I’m about to go on a rant, ya’ll……
I’m Scott wants to punch a dangerous civilian who endangered the lives of his little brothers mad and FRUSTRATED!!
Where do I even begin? This week has been a shit show – excuse the language.
Let’s start with my post from earlier in the week about my current symptoms and unknown possible health issue. I called the doctor Monday, and the soonest they could squeeze me in was Tuesday afternoon. Cool, I get it with covid so bad in our area. See the doctor, and she does seem concerned but isn’t confident about what could be causing my symptoms. She checks my feet for any circulation issues – all good there. She checks my heart, lungs, blood pressure, etc., and all seems all okay. So, she orders several blood tests, which are done that same day. Fast forward to today, two days later, and I’m super frustrated. I get that healthcare is overrun due to the pandemic. I’m deeply TRYING to be patient and understanding, BUT why have I not been contacted about anything? No course of action or correction. Just radio silence. Especially when I was told I would be called yesterday. I can see the results have been processed via my online healthcare portal. So, I know the tests are done. Just waiting on someone to call me on what those results are and mean.
Next
I received a call late Monday night from my bank's fraud department that someone attempted to charge almost $200 on my debit. NOT TODAY, SIR! I closed out my debit card and have to order a new one. It just goes to prove fraudsters can even attack bankers! I pay almost everything via debit, so this should be fun making sure everything gets paid while I’m without a debit card.
What’s my next thing…
COVID-19 wrecking havoc!
As I mentioned, covid is horrendous in my area. Hospitals are full and positive tests are very high. How does that affect me directly?
Before I get to the punchline, let me lay it out. My boss was exposed to a positive individual on Saturday, immediately forcing her into mandatory quarantine for 14 days. We found this news out on Monday. Due to the weekend and a vacation day, her exposure doesn’t directly affect us, thankfully.
Here comes Tuesday, and I am effectively put in charge due to my tenue, experience, and natural leadership skills. I got this no big deal, even though my official title is NOT any sort of manager.
Receive a call one of my coworkers isn’t feeling well and is exhibiting covid-19 symptoms. GREAT, he has to stay home and get tested. Now we are down 2 members but wait, THERE’S MORE! We have to keep our other part-timer away from the rest of our team because she wasn’t around said possible new covid-19 employee. We are now down 3 team members.
Here comes Thursday(today), and we have our 3 members still out (2 of which are awaiting their coronavirus test results), and another coworker has vacation preplanned to start. We are down 4 team members, leaving 3 of us left in our department. That means no lunches, no time to yourself, it’s the 3rd of the month, and in banking, it means insanity.
PUNCHLINE TIME: BOTH TEAM MEMBERS TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID
We were told we have one hour to close the branch on the busiest day of the week, with no staff and a pile of work to do before we had to be sent home to quarantine. If I were wearing a monitor, my heart rate and blood pressure would’ve indicated a stroke/heart attack at the same time.
I’m exhausted….
I’m frustrated….
I’m without a debit card when I have to be quarantined for days and can’t go anywhere. Which means I can’t order groceries delivered. I have next to nothing at home…
I’m mad because I haven’t seen my niece in over a month and now have to cancel our weekend get-together due to my quarantine. She will be heartbroken.
I’m ready to punch a wall…
I
AM
DONE
If you have followed along on this long freaking rant, I applaud you and love you for it. I hope my stressed out quakey personality shined through on this post and made you chuckle because my laugh is hysterical right now.
I’m sorry I’m so whiney….
Also, @misssquidtracy, if I stay healthy enough and keep my sanity, I hope you’re ready for my quarantine daily updates again! The earliest I’m allowed to return to work pending changes in my health is December 15th.

I’m going to throw this under a cut, it’s mostly just personal stuff and idk. I don’t care who reads it particularly but also I think it’s nice to put rambles under the jump cut.
I recognize I SHOULD reach out to my rabbi (not today, not right before shabbat, but in general just to talk because I need to talk) and I SHOULD find a therapist to talk to and I SHOULD do a lot of things but actually my brain is just a merry-go-round of “I’m okay, but I’m not? Things are okay, but they are bad actually?” i should be journaling in my real deal journal! but i’m not?
I didn’t have my adderall refilled for a month and now i’m back on it again and am a little jumpy (this will usually settle away after a day or two). the med tech asked how i was doing with my anxiety and depression and it’s surreal to be like “oh my normal baseline clinical anxiety and depression are fine, it’s the situational part that is out of control” and try to have that...be understandable lol.
I keep telling myself I, personally, am okay. I am secure in ways I wasn’t before b’’h. I am doing better. a LOT better. i recognize this. I feel like I have been...not able to engage as Jewishly as I really want which is upsetting to me. I’m not sure what to re-focus on doing so that I am engaged again.
but also simultaneously, while I the individual am okay, there is a lot that is not okay that makes me...less okay? not just the world in general, but my little brother (19 yo) has been lying to family for months about various things (and usually gets caught out) for MONTHS.
last fall he was supposed to be starting community college, he had a full time(!) job and I was so so proud. But then it began to unravel. He quit his job (partly because they fired his friend, and partly because they were disorganized and had no one to train him to do his job apparently?). Then without telling anyone right before the pandemic hit, he dropped out of school. (not even online classes, just dropped out totally. and lied.)
then he started claiming he was dating this girl he met online (which is not bad PER SE) but she is maybe 16?? too young!!! at some point he took himself to the hospital psych ward, which is fine, he’s allowed to do that and get help if he needs. and then after midnight on my mother’s birthday in april he asked if he could just “Get out of the house” for the night and rent a hotel room “nearby”. my mom said okay, and let him borrow her truck. there’s many details missing here like our cousin M found out about his real plan and tried to stop him, told her dad, who tried to warn my mom i guess, who knows. well, come to find out that his “nearbye was not in the same STATE even. He ended up flipping her truck in NEW MEXICO. he was fine, but he totaled her truck.
mom gets new truck per insurance payout. brother is fine. except last weekend(?) my mom texts me asking if I heard from my brother, the answer was no. apparently he stole $4,500 from my grandparents by going to the atm with my nana’s debit card. when she called the bank to report fraud, she had to keep calling back for DAYS. she cried. my brother said nothing. she of course, filed a police report because an atm withdrawal doesn’t look like a fraud case, it looks like spending your own money. but once the police report is on file, the bank pulled the atm video records. and they have my brother on tape.
so he committed a felony on tape (thinking I guess, that the bank would obviously just pay it back to my grandparents, all this money they saved and saved to replace furniture and make home repairs, they are broke, literally bankrupt.) and then I had to spend the weekend convincing my mother that davka even people caught red handed should demand to speak with legal counsel. (she was very “he is taking responsibility for this!!!” oh sure, but he still needs a lawyer.)
anyways my grandparents kicked him out (rightfully so they fed and housed him for most of his life and he steals nearly 5,000??? apparently he is claiming he owed the money to drug dealers (if true, he’s an absolute radish brain. his mother works for the local courts, his grandfather used to be a prison guard, his uncle worked gang/drugs task force for the local police, like...i’m the first one who didn’t even ATTEMPT ROTC or law enforcement at some point)
the last updates i have are: 1.) the local PD isn’t jailing anyone for non-violent crime right now due to COVID, as long as my brother turned himself in which is why i told my mother he needs a lawyer 2.) he’ll probably be able to vote again in our state after time served or like...parole or who knows what but still, of course he gets likely charged with a felony before his first election, bc my grandparents will probably need to pursue this to get any money back 3.) my mom is staying with him in a hotel, and they’re hoping to get him into a shelter bc ofc he QUIT HIS JOB and my grandparents RIGHTFULLY kicked him out for theft. and he has nowhere to go. even if i wasn’t across the country, I can’t take a literal bank theft/fraud criminal in my home because I work for a Bank. My uncle can’t take him, he’s a cop. our other uncle lives in the side-house at my grandparent’s. Our dad is in Mexico, and you can’t leave the country if you don’t have a passport, which my brother doesn’t.
I’m furious at him and furious at my mother who honestly, was enabling some of his behavior in ways I would’ve never EVER been allowed to do as a kid.
I want to scream. uuuuughhhhhhh. I told my mother MONTHS ago he was out of line and I wouldn’t have gotten as far as XYZ but no, grand theft auto of her truck wasn’t enough she waits until he commits theft related to drugs. he is NINETEEN.

(13/13) Now on to the new mission (which is about to be old real quick sorry 😭 I’ll try to get better at replying in a timely manner). How about Adore U, Mansae, Pretty U, Very Nice, Clap, and Call Call Call? I hope you’re having a good week so far! ❤️
Omg don't even worry about it!!! look at how long it took me to finish answering all of these (I'm so sorry, I had a busy week and totally forgot that I didn't finish answering this last one!!)
Okay, so
Adore U: What’s your favorite aesthetic?
Hmmm I like lots of different aesthetics, one that I really appreciate is cute but also i'll-fuck-you-up vibes? lmao. Like wearing my leather jacket with a cute skirt and a bow or when I have my nails done all pretty and I'm cleaning them out with my pocket knife, lol. I also like listening to loud/heavy/aggressive/rock/punk/rap things like that in my headphones while I'm knitting or crocheteting because I find the idea of people seeing this tiny girl knitting a sweater and being like 'I wonder what she's listening to?' And it's like, secretly Day6, or Dreamcatcher, or MCR, or something very humorous 😂😂😂
Mansae: What is something you really want right now?
Other than a government that doesn't make me feel more and more frustrated and hopeless about the future every day I wake up? Haha. Ha...
Okay on a less melodramatic note, I used to have a debit account that I opened at a bank in the town I went to college in, but since I'll no longer be living in that town obviously I closed the account before I left. And so now the only card I have in my wallet is one that's attached to an account that's in my dad's name (he gave it to me for gas when I started driving so I wouldn't have to worry about carrying cash on me for gas, and I've been the only one who uses it since then) and I do have cash, and most of the time I pat for things in cash but when it comes to buying things online *cough*likekpopalbums*cough* you need a card to pay for that... and the only card I have in my wallet is my 'gas card' since I closed my debit account when I moved back home... so whatever I use that card for my dad can see because that account is still under his name, and I mean I have the cash for it in my own savings it's just the the actual online transaction requires a card and currently the only card I have is to an account he can see... 👀
so I really need to set up a new debit account at the bank in my hometown so that I can have a card that I can use to spend my money without my dad knowing about all of my purchases
And so that he doesn't get emails like "we think that this $140 charge is probably fraud" and then me having to be like "haha no, that's your disappointment of a daughter trying to buy kpop albums 😅" and having to explain to him why on God's green earth I am Like This™ ahdhsksagdhskdjdj
Tl;Dr: I wanna set up a new debit account so that I'll be able to spend (my own) money without my dad knowing about the things I buy 😅
Pretty U: If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
Hmmm, I've never thought about writing a book 🤔 I do write poetry (sometimes, when I feel like I have a good idea) so maybe a book of poetry? Although when I took a poetry workshop class in college we had to complete a portfolio to submit at the end of the semester so I had to have like, 18 poems that I was happy with written by the end of the semester to put in a booklet, and that was a little challenging for me because I'm a chronic procrastinator and a lazy perfectionist... 👀 so it might be a struggle for me to write a whole book of poems and be happy enough with it to get it published, lol 😂
Very Nice: What has made you happy recently?
My sister moved out in May and has been living in a house near her college with some of her sorority sisters this summer (cause that's where they're gonna live during the school year) so I haven't really seen her much at all for a while, aside from short visits, usually with her boyfriend tagging along (and I like him! He's very sweet, I don't mind when he comes home with her, it's just that I haven't really had much time spent with just Maren and my parents in a really long time), but we're going on a little mini-family trip to Wisconsin this week so I'm gonna get to spend some time with her and that makes me happy :)
(Also my favorite beer is only sold in Wisconsin so that's also an extra bonus of this trip... 👀👀👀 lol)
Clap: What’s the most recent show you’ve binge watched?
I'm currently binge watching Touch Your Heart and it's soooo good!!!
The last thing I fully finished bingeing was Strangers From Hell/Hell is Other People..... so that's, a very abrupt turn around 😂😂😂
Other than kdramas my mom and I recently finished bingeing Parks and Rec together! Haha
Call Call Call!: What is the last meme you saved on your phone?
This probably doesn't count as a meme, but it is my most recently saved pick and dear Lord is it relatable:
Tumblr media
Lmao,
This is my most recent meme, and I think by now I've gone on enough tangents that you're probably well aware of my tendency to overshare akdhdlskd:
Tumblr media
#relatable
I'm so sorry that I blanked on this!!! How about you? (except the meme one obviously, unless you wanna describe it I guess?? lmao, up to you 🤷) I hope that you've been doing well!!! 💗

