TV: Trapped: The Alex Cooper Story (2019)

A menos que, como en el caso de "But I´m a Cheerleader" (1999), se trate el tema con el grado de absurdo que se merece, las películas cuyo argumento se centra en adolescentes gays y lesbianas atrapados en los tenebrosos métodos que ofrecen los "profesionales" de las "terapias de conversión" suelen ser difíciles de ver porque, en esencia, se trata de chicos siendo torturados psicológica y hasta físicamente en un contexto de extrema soledad. Sus padres los han puesto allí "por su bien" y, por lo tanto, consideran que todo lo que les suceda allí está plenamente justificado en nombre de Dios y de la salvación de sus almas.

La historia es real y le ocurrió a una chica llamada Alex Cooper, que narró esta traumática experiencia junto a Joanna Brooks en el libro "Saving Alex: When I Was Fifteen I Told My Mormon Parents I Was Gay, and That's When My Nightmare Began" ("Salvando a Alex: Cuando yo tenía quince años le dije a mis padres mormones que era gay y así fue cuando empezó mi pesadilla", 2016). A sus quince años, Cooper (Addison Holley) reconoce abiertamente su homosexualidad frente a sus padres (interpretados por Kate Drummond y Steven Cumyn). La "culpable": Frankie Jackson (Nicolette Pierce; el nombre real es Yvette). La "solución": expulsarla de su casa y, luego, enviarla a vivir con sus abuelos en Utah. Sin embargo, allí se encuentra con el principio del infierno: sus padres y abuelos habían coincidido en la necesidad de internarla en un lugar donde pudieran "reformarla". La casa familiar de los Simms (en la realidad, los Siale), regida por Tiana (Sara Booth) y Johnny (Ian Lake), se convierte en una prisión brutal con el nombre de Jesús en la boca y una amenaza: mejor que no intente nada porque estará sola, ya que todo el mundo los conoce y confía en ellos.

Burke (Wilson Cruz), que le demuestran que aún en ese ambiente salvaje, era posible vivir la propia sexualidad con libertad.

El libro cuenta un detalle que el telefilme, dirigido por Jeffrey G. Hunt, omite: Alex no quiso denunciar a los Siale para preservar su paz interior, pero el futuro fue implacable con ellos: perdieron sus trabajos y aún la tenencia de sus hijos.
