Expats
Gabriel was quite a freeloader. Of course he didn't come to Dubai as an expat because he was stupid or lazy. But he also knew pretty well that he would have had a much harder time in France affording the life he could afford here. Life in Dubai was luxury, pure luxury. He had a cool house with a pool, a gardener, a housekeeper and a chauffeur, and he earned a huge amount of money. He didn't necessarily work nine to five, but he didn't necessarily work himself to death either. In short, for him, life here was pure paradise!
Tumblr media
Gabriel had heard the news that the climate had turned a little against the privileges of expats. But he wasn't interested in it. He would do his job here, he was saving a lot of money, which was safely invested in Switzerland, if necessary, he would be on the plane back to Paris tomorrow and look for a job in Riyadh or Kuwait. The United Arab Emirates were not the only place on this planet where he could make money. And besides, he didn't really care about it today. It was Saturday. Tomorrow he would have to sit in the office again, today he wanted to work out at the gym and then hang out with a few friends at the beach club for the rest of the day. A few cocktails, lobster for dinner and then to bed. The only problem was: his driver had the day off. And even though Gabriel had been living in Dubai for several years, he couldn't drive a car himself! He had forgotten how. That's why there were drivers. So he ordered a taxi.
The porter at his community had announced the driver. Gabriel took his sports bag. A quick check in the mirror: yes, he looked good. He opened the door. The brand new Toyota taxi was parked in front of the door. The driver got out and asked in English if Gabriel wanted to put the sports bag in the boot. Gabriel barely looked up from his phone and just shook his head. He didn't feel like having any more contact with the driver than absolutely necessary. The driver opened the back door for him, Gabriel got in, repeated his destination once more and continued playing with his cell phone. The driver remained quiet at first. But then he started talking. First in English. About the weather, about football, where Gabriel came from, whether he liked Dubai. Gabriel simply didn't react. The driver just kept talking. That he had fled from Syria. That he had been in Dubai for four years. That he had two children. He showed Gabriel pictures in his wallet. His English became more and more incomprehensible. A mixture of English and Arabic. Gabriel continued to pretend to be deaf. The driver kept talking. In Arabic. He was ranting about the expats. About the arrogance of the infidels, who thought they were better than everyone else, even though they were dependent on the mercy of Allah, who had given the Muslims oil.
Gabriel was annoyed. He wanted to work on a few e-mails and not talk about politics. What did he care about politics? So he snapped at the driver, "Rakkiz 'ala al-siyaqa, ana mashghul!" The driver smiled. He looked in the rear-view mirror. God's plan was working.
Tumblr media
The taxi driver's language began to change again. Arabic with a French accent. Gabriel sat in the back on the worn imitation leather seats of the old taxi. In the front, Ayoub couldn't stop getting worked up about the last few games of Olympic Marseille. Djibril grinned. He knew the feeling. When Ayoub was in a rage, he was in a rage. Fortunately, they were almost at the wholesale market, then his brother would let him out. Ayoub would drive his shift to an end. And Djibril would see what kind of job he could get. He and his pals ironically called themselves the expats. It was true in a way… His brother and he had immigrated from Morocco ten years ago. They had family in Marseille. Djibril had really tried hard at school, but at some point he stopped going and started working as a day laborer at the wholesale market. He was doing well. By now, Djibril had his network, he knew his way around. And he was strong and fast. He saved what he earned. He was proud of his brother Ayoub, who made it to get a taxi license and his own taxi, which was also Djibril's goal.
Tumblr media
He checked his messages. It was still dawn. Ayoub was on his way to the banlieue to sleep. It was good when he drove the night shift, then he and Djibril didn't have to share the small bedroom. So far, no one had contacted him to request Djibril's services. If necessary, he could help out in his aunt's café in the kitchen. There was no money for that, though. But a café and a lunch. Life as an expat wasn't so bad.

💌 ⤻ THE CEO, ADRIAN HOUDE
—> you're the sweet little intern, and he's the big bad wolf who wants to eat you up.
⤻ reader is written as a female, yandere male, age gap, power dynamic, toxic obsession, slightly suggestive, slight financial abuse, set in london, this is a drabble but full fics of him will be made in the future
🦋 ⤻ archives.
Tumblr media
TOP TEN BACHELORS NEAR YOU!
1. Adrian Houde.
Tall, Handsome, Rich, Successful, Ambitious. Ask anyone with more than half a braincell and they will immediately tell you that all these traits are what Adrian Houde has! Born from the rich Houde Family known for their luxury fashion products, he had risen the ranks as CEO of his family's company a few years back.
And boy oh boy, has he made himself known. From various (fake) scandals of him dating various women, to his success in the market in revolutionising his family's industry in fast fashion but still remaining loyal to his grandmother's routes as a custom tailor who first gained traction in France.
Perhaps Mister Houde's only flaw is that he has been on this bachelor list for far too long! He's already in his mid-30s, can you believe this guy has been single for so long?
So, to the lady who catches his eye, good luck surviving all the jealous women who are going to come after you, sweetheart!
✧ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ✧
Adrian Houde is a proud man. I mean, who wouldn't be, right? He was successful, and rich, and practically everyone — regardless of gender or age — wanted to be with him or be like him. He was the pinnacle of a great man, just like his father had said he would be.