And the tucked-in fancy blouse streak continues!  I don’t know how I’m going to go back to my normal clothes next week :(  I want to wear these new blouses every day forever more!
As soon as I got home last night Kevin asked about the bird feeder and immediately proceeded to put it up!  Adorable!  Unfortunately, we don’t have bird seed yet so it’s not as fun as it will be soon!  I might hit up the grocery store after work purely to get some.
As I was in the process of getting dinner going I got a text and email at the same time from my bank alerting me to a potential fraudulent charge on my debit card.  The email showed two of my recent transactions from the last two days as well as two transactions for a computer software store in San Francisco for $1,700 and $118.  I responded “NO” to the text letting them know I didn’t just try to purchase something from SF and then I immediately got a call asking me to proceed in English or Spanish.  The weird thing was that both the email and the phone call kept using my maiden name when I know for a fact I updated my name with my bank.  I’m freaking out and run upstairs to talk with Kevin about this as I get another call.  He tells me to hang up, login to my bank online and call the fraud number there.  I do so and they say that nothing has shown that I have any potentially fraudulent charges and they put a note in my account indicating what happened to me.  During this time I got two more calls that I promptly ignored.  SO SCARY.  I used my card last night and it wasn’t declined so I guess I’m good to go from here?  I feel stupid for responding to the text but at least I didn’t proceed with the phone call and give out any sensitive information.
After the cardio my heart experienced from this scam bullshit I continued to make dinner then had to race to change and head out the door to volleyball.  We ended up losing all three games and the team we played against really wasn’t fun to play - not just because we kept losing but they just weren’t enjoyable.  Since we lost, the season is now over for us!  I’m much sadder about it ending than I expected.  I’ve been slowly improving my skills and haven’t been as nervous as I was even just a few weeks ago.  After the game we went out for drinks and I double fisted it since I wanted a gose but also saw that they were selling Resilience IPA which I HAD to get to support Camp Fire relief even though I don’t like IPAs.  So I was using the gose to chase the IPA which promptly got me pretty drunk!
All in all it was a really good day and I had more energy back which allowed me to clean up the kitchen and my office which made this morning feel so good!  AND I started my day with a quick 10 minute yoga stretch session!  It was fantastic!  I hope to integrate this in more often!
HAPPY FRIDAY, FRIENDS!

A small post debunking some lies going around about Venezuela
Even though I said I wouldn’t I’m putting this here mostly as a reference to use when poeple who honestly want to know bring out the point I’m going to address here. As I said before I’m not really interested in this getting around widely because I already know what Im gonna be told, “you only say that because you support the goverment”, “your sources are biased” “it’s all dicatorship propaganda” blah blah. It’s like a game where the first person who yells “fraud!” wins.
I support the goverment and I don’t particularly hide it (except from my neighbours because I live in a opposition-supported protest zone and it could endanger my own life and my family’s. More on that later). I’m also aware that the goverment supported media is biased toward it but I’m not as naive to think, today in the year 2017, that unbiased media exists. We all have bias depending on our points of view, which are based on the values we choose for ourselves. The media isn’t my only source of information, I also try to analyze political issues according to what I know, to my knowledge of history and world issues and my personal ideology. I have my own criteria and I hope everyone reading has their own too.
That said, what I’m going to say now is based exactly on that: first and foremost my own criteria to understand reality, second, things I have personal experience with, third, the news sources I trust, and last, my political opinion. Feel free to argue against anything I say, as I always try to have a good reason to do so in the first place.
Here it goes, in bullet points according to each lie I’ve seen around:
“The goverment will control national and international media” this lie has been going on probably since 1998 when the coalition that holds the goverment won their first election. It’s a lie that has been widely repeated on national and international media. For years. On the media. Nationally and internationally. 19 years hearing this constantly (on the media) and I’m still waiting for it to become true. It won’t. Because it’s a cheap lie.
“Internet access will be regulated or forbidden” Yeah right I’m sure that’s the reason behind the current goverment launching two satellites (something Venezuela never had previously) and spreading internet access through every corner of the country, plus creating free-access public internet centers, and the reason behind planning yet another satellite and a better platform for mobile internet access. All of that just to forbid it all of sudden. Yet another empty lie.
“The president will stay in control until he dies. No votes. No democracy” Yeah right I’m sure that’s the reason the current goverment has held 21 elections in 18 years. 21 free, direct, secret-vote elections. It’s because we hate democracy. Wait! Not so free! Because yesterday me and my family, and hundreds of people who live in opposition-backed areas had to HIDE the fact that they were voting (political stances in Venezuela can be more or less determined by social class so it’s common to find communities that mostly share the same political opinion). Sorry, but in 18 years the only ones who have ever said that we shouldn’t vote because it’s somehow “anti-democratic” has been the opposition. Of course you’re all free to not participate if you will but under what kind of logic is it democratic to threaten or try to prevent anyone else from participating? And don’t come at me saying it’s lies, I had to go through barricades and pretend I was just trying to take a bus while kids with face-hiding scarves watched every step I took so I could go voting. And I had it easier than many.
“The goverment will seize control of private property” another lie that has been going around since 1998 with literally nothing to back it. 19 years. Still waiting.
“They can force you out of your own home or make you share it with another family they choose” this lie traditionally had another variation of specifying it was a CUBAN family they were gonna get into your home, to give it an extra side dish of xenophobia. As I said, I’m still waiting for it to become true. It won’t because it’s a cheap empty propagandistic lie.
“They can take money out of your bank account and block your international account. No debit or credit cards allowed” The only reason the goverment would have to do anything with your bank accounts is that you committed some kind of crime, and the specifications of that measure are in the law. If there had been cases of people having some kind of problem with this being abused they would have perfect legal means to fight back. They haven’t, because every time a bank account has been intervened it has been due to a very legal reason. And how can you say debit and credit won’t be allowed when state owned banks have created many plans and measures to finance working class people? (ie there’s a debit card plan specifically for young, unemployed people helping them access to credit plans and all that) Also doesn’t the opposition say the goverment is giving away money and chavists are mostly lazy people who don’t work? Which one is it in the end? Another case of manipulation...
“If you speak ill of the goverment you can face prison charges or death penalty” First of all death penalty doesn’t even exist in Venezuela and it won’t in the future, as most venezuelan society doesn’t find it acceptable. We don’t even have life sentence, the worst crimes are punished with a 30 year sentence. Second. This is another lie I have heard for 19 years. In the media. Through live TV. Through the radio. Constantly. Alongside a long string of insults against the President, his wife, his mother, his supporters, etc etc. Yet another lie to finish one long list of pure lies.
That one lie about the ID card being counted as a vote. First, what the heck is this ID card called “carnet de la patria”? Basically it’s a new database of people who have ever used or need to use what the goverment calls “social missions” (misiones sociales), a big array of social, political and economic plans and their respective logistics created to attend specific needs in vulnerable sectors of society. However, since these “missions” have become the goverment’s first go-to option to attend issues directly, this new database has been created to keep a better record of who needs what. It’s optional, it’s free, and it has zero to do with the electoral system. The only reason people were signing up in lists with their new ID numbers yesterday at voting centers is because the *PARTY* (the PSUV, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela) wanted to keep track of whose of their MEMBERS voted. This was also free and no one was obliged to sign up these lists if they didn’t want to. Since one of the most important PSUV activities is fostering electoral participation among its militancy, this list had practical ends. They naturally didn’t ask who you voted for, they only want to know if you went to vote.
There’s another claim about electoral fraud that I’m gonna address in another post because it deserves a more detailed explanation of how our electoral system works.
As I said I’m not particularly interested in this getting around because most people will just blindly reblog anything that feels comfortable enough to accept. This is here mostly as back-up for the personal, one on one conversations I’ve had through chat with people who honestly want to know more, in a situation where specific questions can be faced with specific answers. You can reblog this if you want but as always I recommend coming up with your own opinion and forming your judgement through information and intelligent reflection. If I can somehow help with anything my inbox and chat are open so don’t hesitate to ask ~

