(2/2) The frame is milled in maple. It’s design is a variant on our Salvator Rosa profile, with an "ogee," a term used to describe curving profiles in architecture and design. In most of Europe this profile is named for the Baroque painter Salvator Rosa, though in the U.K. it is named for Carlo Maratta. Both painters favored it. Usually it is highly decorated, though we use it unadorned. The frame is finished in a hand-applied custom paint casein. Our client was elated at the compelling result of her collaboration with us! #framedesign #womenartists #womenshistorymonth #womenartists #BarkFrameworks #womendesigners #painting #customframes #nycframers #framehistory #FramedbyBark #europeanframes #design #ogee #framedesign #esop https://www.instagram.com/p/CM5Obn2Fv36/?igshid=1114swm62e3dk

(1/2) When a long-time client recently dropped off an oil painting portrait of her daughter to have framed, our Art Preservation specialist (and painter) David Johnson was pleasantly surprised to recognize it as his own work, painted more than a decade previously! The work, titled "Family Portrait," is framed in a modification of our Cavetto profile designed by Amy Hinten. #FramedbyBark #BarkFrameworks #gildedframes #customframes #artists #familyportrait #Gold #goldleaf #whitegold #framehistory #coincidence #oilpainting #artpreservation #archivalframing #nycartists #madeinNYC #craftsmanship #esop (at Bark Frameworks) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLKn0t4lkUt/?igshid=cg6709re7hfr

(1/2) Founder's Fridays: In this new series, posted on occasional Fridays, we’ll talk to Bark Frameworks founder Jed Bark about memorable details of the company’s work, history, and physical space. Today: the panels of Bark. Anyone who has visited our LIC shop/showroom might have noticed these dramatic panels near the President’s office (east side of building). Explains Jed, “When I bought them, I was told that they were parts of scenery of a 19th century Italian opera production! They are laurel leaves, and that's one reason I bought them. Laurel leaf borders were used on French painting frames in the late 19th century. And we made one for a Pissarro painting for the Indianapolis Museum of Art. We made the frame according to instructions that he had given in a letter at the time.” #FoundersFridays #frames #BarkFrameworks #woodshop #FrameHistory #customframes #Pissarro #laurelleaves #framedesign #artmuseums #artgalleries #licbusiness #craftsmanship #esop #employeeowned (at Bark Frameworks) https://www.instagram.com/p/CI9MEh-ljbW/?igshid=q46iys2js0w1

We research frame history when creating new designs, and -- in documenting many of our corner samples -- we've created a robust catalogue perfect for the social distancing era. We have digital .pdf's of many of our designs, which can be e-mailed to clients both near and far! Here, our Pepin moulding, named after 18th century French framer Claude Pepin, from an original frame bearing his stamp. This sample is maple with a hand-applied paint casein finish. #BarkFrameworks #framedesign #woodworking #ClaudePepin #woodshop #customframes #nycframer #framehistory #framecatalogue #cornersamples #paintcasein #handfinished #craftsmanship #madeinNYC #smallbusiness #socialdistancing #museumframes #artcollectors #interiordesign #esop https://www.instagram.com/p/CFPpKm7Fmiv/?igshid=icaj3fie6rhj

(1/2) Our designs are sometimes inspired by artists’s own frames. Here, a work by John Marin, titled "Movement: Boats and Objects, Blue Gray Sea" (1947), displays the American artist’s affinity for extending his painting onto the outer edges of the frame. Marin's original 3 ½-inch wide design was created from pine moldings fastened with dowel rods, shown as dotted lines in the profile drawing. #FrameDesign #JohnMarin #artistsframes #americanart #Craftsmanship #painting #BarkFrameworks #woodwork #milling #FrameHistory #design #dowels #pine #boats https://www.instagram.com/p/CEAUk7wF__6/?igshid=bivxj6idcqvh

Did you know that Bark Frameworks turned 50 this year? Recently, company founder Jed Bark gave a talk to employee owners about the history of Bark Frameworks and the early days of the business. Here, some samples used during the talk: frame profiles made in the early 90s, when we started to explore designs from history. (2/2) Here, the watercolor on paper titled "Sea, Green and Brown, Maine, 1937" with its original frame, painted by John Marin. From the book “…here Marin began to paint the frames himself, using colors that echo the palette of the watercolor or oil. It is at this point he began to literally extend the activity of the paper or canvas onto the very edges of the frame.” #FrameHistory #FrameResearch #JohnMarin #BarkFrameworks #framedesign #watercolor #woodworking #handfinishing #paintedframe #americanart #artic #landscapes #fineartframing #customframersnyc https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxx3E8OlMRo/?igshid=tqhepvrox736

From our design archive: the Caillebotte profile, one of our designs that is so versatile and requested, we gave it a name. This profile can be designed and milled to almost any size and finish. A bit of history on the profile: We originally photographed and measured a Gustave Caillebotte frame when the artwork was on a museum loan in New York. This profile is an interesting example of the Impressionists’ affinity for simple fluted or reeded frames. The corner shown here is maple with custom casein finish. #Caillebotte #barkframeworks #framedesign #framehistory #artseducation #reededframes #flutedframes #Impressionism #modernframes #galleryframes #artistsframes #pictureframes #nycmuseums #technicaldrawing #customframer #framedbyBark https://www.instagram.com/p/CP9CsamlMtS/?utm_medium=tumblr
