Morphew filed a complaint against the district attorney and several other prosecutors in 2023, after claiming allegations of misconduct that led to his arrest in the case of his missing wife, Suzanne Morphew. According to a motion of dismissal document obtained by FOX31, Morphew sued FBI Special Agents Jonathan Grusing and Kenneth Harris. Morphew is seeking damages from the agents’ personal assets through the U.S. Supreme Court case Bivens v. Six Unknown Named Agents. A 19-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder for starting a house fire that killed five people in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood more than three years ago. Gavin Seymour pleaded guilty in the Aug. 5, 2020, fire that killed five Senegalese family members in a home on Truckee Street. He faces between 16 and 40 years in prison on the single count of second-degree murder. Dozens of other charges against him will be dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Ouray Plaindealer newspapers stolen on day it publishes story with allegations of rape at police chief’s house

Hours after the Ouray County Plaindealer published a story detailing the alleged violent sexual assault of a teenage girl at the Ouray police chief’s house, someone stole hundreds of copies out of nearly every newspaper rack across the county, publishers say. The front-page story, written by co-publisher Erin McIntyre, broke the news that three men were arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl multiple times during a late-night party at the home of Ouray Police Chief Jeff Wood in May. “Someone didn’t like this edition of the (Plaindealer,)” co-publisher Mike Wiggins wrote on X Thursday. “Guess which article. So they stole nearly every newspaper out of our racks in Ouray County. If you hoped to silence or intimidate us, you failed miserably. Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Colorado man has been hit with a summons to appear in court after he admitted to stealing copies of a local newspaper. Paul Choate, 41, has received a citation for petty theft for stealing more than 200 printed copies of the Ouray County Plaindealer from a dozen racks in the area, the newspaper said in an online article Saturday. "Someone didn't like this edition of the Ouray County Plaindealer," co-publisher Mike Wiggins said on social media on Thursday, the day the thefts occurred. "Guess which article." The newspaper had reported the account of a 17-year-old girl in the town of Ouray who said she was raped more than once at the home of the town's chief of police, Jeff Wood. Three suspects were arrested for her alleged rape, including the chief's stepson Nate Dieffenderffer.*** Choate reportedly admitted he took the newspapers because of the front-page story. A grand jury has indicted Alec Baldwin on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the deadly shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the New Mexico set of "Rust," months after prosecutors dropped their case against the actor over her death. The indictment charges Baldwin, 65, with involuntary manslaughter (negligent use of a firearm) or, in the alternative, involuntary manslaughter (without due caution or circumspection), both fourth-degree felonies.*** David Halls, the first assistant director for the film, was sentenced in March 2023 to six months unsupervised probation as part of a plea deal. A New York judge denied Daniel Penny’s motion to dismiss his involuntary manslaughter case. Penny is accused of choking Jordan Neely to death last May. Witnesses say Neely shouted at and begged passengers for money in a New York City subway car. Penny already pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and negligent homicide charges. MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- An attorney for an Alabama inmate set to be the nation's first person ever put to death by nitrogen gas asked a federal appeals court Friday to block the upcoming execution using the “untested methods.” Kenneth Smith, 58, is scheduled to be executed Thursday, when a respirator-type mask will be put on his face to replace his breathing air with pure nitrogen — depriving him of the oxygen needed to stay alive. Three states — Alabama, Oklahoma and Mississippi — have authorized nitrogen hypoxia as an execution method, but no state has previously attempted to use it.*** During arguments Friday, Circuit Judge Charles Wilson noted that Smith, when fighting past attempts to execute him by lethal injection, had previously suggested nitrogen as an alternative method. It found nearly 60 percent of American “elites” think there is too much individual freedom in America. Meanwhile, nearly 60 percent of registered voters have the exact opposite opinion, reporting the United States has too much top-down control, limiting liberty.  