Fraud Attempt Using Equifax Data Breach Personal Information and Masquerading as Santander
Tumblr media
I have never seen such a well-engineered fraud attempt, so I thought that I absolutely must share it with my readers for your own protection. I will also note that it was something that I began to actually fall for, but then started to see red flags. I will note the red flags I saw in red and I'll note the red flags that I should have seen but did not, in orange. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Santander and the customer service representative that helped me identify this fraudulent attempt. I was ending my day at work this afternoon when my cell phone rang with a toll-free number (877) 768-2265. I didn't immediately recognize the number, so I figured I'd let it go to voicemail and if it's legit, they'd leave a voicemail. Well, no voicemail. Then I got another call, and another, and another. Seven calls later I finally pick up the phone, "Hello?" "Hello, this is Daniel Morgan from Santander's fraud prevention department, is this Mr. Stadtlander?" the man asks. "It is," I reply. "Is your home address ***************, Massachusetts?" "It is." "Do you have a debit card ending in ****?" "Yes, it's right here in my pocket." "We are showing two charges at a Walmart in Atlanta, Georgia for $280.87. Are you currently in Atlanta sir?" "No, I'm in Boston." "This was registered as an alert in our system and we wanted to reach out to you to resolve this. Do you have a few minutes?" the man says. "Yes of course," I reply. "We would like to close this card and send you out a new one. Let me just confirm that there are no other charges appearing other than these two. One moment." He did not bother to verify any transactions with me. This did not occur to me until later. There is silence as he 'checks his computer'. A moment later he comes back, "Yes. It looks like those are the only attempts. We will need to send out you out a new card just to be safe. Can you verify your mailing address as **************?" "Yes, that's correct." "And the best number to reach you is ***************?" he asked stating my cell phone number. Yes, that is correct." I reply. "And your debit card ends in **** with an expiration of ** of ****?" "That's correct." "Ok, we will send out a new card via Fed-ex and you should have it by tomorrow. Let me just check with my supervisor that we can waive the $15.00 charge for overnighting it." Despite my irritation that someone must have been using my card, my eyebrow raises, why would they charge me to overnight a card if I'm their customer? But, I go along with it. In the meantime, I put him on speaker and google the phone number, which sure enough comes back as Santander's customer service number. I am aware that it is not hard to spoof (fake) a caller ID number, I've demonstrated how to do it myself. But at this point, I'm not on full alert yet. A moment later he comes back on and says, "Ok, no problem. We can have this to you by tomorrow morning. We want to reset the PIN as we aren't allowed to use the default pin. What is your current PIN so we can reset it?" WHAT?! Why on EARTH would they need my PIN? I think to myself. Now my 'bullshit' antennas are quivering like there's a thunderstorm coming. "I'm sorry, I'm not comfortable providing that over the phone," I reply. "I can understand your concerns sir, I assure you that this is just to protect your own confidentiality and ensure that we expedite your card back to you as soon as possible." he begins calmly. "If it helps, I can verify additional personal information." "Ok, thank you," I say. (At this point not believing a word that's coming out of his mouth.) "Can I verify that your date of birth is __________ and your social security number is _________?" repeating back to me my true date of birth and my full social security number. My jaw drops open and my mind is reeling. "Yes, that's correct," I begin, "My PIN is _____." I stated, giving him a fake PIN, then I say "can you hold for just one second, I have an emergency call coming in on the other line from my child's doctor. One second." "Certainly sir, I'll hold and see if I can get this input while I wait," he states and I press the mute button. I get on my work line and dial the same number that called me (which is also on Santander's website) and after a series of verification prompts a woman picks up. "Hello, this is Beth (name changed to protect her identity) from Santander, how can I help you." I take a moment to explain the whole situation to her and I can sense her jaw also dropping open. "What?! We would never ask you for your PIN and we would never give out your social security number." At this point, the man is asking if I'm still there and I ask her to stay on the line and listen in to the speaker call on my cell phone which she graciously agrees to. "Hello, I'm sorry - are you still there?" I ask the man. "Yes. Not a problem Mr. Stadtlander. I entered your PIN into our system and it says that the PIN is incorrect, is there a chance you gave me the wrong PIN?" "No, it was definitely the correct PIN." Then Beth says to me in the other ear, "Ask him for his name and employee ID." "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name, what is your name and employee ID? I'm just taking notes here and want to make sure I get everything." "Certainly sir," he begins, "My name is Daniel Morgan and my employee ID is 45321409." In my other ear, Beth states "Nope. Our employee IDs do not use that format. This is completely made up. Ask him to speak to his supervisor." "I'm sorry, Daniel, can I speak to your supervisor?" I ask. "Certainly sir, one moment." There is a pause of about a minute and then another male voice comes on the phone, "Hello, this Roger with Santander. I understand my colleague attempting to help you by getting a replacement card out to you? How can I help?" "I'm sorry, what was your name?" I ask. "Roger Smear." "Thank you, Roger. I'm sorry can you hold one second, I have an emergency call I am still trying to deal with, just give me two seconds." "Absolutely Mr. Stadtlander." Beth and I are both in shock at the level of detail on this and she recommends that I let him know that I have Santander Fraud Prevention on the other line and see what he does. "Hello, Roger are you still there." "I am, do you have that PIN so that we can help get your card reset?" he asks. "Actually, I just have a question. I have Santander's Fraud Prevention and the local police tied in on the other line and they feel that things aren't adding up. Do you mind if I patch you in?" One second later he hangs up. Now, I thanked Beth graciously and she did some further investigating while I had her on the phone and she was able to determine that there were two attempts to check my account balance using my debit card in Las Vegas a few minutes prior. But it registered as an invalid PIN and did not work. We talked for a bit and she also told me that she had recorded the entire conversation which I was happy for. She then helps me to cancel my card and send out a new one. I am still floored at the level of detail and social engineering that went into this. As best I can figure, they got my debit card number and expiration (most likely from a card scanner in an ATM - it's easy to do) and then matched up my relatively unique name to my information in the Equifax Data Breach (to which I am also one of the millions of victims). Please, I cannot state this enough - be very aware anytime anyone is asking anything from you. Get validation and if there are any doubts, call your bank on the other line and confirm the validity. I would hate to guess how many people fall for this scam. Read the full article