So why was it that when you entered the office, looking like a lost little puppy dog, that you captured his interest immediately. Perhaps it was the coffee stains on your skirt and the way your eyes sparkled with desire for greatness. He had seen that spark many times before. In his own eyes, actually. From the moment he saw himself in the mirror as a teen who became aware of the legacy on his shoulders, he knew he was bound for greatness. And you, a simple woman, of all people, carried that same determination and ambition within those cute eyes of yours.
You couldn't blame him for being intrigued by you.
Especially when you looked at him with so much fear in your eyes he couldn't help but laugh.
"I am so sorry, sir- I had no idea anyone was in the meeting room this early." You apologised frantically, holding a bunch of papers and a small, slightly shabby notebook.
"No, no." Adrian voice was smooth and sweet, a mixture of his French accent and his London boy accent he had gotten from the years of being raised in London. "Don't apologise. I was a bit too early to the meeting room, it seems." He said, taking his hands out of the pockets of his suits, raising out his hand towards you.
"Adrian Houde." He introduced out of courtesy.
Hurriedly, you rushed to take his hand, firmly shaking it like you had been taught.
You touch sent shivers down his spine. Was it because your hands were cold or was it something else about you?
Either way, he liked it.
"[y/n] [l/n], sir. It's a pleasure to meet you." You smiled at him, that glow from your eyes never fading.
"[y/n] [l/n]," he repeated, allowing the syllables to roll down his tongue like something falling down the stairs, bouncing. "A pretty name, for a pretty girl." He chuckled cooly as he pulled his hand away.
"I've never seen you before, Miss [y/n]. Are you new?" He inquired.
"Ah, I'm an intern. I just- uh, got posted here recently." You smiled. "I'm a fashion design major."
He couldn't help but be a bit disappointed by that. You were a fashion design major, which meant that you and him would probably not see each other often unless he kept paying visits to the fashion department.
"Wonderful. It's nice to see such wonderful young minds in my company." The older man said as he adjusted the cuffs of his suit with a relaxed grin. "I just know you'll do great in this company."
That blush on your cheeks after he complimented you drove him crazy.
That was how your first meeting concluded.
✧ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ✧
You were so intriguing that Adrian just couldn't keep his mind off you. The moment he returned to his office, he called up his secretary and immediately requested for your file.
When he got it, he couldn't help but obsess over it. Your portfolio was so perfect. From all your university extracurriculars to all your little quirks that the intreviewers had noted down, they were all there for him to overanalyse and understand. Your designs, he had to say, surpassed his grandmother's when she first started out the business.
His fingers traced past all the small details of the sketches of the dresses and suits you made and he wondered what you would look like as a model. Sure, you were the artist, but what if you were a muse?
He couldn't help but imagine you draped in fabrics, nothing else underneath.
He shook his head out of it.
Where was all this coming from? He was a gentleman, his grandmother had taught him to be one.
Brushing those thoughts aside, he went back to admiring your work with a smile.
Indeed, you were an asset he couldn't lose.
✧ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ✧
Afterwards, he invested a lot of time into you. He would always drop by to the studio to talk to the head fashion designers then he would come find you, especially during your break where no one else would see you.
He disliked seeing you with others, terrified that someone else might steal his skilled intern away. No, he couldn't let any business rivals take you away from him.
Or at least, that was his justification.
Adrian would always watch you sketch your dresses behind you till you noticed and promptly let out a yelp. He enjoyed that fear in your eyes but what he enjoyed even more was the constant ambition sparkling in your pupils.
Right, you were his intern and his future designer. It was normal for him to be so invested in your growth.
After all, he was a gentleman. His grandmother had emphasised him to be in all his teachings, so this wasn't wrong. He wasn't preying on the cute intern because he wanted her. No, no, he was being a good boss by observing your actions and your growth.
Another defense as to why he began to nick your drawing pens away.
He would always replace them by gifting you more expensive pen though, a gift for you "allowing" him to have a close-up of the materials you use.
Plus, his future designer deserved the best.
You were his, after all.
Tumblr media
"You lost another pen? No worries, I can gift you this one. Hm? Don't worry about it. Think of this as... an investment on your career."

What about Grandma then? In recent days, that Barbour issue has been discussed in several corners of this fandon, as you said. Well, the day before yesterday Garance was posting stories showing off his Barbour coats...Obviously those two also follow the topics discussed on Tumblr. 🤷‍♀️
Dear Garance Anon,
You will have to forgive me for the very, very late answer. I wanted to give it my full, undivided attention, because I believe we never spoke seriously about Mrs. Mariline Fiori, aka Garance Doré.
The short answer to your comment is 'oh, but we know they do, as we know they are not the only ones'. Unlike S&C, though, the McGrandmas might see us as a free, useful toolbox of sorts, where readily available ideas congregate. Remember they have deliberately calibrated their public couple personas on exactly what SC are unable and/or unwilling to give/show this fandom. To some extent, it works and, as any good Frenchwoman, Garance understood she was savvy to play the atout charme joker card. Which is exactly what she does - also, being French, she knows exactly what type of European public is instantly attracted to the Barbour reference: a public whose wallets she needs.
But as I just said, your post made me think about Mrs. Doré. Who is she, really? So, sorry, Anon, if I use you as a springboard for my musings.
