Bought these framed cards/prints in a charity shop today - recycled paper, typeset by hand, antique letterpress printing from 2003. Have since proceeded to go on a deep dive of the creators. Some of my favs I've found below.

Saturn Press

Saturn Press founded in 1986 by married couple Jane Goodrich who creates the designs and James van Pernis who runs the company's 4 antique printing presses. Based on Swan's Island off the Maine coast, this eco-conscious company helped create the bridge that saved craft printing. Using an old-fashioned letterpress technique, paper sourced from a sustainable family-run mill, and a love for what they do, Saturn Press expanded the colour palette with custom blending of each ink colour and engaging in elaborate methods rarely used by printers of the past or present.

Due South

The end of Summer in Maine is often filled with mixed feelings. Truth is, seasons are what some people appreciate most in this northern clime.

This unique and vibrant letterpress card reveals some of the underlying beauty in transition as colors fade from warm to cool. A hundred geese or more are in flight -their dark silhouettes tangled with leafless branches on trees.

The image is credited to Francis Lee Jaques, a nationally-known wildlife artist who worked for over 20 years with the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Though his name is not of the household variety, his legacy has shaped America’s vision of nature for generations.

A High-Flying Feathursday

This week we bring you some images from American author Florence Page Jaques’s 1939 book The Geese Fly High, illustrated by her husband Francis Lee Jaques and published by the University of Minnesota Press. The two married in 1927 when Florence was 37 and Francis was almost 40, and enjoyed a lifetime of outdoors adventures, which produced several books.

The Geese Fly High chronicles a winter vacation following the waterfowl migration. Beginning with a duck-hunting trip in Minnesota, Florence writes a lively and detailed account of their trip down the Mississippi flyway, through the White River bottom swamps in Arkansas, and around the Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary in the marshlands of Louisiana.

The birds we are able to identify with some certainly are Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) alighting from the water (image #3), White-fronted Geese ( Anser albifrons, #5), Snow Geese (Anser caerulescens, #6), Canada Geese ( Branta canadensis, #7), and a Scaup (can’t tell if it’s Lesser or Greater) being attacked aby a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus, #8).

What other fandoms are you familiar enough with to use as an AU prompt? Pokemon Trainer AU? Homestuck AU (they'd still probably die but at least there are lots of ways to come back to life)?

I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU.  I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games.  I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas.  (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it.  As in, our twelfth-grade US History class, I shit you not, covered Gone With the Wind.)  There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.

Disclaimer 2: There are a crapton of errors — typos, misspelled names, misattributions, questionable genre classifications, etc. — in here.  If you genuinely have no idea what a title is supposed to be, ask me.  Otherwise, please don’t bother letting me know about my mistakes.

Disclaimer 3: I am not looking for recommendations.  My Goodreads “To Read” list is already a good 700 items long, and people telling me “if you like X, then you’ll love Y!” genuinely stresses me the fuck out.

Disclaimer 4: There are no unproblematic faves on this list.  I love Supernatural, and I know that Supernatural is hella misogynistic.  On the flip side: I don’t love The Lord of the Rings at all, partially because LOTR is hella misogynistic, but I also don’t think that should stop anyone else from loving LOTR if they’re willing to love it and also acknowledge its flaws.

It was one year ago that we said goodbye to the old Bell Museum of Natural History.

Although a modernized version is soon to be unveiled at its new location this summer, it will not be the same. The closing of the original building was the true end of an era and reflects a trend occurring with all museums. This is a photo of one of the beautiful antique taxidermy dioramas painted by my great-granduncle, Edward V. Brewer for the Bell Museum. It was among 4 he painted for them in the early 1900's. Sadly it's now only a memory. The majority of the museum's world-renowned historical dioramas were lost to the relocation project. Their beautiful old Art Deco building had been quietly suffering water damage for decades so it was decided they would relocate. Unfortunately they will not be reinstalling all of the dioramas at the new building because they are considered outdated. The new modern museum will focus on interactive exhibits for children. An ironic evolution. As the museum forges forward with a mission to engage the next generation in wildlife conservation, their move becomes part of the global extinction of diorama halls. It breaks my heart to see taxidermy halls fade away – particularly the Bell. It was the Bell's dioramas that shaped my mind as a child and led me down my career path. Unfortunately only some of the larger dioramas will be reinstalled in the new space. These made the cut because the backdrops were painted by the famous wildlife painter Francis Lee Jaques, deemed more important of an artist than my great granduncle. Truly tragic, because my uncle is also part of this state's rich artistic heritage. He painted numerous portraits of politicians, many of which still hang on the walls of the Minnesota state capital, and in 1908 he had the honor of having his work featured on the cover of LIFE magazine. Most notably however, he created the iconic chef character for Cream of Wheat and all of the art for their early ads – one of the most successful advertising campaigns in American history. His art is a highly sought after collector's item, and a century later the portrait of his chef still graces every box of Cream of Wheat.

 So, cheers to you Uncle Ed; you are gone but not forgotten. And rest in peace old Bell Museum; May you be reborn in a way that continues to inspire people of all ages to be compassionate stewards of this planet and the creatures we share it with.

An As Far as the Yukon Feathursday

We hold several books illustrated by the noted American wildlife painter and book illustrator Francis Lee Jaques (1887-1969). He and his wife, nature and travel writer Florence Page Jaques (1890-1972), were avid outdoors and wildlife enthusiasts, and Francis illustrated several of Florence's published travel memoirs. As Far as the Yukon, published by Harper Brothers in 1951, is one of their later joint publications. The book recounts a journey taken by the Jaques along the west coast, much of it by train, from southern California to the Yukon. Florence Jaques makes keen observations about the birds she encountered for which Francis Jaques provided lively illustrations. Click on the images to see the bird species captions.