“The Ones We Love Hurt Us Most of All – The Story of My Life Spent With My Abusive & Mentally Ill Senior Mother & Drug Addict” by Lesley Patterson AKA Lady Opaque It’s ironic and incredibly depressing to think that those who are supposed to love us unconditionally, such as our family members, are so quick to flip the script on you just because things didn’t go their way. Hence, they throw a fit, and suddenly you’re the bad guy. Fuck man… So, my own mother turned on me and literally filed false police reports that caused a Detective to need to meet with my husband and me regarding supposed Debit Card Fraud charges. On top of that, she lied her ass off to get a Temporary Protection Order Against Domestic Violence. Despite telling us that it didn’t matter if we showed up to the Hearing for the Extended Protection Order, the Order has awfully affected us. It portrays my husband and me as abusers who get off on the abusive acts that she falsely stated we’ve committed. In all of its forms from physical to verbal to mental and emotional. Whatever my own mother could say and think up, she said because the Courts took her so seriously that we are a threat that they attached a Firearms Addendum to the Retraining Order. Neither my husband or I may own any firearms anymore for the whole period of a year while the Restraining Order is active and in effect. This is just because we weren’t able to get out to where she is as we don’t have our own car or a means of transportation right now to travel there. We all used to live out in the boonies in Fallon, NV., with the whole family, but the situation kept on getting worse and never let up or got any better, so I took the next logical step and did something about it. I was swift and decisive in my actions when I decided to speak with my mother on August 27th, 2019. “And why did she do this,” you may be asking. It’s quite simple, really. She’s played this game ever since the early 1980s when she claimed that I was molested by my father (of which I have no memories of having occurred ). She went the whole 9 yards with him, too. At the end of the ensuing Custody battle, my mom had everyone believing that my father was a pedophile and a deranged, evil man and drug addict. I, in fact, now actually do not think that I was ever even molested by my dad. I genuinely believe that my mom just wanted to get back at him for the issues they had in their relationship. She’s deranged, and it was quite convenient for her to lie so that she could be granted a TPO, which turned into the same thing that we were served with due to her lies, a Restraining Order Against Domestic Violence. Needless to say, I never had a relationship whatsoever with my father or with his side of the family due to my mother’s influence, and now I see why we were treated as the black sheep of the family and continuously scapegoated by family members. It’s because my mother is fucking lying, shameless and horrific bitch that no one, not even her own blood relatives, wants anything to do with. It was hard for me to understand that as a child and a young adult. I knew my mother was mentally ill and on drugs, but I never really saw all of the abuse and tactics for what they indeed were until I’d summoned up the strength and guts to finally leave her to her own devices. It’s all very simple to her. I’m sure; she wants to hurt my husband and me for no longer wishing to live with her after over 17+ years of living together with her constant drama, untreated mental illnesses, and everything else. It compounded with her incessant nit-picking and family fight, causing ways along with her daily wants, needs, and unreasonable and abusive demands. Her behavior and false allegations about and towards my own father drove him to literally insanity. The poor man went bat shit crazy and finally broke down, brought the lawnmower into the old family home, set an accelerated fire with the gasoline inside of it, and prepared to sit down and burn himself alive. I shit you not, this is 100% true! That’s what really happened to him as a result of what my mother had done, she had broken him and permanently damaged his reputation, and he felt there was no going back or moving forward left for him. I find that quite sad… Finally, I think he just wanted relief from the torture, the pain, and the relentless agony and angry depression that he suffered from. Supposedly my dad was Schizophrenic, but I’m not sure I buy that one anymore either. (Straight from the horse’s mouth, if you know what I mean…) My mother is a drug addict and a big drama Llama who enjoys picking and picking at you, slowly eroding your sanity and your calmness until she’s got everyone upset in one way or another. I hadn’t known this had happened, but my own mother tried to turn me against my very own daughter. She had manipulated me into believing that it was her who was the disruptive one and caused all of the household’s problems and fights, but the whole time it was her slithering snake ass. I even put my own daughter on probation and had gotten the law involved with police and everything due to my mother’s tricks and deceit. It wasn’t until very recently that my daughter confided in me how her own grandma used to beat the holy living shit out of her whenever my husband and I left her home with her. I feel terrible about it, and it’s something that I can’t apologize enough for having had happened to her. My mother is a hardcore pain pill addict and takes handfuls of opioids daily. (Not counting how often she runs out early due to her severe abuse and misuse of them.) She was supposed to love me and to want the best for me; to raise me to be someone who succeeds in life, but I got the short end of the stick and, lastly, blatant betrayal. I am honestly shocked that she filed false accusations against us, especially on me. Well, I was blown away at first, but then my husband and my daughter told me that they couldn’t believe that I didn’t see that bullshit coming over a mile away. I felt a bit stupid, because the more I mulled it over privately, the more I knew that they were right. Then again, who would want to believe that their own mother could be so heartless as to use the law along with her tall tales and illegal perjury to harm them in such a retaliatory fashion? No one, that’s who and neither did I. I was thinking the other night, and before my mother had gotten myself and my daughter removed from her custody and put into foster care through DCFS back in 2001. She got in trouble for meth use, pain pill abuse, and charges of blatant Child Neglect at the time. I finally came down to the quite painful and heartbreaking realization that I was so much so not a priority to my own mother that she had us living in motels ever since we moved to the Reno, NV. area in 1997. In case you didn’t know this already when you live only in motels, you are legally considered homeless. My mother made me homeless in 1997 when we left my hometown of Sacramento, CA., to move here to Northern Nevada. Back then, also due to her use of methamphetamines, she had so recklessly not planned the move at all or what we’d do once we got to Reno. This inaction on her part caused us to lose the UHaul we’d used to move, and shortly after that, all of the belongings inside of it as well. Everything I’d ever had my whole entire short life at that point, was auctioned off by the company due to her non-payment. It resulted in that because instead of being an adult and doing the right thing and working with them on payments, she fucked up badly and decided it’d be better to try and hide the Uhaul van that we’d used and parked it in secrecy. She couldn’t even do that well enough because she was so drugged out, and the Uhaul company came and picked up their van within just a few days. I was upset about it for the longest time, about losing everything that I’d ever owned. There was a bag of crank in the Uhaul van, and when my mother did have the opportunity to get a few things out, she opted instead to find the meth. She sent me to school and didn’t allow me to come to get any of my stuff out of the van. I lost literally everything I’d ever loved and many important memories like family photos and keepsakes from passed on relatives. It still makes me literally sick to think about it. My mother is the kind of woman who attracts the biggest loser in town, and it always gets exceedingly violent and then ends terribly. The man she chose was a bigger addict than she was and an awful person. He’d beat her often, even right in front of my then-boyfriend now-husband and me. He then started beating me and attempted to choke me out once, but my husband stopped him from succeeding in his attempt. In retaliation, the man threw my baby kitten out of the second story motel window resulting in what was a white kitten with Grey spots appearing like he was brown. I only found this out because I was pregnant with my daughter and searching everywhere for me kitten whom I thought had escaped somehow from the house. Turns out, Animal Control was called to pick him up because he couldn’t move from the spot where he fell and was injured so severely that he appeared brown. This gave me great heartache as it means he was hurt so badly as to bleed a great deal, and when it dried, it caused him to appear brown in color. My main point of this blog post is that no human being deserves such treatment. No one deserves this kind of abuse, yet sadly it’s committed all over the world, every single day by horrible people who enjoy harming others. It’s terribly ironic that my mother has turned her tactics of abuse onto my husband and to this extent, especially when you consider that we were the ONLY ones who were ever there for her, and this is the thanks that we get? Intimidation, harassment, threats, attempted Criminal charges, and a Restraining Order? Neither my husband nor I have ever once been in trouble with the law, and yet somehow, they believe this cunt who has a pension for pulling these stunts on people to get back at them for decades??? Breaking away from abuse is always a scary endeavor. If you stayed, at least you’d have the surety of knowing how it’s likely going to turn out, but many people really fear change, especially big ones. It took a lot of thought and courage on my behalf to decide that myself and the other members of the family no longer should be treated so abusively and taken advantage of by my mother. I did get away, finally, after many years of relentless maltreatment. Things are starting to get better for us rather quickly now, too. I have a new job, and my husband can finally get the knee surgery that he’s needed for years. My main point here is that there is hope! There are loving, kind people in the world, and you shouldn’t ever give up and stay in an abusive situation because it’s never going to get any better, only much worse. Worse yet, you’ll waste all of the days, months, or years of finding yourself and actually living and enjoying life if you stay with your abuser. It can be done, you can leave, and things can start to improve, it just takes a leap of faith and a bit of work, but you never have to stay in those circumstances, it’s unhealthy and only leads to stress, sickness, and precious time wasted. Work on yourself instead, take the first step and tell yourself right now, make a promise to yourself, that if you’re ever being abused by anyone you love, you’ll leave. The name of the game is to “love thyself” and believe me, you ARE worthy of love, and you ARE worth it! Identity theft in 2020
January 6th 2020,
You know that scene in Futurama where they are trying to scare Fry by saying “Hello and welcome to the world of tomorrow!” and then Bender acts like a crazy killer robot? My 2020 has started just like that. I woke up Jan 1st 2020 at 3pm, because New Year’s Eve is now the one night a year I DJ at our local goth bar, Elysium. I never usually sleep that late. Little did I know that all the bad things had already happened. I texted a couple of people and realized didn’t have mobile service. Huh. There was a system message that said something unusual.. ”SIM Not Provisioned MM#2” Eventually I look up what that means: ”The main reason of Sim not provisioned mm#2 is because your sim isn’t activated or is suspended from the service provider or isn’t picked up by the cell phone. If you just bought a new sim card then you are likely to see this error because you might have to activate your sim. If your sim was working fine and started giving this error then it can mean two things. The first scenario is that the sim card is dead and, therefore, inactive (in case it’s too old). The second scenario is that your sim card was deactivated from your service provider because you asked to transfer your number to a new sim card.” Which is alarming because I was asleep, definitely not buying a new phone or anything like that. I check my bank account. I can’t even login because my account has been restricted. That’s when I check my email, revealing the horrorshow of how they systematically bypassed all my passwords. It’s called SIM Card Cloning or SIM Swap Fraud. Here’s the wikipedia page. Basically, they duplicate your phone’s SIM card (I don’t know how but it doesn’t matter) then they port out, taking your phone number to another carrier and opening an account with them. This automatically closes your phone account, which is why I had no service or ability to call my banks. Now that they have your phone number and you don’t, they use text verification to get into your email, banks, etc... This means your passwords don’t matter, because everything can be reset with verifying through text. You should still keep your passwords strong, but consider the fact that it may not matter once they’ve digitally stolen your phone. And this happens long distance, one of my gmail login attempts was supposedly in Atlanta, Georgia but {March edit} they were using a VPN because all of the fraudulent transactions occurred in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. All in $50 or $100 transactions at Home Depot or Walmart. I’m assuming it was all Visa gift cards that are as good as cash. The extra clever part of this scam was doing it on New Year’s Day when everything is closed, the stores and their tech support, fraud departments. What’s The Damage? I haven’t been able to calculate it yet because access to my bank account is still restricted, although hopefully in the next 24-48 hours... But what I learned through email is that they made a bunch of purchases I guess with my debit card information, AND opened a new credit card. They didn’t get into my PayPal account directly but they did activate Samsung Pay and linked that to my PayPal... which is crazy, to think they don’t even need to get into the PayPal account itself to exploit it with a smartphone. Also, let this sink in, I’m still tallying the damage. The other night I got more unauthorized transactions. I keep saying, dealing with this type of fraud is like battling a hydra... It’s not a one an done situation, it’s overwhelming how much is suddenly and continually compromised, for days on end. It’s been a week and I still haven’t fully recovered. {March edit} The total damage was $1812.26 which is more than every penny I had. It was everything in my savings and debit accounts, plus $550 that was drained later through PayPal after I recovered the money back from the first time. That first 48 hours, I felt so alone, not only because my phone service was dead but because every institution I talked to had not heard of this type of fraud yet... Hello, I’m Chicken Little and the sky is actually falling, I promise. For example, explaining it to PayPal, an account that had not itself been compromised, was a nightmare. I attempted to chat with a helper - "What are the fraudulent transactions?” “There aren’t any, but my identity has been stolen though my phone” “If there are no transactions there’s nothing to report to the fraud department” - Then a day or two later there’s an unauthorized pending deposit from my bank for $50 and another for $500, but the automatic reporting system wouldn’t let me report it as as fraud since it was “MONEY RECEIVED” - Yesterday I figured out how to call them with Skype and we got it sorted. But for the record, Venmo was much easier to lockdown than PayPal so I will be closing my account with them when this is over. {March edit} My PayPal was compromised around this time through SamsungPay. I think even though I had changed everything, it still went through because it must have been a delayed Jan 1st charge from after my accounts had been locked down. I called them and said there’s a pending transaction that is unauthorized. They said they would “try to stop it but have no real power while the transaction is in process” - cooooool thankssss. I called my bank too, but despite all of that the transaction still went through and I had to recover it after the fact. Now that I have you sufficiently freaked out, and you should be, we come to the point of writing about it in my blog... iana’s list of What Saved My Ass / Prevention / Recovery Steps !! Firstly, put together a sort of post-apocalyptic survival kit but for identity theft. I had recently been given a Shell gas card as a gift and that saved me because I had to drive around a lot to sort most of this out in person. Previously I was using Lyft for transport and that is tied to, you know it, PayPal... so if I hadn’t had a car it would have been impossible to do all of this quick recovery. I am so grateful to have a car now. Inspired by that, here’s my fantasy kit that I wish I had Jan 1st:
a gas card
a gift card like the prepaid Visa kind that you can use anywhere and not linked to bank
CDs or analogue music for the car listening to the one disc I had in there while sorting this out was insult to injury!
A PREPAID BURNER PHONE to keep charged up and ready to go in case of emergencies, you just need it to call banks etc while you recover so you don’t need Data (after all, my smartphone still worked on wifi). I found $30 major network unlimited talk & text flip phones at Target and one $20 which I didn’t recognize but would probably still be fine.
A local secondary bank account Gift cards are probably doing the same thing but this saved me. My main bank is based in San Antonio (USAA) but luckily I had a second bank account at UFCU here in Austin. While I didn’t have enough money in it to pay rent or anything, being able to walk in and get new cards made same-day gave me some peace of mind.
A Google Number This isn’t as useful as the burner phone but it did save me this week. I use one for my work number, so luckily I could still text with it from my phone (on wifi) I just couldn’t use it to call anything. But I was able to use it to verify some stuff (not Venmo) with a number that had not been compromised like my main.
Prevention:
PUT A FREEZE ON YOUR CREDIT : I had never heard about this until it was too late. If you freeze your credit, people can’t just sign up for a new credit card in your name. If you want to open a credit card, you still can, you just have to take extra steps to do so.
2-factor Authenticate everything : hopefully there are some options BESIDES texting your main number that allow for extra security. It’s a pain but easier to tolerate than this mess I’m in now.
LIE ON YOUR SECURITY QUESTIONS : Example “What’s your mother’s maiden name? Blue” - Now this one is really hard for me to wrap my head around because the point is to prove you’re you so it feels wrong like lying in court under oath. But the fact is, if they are hacking your identity and you are using facts that are on record somewhere, that information can be stolen too. So lie, and write it down.
Long passwords are better than complicated ones : I had this explained to me by someone in the field. There are 26 letters, but only 10 numbers and even less symbols. Each time you add a letter you are multiplying the possible choices by 26, whereas each time you add a number or a symbol you are only multiplying by 10 or less. Example “ianaspasswordisverylongandhopefullysecureokaybye” is a better password than “iana123pa$$w0rd!” which is like what I used to do. This was a very interesting piece of the puzzle to put together. When I think about it, the more complicated and “random stuff” the password is, the shorter I make it. But if it’s a run-on sentence, it’s super long yet easy to remember. Of course sometimes you’re required to use a number and a symbol, but if you use the maximum amount of letters and minimum amount of symbols and numbers, it should be solid.
Pay for everything online with CREDIT not DEBIT: Ugh, this is going to be a hard one for me to transition to. But basically this makes it easier to recover if your account has been compromised. They drained actual money from my debit account, therefore the bank has to go track down that actual money and it’s a long process to get it back. If it’s a credit card transaction, they just void the transaction from counting against my balance, I simply wouldn’t owe them more than I legitimately owe, but they wouldn’t have to return actual money to me. {April Edit} I just saw Capital One is now offering virtual card numbers. You use a virtual number for online shopping and then your actual card number is never compromised.