She was, as I said, born Mariline Fiori, on May 1st (same day as JAMMF, LOL) 1977, in Ajaccio, Corsica's main town and birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Not a Corsican, though (same as Napoleon, LOL): Italian father, French/Algerian mom. People who left Algeria when it became independent, after the Evian Peace Accords, and whom the metropolitan French still call, to these day, 'pieds-noirs' (literally and quite derogatorily, 'black feet'). Her family's social status is, however, a bit unclear, as Mrs. Fiori successively played with her personal story in interviews, in what the French also sarcastically call 'des petits arrangements avec la vérité'/ a bit of tinkering with the truth.
In this 2019 interview to Elle UK, for example, her parents are described as owning a restaurant in Corsica (https://www.elle.com/uk/life-and-culture/a29758314/garance-dore-original-influencer/):
Tumblr media
But in another 2013 interview to The Talks, her mother was a shrink (https://the-talks.com/interview/garance-dore/):
Tumblr media
Also, for the sake of clarity:
Tumblr media
Oh, well: different country, different crowd/market, different agenda and perhaps older and wiser when talking to Elle UK, you would think?
Not necessarily and still a divisive figure for the international press/blogosphere. People did not appreciate her frequent flying and luxury travels during COVID, for example, along with her 'white, bourgeois woman entitlement'. Both in New Zealand...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Source: https://www.ensemblemagazine.co.nz/articles/garance-dore-new-zealand - I think you should read the entire article, as it is absolutely enlightening, also something I wouldn't go polemic about, you make up your own mind, really).
...and in France, where they apparently are not very fond of her 'cult of personality' approach to social media, to say the least:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Source: https://www.madmoizelle.com/a-t-on-vraiment-besoin-de-preter-attention-aux-conseils-antivax-des-influenceuses-1145916 Non Francophones could use Google Translate, but considerably lose in doing so the ferocity of the writing - but then, again, the French press is particularly sarcastic & ferocious, when set against someone or something. I love them to bits.)
The translation is clear, and I deliberately did not insist on the political stance of the article, whose title gives a straightforward idea: 'Do we really have to pay attention to the influencers' antivax advice?':
'This influencer cannot singlehandedly convert a part of her fans to antivaxing, via Instagram, but this comforts those who already thought so and keeps them even more hooked. This is because Instagram is a social media whose model heavily relies on shared affinities, meaning that it congregates likeminded people and creates bubble phenomena, of which GD is a good example.
GD, who built an empire around her handle which she turned into a brand and transformed her own lifestyle into her best product might very well turn her cult of personality into an economic model. Many celebrities already do so and are perfectly entitled to. But in her case, we are not talking about sending a birthday personalized cameo, we are talking about dispensing health advice during a pandemic.'
Truly, Ha-wa-wee 2.0 sounds like kindergarten compared to the above and never made it so far and wide in the international press. But hey, don't we know, double standard is the law of this land.
But to cut the story short, because it's 5 AM in here and we'd be talking about Mrs. McGrandma until tomorrow evening, do we really imagine someone so well versed in the ways and means of social media not following Tumblr?
Yeah, thought so, too.

No Copyright Law
The Real Reason for Germany's Industrial Expansion?
Did Germany experience rapid industrial expansion in the 19th century due to an absence of copyright law? A German historian argues that the massive proliferation of books, and thus knowledge, laid the foundation for the country's industrial might.
Von Frank Thadeusz

Dieser Beitrag stammt aus dem SPIEGEL-Archiv. Warum ist das wichtig?
The entire country seemed to be obsessed with reading. The sudden passion for books struck even booksellers as strange and in 1836 led literary critic Wolfgang Menzel to declare Germans "a people of poets and thinkers."
"That famous phrase is completely misconstrued," declares economic historian Eckhard Höffner, 44. "It refers not to literary greats such as Goethe and Schiller," he explains, "but to the fact that an incomparable mass of reading material was being produced in Germany."
Höffner has researched that early heyday of printed material in Germany and reached a surprising conclusion -- unlike neighboring England and France, Germany experienced an unparalleled explosion of knowledge in the 19th century.
German authors during this period wrote ceaselessly. Around 14,000 new publications appeared in a single year in 1843. Measured against population numbers at the time, this reaches nearly today's level. And although novels were published as well, the majority of the works were academic papers.
The situation in England was very different. "For the period of the Enlightenment and bourgeois emancipation, we see deplorable progress in Great Britain," Höffner states.
Equally Developed Industrial Nation
Indeed, only 1,000 new works appeared annually in England at that time -- 10 times fewer than in Germany -- and this was not without consequences. Höffner believes it was the chronically weak book market that caused England, the colonial power, to fritter away its head start within the span of a century, while the underdeveloped agrarian state of Germany caught up rapidly, becoming an equally developed industrial nation by 1900.
Even more startling is the factor Höffner believes caused this development -- in his view, it was none other than copyright law, which was established early in Great Britain, in 1710, that crippled the world of knowledge in the United Kingdom.
Germany, on the other hand, didn't bother with the concept of copyright for a long time. Prussia, then by far Germany's biggest state, introduced a copyright law in 1837, but Germany's continued division into small states meant that it was hardly possible to enforce the law throughout the empire.
