Frau Perchta wasn’t always the spooky witch that roamed the Bavarian countryside during midwinter to slit the bellies of misbehaving children. When she was a little girl, Mädchen Perchta was quite jolly and charming. She possessed a magical pinecone that granted people’s needs especially during the harsh winters. However, envious children desired the pinecone for themselves and stole it away from her. In the ruckus, the pinecone shattered into a million pieces and pierced their bellies. Mädchen Perchta vowed ever since to retrieve all the pieces of the pinecone and restore its power by opening up the bellies of every lying, stealing, cheating, disobedient and cruel children.