March 5th 2020,
In conclusion, I am just now wrapping up this blog because obviously this whole thing has been traumatizing and recovery is a massive work in progress. I wish I had a happy ending for y’all but I’m still cleaning this mess up. My phone is secure, my money is secure... but my credit is going to be royally screwed for some time. My accountant said at least 2 years. I ended up needing extra steps to secure my phone account, btw. They initiated 2 step authentication but I was able to bypass the second step, an 8 digit passcode, with the last 4 digits on my social security number. Get this, when I brought this up to a call center rep, they told me to get a new SSN! As if that’s a thing! Short of being in witness protection or some other person of international interest, the government is not going to issue a new SSN just to prevent my SIM from being compromised again. So I went into the store and brought this up to the manager, fortunately the same person who helped me Jan 2nd, and she was also surprised a 4 digit SSN bypassed everything. She put a priority note onto my account that says in big bold red letters something to the effect of “Do NOT make changes to this customer’s account without them being in-store providing photo ID. this is at the customer’s request” Yeah, you are correct, it is a huge pain in the ass to do stuff now... but it’s locked down. I got so many questions, “Why don’t you just change your phone provider?” and the thing is, it’s not just AT&T. This is a happening across the board and you should be concerned no matter what service you have. At least now I know my account is secure. I now have a complex money funneling system, too. It goes in one account (which I never use online or at gas stations), it gets transferred to another institution and that is the only outbound account for actual cash monies. The outbound account is not linked to the inbound account. Like a canal, only one section of money can get drained and it doesn’t compromise the whole operation. My battle is not over, though. I still have credit reports and the police report to deal with. But I hope this helps you today. Be careful out there, folks!
April 18 2020, post script: Oof, I don’t know if this article will ever really feel finished. I put off posting it because with all the COVID-19 stuff happening, I didn’t want people to panic further or add to unnecessary stress. But after hearing about a few cases of fraud in my friend group, I decided it best to post this sooner rather than later. To ease the impact I’ll be posting something fun right after this one.

“Offshore soccer is for laundering” | Defini …
When the new inspector general of Justice Ricardo Nissen is mentioned the phrase “football is a huge fertile field for liars”, he asks curiously who said it. The appointment of the journalist Dante Panzeri immerses him in the history of sport and especially boxing, of which he remembers memorable fights that he followed through the radio in his childhood. Since taking over the government of Alberto Fernández, he returned to the same position he held between 2003 and 2005 during the presidency of Néstor Kirchner. He says that he will relentlessly control offshore companies that in lucrative activities like soccer often do big business. Over 15 years ago Page 12 He was able to investigate and publish during that stage of Nissen at the IGJ who was the majority partner of Blanquiceleste S.A., the company that Racing managed. It was a billionaire sheikh, the Ethiopian Mohammed Hussein al Amoudi, who through the Elmtree offshore company and associated with another called Bergo Anstalt controlled the rubber stamp at whose head Fernando Marín appeared.
– On April 13, the newspaper Ambito Financiero published an interview with the soccer agent Juan Cruz Oller entitled “The coronavirus is an enormous opportunity for Argentine soccer to open the door to private capital.” Would you agree that S.A. are installed here for that purpose?
–Absolutely not. Also today there are many reasons that totally discourage it. First of all, the world has changed in many things and people discovered after the Macri government the true importance of civil societies and NGOs. That ended with the worshipers of corporations, unless he is an ultra-capitalist.
– With the departure of Mauricio Macri from the government, the chance that sports corporations will be installed disappeared, but tax havens are in good health and many murky operations in football are made from there. How do you see that panorama?
“ I'm going to tell you an anecdote. In 2004 we were convinced that behind the transfers of the soccer players there were many offshore companies involved as intermediaries. Of course there was a huge issue of laundering and we wanted to discover this operation in Argentina. One day I went alone as the inspector general of Justice showing my card and I appeared at the AFA. I was received by attorneys Schmoisman and Meiszner. The latter had been president of Quilmes. I wanted to know who was behind the foreign institutions that appeared behind each player. I couldn't get into that because there were too many topics, but it always gave me the impression that offshore soccer operations is one of the main activities of laundering and opacity. There are many conflicting interests in these types of operations that are disguised.
– How is it understood that offshore companies appear in Argentine soccer when there is no S.A. and the clubs are non-profit civil societies?
– Offshore companies are almost always manifested in the purchase and sale of players and the legal organization of a club does not matter. 20 years or more ago Macri promoted a Sports Public Limited Companies project that was a farce. I participated in the commission that discussed it, but not because I wanted the SAD but because I wanted to participate in a duly interesting project. I am body and soul with civil societies because that is how the country grew and that is how it should be. What happens is that Macri had at that time the interest that any administrator could take care of a club.
– Already as president of the Nation, during his government he promoted the figure of the trust that also has a certain opacity. River approved one that later suspended and raised dust…
–Among the SAD and the appearance of the trust there is an important figure that was management. He was in charge of offshore companies. We attacked that and it is because at the time there were some totally tricks that came to control important clubs in Argentina.
Q: Was Racing the biggest, with Blanquiceleste, Marín and Sheik Mohammed al Amoudi at the head?
– It may be … but going back to the trust is a way to hide the ownership of the assets. It would work well if you entrusted a third party with the administration of assets so that tomorrow, in a time that is normally long, you end up transmitting those assets to your children. But here in Argentina and especially in the Menem era there were economic, corporate and commercial laws that were a presumption of fraud. The bankruptcy law or especially trust law 24,441, which is a very little transparent law, nor the 2015 Civil and Commercial Code helped to make it transparent. Unfortunately it became an instrument of fraud and was never well controlled like offshore companies, despite the fact that offshore companies according to the Civil Code have to be registered in the Public Registry, which was never organized. Now we are organizing it because all this was born opaque and is still opaque.
– Since President Alberto Fernández took office, there were members of his cabinet who said they had come across scorched earth. How did you find the IGJ?
“ Absolutely the same.
“Could you give us an example?”
– Previous savings. The IGJ competition is local, that is, for the city of Buenos Aires, we have no federal competition. At Ahorro, the instructions given over the last four years were to deactivate it and reduce its staff. What was the role of that sector? Put limits on the concessionaires or administrators of savings plans that set the price completely unilaterally. The IGJ did not mess with the quota price formation for four years. In the area of Civil Associations and Foundations, the public good institutions that were linked in some way to Peronism and to others, such as the case of blind trusts or the Gabriela Michetti foundation, were persecuted staunchly. Not at all. They were not even sent inspections, nor a certificate to accompany a balance. They were treated like a king.
– In an interview with this same newspaper in February, you used the noun “crap”, which was found with crap at the IGJ. What was he referring to?
–I do not know, at that moment I got that word but the Inspection did not work. This organism is from 1892 and it was constituted by the abuses that were carried out by corporations. It was called Inspection because it was a group of inspectors, but later the term of Inspection was consecrated. What does inspect mean? It is not filing, especially in the neoliberal times when this was intended to be an archive and that third parties have a place to look for, without any sanction for those who incur in breaches. Control of legal partnerships matters a matter of national interest. And that has not happened in the last four years. Here it was said that Brodsky (the previous inspector) was a man of Angelici or Richarte who was in the AFI. Lots of things were attributed to him but the truth is that Brodsky did not attend to anyone. This was a kind of bunker in which one had to go through three doors. Today this place is completely different. The one who reaches the sixth floor sees me and has a meeting with me. Now it can be denounced, before not because Brodsky did not receive them. This was an appendix to Andrés Ibarra's Ministry of Modernization.
What are you trying to change?
–I started a personal crusade against the offshore, first with Cromañón and then with the Panama Papers. If I process complaints, people will be encouraged to report. If they know there will be a resolution, people will be encouraged. That generates a multiplier effect. Since I arrived I have many more complaints than in all of 2019. People are encouraged because they know that things will come out of here.
–What kind of complaints?
– For example, complaints of misuse of civil societies. Complaints of institutions that had obtained legal status to compete with others where Macrism was interested, giving encouragement to the constitution of a new civil entity that competed with another old civil society. They began to persecute her to withdraw her legal status as happened with the Argentine Sports Confederation, the CAD.
Q: You said that you were going to try to help civil institutions like neighborhood clubs with your resolutions. How?