The study, titled “Them Vs. U.S,” defined the American “elite” as “having a postgraduate degree, a household income of more than $150,000 annually, and living in a zip code with more than 10,000 people per square mile.” Such people account for about 1 percent of Americans. The study also examined a sub-sample of the 1 percent who graduated from Ivy League schools or other name-brand institutions such as Northwestern, Duke, Stanford, and the University of Chicago. The study from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity found ruling class opinions on climate policies were particularly harsh and despotic. More than two-thirds of the 1 percent support rationing vital energy and food sources in an attempt to control the globe’s weather. That number jumped to nearly 90 percent among the Ivy Leaguers. A suspected gunman being hunted by police in Illinois is believed to have fatally shot himself during a stand-off with cops at a gas station in Texas, authorities said. An existing manhunt for Romeo Nance, 23, was ramped-up after the discovery of bodies at two houses—believed to be family members who were known to Nance—on Monday. At that time, he was the prime suspect after a body was discovered at a home in the Chicago suburb of Will County on Sunday. He was also suspected of being involved in a separate non-fatal shooting that same day. Police began watching an address on West Acres Road in Joliet, Illinois, on Monday during what was supposed to be a surveillance stakeout for Nance at his last known address. They were also aware of a link between that home and another on the same block. But when Nance failed to show up, officers entered both homes to find five bodies in one and two bodies in the other. All of the victims had been shot.*** Local news channel ABC 7 reported that Nance had a lengthy criminal record and had been arrested a year ago for a string of felony gun charges. To fund business operations, Fayad sold outstanding medical and transportation invoices to a Texas-based investment firm. After Fayad failed to make appropriate payments to the Texas firm pursuant to their contracts, the Texas firm sued him in civil court for damages. Throughout the civil proceedings, Fayad caused the name and address of another Michigan resident who shared Fayad’s first and last name, but lived at a different address, to be placed on multiple legal documents, including on a settlement document which obligated Fayad to pay the Texas firm more than $6.3 million. Three Kansas City Chiefs fans were found frozen to death in the backyard of their friend’s home, where they had gathered to watch a game — but the homeowner is insisting he had “no knowledge” that their bodies had possibly been there for two days. An Alabama man was sentenced yesterday to life in prison for his involvement with a website dedicated to the advertisement and distribution of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse. According to court documents, William Michael Spearman, 58, of Madison, was the lead administrator of the website, which had been operating for many years. The website included a section devoted to the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers, a section devoted to images and videos depicting children being subjected to pain and torture, and a section devoted to avoiding detection by law enforcement, among others. As the lead administrator, Spearman managed numerous other “staff” members, directed them on how to help run the site, recommended other users for promotion, kept records of child sexual abuse material advertised and distributed over the site, presided over staff meetings, praised and scolded users, and counseled users and other managers about the functions and expectations of the website. According to the release, Darion Sexton, 22, admitted that he set fire to the Abiding Love Lutheran Church on the night of Jan. 19, 2023, by throwing two Molotov cocktails: one aimed at the church’s front door and another at the basement. A woman who stabbed a man more than 100 times before she turned the knife on herself during what was described as a “marijuana-induced psychotic state” will not serve any prison time, a judge ruled Tuesday. Bryn Spejcher, a Thousand Oaks resident, has been ordered to serve 100 hours of community service and two years of probation for the deadly stabbing of Chad O’Melia. Spejcher, during a state of psychosis triggered by marijuana, stabbed O’Melia more than 100 times on May 27, 2018, after they smoked the drug together.*** Because Spejcher was under psychosis at the time of the stabbing, she was charged with involuntary manslaughter instead of murder. Sextortion: A Growing Threat Targeting Minors

Offenders deceive and manipulate victims to create sexually explicit material for extortion purposes BALTIMORE, MD—FBI Baltimore wants to warn parents, educators, caregivers, and children about the dangers of online activity that may lead to the solicitation and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual acts.  *** Victims are typically males between the ages of 14 to 17, but any child can become a victim. For financially motivated sextortion, offenders are usually located outside the United States and primarily in West African countries such as Nigeria and Ivory Coast or Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines.  These crimes can lead victims to self-harm and have led to suicide. From October 2021 to March 2023, the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations received over 13,000 reports of online financial sextortion of minors. So, there’s this sentence, Junior mentions in passing when he strolls into the kitchen on this bright, sunny morning. The moment is from 10.19 and his words stuck in my brain since I saw the episode. It’s weekend for sure, maybe Sunday even because of the lazy mood. But it could also be Saturday. Junior is obviously freshly showered and wants some breakfast. And to him it’s no surprise finding Frank by the kitchen island with this Seal apron on (must be Steve’s right?) while he prepares breakfast for the whole McGarrett household in Steve’s kitchen. By the way, the flower Frank places as a decoration on the fruit plate? Just sweet and lovely.

