are frustrated their drivers are frustrated and the small minority who think they can shout their way to a better car are going to yell like their lives depend on it.

This is the shit hand. I wouldn’t know how to manage that on a good day, let alone week in week out confusion about where you will place each race, the monetary commitments to sponsors, protecting your drivers privacy while getting content- there’s a reason mick and fred are the ones rolling around on the floor doing tiktoks not george and Lewis— it’s their job to manage this but it doesn’t make it easy.

And they are fumbling the shit out of it. There’s so many stupid mistakes like the idiotic podium tweets, the bad blocking choices, the focus on mechanics rather than posting about drivers and behind the scenes people want to see. Just today we got Lewis bullying the garage for their song choices, and the groundhog video, they clearly have sweet content to post they just refuse to do it for some reason.

But at the end of all of this it’s fucking twitter, people are spending far, far too much time obsessing over it. The drivers don’t care about what the fucking merc socials are posting, we have to accept that. People cling to it because it’s the closest link we have to them and it ends up representing the voice people put to Mercedes, but Dan paddock or whoever the fucks running the twitter these days has 0 say in the management choices of merc as a whole, it’s just some admin who’s at work. You can’t use the socials as a direct informant on how merc is managing its drivers because that’s just not how it works.

And please (not you specifically but in general) stop counting social media posts. I haven’t met a person who does who is happy but I’ve sure met plenty who let it drive them fucking insane. And I’m talking the George fans who used to cry that they didn’t post enough about him every week- the irony is astounding.

That’s all I have to say about merc socials anymore honestly, I just don’t think it matters. You’re talking to the guy they posted art without credit from once, I know they fumble shit on the reg. Unless they start posting unrelenting pride tweets or shit like Hamrussy again, they’re not gonna be doing what I want anyway

Boxwood Winter

Folks around here have taken to calling it the “Boxwood Winter.” Named for that fabled Dec. 23, 2022 day when we were all waiting for Santa Claus and an artic blast flew in instead dropping the temperatures 50 degree in twelve hours.Heavy winds. Sub-zero readings. Frozen rain. Death or serious injuries to our all too familiar boxwoods. Millions of them across the Midwest and Upper South unable to deal with such Christmas wind shear. More than 200 cultivars. The landscaper’s best friend. Burned, bent and broken.Even now in July you can still see the injured in borders everywhere. Banks. Schools. Churches. Fast-food drive-ins. Shopping centers. Worst of all are the front yards of optimists who still believe those sickly, yellow-brown patches can be resuscitated. Just give them some time.Ho. Ho. Ho. Looking into the battered heart of a fading boxwoodI gave up about a month ago. At first I was leaning toward trying to save the minimally damaged, figuring I could live with some dead spots in a broad landscape – and maybe they still might pull off a Lazarus. Then I thought: “What the hell, I’m already 80. How much wait time do I have left?”We dug out all 42 of our boxwoods in all sizes, shapes and ages, and not all of them injured. It was an off-with-all-their-heads moment. I did not want to replace those boxwoods with boxwoods, thinking, with global warming evidence from around the world sitting right in our laps, I didn’t want to go through this again. The first 22 to go were in an area called “Janet’s Garden,” a tidy, well-manicured circle of horticultural charm in our eight acres of random chaos. Those dwarf boxwoods – planted about 20 years ago – had tightly surrounded the base of a bubbling fountain; their placement useful, functional but, OK, a little boring.I didn’t fully figure how dull until I began looking for very-winter-hardy replacements. When in doubt, as we plant experts say, GOOGLE it up, and here came under “winter-tough, low growing shrubs” your Aronia melanocarpa ‘Ground Hog.’ Aronia ‘Groundhog’ and red cardinal flowersGround Hog. Great name for a low shrub happy in dirt. It was advertised as coming with white flowers and shiny green leaves that turned shades of red and orange in fall. Probably not one to be found at the base of a fountain at Longwood Gardens. Yet an aggressive grower, sure to need constant pruning, but totally hardy.And different.Once the new ground hogs were in hand our 22 wounded box woods were replaced in about six hours.And forgotten.Next to go were three vertical boxwoods and five rounded ones just out the side door. They had been growing in what’s become too much shade. They had blocked off our view of a floriferous side yard. One of them was pretty much a dead yellow. Feisty tuberous begoniasTheir removal opened up the area, providing space for the planting of some feisty begonias while allowing (mandating) the removal of a tall skinny cryptomeria. The boxwood dismissal also allowed for the resurrection of a small, raised-bed rock garden I had forgotten was even there.What a difference. Light. Air. Visibility. Vision. Feisty begonias. Renewed rock garden. Thirty boxwoods down and out and twelve to go. This was all beginning to make sense.The next six boxwoods out were along the sidewalk leading to the driveway. I don’t even remember why I planted them, Maybe because real gardeners are always planting boxwoods along sidewalks.The plants had become tall, gawky and a pain-in-the-aesthetic. It soon became apparent they had been covering up a view of our weeping redbud, a variegated viburnum and a beautiful day lily named for an old gardening buddy of many Louisville-area people, Fred Wiche.Boxwoods gone. Removed. Composted. Welcome home Fred. Their displacement also opened up more room for a beautiful arbor with a flowering vine hiding behind the boxwoods. ‘Fred Wiche’ daylily. Many years ago I lined that sidewalk leading to the porch with boxwoods because that’s what real gardeners did. After that I came across a wonderful arborvitae, ‘Morgan’, with alleged purple-bonze-orange color while topping out at three-to-four tall.Loved the color but ‘Morgan’ did not get the height memo.My hope was the green boxwoods would shine closer to the front porch sidewalk, the shorter Morgans partnering beside them. Fast-forward twenty years. The boxwoods and Morgans are all at least six-to-eight feet tall. We could no longer see the front porch, which, incidentally, was fronted by deep green hostas at least 75 years old offering beautiful blue flowers on three-foot scapes. All lost in our landscape.Janet was thinking that we have enough gardens crammed around the house. Let’s give our porch some space, a view of its own from inside out. The same for visitors coming in from out. Janet and Bob Hill have been married for 60 years and gardened in their Utica, Indiana garden for 48 years. The durable Hosta ventricosa came with the place.Following a brief discussion, and a guy with a chain-saw, all arborvitaes and boxwoods bit the dust in about 15 minutes, opening our porch to that needed space, history and hosta in no particular order. So all 42 of our boxwoods are now gone. Replaced by things and spaces new, different and better. No counseling required. No Boxwood Winter melancholy. Just moving on. At 80. It’s called gardening.