Voice Phishing Scams Are Getting More Clever
Most of us have been trained to be wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive in emails unexpected, but it’s easy to forget scam artists are constantly dreaming up innovations that put a new shine on old-fashioned telephone-based phishing scams. Think you’re too smart to fall for one? Think again: Even technology experts are getting taken in by some of the more recent schemes (or very nearly).
Matt Haughey is the creator of the community Weblog MetaFilter and a writer at Slack. Haughey banks at a small Portland credit union, and last week he got a call on his mobile phone from an 800-number that matched the number his credit union uses.
Actually, he got three calls from the same number in rapid succession. He ignored the first two, letting them both go to voicemail. But he picked up on the third call, thinking it must be something urgent and important. After all, his credit union had rarely ever called him.
Haughey said he was greeted by a female voice who explained that the credit union had blocked two phony-looking charges in Ohio made to his debit/ATM card. She proceeded to then read him the last four digits of the card that was currently in his wallet. It checked out.
Haughey told the lady that he would need a replacement card immediately because he was about to travel out of state to California. Without missing a beat, the caller said he could keep his card and that the credit union would simply block any future charges that weren’t made in either Oregon or California.
This struck Haughey as a bit off. Why would the bank say they were freezing his card but then say they could keep it open for his upcoming trip? It was the first time the voice inside his head spoke up and said, “Something isn’t right, Matt.” But, he figured, the customer service person at the credit union was trying to be helpful: She was doing him a favor, he reasoned.
The caller then read his entire home address to double check it was the correct destination to send a new card at the conclusion of his trip. Then the caller said she needed to verify his mother’s maiden name. The voice in his head spoke out in protest again, but then banks had asked for this in the past. He provided it.
Next she asked him to verify the three digit security code printed on the back of his card. Once more, the voice of caution in his brain was silenced: He’d given this code out previously in the few times he’d used his card to pay for something over the phone.
Then she asked him for his current card PIN, just so she could apply that same PIN to the new card being mailed out, she assured him. Ding, ding, ding went the alarm bells in his head. Haughey hesitated, then asked the lady to repeat the question. When she did, he gave her the PIN, and she assured him she’d make sure his existing PIN also served as the PIN for his new card.
Haughey said after hanging up he felt fairly certain the entire transaction was legitimate, although the part about her requesting the PIN kept nagging at him.
“I balked at challenging her because everything lined up,” he said in an interview with KrebsOnSecurity. “But when I hung up the phone and told a friend about it, he was like, ‘Oh man, you just got scammed, there’s no way that’s real.'”
Now more concerned, Haughey visited his credit union to make sure his travel arrangements were set. When he began telling the bank employee what had transpired, he could tell by the look on her face that his friend was right.
A review of his account showed that there were indeed two fraudulent charges on his account from earlier that day totaling $3,400, but neither charge was from Ohio. Rather, someone used a counterfeit copy of his debit card to spend more than $2,900 at a Krogers near Atlanta, and to withdraw almost $500 from an ATM in the same area. After the unauthorized charges, he had just $300 remaining in his account.
“People I’ve talked to about this say there’s no way they’d fall for that, but when someone from a trustworthy number calls, says they’re from your small town bank, and sounds incredibly professional, you’d fall for it, too,” Haughey said.
Fraudsters can use a variety of open-source and free tools to fake or “spoof” the number displayed as the caller ID, lending legitimacy to phone phishing schemes. Often, just sprinkling in a little foreknowledge of the target’s personal details — SSNs, dates of birth, addresses and other information that can be purchased for a nominal fee from any one of several underground sites that sell such data — adds enough detail to the call to make it seem legitimate.
A CLOSE CALL
Cabel Sasser is founder of a Mac and iOS software company called Panic Inc. Sasser said he almost got scammed recently after receiving a call that appeared to be the same number as the one displayed on the back of his Wells Fargo ATM card.
“I answered, and a Fraud Department agent said my ATM card has just been used at a Target in Minnesota, was I on vacation?” Sasser recalled in a tweet about the experience.
What Sasser didn’t mentioned in his tweet was that his corporate debit card had just been hit with two instances of fraud: Someone had charged $10,000 worth of metal air ducts to his card. When he disputed the charge, his bank sent a replacement card.
“I used the new card at maybe four places and immediately another fraud charge popped up for like $20,000 in custom bathtubs,” Sasser recalled in an interview with KrebsOnSecurity. “The morning this scam call came in I was spending time trying to figure out who might have lost our card data and was already in that frame of mind when I got the call about fraud on my card.”
And so the card-replacement dance began.
“Is the card in your possession?,” the caller asked. It was. The agent then asked him to read the three-digit CVV code printed on the back of his card.
After verifying the CVV, the agent offered to expedite a replacement, Sasser said. “First he had to read some disclosures. Then he asked me to key in a new PIN. I picked a random PIN and entered it. Verified it again. Then he asked me to key in my current PIN.”
That made Sasser pause. Wouldn’t an actual representative from Wells Fargo’s fraud division already have access to his current PIN?
“It’s just to confirm the change,” the caller told him. “I can’t see what you enter.”
“But…you’re the bank,” he countered. “You have my PIN, and you can see what I enter…”
The caller had a snappy reply for this retort as well.
“Only the IVR [interactive voice response] system can see it,” the caller assured him. “Hey, if it helps, I have all of your account info up…to confirm, the last four digits of your Social Security number are XXXX, right?”
Sure enough, that was correct. But something still seemed off. At this point, Sasser said he told the agent he would call back by dialing the number printed on his ATM card — the same number his mobile phone was already displaying as the source of the call. After doing just that, the representative who answered said there had been no such fraud detected on his account.
“I was just four key presses away from having all my cash drained by someone at an ATM,” Sasser recalled. A visit to the local Wells Fargo branch before his trip confirmed that he’d dodged a bullet.
“The Wells person was super surprised that I bailed out when I did, and said most people are 100 percent taken by this scam,” Sasser said.
HUMAN, ROBOT OR HYBRID?
In Sasser’s case, the scammer was a live person, but some equally convincing voice phishing schemes use a combination of humans and automation. Consider the following vishing attempt, reported to KrebsOnSecurity in August by “Curt,” a longtime reader from Canada.
“I’m both a TD customer and Rogers phone subscriber and just experienced what I consider a very convincing and/or elaborate social engineering/vishing attempt,” Curt wrote. “At 7:46pm I received a call from (647-475-1636) purporting to be from Credit Alert (alertservice.ca) on behalf of TD Canada Trust offering me a free 30-day trial for a credit monitoring service.”
The caller said her name was Jen Hansen, and began the call with what Curt described as “over-the-top courtesy.”
“It sounded like a very well-scripted Customer Service call, where they seem to be trying so hard to please that it seems disingenuous,” Curt recalled. “But honestly it still sounded very much like a real person, not like a text to speech voice which sounds robotic. This sounded VERY natural.”
Ms. Hansen proceeded to tell Curt that TD Bank was offering a credit monitoring service free for one month, and that he could cancel at any time. To enroll, he only needed to confirm his home mailing address.
“I’m mega paranoid (I read krebsonsecurity.com daily) and asked her to tell me what address I had on their file, knowing full well my home address can be found in a variety of ways,” Curt wrote in an email to this author. “She said, ‘One moment while I access that information.'”
After a short pause, a new voice came on the line.
“And here’s where I realized I was finally talking to a real human — a female with a slight French accent — who read me my correct address,” Curt recalled.
After another pause, Ms. Hansen’s voice came back on the line. While she was explaining that part of the package included free antivirus and anti-keylogging software, Curt asked her if he could opt-in to receive his credit reports while opting-out of installing the software.
“I’m sorry, can you repeat that?” the voice identifying itself as Ms. Hansen replied. Curt repeated himself. After another, “I’m sorry, can you repeat that,” Curt asked Ms. Hansen where she was from.
The voice confirmed what was indicated by the number displayed on his caller ID: That she was calling from Barry, Ontario. Trying to throw the robot voice further off-script, Curt asked what the weather was like in Barry, Ontario. Another Long pause. The voice continued describing the offered service.
“I asked again about the weather, and she said, ‘I’m sorry, I don’t have that information. Would you like me to transfer you to someone that does?’ I said yes and again the real person with a French accent started speaking, ignoring my question about the weather and saying that if I’d like to continue with the offer I needed to provide my date of birth. This is when I hung up and immediately called TD Bank.” No one from TD had called him, they assured him.
FULLY AUTOMATED PHONE PHISHING
And then there are the fully-automated voice phishing scams, which can be be equally convincing. Last week I heard from “Jon,” a cybersecurity professional with more than 30 years of experience under his belt (Jon asked to leave his last name out of this story).
Answering a call on his mobile device from a phone number in Missouri, Jon was greeted with the familiar four-note AT&T jingle, followed by a recorded voice saying AT&T was calling to prevent his phone service from being suspended for non-payment.
“It then prompted me to enter my security PIN to be connected to a billing department representative,” Jon said. “My number was originally an AT&T number (it reports as Cingular Wireless) but I have been on T-Mobile for several years, so clearly a scam if I had any doubt. However, I suspect that the average Joe would fall for it.”
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Just as you would never give out personal information if asked to do so via email, never give out any information about yourself in response to an unsolicited phone call.
Phone phishing, like email scams, usually invokes an element of urgency in a bid to get people to let their guard down. If call has you worried that there might be something wrong and you wish to call them back, don’t call the number offered to you by the caller. If you want to reach your bank, call the number on the back of your card. If it’s another company you do business with, go to the company’s site and look up their main customer support number.
Unfortunately, this may take a little work. It’s not just banks and phone companies that are being impersonated by fraudsters. Reports on social media suggest many consumers also are receiving voice phishing scams that spoof customer support numbers at Apple, Amazon and other big-name tech companies. In many cases, the scammers are polluting top search engine results with phony 800-numbers for customer support lines that lead directly to fraudsters.
These days, scam calls happen on my mobile so often that I almost never answer my phone unless it appears to come from someone in my contacts list. The Federal Trade Commission’s do-not-call list does not appear to have done anything to block scam callers, and the major wireless carriers seem to be pretty useless in blocking incessant robocalls, even when the scammers are impersonating the carriers themselves, as in Jon’s case above.
I suspect people my age (mid-40s) and younger also generally let most unrecognized calls go to voicemail. It seems to be a very different reality for folks from an older generation, many of whom still primarily call friends and family using land lines, and who will always answer a ringing phone whenever it is humanly possible to do so.
It’s a good idea to advise your loved ones to ignore calls unless they appear to come from a friend or family member, and to just hang up the moment the caller starts asking for personal information.

Are car insurance companies having a laugh?
Me and a friend were taking out some car insurance quotes the other day - entering his information in he got 1700 a year on an old '95 (i think) cincequento, which frankly was hilarious. Now I dont get this - he lives in a pretty rough area in my town, right near where all the boy racers live and such. I however live in a small village about 2 miles away and just outside of the town. Will a ticket for driving without a license (underage) affect my insurance rates?
Hi, I'm 15, about to get my license, but I NEED to go somewhere tonight. My parents' only reason for not letting me drive is because they are misinformed as far as what the penalties would be if I got stopped. The likelihood of me even getting stopped by a police officer is incredibly low becuase I don't speed, I have all proper licenses, inspection passed, no modifications on my truck).., but they are convinced that if I do get stopped, the officer will unrelentingly give me a ticket, which they claim is a $500 fine (when I KNOW for a fact that here in Texas, the first violation is only $20-100).....But either way, I would pay for it... They are simply concerned about insurance, the one thing they do pay for. They believe that my liability (I don't have collision and comprehensive, just liability) insurance rates will immediately spike, when I get my license, as a result of a single moving violation for not having a license. I have USAA insurance, and I'm in Texas. Please, anybody who knows about this sort of thing please help me, I haven't been able to find any info anywhere else. Please provide proof as well. Thanks!""

Should I call my auto insurance?
This afternoon, I was at a gas station and I backed my 2003 Pontiac mini van into a concrete barrier very hard. The left rear bumper is falling off, the hatch is dented fairly bad in the corner so it is difficult to open (that dent is about 4 inches in diameter but very deep) and the side with an automatic door has two shallow dents about a foot across. One of my taillights chipped on the side but didn't crack or shatter. No broken glass or anything. The plastic bumper is cracked in a few places, and has red paint all over over it from the barrier. the doors still work (excepting that the hatch catches on the taillight area), no electronic or mechanical issues, just body damage. The question is, should I call insurance? I am almost 17 and I've had my license for about 6 months. Roughly how much would the body work cost, since my insurance with AARP is sure to go up dramatically? Or would I want to play it safe and place a claim? My parents know all about it, and it was a total accident (I missed the brake pedal and hit the accelerator). Just looking for the way that will cost me less in the long run. Thank you for your help.""