Höffner's diligent research is the first academic work to examine the effects of the copyright over a comparatively long period of time and based on a direct comparison between two countries, and his findings have caused a stir among academics. Until now, copyright was seen as a great achievement and a guarantee for a flourishing book market. Authors are only motivated to write, runs the conventional belief, if they know their rights will be protected.
Yet a historical comparison, at least, reaches a different conclusion. Publishers in England exploited their monopoly shamelessly. New discoveries were generally published in limited editions of at most 750 copies and sold at a price that often exceeded the weekly salary of an educated worker.
London's most prominent publishers made very good money with this system, some driving around the city in gilt carriages. Their customers were the wealthy and the nobility, and their books regarded as pure luxury goods. In the few libraries that did exist, the valuable volumes were chained to the shelves to protect them from potential thieves.
In Germany during the same period, publishers had plagiarizers -- who could reprint each new publication and sell it cheaply without fear of punishment -- breathing down their necks. Successful publishers were the ones who took a sophisticated approach in reaction to these copycats and devised a form of publication still common today, issuing fancy editions for their wealthy customers and low-priced paperbacks for the masses.
A Multitude of Treatises
This created a book market very different from the one found in England. Bestsellers and academic works were introduced to the German public in large numbers and at extremely low prices. "So many thousands of people in the most hidden corners of Germany, who could not have thought of buying books due to the expensive prices, have put together, little by little, a small library of reprints," the historian Heinrich Bensen wrote enthusiastically at the time.
The prospect of a wide readership motivated scientists in particular to publish the results of their research. In Höffner's analysis, "a completely new form of imparting knowledge established itself."
Essentially the only method for disseminating new knowledge that people of that period had known was verbal instruction from a master or scholar at a university. Now, suddenly, a multitude of high-level treatises circulated throughout the country.
The "Literature Newspaper" reported in 1826 that "the majority of works concern natural objects of all types and especially the practical application of nature studies in medicine, industry, agriculture, etc." Scholars in Germany churned out tracts and handbooks on topics such as chemistry, mechanics, engineering, optics and the production of steel.
In England during the same period, an elite circle indulged in a classical educational canon centered more on literature, philosophy, theology, languages and historiography. Practical instruction manuals of the type being mass-produced in Germany, on topics from constructing dikes to planting grain, were for the most part lacking in England. "In Great Britain, people were dependent on the medieval method of hearsay for the dissemination of this useful, modern knowledge," Höffner explains.
The German proliferation of knowledge created a curious situation that hardly anyone is likely to have noticed at the time. Sigismund Hermbstädt, for example, a chemistry and pharmacy professor in Berlin, who has long since disappeared into the oblivion of history, earned more royalties for his "Principles of Leather Tanning" published in 1806 than British author Mary Shelley did for her horror novel "Frankenstein," which is still famous today.
'Lively Scholarly Discourse'
The trade in technical literature was so strong that publishers constantly worried about having a large enough supply, and this situation gave even the less talented scientific authors a good bargaining position in relation to publishers. Many professors supplemented their salaries with substantial additional income from the publication of handbooks and informational brochures.
Höffner explains that this "lively scholarly discourse" laid the basis for the Gründerzeit, or foundation period, the term used to describe the rapid industrial expansion in Germany in the late 19th century. The period produced later industrial magnates such as Alfred Krupp and Werner von Siemens.
The market for scientific literature didn't collapse even as copyright law gradually became established in Germany in the 1840s. German publishers did, however, react to the new situation in a restrictive way reminiscent of their British colleagues, cranking up prices and doing away with the low-price market.
Authors, now guaranteed the rights to their own works, were often annoyed by this development. Heinrich Heine, for example, wrote to his publisher Julius Campe on October 24, 1854, in a rather acerbic mood: "Due to the tremendously high prices you have established, I will hardly see a second edition of the book anytime soon. But you must set lower prices, dear Campe, for otherwise I really don't see why I was so lenient with my material interests."

Whether you’re planning to explore the romantic streets of Paris, wander through the ancient ruins of Rome, or hike the rugged Scottish Highlands, there’s something for everyone on this continent. However, to make the most of your European adventure, planning is key. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to master European travel, from budgeting and transportation to must-visit destinations and cultural tips.
1. Choosing Your European Destinations
Europe is vast, with over 40 countries to explore, each offering a unique experience. Depending on the length of your trip and your interests, you may want to focus on specific regions or cities.
Popular Regions to Consider:
Western Europe: France, Germany, Spain, the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Southern Europe: Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Croatia.
Eastern Europe: Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, and Romania.
Northern Europe: Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), and Finland.
Central Europe: Austria, Switzerland, and Slovakia.
Key Considerations for Choosing Destinations:
Your Interests: Do you love art, architecture, history, nature, or food? Different cities and regions specialize in different experiences. Paris is perfect for art lovers, while history buffs may prefer Athens or Rome.
Budget: Northern and Western Europe tend to be more expensive, while Eastern and Southern Europe can offer more budget-friendly options.
Travel Seasons: Consider the time of year. Summer is popular but crowded, while winter can offer cheaper rates and a more authentic local experience (though weather may be an issue in some regions).