Frank in Steve’s kitchen, as if he’s become another member of Steve’s patchwork family...that’s also something to muse about but I love to watch Frank cooking. He looks damn confident and right at home.

Okay, Junior rubs his hands and says, as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. “Should I wake up Steve?”

And Frank answers, completely busy but with a slight undertone to it and this shy hesitation. “No, no, no, uh, he and I went out late last night.”

Steve’s still asleep while Frank’s rummaging in his kitchen and bacon is sizzling in a pan and the addictive smell of coffee fills the kitchen. It’s broad daylight outside. The sun’s up and Steve’s well-known as an early bird who’s normally out of bed and in the water to plow through sea and surf at the crack of dawn. But he still sleeps...so tightly and deeply that Junior wants Frank’s permission to wake him. That’s the thing that keeps my cogs going in my brain and my heart rate speeds up.

Okay, the other thing is that Steve had been out with Frank. I guess he had one too many. He wasn’t drunk but Frank isn’t to beat in bottom’s up games. He’s too good. But I figure Frank and Steve had a good evening and a good talk. And that talk and why they had been out together is also worth musing about. Frank is somehow the last man standing in the long row of people who died on Steve. And he knows war, brotherhood and danger and how it is to deal with the fallout, the psychological issues. Frank knew Joe.

Then, McGarrett’s house doesn’t have so many bedrooms. Let’s assume Frank crashed on Steve’s couch because he was too tipsy to drive home. Junior slept in his room and Steve is still asleep in his bed and that leaves one place open for Danny to sleep - in Steve’s bed, where he belongs. And there’s my next thought. Danny buries his head in Steve’s pillow und reaches for Steve’s body to pull him closer. Danny tangles their legs and breathes softly into Steve’s neck. Danny knows Steve needs his sleep and he also knows he’s going to coax some information out of Steve after breakfast. Even if it’s only to find out if Steve’s okay. And Danny has learned to translate Steve’s ‘I’m fine’ in many different ways. Because Steve’s ‘I’m fine’ also means, ‘I can’t talk about it and if I wanted to talk about it I don’t know where to start or how to find the right words.

So, that one sentence from Junior gives me some intense thinking to do and I haven’t even started properly. This sentence is just full of many different things. At least, to me.

Imagine H50 episode where...

It's Halloween. And there is a case. A big one. Idk... the Navy and CIA want to catch dangerous guys but something something and there is Joe, Wade, Doris, Cath, Mick and even Frank Bama but of course they all need five-O team. These dangerous guys are at Halloween party (let's say it's a big charity party on the beach and there is governor Denning and so on and all Ohana members - yeah, Sang Min, Odell etc. too). You know, some undercover operation is needed. "Ok, I'm going with Danno", says Steve. But then Doris is like "no". Doris says that they need "a couple" to look less suspicious and something something. Doris of course is looking at Catherine. "Mom, I said. I'm going with Danno. We're the best team", Steve tries but Joe is like "no, Doris is right". And Cath is like "oh come on, Steve, be professional, we've got mission". Jerry is like "cool, you can be a couple of vampires, like Edward and Bella!". Steve is quiet. He's got the feeling that Doris and Joe still ship him with Cath and think that he really loves her and oh they think that after all of that Steve will forget. Cath smiles like a devil. Doris says "That's great! Thank you, Jerry" and "Ok, now go buy your costumes". Wade adds: "Be on the beach at eight". Cath smiles again: "So... shopping? It will be fun". "Sorry, Cath", Steve says, "but I'll do it on my own".