April 2011 my car suffered enough hail damage to become totaled. I owe more on my loan then my insurance company is giving me, and would need $4500 to buy it salvaged. I can not afford to buy a new car and this one still runs perfectly fine (it was all cosmetic damage). I have been paying on my insurance and my car loan and have not been called regarding my choice to keep or sell my car in a very long time. My insurance policy has even been renewed for another year with no changes to my policy. I see no reason they would come and take it and not just let me finish paying my car. The problem is now my wife (who is fresh out of college with tons of debt and lowered my credit score) wants me to take out a personal loan and buy the salvaged title to make sure they won't repo it. Apparently you can only take passengers under 21 years old in your car after you've had your license for a year. Anyways, my dad is really pissed about insurance rates or something. Is my roommate in trouble for auto insurance fraud?
My roommate has been commiting auto insurance fraud for the past 7 years. She registered her car in Georgia even though she's been living, working, and driving in NYC for the past 7 years. Somehow the auto insurance company found out. In NY auto insurance rate fraud is I THINK a federal offence now. So I told my roommate that even though they can proove she's been living and working in NYC for the past few years they can't proove that her car has been here the whole time too. So she should be a-ok and not worry, right? Obviously they will make her start paying nyc rates, but since they can't make her pay for the past 7 years because proof of employment and living here doesn't proove she's been driving to work every day here too right?""

Motorcycle insurance estimate after DWI?
I'm 21 and had a pretty clean driving record untill 2 years ago when I was charged with a DWI and was convicted of it 1 year ago and lost my licence for a year. Need help! ASAP! What will the insurance company say?
My boyfriend and I were at a stop light the light turned green. We started to go (this area is under contraction so the lanes are all messed up). The car in front of stops then hits their braks so did my boyfriend but it was to late we hit her. The car started to coast back and hit us again. Then we tryed to pull of to the side. We realized that it was a chain reaction. Car #1 was hit by car #2, car #3 hit car # 2 and we hit car #3 in that order. We did not launch all the cars together. I did call the police and we got the stupidest officer there was that pretty much wrote the story up wrong. At the sence everyone was agreeing what happend. The woman we hit was a 77 year old lady. The first thing she when she got out of the car was she couldn't get her car in gear. (I don't know why it was out of gear but ok) Car #1 and Car #2 said they weren't going to do anything about their cars insurance company wise. Car #2 I'm sure will be going after the older woman in Car #3. The older woman said since it was likely the bumper would just buff out it was ok for my boyfriend to do that for her. But he said he would not touch the front of her car. (After talking to the insurace company they said my boyfriend fixxing it is a bad idea) My boyfriends car is the worse out of all of them it smashed in hood in, and broke the radatior brakets. (His car sat higher then hers and thats why it smashed it) The cop did try to write my boyfriend a ticket but the woman said it wasn't his fault the other cars hit before he hit Car #3. How will the insurance company handle this? What will happen to our car? We have Geico inusrance will no colistion insurance. It seems like his inusrance company is trying to say it was all his fault.""

Assurant Health Insurance?

He is not the type to go to the doctor very often so a very basic plan is what we got him. It started out only being $160 for 3 months; now today I received a letter that it will be going up to $250 for 3 months. I have changed jobs and kept my insurance for awhile through Cobra but eventually found different coverage because the Cobra was so high in cost. But of course it has went up to almost $300 a month. I have been searching online for health insurance and found Assurant and it seems like I can get good coverage at a fair price. Do you have assurant? Do you think it's good coverage? Do you have any problems with using it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Would a 2-door car be more expensive to insure than a 4-door?
I believe 2-door cars are usually considered sports cars, in turn, making them riskier to drive and costing more to insure them. But what if it was a 4-door car that was a sports car? Specifically the Dodge SRT-4. It's a 4-door car, but it's made to be fast. Would this cost the same, or less than the 2-door? This is all assuming the cars are of the same year and everything. 2-door = Dodge Neon coupe 4-door = Dodge SRT-4""

As a new Driver when should I expect my insurance costs to lower?
Here is the background: I am 27 years old and I just learned to driver a little over 7 months ago. I know that as a COMPLETELY new driver my insurance costs weren't going to be the best so I was surprised when most if not all companies I went to quoted me at about 400-450 for 6 months of full coverage. I thought this was very very good because that is about what my husband pays and hes had an perfect driving record since he was 17. Well when I went in to buy my first car ( brand new and financed, so I needed full coverage based on my state laws. ) Before I left the lot I called my chosen insurance company and they activated my insurance for me. To my dismay but not complete shock they told me they would have to raise the quote because I didn't have a driving record yet. ( At this point I had only had the license about 3-4 weeks I don't quite remember ). I was told this should clear up the next time I renew. Well my premium has actually gone up fifty dollars ( instead of down 150 )! I was shocked. So, out of curiosity I got quotes from other places now and it was just as expensive if not more so. What happened? I've had no moving or parking violations, my driving record is perfect. I thought I would ask the yahoo community before I call my insurance company to point fingers.""

Cancelling Car Insurance questions any help please?
Okay, first and foremost thanks for reading. The situation with me right now is I'm thinking about cancelling my car insurance after this month. This is my first time having insurance but I can't afford the payments because I have been unsuccessful in getting a job. Not only that but the car cannot be driven again until it is fixed so it will stay in the yard. I didn't get into an accident or anything but it needs a few parts cause they've worn out. So I was just going to get it cancelled/lapsed whatever since there is no point for me to have it if I cannot drive my vehicle. I don't have the money right now to repair it either. I'm thinking about cancelling it, waiting until I get my car fixed and then getting some new insurance. But my mom told me that once your insurance runs out in NC you have to bring the tags back... Does that mean I have to pay the full registration fee again once I get another insurance policy as well? Or can I somehow just keep my tags until I get some new insurance within the next two or three months? By the way the vehicle will stay parked until I have enough money to fix it and insure it.""

I’ve been paranoid...
...So in the beginning of this month I had some fraudulent charges on my credit card. No big deal, right? Credit card fraud is resolved quickly.
I got a new card, new number.
I used it ONCE.
And then another charge was put on that, thankfully, my bank caught it.
How the hell does this keep happening? Does someone have direct access to my account? And that scares the shit out of me because I have a checking account as well. Seriously, life, why?
I literally could be fucked if someone took my *real* money.
It seems like life has a way of fucking with you every year at least once...
...You always have something detrimental to your life financially.
At least when you are a normal, working class person.
Sooooo. I have a couple things that I would be fucked over if they “broke”: My computer, my car, my health, and my dog. Now I’m adding my bank account info to this list because of this year.
2018 - Before the credit card thing, my dog was diagnosed with bladder stones and the vet was pushing a thousand-dollar surgery. Thankfully, the stones were able to be dissolved with diet.
But this year isn’t over...................
2017 - My older vehicle was really really annoying, and it felt like a ticking time bomb. It was a 1999 Chevy Malibu that I loved, but everything was going to shit slowly in the car: My visor fell off, my windows didn’t move anymore, my ac was dead, my car’s shocks were shot, etc. I got a new car, with a fancy car loan attached, but I still love my used 2016 Chevy Spark.
2016 - I had to buy a laptop because my old one got a massive virus. And then when I paid to get it fixed, got another massive attack somehow or maybe I just did something terribly wrong. I think I clicked on a windows update thing and it ended up killing my computer for good. I was a college student with only that laptop to do work on, so I was not pleased.
You get the picture.
Every. Fucking. Year.
Currently, I’m watching my account like a hawk. I check it in the morning and evening now, and so far so good with the debit. But I am extremely paranoid and anxiety-written that it’ll happen to this account. These thieves really do not know or care how much they are wrecking other people’s lives. Humanity is saddening.

How to use credit cards wisely: A definitive guide
It’s back to basics month at Get Rich Slowly! Today, we’re going to take a l-o-n-g look at how to use credit cards wisely. Believe it or not, credit cards can be a useful tool — so long as you don’t fall into debt.
For a long time, I thought credit cards were evil. Starting in college, I abused credit cards. As a result, I ended up deep in debt. Those two decades of debt sucked, and they led me to believe that credit cards were dangerous.
Well, credit cards are dangerous — but they’re not evil. Credit cards are a tool. Like any other tool, credit cards can be used to build or to destroy. Just as you’d treat a chainsaw with respect, you need to be careful with credit to avoid hurting yourself. If you use credit cards wisely, they can actually give you a financial edge!
Because this is a long article, I’ve create a table of contents so that you can jump to the section you need. (Or, you can read the entire thing, of course.)