2. Setting a Travel Budget
Travel in Europe can range from affordable to luxurious depending on your choices for accommodation, dining, and activities. Here’s a breakdown of what you should consider while budgeting:
Accommodation
Hostels: Ideal for solo travelers or those on a budget. Many hostels in Europe are clean, safe, and offer private rooms as well.
Airbnb & Vacation Rentals: A great option for couples or families wanting more space and kitchen facilities.
Hotels: Mid-range hotels offer comfort without breaking the bank, while luxury travelers can indulge in Europe’s many five-star hotels.
Budget Tip: Look into staying in less-touristy areas or smaller towns outside major cities, where accommodation tends to be cheaper.
Transportation
Flights: Europe is connected by an extensive network of budget airlines (like Ryanair, EasyJet), but be mindful of extra baggage fees and airport locations, which can be far from city centers.
Trains: The European rail system is world-class, especially for intercity and regional travel. Consider a Eurail pass if you plan to visit multiple countries by train.
Buses: Companies like FlixBus offer affordable and extensive bus routes throughout Europe, a great option for budget travelers.
Car Rentals: If you plan to explore rural areas or smaller towns, renting a car might be the best option. However, parking in cities can be expensive and difficult.
Dining & Food
Street Food & Markets: Many European cities have excellent street food and local markets where you can sample delicious, authentic dishes at a fraction of the cost of dining in restaurants.
Cafés & Casual Dining: Lunch specials or “prix fixe” menus often provide good value for money.
Fine Dining: If you’re a foodie, Europe boasts some of the world’s best Michelin-star restaurants, but these will increase your food budget.
Activities & Sightseeing
Free Attractions: Many European cities have free attractions, such as parks, historical landmarks, and even museums on certain days of the week.
City Passes: Consider purchasing city passes (e.g., Paris Pass, Rome Card) that provide free or discounted entry to top attractions, as well as free public transportation.
Tours: Guided tours can be a great way to learn about a destination, but opt for group tours if you’re looking to save money.
3. Planning Your Transportation Around Europe
Getting around Europe is relatively easy thanks to its well-developed infrastructure. Here’s a breakdown of the main options:
Flights
Budget Airlines: Low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, Wizz Air, and EasyJet make it easy to hop between major European cities. Keep an eye out for flash sales and be mindful of hidden fees, such as those for checked luggage.
Major Airlines: For longer flights or transatlantic travel, consider full-service airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, or Air France, which often offer more comfortable experiences.
Trains
Europe’s train system is one of the best in the world, making it easy to travel between countries and cities. Countries like Switzerland, France, and Germany have high-speed trains, while others, like Italy and Spain, also offer scenic routes.
Eurail Pass: If you’re planning to visit multiple countries, consider purchasing a Eurail pass, which offers unlimited train travel within a set period (e.g., 7 days, 1 month). This can be a cost-effective way to explore Europe, especially if you're covering long distances.
Buses
FlixBus & Eurolines: For budget travelers, buses are an affordable way to get around. They’re slower than trains but can be a great option for night travel, saving you both time and the cost of accommodation for a night.
Car Rentals
If you plan to explore remote or rural areas, renting a car can offer flexibility. However, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and road signs in each country, as they can vary significantly.
Public Transportation
Most European cities have excellent public transport systems, including buses, trams, and metros. You can buy day passes or city cards that offer unlimited travel for a set period. In cities like Paris, London, and Berlin, public transport is often faster and more convenient than driving.
4. Travel Tips for a Smooth European Experience
Understanding Schengen Zone Rules
Most of Europe is part of the Schengen Zone, which allows for visa-free travel between member countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If you're visiting non-Schengen countries (e.g., the UK, Ireland, Romania), you'll need to check specific entry requirements. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your return date.
Learning Basic Phrases
While English is widely spoken in many European countries, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic phrases in the local language (hello, please, thank you) can go a long way in enhancing your experience and showing respect for the local culture.
Currency & Payments
Currency: The Euro is used by 19 of the 27 EU member countries, while others like the UK, Switzerland, and Scandinavian countries have their own currencies.
ATMs & Cards: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it’s always a good idea to carry some cash, especially in smaller towns or rural areas where card payments may not be accepted.
Packing Tips
Pack Light: Europe’s cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways, and public transport systems can make it difficult to manage heavy luggage. Stick to a carry-on if possible.
Adapters: Europe uses different electrical outlets than the US or UK, so make sure to pack a universal adapter.
Safety & Travel Insurance
Europe is generally a very safe destination for travelers. However, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas where pickpocketing can be common.
Travel Insurance: Make sure to get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.
5. Must-See European Cities and Experiences
While every traveler’s preferences will differ, here are some can’t-miss cities and experiences:
Paris, France
Highlights: The Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and charming neighborhoods like Montmartre.
Tip: Visit in the early morning or late evening to avoid crowds at popular sites like the Eiffel Tower.
Rome, Italy
Highlights: The Colosseum, Vatican City, Roman Forum, and the delicious Italian cuisine.
Tip: Book your Vatican tickets in advance to skip the long lines.
Prague, Czech Republic
Highlights: The Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Old Town Square, and the famous Astronomical Clock.
Tip: Visit during the shoulder season (spring or fall) to enjoy fewer crowds and milder weather.
Barcelona, Spain
Highlights: The architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell, and the lively Las Ramblas.