Cath is waiting in her Bella Swan costume. "You look good, sister", Kamekona smiles, "Oh, there he is! Your Ed...". Steve is coming, in a noble robes, he's wearing long light wig. "That's not Edward, brah!". "Indeed", says Max, "That hair is too long and too light for Edward Cullen and that costume... Who are you?". Steve smiles: "Oh, I'm Lestat". Then suddenly Gracie comes, she is wearing long blue dress and a big curly blonde wig. "Hello, daddy", she says to Steve. Steve smiles more: "And this, this is my daughter, Claudia". Everyone is like WTF. And then... Danny comes, slowly - but he comes. He too looks like a noble vampire, his wig hair is long and dark. "Uhm, good evening?", Danny says (and whispers to Steve: "You'll pay me for that. In money"). Steve's smile is so fucking wide now: "And THIS is my Louis". Everyone is like OMG. Cath is like "Excuse me, WHAT?!". Then Gracie says to Doris: "Daddies need to go catch someone. Will you stay with me, grandma?". Max laughs and when Danny and Steve finally go for their mission he says to all (but he is looking at Cath): "Well, it's just a fact. The interview with a vampire is a lot better than Twilight".

Like Douglas Sirk, Vincente Minnelli had a special touch with the movie melodrama, taking its often objectively silly elements seriously enough that you can actually believe in them. The James Jones novel on which the screenplay for Some Came Running was based is one of those semi-autobiographical books that writers seem to need to get out of their systems, but adapting it meant challenging the Production Code strictures, particularly on sex, at almost every turn. So the characters in the film are only as believable as the actors can make them. There's a lot of shorthand in the film about the relationships between Dave Hirsh (Frank Sinatra) and the two women in his life, the "schoolteacher" Gwen French (Martha Hyer) and the "floozie" Ginnie Moorehead (Shirley MacLaine). It's not immediately clear why Dave falls in love so swiftly with Gwen, who seems to want to mentor him as a writer more than she does to sleep with him, or why he stays connected with the illiterate and rattle-brained Ginnie, to the extent of marrying her on the rebound from Gwen. Fortunately, all three actors are adept at pulling characters out of the script, where they don't seem to have been fully written. Dean Martin was just beginning to show that he could act -- Howard Hawks would complete the process the following year with Rio Bravo -- and Minnelli helped give his career a boost by casting him as the alcoholic gambler Bama Dillert. And Arthur Kennedy completes the ensemble as Dave's go-getter older brother, Frank. Minnelli makes the most of these colorful performers, to the extent that MacLaine, Kennedy, and Hyer all received Oscar nominations. But he's also adept, as he would show in 1960 with Home From the Hill, at taking a real small town location and bringing it to full life, especially in the climactic scene that takes place in the carnival celebrating the town's centennial. The location gives the film a substance and reality that the script never quite supplies.

So this is a 1987 drawing by Michael Kaluta of all people, presumably for a commission of sorts although he isn’t sure. I don’t know what kind of person would have even asked him to draw a hypothetical Mer Shadow, other than a time-traveling version of me trying to capture an exact crossbreed of my interests (but it can’t be me, because I would have paid for it to be a shark).

In case any of you following me somehow don’t know who Michael Kaluta is, he’s the creator of Madame Xanadu who famously illustrated The Shadow in the 70s DC revival, as well as several of the Dark Horse comics and others, and was even brought on-set to help design The Shadow’s movie costume. He’s generally considered one of The All-Time Definitive Shadow Artists along with the Rozen Brothers, and you can very well argue that, just as Frank Frazetta did for Conan and James Bama for Doc Savage, it was his sleek and smoky take of The Shadow’s design, with it’s pronounced scarf and Inverness cloak and silent film villain staging, that’s kept the character alive much more so than anything written in the comics.

And he’s also gifted us with the sketch idea of The Shadow as a fish monster, which is clearly what it was all building up to. 

So in the authority invested in me by myself and the name Maxwell Grant, I therefore officially declare MerShadow to be an established part of The Shadow Multiverse as an irreputable canon fact, unless Conde Nast knocks down my door and threatens me for knowing too much. But those suckers don’t know I live in a van and they’ll never find me, so good luck with that.