How Credit Cards Work
First, let’s review some basics.
When you buy something with a credit card, you’re taking a small loan from the card issuer — Bank of America, Capital One, your local credit union — and you owe the issuer that amount. If you pay your balance in full each month, the card basically gives you a short-term, interest-free loan. You’re taking advantage of “float”.
This free float is a fine thing — so long as you pay your balance every month. But if you carry a balance, the advantage of float vanishes. Anything you might have gaines is lost to fees and high interest rates.
How many Americans carry balances and how much debt does the average cardholder owe? There’s a lot of conflicting data out there, but one reliable source of information is the Federal Reserve, which every three years publishes its Survey of Consumer Finances. The latest study, from 2016, found that:
43.9% of American families have credit card debt, and
the average amount owed is $5700.
Clearly, lots of Americans continue to struggle to use credit cards wisely.
That said, not everybody who uses credit cards goes into debt. In fact, the Survey of Consumer Finances shows that over half of Americans use credit cards without going into debt. They treat them as a convenience.
True story: Last year, I went into a bank to apply for a new travel credit card. During the half-hour process, I chatted with the banker. “We banks don’t like people like you,” he told me. “I’m sure you’re a nice guy, but you pay your bill every month. We don’t make any money on you. Fortunately, 90% of people who use credit cards suck with money!” He told me banks are willing to lose money on the handful of folks who use credit cards wisely because they make so much money on the people who abuse them.
Why Use a Credit Card?
If credit cards are so dangerous, why use them? Let’s be clear on one thing: If you worry about self-discipline, if there’s even the slightest possibility that using credit cards might lead you to debt, the smart choice is not to use them. Outsmart yourself by not letting yourself be tempted.
That said, here are reasons people use credit cards:
Convenience. It’s easier to carry around a single piece of plastic than to deal with cash and checks. Plus, a lot of people like the automatic record-keeping that comes from using a card.
Protection. Most credit cards offer a variety of features that protect your purchases. Some extend manufacturers’ warranties. Others offer insurance for things like rental cars. Others protect you in the case of a purchase gone sour. On top of that, if your wallet is stolen, your cash is gone. But the Fair Credit Billing Act limits your liability on a stolen credit card to $50.
Building credit. Your credit score has a huge impact on your personal finances. Using credit cards wisely improves your credit score so that you can get the best rates on auto loans, mortgages, and other financial products — including, of course, other credit cards.
Rewards. Nowadays, most credit cards offer perks of some sorts. Some offer airmiles. Others offer cash-back bonuses. The new travel credit card I picked up last year includes all sorts of benefits, including TSA pre-check and access to airport lounges.
Again, these benefits are meaningless if you don’t use credit cards wisely. If you miss a payment or carry a balance, you’ve negated your cash-back bonus for months (or years) to come — and you’ve hurt your credit score. Pay your balance in full each month, and credit cards can be a valuable addition to your money toolbox.
Essential Credit Card Skills
Okay, you get it. Credit cards are the chainsaws of personal finance. Used wisely, they can be an awesome tool. Used carelessly, you’re likely to cut off a (metaphorical) arm. Let’s turn our attention now to some essential credit card skills.
First and foremost: In order to use a credit card without getting burned, you can’t let it change your spending habits. A credit card isn’t a license to spend; it’s just a different way to pay. If you’re using credit cards to spend more than you earn, you’re using them wrong.
Here are what I consider five essential skills to using credit cards wisely:
Learn to read the fine print. Read the legal stuff when you fill out the application, when you receive the card, and on any future mailings. Credit card terms and conditions can be confusing. This credit card glossary from Wells Fargo can help. If you don’t understand something, ask for help.
Similarly, review your statement every month. Due dates, fees, and interest rates are subject to change. Reconcile transactions and keep an eye out for fraud. Many people — and I’m one of them — actually check their statements online several times a month. By paying attention, you can prevent small annoyances from becoming large hassles. (Just yesterday, I found an a billing error. I was charged for two episodes of Smallville on iTunes. It’s only $1.98, but it’s not $1.98 that I spent, so I disputed it.)
As always, don’t be afraid to speak up. If you notice something strange on your bill, call customer service. If you want to dispute a charge, call customer service. If you want a rate reduction, call customer service. It never hurts to ask.
Be wary of the special offers your credit card company sends you. Understand the teaser rates. Beware offers to skip a payment. Be suspicious of other products the company tries to push: insurance, fraud protection, etc. Many of these are bad deals for consumers.
Finally, pay your bill on time and in full every month. If you are not yet in credit card debt, don’t start. Don’t rely on credit cards to support a lifestyle you cannot afford. Don’t resort to using a credit card because you can’t afford to pay cash for something — use a credit card because you can.
These skills are all rather academic. They’re important, yes, but they don’t address the behavioral issues that lead to credit card debt. It’s one thing to say “pay your bill on time and in full every month”, but it’s another thing to actually do it. What most people need are real-life methods for using credit cards without going into debt. Let me show you the four laws I use to guide my credit card use.
How to Use Credit Cards Wisely
I can’t speak for everyone, but I know that for me, I had to adopt an actual set of written guidelines to define what acceptable credit card behavior would look like. No joke. Because I’d been in credit card debt for twenty years, when I decided to re-enter the world of credit cards in 2007, I was very nervous. I set the following ground rules:
I resolved to make my decision to buy first, and then decide how to pay. This may seem like common sense, but it used to be that I’d let the fact that I could pay on credit influence my decision: “I have a credit card, so I can just charge it and pay later.” Now, however, I decide whether or not to make a purchase, and then I decide which payment method makes the most sense for me: cash, credit, debit, check, etc. (I do this because research shows folks tend to spend more with credit than with cash. I’m sure that I’m not completely negating this effect, but by putting the buying decision before the payment decision, I’m hoping to mitigate the overuse of credit.)
I vowed never to buy anything unless I had cash in the bank for it. In other words, if I see a new videogame system that I want, I won’t buy it on credit if doing so means that I have to wait for cash to come in. Or, if I decide to take a safari to South Africa, I don’t make the purchase unless I already have cash in the bank to cover the entire expense. I only use credit if I could actually pay with cash. (Why not pay cash then? Because often credit is more convenient, and because by paying with credit I get 1% cash back.)
I promised to pay my card in full every month. This goes back to the last item in the list above: I never carry a balance. This is my number-one rule. Everything else is secondary. When I decided to try using credit cards again with rewards cards, I promised that if I ever carried a balance, I’d cancel the card. It’s been over ten years now, and I’ve never carried a balance.
I told myself that I’d never use my card for an impulse purchase. One of the things that got me in trouble with credit during the 1990s was impulse spending. And while I still struggle from a compulsion to spend, by not using credit I limit myself to the cash I have in my pocket. (I try not to use my debit card for impulse spending, either.)
Despite these careful steps, I do sometimes worry about my use of credit. Research shows that people tend to spend more with credit than with cash. Am I doing that? Is my use of credit hurting local businesses? (I won’t use credit at the local bookstore, for example, because I’ve talked with the owner and we know that merchant fees for card use hurt her business. I always pay cash when I buy from her.) And by using credit, am I feeding the monster of predatory lending?
How to Choose a Credit Card
No two credit cards are the same. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Over the past decade, I’ve come to believe that choosing a credit card is a little like choosing a mate. That probably sounds silly, but I’m not joking.
Instead of just marrying the first person you meet, you take your time to find a partner that makes your life better. You should do the same when looking for credit cards. Decide what features are important to you, then spend time looking until you find the card that’s best for you.
The biggest factor to consider is whether or not you currently carry a balance on your cards. If you do, or you’re worried that you might in the future, then look for cards with low interest rates. On the other hand, if you pay your balance in full each month as you should, then your credit card interest rate doesn’t matter. Instead, look for a card with no annual fee and/or a solid rewards program. (My latest card actually has a ginormous annual fee — $300! — but it also comes with a $300 “travel credit”, which effectively negates that annual charge.)
In either case, keep the following in mind as you look for the perfect card:
Take time to do research. Your goal is to find the card that best suits your needs, so don’t just sign up for the first offer that comes in the mail. You can research cards at sites like Consumer Reports, Card Ratings, Index Credit Cards, and NerdWallet.
Check with your credit union. If you belong to a credit union, you may be able to get a great deal on a card. A 2009 study from Pew Charitable Trusts found that “credit unions offered significantly lower advertised rates compared to bank credit cards, with penalty fees that were half the cost of comparable bank fees and fewer dangers associated with ‘unfair or deceptive’ practices.”
If you’re after a rewards card, choose one that offers something you value. Some offer frequent-flyer miles or other “points”. If these appeal to you, great. But if you’re not a big traveler, consider a cash-back card. Cash is versatile and, unlike airmiles, never expires.
Watch out for extra fees. Some fancy cards carry great perks — at a price. You’re usually better off with a no-fee card than paying $50 or $100 (or more) for features you rarely use.
Look for more than just a low interest rate. Though it might sound like gibberish, a credit card’s method of computing the balance for purchases is important. Look for cards that calculate your interest using either “average daily balance” or “adjusted balance”.
Once you’ve chosen a credit card, be sure you understand its limitations. Always read the fine print before you sign up. Remember: Your goal is to pick a useful tool. You’re not looking for a one-night stand, but a long-term relationship you can live with.
Which credit cards do I use? In 2007, at the prompting of Get Rich Slowly readers, I signed up for the Capital One No-Hassle Cash Back card, which not only gave me one percent cash-back on every purchase, but also came with some nifty travel benefits. For a decade, that was my main personal credit card. (In 2011, I signed up for a British Airways card from Chase, but that was just to get the miles. I don’t use it.)
Last January, “>I switched from my Capital One card to the Chase Sapphire Reserve because the latter boasts tons of travel perks, which I use often. So, there you go: I have three personal credit cards — although I only actively use one of them.
How to Dispute Credit Card Charges
Mistakes happen. Once in a while, a restaurant will charge you twice for the same meal. Or they’ll charge you for somebody else’s dinner. Just last month, my girlfriend noticed that the gym membership she’d cancelled two months earlier was still being charged to her account.
When you notice something goofy on your credit card statement, it’s important to act quickly to correct the problem. Here’s how:
Gather documentation. To make things easier when trying to resolve the issue, take time to gather supporting info such as receipts, warranties, and written contracts.
Start at the source. Before contacting your credit card issuer, first contact the merchant that charged the card. Explain the problem and ask them to resolve it. If that doesn’t worth, then move to the next step.
File a dispute with your card issuer. As soon as possible, send a written complaint to the issuer’s “billing inquiries” address (not the address where you send payments). Include info about your account, an explanation of the problem, and copies of any supporting documentation. The FTC offers a detailed description of the process. Also, most card issuers now have an online dispute-resolution process, which may be more convenient than filing a dispute by mail.
Take your complaint elsewhere. If you’re unhappy with how things turn out, contact agencies such as your state’s Attorney General’s office or the local Better Business Bureau.
Note that these steps are for disputing improper charges, not for fighting over shoddy merchandise. Your credit card may offer some protection if your new computer is a lemon, but you’ll need to read your card agreement to know your rights. Save the dispute process for actual billing errors.
How to Cancel a Credit Card
If you have trouble with compulsive spending, it’s best to take away the tool that makes it so easy to get into trouble. Don’t just cut up your credit cards — cancel them. Doing so buys you time to learn to manage credit responsibly without a constant temptation to spend. Even if you don’t have trouble with credit, you may still want to close an account from time to time.
Canceling a credit card is easy. But if you’re going to do it, do it right.
Close just one account at a time, even if you’re closing several. First, cancel cards that charge you fees. Also, it’s better to cancel new cards before old ones. And you may want to keep cards with good rewards programs.
Before you close an account, pay off your balance or transfer it elsewhere. If you try to cancel a card while it still has a balance on it, you might end up paying nasty fees and high interest rates.
Contact your credit card company. You can cancel some accounts online, which is convenient because often when you try to cancel by phone, the sales rep will do his best to talk you into staying. If this happens, be firm.
Send written confirmation. Follow up by writing a letter like this one to the card issuer.
Watch your credit report. It may take several weeks for changes to appear on your credit report. It’s your responsibility to be sure the report is accurate, so keep tabs on it. You may also want to watch your credit score to see if canceling the card did any damage.
When you’re certain the account is closed, cut up your card.
Be aware that canceling a credit card may actually hurt your credit score. Part of your score is based on how much of your available credit you actually use; this is your credit utilization ratio. When you close a card, this ratio jumps because you’re using more of your valuable credit. And when this ratio jumps, your credit score goes down. (Also note that the longer you’ve had an account, the more you’ll affect your credit score by closing it.)
If you think it’s important to keep a high credit score and you’re sure you won’t abuse them, then keep the accounts open. But it’s a mistake to keep your credit cards if having them will tempt you deeper into debt.
Final Thoughts
The credit card industry earned $163 billion through fees and interest in 2016. Much of this profit comes because they’ve made it easy for folks to spend more than they should and because people don’t understand the rules of the game. Remember: Your credit card company is not your friend. They’re hoping you screw up because that’s how they make money! In fact, the industry’s term for somebody who pays their bills on time is “deadbeat”. Nice, huh?
But millions of people — more than half of credit card users in the United States — have found that if they play by the rules, credit cards can make their lives a little easier. (Some brave folks even try to beat the credit card companies at their own game!)
Your credit cards will never make you ruch, but used wisely they can fee you to focus on the things that matter most in your life — and earn a few rewards in the process.