Tip: Try to catch a local flamenco performance for a taste of Spanish culture.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Highlights: The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and a boat ride through the iconic canals.
Tip: Rent a bike to explore the city like a local.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Highlights: Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, and the historic Royal Mile.
Tip: Visit during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August for a world-class arts festival.
Conclusion
Mastering European travel requires a mix of careful planning and the willingness to embrace spontaneous adventures. By setting a clear budget, choosing the right transportation, and familiarizing yourself with the regions and cultures of Europe, you’ll be well on your way to a memorable and stress-free journey. Europe’s rich history, vibrant cities, and breathtaking landscapes offer endless opportunities for exploration.

5 Years Later
M A R I
The life of an American seemed a lot more luxurious than the one I thought I would live. People here weren't as happy and outgoing as I was used to back home in Europe. But I would deal with it if it meant not going back home until Christmas came. Even then I tried to always get away with it year in and out.
Chole was a good company to have by my side, we have made a lot of progress regarding the Miraculous Chain of Heroes. Two years after the fall of Pairs' greatest villain and a lot more free time on our hands than we were used to, Chole had the greatest idea ever. The creation of the Miraculous Chain of Heroes or MCH. A chain of miraculous heroes that we could trust that would bring good to the world not just Paris. That way we could help a lot more than ever before.
We spent months in and out scavenging desired people capable of this role. Using and mastering the reading of our senses, a power true miraculous holders were able to have. The fates of magic guided us in decisions in order to make a difference, therefore, choosing who was a perfect fit of a miraculous and who was not, as well as what miraculous. It was a tricky thing to master and only a few were able to obtain parts of that power sense.
We have been able to collect a few promising holders throughout the years, making great progress in helping crime rates be lowered. As of yet none of the newer members are able to keep their miraculous through the night yet. Chole and I decided that they would hand their miraculous over as soon as they were done using it. We agree that we didn't want another Felix chaos to repeat. Therefore any new members had to go through a multitude of things to prove capable of keeping their miraculous safe and not having any ill intentions. Such as training in the temple and stepping up when they were needed.
Only the original miraculous holders are able to keep theirs like Chole, Sabrina, Luka, Nino, Alya, and so on. A lot of them withdrew their miraculous after the defeat of Hawk Moth but some of them also contained. Kagami, Rose, and Luka are only partly in it and the only ones returning their miraculous from the group. They still want to help when they are needed but don't want to keep it to just doing that.
Alya and Nino handled most of the France and European area at the moment. They didn't want to move across the country with Chole and me. They ended up just leading the charge on the MCH there. We handled the American side and Sabrina handled a few other further away parts of the world with Max and some others. Everyone was in charge of their reign and team, making the process a lot more smoothly than Chole and I thought. No complaints on our part.
"hhehhe...ooooh he's hot," Chole said as we sat sprawled across our over-the-top penthouse apartment living room that Chole's dad had insisted on buying us in new york city. It was technically a miraculous living space.
Throughout the years her dad and a few other people have invested greatly into the MCH. Her dad is one of the top, providing most of the living spaces throughout the world for the teams who got paid too little in their real life to afford to switch places every so often and go to hotel rooms most nights. Chole and I provide the rest with my fashion company.
She decided to take business in college instead and helped me create a my fashion company. I handle the making and designs and she handles the advertisement and everything else. Right now we are sitting on one of the top fashion companies in the world with over half the world paying no less than 1,000 thousand for my designs. The MDC brand is one of the biggest investments in MCH.
Right now Chole and I were by ourselves in new york city again. We had just moved back after staying in California for over five months investigating some suspension black market activities. The order thinks an old and powerful miraculous has been activated recently, which has been lost and hidden away far longer than they have been alive.
They at first thought it was nothing but after I felt it through the connection of the miraculous as a holder and guardian they were sure of it. They said this certain miraculous was already powerful in itself but since it hasn't had the protection and safety of its box or used it could have become really unstable. Meaning if someone used it, they could be consumed by the power and distribution and chaos could come.
We got a lead in California, that it was spotted being sold in the black market. We tried to get it back or find anything of it. But after five, almost six months nothing happened and the lead completely disappeared. We thought we would take a break and head back home to new york for a while before picking up more about or any missions for that matter. Searching for a lost Miraclous was a lot of work, our brain power was almost entirely used up by it.
That's why we decide to spend it binch watching Marvel movies. Ironic right? We had just started watching Captain American and the Winter Soldier and Chole and I couldn't stop fangirling over Bucky and how hot he is.
"I'm usually into blonds but burettes aren't a bad idea, he does look insanely good," I said through a mouthful of popcorn. We were laying around with a mess of blankets and a much of takeout food, snacks, and drinks. We had almost completely drunk all of the expired red wine that was left from the last time we brought for a girl's night with all the other girls. Now with only us and the most intemperateness when it comes to alcohol,  it was bound to end up with 5 empty bottles.
"No wonder he had all the girls all over him in the 80s. That over guy has nothing on him" Chole said from her positing laying down with her head on my stomach and her legs and body curled up beside me.
I was in a sitting position with my back against the couch and a pillow in the middle. Didn't want to end up with back pain after this. Chole had the majority of the blanket but made sure to cover at least half of my lower body along with hers.
