The Ngarrbek is not your ordinary echidna. They may look similar, but the mystical Ngarrbek is magical, drawing the ancient powers of Ioran. However, Ioran through the centuries has degraded into a wasteland no longer the legendary land of overflowing bounty. The Ngarrbek thrives by burrowing deep into trash mounds and feeding on the toxins. If there are enough Ngarrbek to clean up the landfills, there is still hope to revive Ioran. It started a month ago while Uncle Tim was busy arranging the chairs at the diner, his wife Aunt Martha screamed: “Honey! Ever since Mount Daikon was decimated by a volcanic eruption, Maragibo was forced to roam the streets of the nearby village Hana. As a Karasu-Tengu, he appears as a cross between a crow and a human – with unusually beak-like noses, and huge arms that look like wings even though they're not. He has lost all of his celestial powers which he sources from the holy mountain. Because of this, he is unable to completely transform into a full crow nor a full human. He is forced to seduce naïve virgin girls and absorb their pure energy just to sustain his damned existence. A chimera is a creature that is bits and pieces of other animals mashed together into a new horrible fantasy, something thought to be impossible in real life that only exists in one’s imagination. When Mathilda finally arrived at the Altar of Sisherin, a mystical place that can materialize any person’s dream or idea, she made a terrible mistake of having her thoughts wander back her childhood memories. Instead of wishing for her husband back, who recently passed away due to a mysterious illness, her mind conjured the images of Mikera, a chimera composed of a horned beast with wings of a bat and octopus tentacles for legs – which she drew incessantly in her sketchbooks to comfort herself as an abandoned child. First time to work on a Creatuanary series, and I must say it was fun exploring this monochrome style (which I chose more for time economy, but nevertheless a great practice for quick conceptual sketching) and learning more about creatures from various cultures and mythologies. The Oleo Scincoides (or simply “Oil Skinks”) are commonly found wallowing in oil spills in abandoned pumpjacks in Nevada. They’re not reptiles really, so calling them skinks is a misnomer. No one actually knows where they came from. Aliens? Ancient creatures awakened from eons of slumber? But ever since they appeared coming out from an exploded pipeline, the local oil industry was destroyed. No one knew how to deal with them, as they seem indestructible with conventional weapons. Any attempt of killing one will only result in a suicidal blaze. Who knows? Maybe these oil skinks also live underneath other oil fields and it’s just a matter of time until they get awakened too.
