Gift giving is a feature of Saturnalia - the poet Martial wrote a series of epigrams to accompany a range of gifts including lamps, hair pins, lyres, flutes, writing equipment and so on.

"Quoid tibi decembri sense, quo volant mappae, gracilesque ligulae cereique chartaeque et acuta senibus testa cum Damascenis, praeter libellos vernualas nihil misi. Odi dolosas munerum et malas artes".

"It’s December, when gifts speed to and fro - napkins, slender spoons, candles, writing-paper, a jar of wrinkly damsons and I have sent nothing but my little home-grown books. I hate the sly and wicked ploys of present-giving"

Dar agasallos es unha característica de Saturnalia: o poeta Marcial escribiu unha serie de epigramas para acompañar unha variedade de agasallos, incluíndo lámpadas, forquillas, liras, frautas, equipos de escritura, etc.

"É Decembro, cando os agasallos volan de un lado a outro: servilletas, culleres finas, velas, papel de escribir, un frasco de engurrados ameixas damascenas, pero eu non enviei máis que os meus pequenos libros. Odio os regalos enganosos e as malas artes".