"You mean Captain American? he seems nice"
"Nice and boring, you mean. dark haired guys are always so much more fun to be around, dangerous and mysterious but fun"
"Oh, and you would know because you dated a certain dark-haired guy right? Who dyed his hair on a dare in collège et lycèe" I said in a teasing tone knowing how she got when I mentioned her one and true love, Luka Couffaine. She and Luka had a thing for a while in high school and a bit in college as well but then separated when they got too busy. Now they are just plain awkward since they also didn't really end things on a good note.
When Chole gets upset about something she cares about a lot, she gets passionate. Her passion means anger and hatred sometimes. She explodes and there is no stopping her from saying anything and everything that first comes into her mind. She cared for Luka a lot and didn't want to break up, ever. I could go as far as to say she loved him but she would kill me for that.
During their last year and two in college, things weren't going too well for them. Luka changed, he still was the nice and sincere guy I meet in middle school and sort of liked but he changed. He started his own band and created a name for himself and his music. Outside the band, he was already a part of since middle school. After that, he started hanging out with some bad people and was influenced and when he moved to LA she was heartbroken.
They had fought before but never like that night. He was drunk, on the verge of passing out even. He was mad that she didn't want him to leave but she wasn't mad about that. She was mad he was doing it for the wrong reasons and wasn't even finishing his decree in teaching that he has always wanted to do as well. Not only that but letting himself go just to be liked by a much of guys who were building up hope in him. They were not good people and although they were helping him, it wasn't the type of promotion or advertisement he needed for himself or music.
They fought for a couple of hours, both saying things they didn't want to say. Chole saying some colorful things because he was making her mad to the point that she would have knocked him out herself if Alya and I weren't there to stop her. She can get really violent when she cared about someone. And she cared for him and she was trying to help him, making him understand he was making a horrible decision and he would regret it.
All of us tried really but no one was as passionate to make him retreat his answer then she was. She tried until the very last minute to make him change his mind on moving with a group of asswhole guys he hasn't even known for more than two months. Nino Max ended up having to drag him to his room since he was basically saying more than he could talk, saying nonsense. Before he left Chole smacked him in his head as hard as she could when he left for the airport the next morning, with the hangover he had that sure did not help.
"Oh my god don't remind me. My blood still boils every time I see that guy. Can't even believe he let them bleach all of his hair just because it would bring more attention to his music. He has always loved his dark blue hair"
"Such a shame too, I always loved his hair in high school. Thought it was so cool that someone's hair was like that"
"Yea I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for his hair, I wouldn't even have agreed on that stupid date he asked me on after your birthday"
"oh please, you would have melted either way. when he wrote that song about the blond ice queen I knew he was talking about you, even before he confessed to writing it about you"
"What no way"
"He was always looking at you in the halls and in class. I had to tutor him because he kept staring at you all throughout the class. He was so excited when I told him I would introduce you to him" I said in a smug teasing look towards her.
"Okay, shut up and let me watch hot winter soldier Bucky" She rolled her eyes.
Buzz...Buzz
I looked towards my phone and saw the alert on my phone. Max installed a miraculous alert app for everyone. So we could communicate and pass on important messages instead. It was also connected to the mainframe which was in the temple. Everything in there has been insanely upgraded with tech and everything. Usually, Max would stay there to teach most of the week to the order and other members the way of the modern world, including how to send messages and alert through the main computer to us.
We got alerts instantly when someone happens. Depending on how dangerous and serious it was a different color would appear on our screens. Then if it was just a message that anyone was needed at the temple or somewhere like backup it flashed a red. which was what it flashed as soon as the two-second Buzz of a message from the temple cleared. That would have to wait.
"Pollen"
"Tikki"
One look at each other and we both called out to our Kwami. They were probably somewhere napping after the buffet they had of our takeout over four hours ago. We started our bench watching at 12 this morning and now it was two in the morning.
"Guess well having to finish watching his hunkiness when we come back from whatever Sabrina and Max need" I giggled as she scrunched her eyes and gave me a pout of dislike.
"Can't they just call someone else on call? We're basically drunken idiots right now and I can't feel my legs from all the hours we have been sitting down watching movies. Call on Alya and Nino or something" she begged.
"We are on call. Alya and Nino have a date night today and everyone else can't make it."
"Call on the stupid decisions then, he barely helps out anymore."
"Although I would love to do that, he's way too far from Sabrina's location and I'm the only one that has the horse Miraculous. Now stop whining you can finish it when we get back. "
She didn't stop pouting but got up nonetheless. By then all of the miraculous in my position and Pollen came into the living room. Millions of tiny creatures were staring at us, wondering what was going on.
"Pollen, Kaalki, plag. Let's go they need us" forgot to mention another thing. Tikki and have retired, at least for now. With a new change, I thought I need to change in miraculous and since I am apparently a fluid soul I can handle any miraculous since any goes in sync with my soul. Adrien used to have Plagg and he seemed depressed without a holder we already work great together so I thought I would choose him for a while. Tikki was fine stepping back for a while and sharing her holder, she knew I still loved her. Nonetheless, she also knew it was helping me heal a bit being with Plag and him as well.
"So do we transform right now or...." I gave her a roll of my eyes. She knew what my answer was.
"Just checking."
"Pollen, Buzz out!"
"Plag, Claws out!"
After that, I grabbed the horse miraculously and transfused the two before opening a portal to Sabrina and preparing for anything they would need of help at the moment right now.
Before I left I check glanced at the message from the temple I got sent before. It was completely capitalized letters which made me figure out it wasn't a computer system automated message but from someone from the temple. The words that read were what made my heart partly race.
LEAGUE OF SHADOWS AT TEMPLE< STARTING ATTACK SOON

Will be having an updating schedule of two times per week. Tuesdays and Thursdays. I might also update over the weekend on Saturday if I don't have too much to do and have time to write, but for now, it will mostly just be Thursdays and Tuesdays that I publish this story.
Also if you want to check out my Wattpad, I publish my stories there before here. I don't have too many books published on there yet but I'm planning on writing more and updating more of my other books as well when I can and have the inspiration to do so, in case anyone wants to check them out as well.
Hope you all enjoyed this chapter.

Lessons learned while on this canal joy ride (in no particular order)
Never go for the cheapest boat option - you will always come across someone whose boat is designed without internal steps, with a bigger bed, a separate toilet and a conventional shower that you can stand under - and then you will wish that you had paid through the nose for it.
There are significant advantages to living in such a small space. The rose` in the fridge is always within arms reach of the kitchen table as is the quiche in the oven. Our apartment at home seems altogether too big now.
Don’t skimp on insurance, especially if you are renting a boat with no forward thrusters - which sounds personal but refers to the boat’s ability to manoeuvre sideways at a moment’s notice. We think we took our own advice but will know for sure when the boat company inspects the boat tomorrow.
Ignore at least half the instructions about what to bring - especially the need for gloves and boat shoes. We used the gloves precisely twice to grip the ropes and then trusted to our innate abilities to hang on for grim death - and we saw not a single drop of moisture on the deck that would cause us to slip over on our high heels.
Ignore the people who say that you need to be able to speak French - it is true that compared to other parts of France that we know there is less English spoken, however people are extremely helpful and eager to understand. Actually David and I part company on this one a bit because as the person least able to speak French on this boat it would have been nice to be able to chat to the lock keepers once in a while and understand the directions they were giving me before I saw panic in their eyes.
One never looks forward to a night in a hotel more than when one has been attempting to sleep and bathe in a little Penichette for 7 nights.
French markets are the best! We bought a huge container of Paella at the Malestoit market this morning because we knew we would be some way from a village when hunger struck. We timed our stop so that David could join his online poetry group, a happy memory in itself. Were it not for that Paella, we would not have known where our next meal was coming from and that is a dangerous situation in a Penichette. I also bought a brightly patterned cotton scarf from the market to go with my chunky blue jumper from Trieste. It was a very chilly morning so I slung it around my neck in my usual devil may care fashion. The stall holder, a man in his 50s, was appalled and hastily retied it for me in such a way that it wouldn’t come adrift. It was good to see at this market the same old underwear stalls for women of a certain age that we have always seen, though at what age I wonder would one finally succumb to their daggy charms.
Driving a barge along a canal is a perfect way to experience the country you are in. You have a destination to reach and you arrange your days around it. You have the luxury of time because these boats are not built for speed and the lock keepers aren't meant to rush around filling and then emptying their locks so that you can go hurtling along at breakneck speed along their canals. If another boat beats you into a lock or comes into the lock behind you (as we experienced for the first time today) everything takes twice as long. You are forced to sit and watch the world by go and reflect on whether the Cormorant you see swimming around with only the very top of its slim neck visible above the water is the same one you saw a kilometre back, and how distant that faraway cuckoo bird call might be. And you can bide your time in the back room of a little cafe, drinking cafe au lait with the locals while you wait for the locks to open at 9am, before which nothing happens on a canal.
It has been a wonderful trip and we are so glad to have experienced it. I will start posting again when we are in Greece.

Are any designers worth investing? Like Hermes or maybe looking into vintage items from Chanel or Louis Vuitton? I I’m not looking into designer fashion because I’m not skinny lol and I don’t think I’ll fit into the clothes, but for accessories like purses, wallets, and scarves and shoes
You'll can find a good summary of my fashion guide tips here (last paragraph)
Of all the brands you mentioned, Hermès is less crappy. Hermès and Louis Vuitton are both historically luggage brands but I never heard anything good from LV maroquinerie, meanwhile Hermès one quality & savoir-faire seems to have remained fair. They are also made in France, and it shows. The port€feuille Soufflet is beautiful and so pur€
Tumblr media
Petite Maroquinerie (wallet, purse...) is definitely a great investment if you want quality item that aren't excessively expensive. I mean, Hermès is VERY expensive (I think the only brand with such a high price range for clothing is The Row) but you will definitely find high quality maroquinerie for smaller/indie brands. If its handmade and locally produced there's virtually nothing that makes them different from luxury/high end/famous brand. I already explained that those brands high price were to cover cost of the marketing/ads (those celebrities/models they paid for it), not bc of the intrinsic value of the products. Luxury bags have like a 3000% markup....
An etsy indie designer might delivery the same quality for 10 times cheaper (bc they wouldn't have need to cover their marketing investment). You might actually find excellent quality maroquinerie on esty so don't be blinded by brandnames and marketing 🤍
